To strengthen their unity further, members of the Sarutobi clan give them earrings that are presented to each generation when they swear their oath. They wear the earrings so that they never forget their oath, as it's there whispering in it into their ear. Children wear the earrings of their parents from the day they become a genin to when they attain the rank of chūnin, so that their parents' oath is burned into their memory.
