Re: Spider-Man Wiki Categories

There's not really a big secret to how categories work here, we just keep the categories themselves be very simple and broad in what they have. For example, Characters, Jutsu, Chapters, Episodes. Between those four categories, you'll probably find over 90% of our articles. We don't categories for example for "Konohagakure Shinobi", "Genin", "C-rank techniques" and more specific stuff like that. If people want those, we direct them to the semantic drill down, which acts like a filterable list. We use that for characters and jutsu articles. Want ANBU level shinobi from Kirigakure who use Water Release? Just filter them by those characteristics. Unfortunately, for a long while now, while data is counted, newer data isn't shown in the lists, and if the article is moved, the article shows up by the old name. Even if the redirect is deleted, redlink takes its place. That is due to the modifications Wikia makes to the SemanticMediaWiki extension we use for that. Wikia tweaks it so it doesn't add as much load on their servers. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 02:22, January 19, 2013 (UTC)

Coding stuff isn't my area of expertise. I only know that the extension used for that is "Semantic MediaWiki". The code gurus in this wiki are Simant and UltimateSupreme. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 19:23, January 20, 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Categories are generally included in the infoboxes themselves. So when a infobox is placed on a page, the category gets placed automatically. Thats how most other wikis do it as well.

You can do it simply by adding a
<includeonly>[[Category Name]]</includeonly>
to the infobox.

And the last thing is that you can easily remove any unwanted existing categories using a bot. But having many categories is not bad (but maybe having too many is?). You can use them with DynamicPageList and do many powerful things.~ UltimateSupreme 02:58, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
