The Rasenshuriken was invented by Naruto Uzumaki shortly after he figured out the principles of the Wind Release: Rasengan. Like that technique, Naruto typically has the help of two shadow clones in the Rasenshuriken's formation: he provides the chakra, one clone helps keep the chakra contained, and the second clone adds his wind-nature. Unlike the Wind Release: Rasengan, additional shape transformation is applied to the Rasenshuriken, creating four large points around the central Rasengan-core, giving the appearance of a fūma shuriken. By the time of The Last: Naruto the Movie, Naruto is able to create Rasenshuriken without aid.
By manipulating the wind-natured chakra of the Wind Release: Rasengan, Naruto was able to create four large points, causing the Rasengan to take on the appearance of a giant fūma shuriken, with the Rasengan in the centre remaining a perfect sphere. The technique gives off a loud screech-like noise during and after its formation. In order to perform it, Naruto requires the aid of two shadow clones; he provides the chakra, one clone is responsible for the shape transformation, and the other provides the nature transformation.

After travelling a certain distance or colliding with a target that it can't slice through, the central sphere of the Rasenshuriken detonates, producing a vortex of wind in the immediate area. Naruto is able to overcome these flaws by learning senjutsu. By coating the Rasenshuriken in senjutsu-chakra, its shape is maintained after formation, meaning that he can use it as a projectile and, as a result, that he no longer needs to worry about damaging himself. When thrown, the Rasenshuriken travels very quickly, enough to cross the crater of Chibaku Tensei in under a second. Once thrown, Naruto can remotely expand the Rasenshuriken to either compensate for imprecise aim or to catch dodging targets, though its speed is great enough that this is rarely necessary. He enjoys similar benefits while using Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, where he can use his chakra arms to guide the Rasenshuriken to its target while he remains at a safe distance. Moreover, he can use these chakra arms in place of the usual shadow clones.
Naruto later improved the Rasenshuriken with Sage Mode. This allows him to throw it at his opponents, and removes the threat of damaging himself with the technique. Another improvement is that the shuriken now expands after it has been thrown, compensating for imprecise aim or fleeing opponents by widening the area of effect. However, he can throw the Rasenshuriken quickly enough that this is rarely necessary. When thrown, the Rasenshuriken becomes Naruto's quickest attack, able to cross an entire Chibaku Tensei crater — which was roughly the size of a small mountain range — in less than a single second. When it exploded, it took up a large part of that same area. Naruto can also use this through the Shadow Shuriken Technique.

Naruto eventually starts making the Rasenshuriken a template for other jutsu, just as he does with the regular Rasengan. Like the Rasengan, some of the simpler modifications he makes to the Rasenshuriken are by using multiple simultaneously or making them larger (or even smaller). In place of the Rasengan he uses for the centre of the Rasenshuriken, he can use Tailed Beast Balls or Truth-Seeking Balls that will create significantly larger explosions upon detonation. He can also apply other natures to the Rasenshuriken, as he does with the Super Tailed Beast Rasenshuriken.
Naruto can also create and throw this technique in the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. In this form, he can use the extra chakra arms in place of Shadow Clones to create the Rasenshuriken. Using his chakra arms, he can guide the Rasenshuriken towards the enemy, allowing him to redirect it back at them, should the initial attack fail. He can also form a miniature version of the Rasenshuriken with just his index finger and two small chakra arms. Naruto can also create a massive-sized Rasenshuriken of similar size to the Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan.

Naruto can also create and throw two Rasenshuriken with both of his hands in Tailed Beast Mode without the aid of his shadow clones, their cutting power increases tremendously to such an extent that one of them could even sever the Ten-Tails' extremely durable tails with relative ease.

In Sage Mode, he became skilled enough to create a larger Rasenshuriken that can grow to tremendous proportions, which is strong enough to completely immobilise Madara Uchiha long enough for Hashirama Senju to pin him down.

After befriending the tailed beasts and gaining their chakra, Naruto can add Son Gokū's lava-natured chakra to his Rasenshuriken and—with the addition of Sage Mode—can use it to perform his Sage Art: Lava Release Rasenshuriken technique. He can also infuse his wind nature chakra with a Tailed Beast Ball and Truth-Seeking Ball using chakra donated by Kurama, to create the Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken, a technique which was powerful enough to destroy multiple satellites created by Madara's Chibaku Tensei technique with ease. Naruto is also able to use each of the special abilities and chakra natures of the other specific tailed beasts.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto's skill with the Rasenshuriken had improved to the point where he could instantly form and throw it without Sage Mode, Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, or Six Paths Sage Mode, and even guide it into enemies.

Drawbacks
In the beginning, the Rasenshuriken required a great deal of chakra to perform, and after creating it three times, using his own chakra, left Naruto extremely fatigued. However, it requires a good deal more chakra to both create and then throw it, which, while in Sage Mode, can be used twice in addition to other Rasengan variants, with a known maximum of three times. This indicates that a thrown Rasenshuriken takes up approximately a third of his sage chakra. He must then re-enter Sage Mode before using the technique again.

In addition to having the Rasenshuriken damage his arm, Naruto had difficulty maintaining the Rasenshuriken's stability when he first used it. It was prone to dissipating before Naruto could reach his target, requiring that he use it as a melee weapon and force it into the opponent, just as he does with the usual Rasengan.

This article is about the ninjutsu. For the episode, see Wind Release: Rasenshuriken!.

The Wind Release: Rasenshuriken is a shuriken-shaped variant of the Wind Release: Rasengan.

Overview

Rasenshuriken require a great deal of chakra to perform: Naruto has been shown creating as many as three Rasenshuriken on his own before tiring out.[3] While in Sage Mode, he can create two Rasenshuriken per transformation; after the second, he must re-enter Sage Mode in order to be able create additional Rasenshuriken.[4] Once formed, the Rasenshuriken gives off a loud screeching noise. Its four points are very sharp, enough to cut through rock[5] and disintegrate most of Pain's Human Path.[6]

Blast

Rasenshuriken's wind vortex.

After travelling a certain distance or colliding with a target that it can't slice through, the central sphere of the Rasenshuriken detonates, producing a vortex of wind in the immediate area. Within this vortex are created countless microscopic wind-blades, so many that even the Sharingan can't count them all.[7] The wind blades damage anything within the vortex on a cellular level, attacking the chakra circulatory system to such a degree that no amount of medical ninjutsu can heal it. Tsunade likens the damage to poison, and warns that if the damage is great enough, those effected by it won't be able to use jutsu again.[8]

Development

Severing Chakra Cells2

The side effect from using the technique at close range.

When Naruto first starts using the Rasenshuriken there are two flaws in its usage: it is prone to sporadically dissipating after being formed. In order to keep it stable, Naruto must use it as a melee weapon, thrusting the Rasenshuriken into targets in the same way that he does the standard Rasengan.[9] This in turn causes the cellular damage his targets receive to also be inflicted on whichever arm Naruto holds the Rasenshuriken with, though his arm isn't damaged quite as extensively. Nevertheless, it poses enough of a risk to him that it is classified as kinjutsu.[8]

Rasen Expansion

Rasenshuriken's expansion.

Naruto is able to overcome these flaws by learning senjutsu. By coating the Rasenshuriken in senjutsu-chakra, its shape is maintained after formation, meaning that he can use it as a projectile and, as a result, that he no longer needs to worry about damaging himself. When thrown, the Rasenshuriken travels very quickly, enough to cross the crater of Chibaku Tensei in under a second.[10] Once thrown, Naruto can remotely expand the Rasenshuriken to either compensate for imprecise aim or to catch dodging targets,[6] though its speed is great enough that this is rarely necessary. He enjoys similar benefits while using Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, where he can use his chakra arms to guide the Rasenshuriken to its target while he remains at a safe distance.[11] Moreover, he can use these chakra arms in place of the usual shadow clones.[12]

Several Rasenshuriken influenced by Naruto's tailed beast chakra.

Trivia

 • Though the technique debuted in chapter 339, Naruto used it off-panel six chapters earlier.
 • Like the Rasengan, the Rasenshuriken's colour is depicted inconsistently in the series because Masashi Kishimoto has yet to decide upon a colour for the technique.[13] It is most often depicted as being a bluish-white, but different promotional and supplementary material have also shown it as red or orange with no obvious pattern.
 • In Naruto Shippūden the Movie: The Will of Fire, Hiruko tries to absorb this technique, but was unable to combine the peak-levels of shape and nature transformation, like Naruto did at first. The sphere begins forming in his hand, but it becomes unstable and disperses, backfiring on him.
 • When the senjutsu version of this technique is thrown in Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 and its sequels, the Rasenshuriken hits the target and carries them into the air before exploding. This version is referred to as the True Wind Release: Rasenshuriken (真風遁・螺旋手裏剣, Shin Fūton: Rasenshuriken).
