Techniques

Sharingan (pp. 192–193)

Copy Wheel Eye[1] (写輪眼, Sharingan)

  • Kekkei Genkai, No rank, Supplementary, All ranges)
  • User(s): Sasuke Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake

The Heavenly Eye[2] dōjutsu that is passed down in the Uchiha clan, who inherited the blood gifted by the Heavens!!

The kekkei genkai hidden within the blood of the Uchiha clan, the most excellent family lineage in Konoha. The pupils' tomoe-shaped marks are characteristic of this unique ability, which only appears in a small fraction of people, even within the clan. These pupils grant the Eye of Insight (洞察眼, Dōsatsugan), which can see through everything[3], and the powerful Eye of Hypnotism (催眠眼, Saimingan). Furthermore, it grants a technique-duplicating ability, which allows one to memorise and copy the techniques one sees in an instant. As Kakashi showed by using the Sharingan to make it seem as if he were predicting the future during his fight against Zabuza, the variation in the user's offence and defence can come close to infinity, depending on how the user uses it.

[picture of Sasuke's Sharingan]

↑ Sasuke's Sharingan differs somewhat from Kakashi's. Could it be it is not perfected yet, or is there something else?

↓→ After undergoing it only once, he made Lee's taijutsu his own!!

Hakkeshō Kaiten (p. 216)

Eight Trigrams Palm[4] Revolving Heaven[5] (八卦掌回天, Hakkeshō Kaiten)

  • Taijutsu, Kekkei Genkai, No rank, Defensive, Short range (0–5m)
  • User(s): Hyūga Neji

[pictures of Neji using Kaiten to deflect attacks]

←When an enemy's attack is sensed using the Byakugan with its near-360° field of vision, the Kaiten begins…!!

Putting the Gentle Fist to practical use
One more absolute defence!!

A taijutsu that catches an enemy attack by releasing a large amount of chakra from the chakra holes throughout the body, and then repels it by revolving the body. It is a secret technique that is orally handed down only within the main house of the Hyūga, but Hyūga Neji was able to learn it on his own, despite being from a branch family. Because of its reputation of rivalling the 'ultimate defence' of Gaara's sand, it is called "one more absolute defence". During the chūnin exams, this high-class taijutsu brought to light Neji's abundant talent…!!

Hakke Rokujūyonshō (p. 217)

Eight Trigrams[4] Sixty-Four Palms (八卦六十四掌, Hakke Rokujūyonshō)

  • Taijutsu, Kekkei Genkai, No rank, Offensive, Short range (0–5m)
  • User(s): Hyūga Neji

Mastered on his own using his innate talent!
The Hyūga main family's hidden treasure[6] of the Gentle Fist!!

A taijutsu that should only have been passed down in the main house of the Hyūga. However, Neji, being from a branch family, was able to master this secret technique using only his own perception and talent. With the Byakugan's 360° field of vision, the user envisions an Eight Trigrams circle. Then the enemy within this circle is hit with a series of violent blows. By striking sixty-four of the tenketsu[7] throughout the body, the opponent's chakra flow is stopped, making them unable to even stand. It is a dangerous technique that appropriately is handed down from father to only a single child within the Hyūga clan!

[pictures of Neji standing in the Hakke diagram]

↑The Eight Trigrams field rises to the surface. Neji's nature surprises even the main house…!!

Byakugan (p. 218)

White Eyes[8] (白眼, Byakugan)

  • Kekkei Genkai, No rank, Supplementary, All ranges)
  • User(s): Hyūga Neji, Hyūga Hinata

Inherited within the Hyūga clan
The white eyes that see through everything!!

[picture of Neji and Hinata activating their Byakugan]

↑When the Byakugan ability is activated, the excess power causes the blood vessels around the user's eyes to rise to the surface!

Within the village of Konohagakure, the Hyūga clan is a distinguished family, considered together with the Uchiha clan as a pair of bright jewels. The kekkei genkai handed down within that Hyūga family is the Byakugan. While using the power of the Byakugan, the user can see through whatever is blocking his view, and perceive things in far-away locations. However, the Byakugan is endowed with an even more astonishing ability. That is, it can even see the 'meridian system' through which chakra flows through the body, and the chakra holes that serve to release chakra from the body. Thanks to this ability, the Hyūga are praised as the clan holding the most excellent kekkei genkai, and therefore, their tragic history was repeated…

[pictures of Neji's chakra system as seen through the Byakugan]

←How does chakra flow around inside the body…? If you use the power of the Byakugan, even that is easy to find out like this.

References

  1. The name of the Sharingan might be a pun on the Japanese word sharin (車輪, cart wheel).
  2. The term 'Heavenly Eye' (天眼, Tengen, Tengan) is from Buddhism, where it refers to clairvoyant eyes, capable of seeing through everything.
  3. The verb used here in Japanese (見透かす, misukasu) does not necessarily mean 'to literally see through things'. It can, and often does, have the metaphorical meaning of 'to see through the truth behind things'.
  4. 4.0 4.1 The Eight Trigrams (Bāguà in Chinese) come from Taoist cosmology and are closely related to the concept of Yin-Yang. There is a Chinese martial art based on this concept: Bāguàzhǎng (八卦掌, Hakkeshō in Japanese), literally meaning Eight Trigrams Palm. It's an internal (內家, nèijiā) martial art, like Tàijíquán. The Hyūga-style taijutsu is obviously based on this martial art. Not only is this evident from the names of their techniques, but also from the symbolism surrounding them. E.g. when Neji does the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, a Bāguà diagram appears beneath him.
  5. Kaiten (回天; Literally meaning "revolving heaven") is a term used to refer to turning the tides, fighting back up from a weak position. When written as 回転, kaiten means 'revolving', 'spinning'. This technique in a way combines both words into one.
  6. The term used here, mongai fushutsu (門外不出), literally means 'never take it outside the gates'. It refers to something like an heirloom or work of art that is considered so valuable, it may never be taken outside the house or even be shown to others.
  7. The concept of tenketsu (点穴; Literally meaning "point holes") is better known in the West as 'Dim Mak' or the 'Touch of Death': the fictional ability (literally, it originated in wǔxiá novels) to kill a person by merely hitting a single point on the body. In Naruto — as in real life in many cases — this concept has been merged with the acupuncture concept of pressure points.
  8. In Japanese, the term 'white eyes' (白眼, 白目, shirome, hakugan) refers to the sclera, the white of the eyes. It is also used to refer to cold, unwelcoming eyes or glaring.
