From Narutopedia

The Template:Nihongo is a geographical feature in the Naruto anime and manga series. It has a typically dry and windy climate, and is covered in large deserts as a result. Sandstorms are a common occurrence.

The Land of Wind is home to Sunagakure. It had been relatively uninvolved with politics until recent times, and even had a peace treaty signed with the Land of Fire. The lord ruling it, however, has been systematically cutting down its military force and transferring missions he would normally address to his own country's hidden village to Konohagakure. It conspired with Otogakure to launch a surprise attack and hopefully destroy Konohagakure. The ninja of Sunagakure tend to use wind and sand-based jutsu, although some of its notable ninja are masters of puppet techniques.

[edit] Sunagakure

Template:Nihongo is one of the five great ninja villages, and as such has a Kage, known as the Kazekage, as its leader. The symbol on their headband is of an hourglass.

With its military forces being scaled down by the Land of Wind's feudal lord, the Fourth Kazekage realized that they had to increase the quality of each ninja to maintain a military force, Gaara being one of the results of that.

Sunagakure

As more time passed, the lord started commissioning Konoha with requests he should have made to Sunagakure. On top of that, he began cutting back on Sunagakure's budget. The Fourth Kazekage realized that if he didn't act quickly, Sunagakure would be in danger of disappearing, so he joined forces with Otogakure in an attempt to destroy Konoha and force the lord to re-establish Sunagakure's military force if he wished for his country to continue existing. With the failure of the attack and the death of the Fourth Kazekage caused by the betrayal of Otogakure, Sunagakure re-allied with Konoha, and Gaara, Temari and Kankuro assisted Konoha during the mission to retrieve Sasuke. Gaara eventually became the Fifth Kazekage.

[edit] Land of Wind's Daimyo

  • Age: 461

Template:Nihongo is the Daimyo (warlord) of the Land of Wind. He is responsible for the budget cuts to Sunagakure that eventually lead to the invasion of Konohagakure.

[edit] Kazekages

Sunagakure has had five Template:Nihongo since its foundation. A set of statue's in Sungakure's council room depicts four of the five Kazekages, the fifth having yet to be built.

[edit] Third Kazekage

  • Age: ? (deceased)

Template:Nihongo is considered to be the strongest Kazekage in the history of Sunagakure. He was kidnapped many years before the start of the series, though due to the breakout of war Sunagakure was forced to call off the search for him. Although the villagers never found the culprit or his body, they presumed he had been killed. Sasori turned out to be his killer, and had converted the Third's body into his strongest puppet, which he used against Chiyo and Sakura Haruno. The puppet was destroyed in the same battle.

The Third had a special genetic trait that allowed him to convert his chakra into magnetic forces. This ability, based on the jutsu used by the previous host of Shukaku, allowed him to control iron powder to create his Template:Nihongo. While it is unknown if this was a kekkei genkai, Sasori was able to retain the ability when converting the Third into a puppet and added poison to the Iron Sand to increase its lethality. Sasori was able to shoot the Iron sand like bullets as Template:Nihongo, as well as use Template:Nihongo to create an expanding sphere of spikes that engulfs the entire area it is used in.

[edit] Fourth Kazekage

Template:Nihongo was the previous leader of Sunagakure. He is the father of Gaara, Temari and Kankuro, and husband of Karura. By his order, the one-tailed Shukaku was sealed within Gaara so that he could become the village's ultimate weapon. However, as Gaara grew and his abilities began to manifest, the Fourth realized that this had been a poor choice and started to view Gaara as a failed experiment who was a threat to the inhabitants of Sunagakure. Beginning around the time Gaara turned six, the Fourth began issuing orders for Gaara's assassination, none of which were ever successful.

The Fourth was also the one to join with Orochimaru in his attack on Konoha, hoping to teach the daimyo a lesson and to re-establish Sunagakure's military force. Things, however, did not go as planned for him; just before the Chunin exam's third stage, where his attack was planned to take place, he was betrayed and assassinated by his ally, Orochimaru, who stole his identity to get close to the Hokage.

[edit] Chiyo

  • Age: ? (deceased)
  • Rank: N/A (retired)
  • Seiyu: Ikuko Tani

Template:Nihongo is Sunagakure's poison and puppet specialist. Chiyo is very knowledgeable when it comes to handling poisons and used her skills often during the Third Secret Ninja War, only to be countered numerous times by Tsunade's medical expertise. As a result, Chiyo holds a grudge against Tsunade, who she has come to refer to as Template:Nihongo. She holds a much worse grudge against Kakashi's father, Konoha's White Fang, for killing her son and daughter-in-law during that same war. Chiyo took care of her grandson, Sasori, during his childhood after the death of his parents. At some point, she taught Sasori how to use the Puppet Technique, and Sasori used his newfound knowledge to build puppets resembling his parents out of old malfunctioning puppets. Wanting Sasori to be able to feel love from his puppet parents, Chiyo developed a jutsu that would allow her to bring puppets to life at the cost of her own. Before she could use this ability for Sasori, however, he left the village, leaving Chiyo with the desire to see her grandson again.

In Sasori's absence, Chiyo installed a Template:Nihongo into her right arm, giving herself a defensive measure to use in desperate situations. Chiyo would go on to seal the One-Tailed Shukaku inside of Gaara under the orders of the Fourth Kazekage. After this event she removed herself from Sunagakure's affairs and maintained the notion that the village should not affiliate with other countries. Years later Sasori returns to Sunagakure and kidnaps Gaara. In the hopes of getting to see him, Chiyo joins the retrieval team from Konohagakure. Chiyo and Sakura Haruno are eventually forced into battle with Sasori, and she battles his puppet army with her own. As Sasori tries one last effort at defeating Chiyo, Chiyo stabs him through the heart with the puppets of his parents, allowing him to be close to them in death as he couldn't be in life. After reuniting with the rest of the retrieval team, Gaara is found dead. Because Gaara died as a result of the beast she sealed within him, Chiyo attempts to revive Gaara to apologize for what she had done. Although she is initially unable to due to being too weak, Naruto Uzumaki donates some of his chakra to help finish the process. With Gaara's revival, Chiyo offers her blessings to Naruto as the next Hokage, and dies peacefully with her view of the world changed in the end thanks to Naruto and Sakura.

[edit] Ebizo

Template:Nihongo is called Template:Nihongo by the Sand villagers. He and his older sister Chiyo are highly revered in Sunagakure and are known as the Template:Nihongo. He is Sasori's great-uncle. While saddened by his sister's death, as he had hoped it was another of her jokes, he couldn't help but smile on how peaceful she looked.

[edit] Jonin

[edit] Baki

Template:Nihongo is the sensei of Gaara, Kankuro, and Temari, and he oversaw the three's progress during the Chunin Exams. After he converses with Kabuto Yakushi about the planned invasion of Konoha, he offers to eliminate the eavesdropper of their conversation as a sign of trust. Although the eavesdropper, Hayate Gekko, is able to strike him, Baki's unavoidable Template:Nihongo kills him. Baki led the fight with the Sand and Sound shinobi in the Konoha stadium during the invasion and had an unfinished duel with Genma Shiranui.

In Part II, he seems to be serving on Sunagakure's advisory council, and has a more favorable view of Gaara than the other council members. When Kankuro was injured by Sasori, Baki seemed to be very concerned about Kankuro's condition.

[edit] Kankuro

File:Sand Siblings.png
Temari, Gaara, and Kankuro in Part II

Template:Nihongo is the second oldest child of the Fourth Kazekage, making him the older brother of Gaara and the younger brother of Temari. Kankuro's most notable personality trait is his apparent dislike for children, as seen when he is noticeably irritated while in the presence of someone younger than him. This is most evident when he is with Gaara, who Kankuro is forced to put up with due to the fear his younger brother imposes on him. Despite their apparent differences, Gaara and Kankuro become very close over the timeskip as Gaara begins to confide in Kankuro and shares his dreams of wanting to risk his life to protect Sunagakure. As such, Kankuro has become very protective of Gaara, willing to challenge anyone who puts Gaara down in his presence. When Gaara is captured by Akatsuki, Kankuro rushes to his brother's aid in an attempt to save him and even after being bedridden as a result he does not falter in his resolve to find Gaara.

Kankuro is a talented puppeteer, and with each of his appearances in the major arcs is seen with a new puppet in his arsenal. The three puppets that have been introduced were all originally created by Sasori, and came into Kankuro's possession some time after the former left Sunagakure. Template:Nihongo, the first of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, has been heavily modified by Kankuro. Because of this it has become highly offensive, having numerous concealed weapons and being able to detach any of its limbs for separate attacks. Template:Nihongo, the second of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, is used to capture opponents for assassination purposes. Once an opponent is captured within it each of Kuroari's arms convert to saw-blades and slice through the confined opponent. Template:Nihongo, the third of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, is not seen in action in the manga. In the anime, Sanshouo is shown to have a hollow body that Kankuro and up to two other people can take cover in to defend against attacks. These puppets seem to be designed to work together to some degree, as Kankuro frequently uses them in tandem to increase their effectiveness. Karasu, for example, can blanket an area in smoke while Kuroari fires weapons at the blinded opponent. Karasu can also disassemble itself to reveal many concealed weapons that impale an opponent it has navigated into Kuroari's torso.

[edit] Temari

Template:Nihongo is the oldest child of the Fourth Kazekage, making her the older sister of Gaara and Kankuro. She is generally overbearing, if not crude, toward those around her, often not being afraid to speak her mind. Temari seems to value peace, and questions Sunagakure's justifications for going to war with Konohagakure. This trait carries over to Part II where she begins acting as a liaison between Sunagakure and Konoha as the two villages prepare for the next Chunin Exam. Many of Temari's appearances are associated with Shikamaru Nara. The two face each other during the Chunin Exam in Part I, where Shikamaru forfeits his match instead of defeating Temari. Temari later comes to his aid during the Sasuke Retrieval arc and defeats Tayuya to save him. Shikamaru returns the favor in the last of the anime's filler arcs and saves her from one of the Shiitenshounin. In addition, the two are seen together in their Part II debuts. Naruto Uzumaki asks if the two are on a date, though both state that this is not the case.

Temari is a keen analyst, and can deduce an opponent's strategies and weaknesses soon after a battle begins. For actual combat she uses her giant iron fan that, in addition to serving as a makeshift club, she can use to glide upon for short distances. The fan's primary usage is for performing Template:Nihongo, which creates guidable gusts of wind that she can use to attack opponents over long distances. The winds her fans create can also be formed into tornadoes that immobilize opponents and leave them open to attack. Particularly strong winds can also be used to manipulate the surrounding environment to her advantage, such as uprooting trees to eliminate any potential cover. Temari is able to use the fan as a medium for summoning Template:Nihongo, a one-eyed weasel that creates gusts of wind for Temari that are capable of decimating an entire forest.

[edit] Hiruko

Template:Nihongo was once a great shinobi of the Sand Village. However, once he died, he became one of Sasori's first human puppets and one of his favorites. As a puppet, he serves as Sasori's "puppet armor" as he can hide inside of him. Chiyo states that Hiruko has changed since she saw him 20 years ago and indicates to Sakura that he has increased his overall defense with the shell he has on his back as well as a new arm-type addition.

[edit] Karura

  • Age: ? (deceased)

Template:Nihongo is the wife of the former Kazekage, and the mother of Gaara, Kankuro, and Temari. Against her wishes, her husband had the spirit of Shukaku sealed within her unborn son. She died while giving birth to Gaara as a result of this. Before she died, she cursed Sunagakure, hoping her son would avenge her death and the horror she had been put through. Due to his uncle's words concerning the nature of his powers, Gaara became confused and came to view Shukaku as an extension of his mother, and the sand as a manifestation of her love. During his battle with Sasuke, Gaara tried to talk to her, but his words strongly indicate he was speaking with Shukaku.

The name "Karura" is made up of three kanji. Ka (加) means "Addition" or "Include", Ru (琉) means "Lapis lazuli" and Ra (羅) comes from the word Ashura (阿修羅) "Fighting demon". In Japanese folklore, Lapis lazuli is a sacred stone in which the power of Buddha dwells. So the name Karura could be interpreted as meaning "Addition of (Buddha's) power to the demon". This is exactly what Karura did: she gave the demon more power by feeding it with her hatred.

[edit] Matsuri

Matsuri, meaning "festival", is a student of Sunagakure's new ninja school. She is the only person out of the entire class to choose Gaara to be her teacher and refers to him as "Gaara-sensei." She has a fear of weapons after witnessing the murder of her parents. She was kidnapped by the Shitenshounin to try to lure Gaara out so that they could steal the Shukaku's chakra to use in resurrecting Takumi Village's founder Seimei, and thereby take revenge on the five great nations who had been oppressing their village for the past century. After being freed, she saves Naruto from a fatal attack from Seimei using her jouhyou after realizing that weapons can be used to protect comrades. After Seimei's defeat, she returns to Sunagakure with Gaara, Kankuro, and Temari. But before she leaves, she asks Shikamaru to tell Naruto that he had made her understand what Gaara was trying to tell her and that she will continue to train as Gaara's student.

Matsuri makes her first post-timeskip appearance in Naruto Shippūden as part of the Suna ninja team Temari had assembled to aid in rescuing Gaara. Since then, she, along with Temari's team, have been sent to patrol a border crossing. Matsuri seems to have undergone a personality change since her becoming Gaara's student; she is no longer the shy girl afraid of weapons, and has become somewhat outspoken, as when she complains to Temari about how they should be trying to rescue Gaara rather than defending the border against countries that might seek to take advantage of the Kazekage's absence. She later appears after Gaara's resurrection, praising him with the rest of their village and boasting about his powers.

[edit] Monzaemon Chikamatsu

  • Age: ? (deceased)

Monzaemon Chikamatsu, named after the real life puppeteer Chikamatsu Monzaemon, is the inventor of the art of puppetry. Originally using puppets as a source of entertainment, Chikamatsu worked diligently with several shinobi to convert the talent into a unique form of combat. Eventually, he created the Puppet Technique, in which chakra strings are used to control puppets.

Being the creator of the technique, Chikamatsu was the very first puppet master, and as such he created the Template:Nihongo. The puppets, reportedly strong enough to take down an entire castle, were designed to work together and as such were much more powerful than the standard puppet. One such example is the puppets' use of Template:Nihongo, which consists of the combining of three puppets to create a vortex that sucks in everything in range. Each of the ten puppets is controlled by a single chakra string from one of the user's ten fingers. It is unknown how Chiyo acquired them, but she is skilled in their use, as seen when she uses them against Sasori.

[edit] Sasori's parents

  • Age: ? (both deceased)

Sasori's parents were killed at the hands of Sakumo Hatake, leaving Sasori in the care of Chiyo for much of his adolescence. After learning the art of puppetry, Sasori created puppets with their likeness in the hopes that doing so would help him feel loved. Because they were still only puppets this failed, and Sasori lost interest in the two and left them behind when he left Sunagakure. With his departure, the puppets came into the possession of Chiyo, and she added weapons to both so that they could be used in battle. During Chiyo's battle with Sasori years later, Chiyo uses the puppets against Sasori, though he easily disables both. Despite this, Chiyo uses the puppets to stab Sasori through the heart in the form of a hug, allowing him to be close to them in death as he couldn't be in life.

Sasori's parents are never named; they are only referred to as Template:Nihongo and Template:Nihongo.

[edit] Yashamaru

Template:Nihongo was a medic-nin, the younger brother of Karura, and thus the uncle of Gaara, Kankuro and Temari (though in some languages he is mistaken to be female). At first, Gaara thought that he was the only one that cared about him. Yashamaru taught Gaara about physical pain, emotional pain and love; concepts Gaara was completely unaware of in his childhood. He was commanded by the Fourth Kazekage to assassinate Gaara, but was given the choice in deciding whether he wanted to proceed or not. Yashamaru willingly accepted the command in order to avenge his older sister's premature death. The assassination attempt, however, ended in a desperate suicide mission and ultimately failed. Before he died, he told Gaara that no one had ever really loved him, not even him, despite trying his hardest to. Before dying in a failed attempt to kill Gaara by activating exploding tags on his body, he said, "This is it. Please die." (This was changed to "This is the end." in the English dub) The realization that even Yashamaru hated him caused Gaara to become psychotic, and influenced his belief that he should only live for himself.

Yashamaru's name, 夜叉丸, is composed of three Kanji. The first two, Yasha (夜叉) is the Japanese name for the Hindu Yaksha. Yakshas are usually portrayed as having two sides: a darker, more sinister side, and a benevolent, lovable side. Yashamaru's betrayal could be a reference to this "dark side" of Yakshas. Maru (丸) is a common ending for male names. In Buddhist mythology, the yakṣa are the attendants of Vaiśravaṇa,the twelve heavenly generals who guard the Buddha of Medicine, which connects to the fact that Yashamaru is a medic-nin.
