Feel free to discuss them at the talk page.

Currently brainstorming for three element combinations, ideas are welcome

Disclaimer for the Naruto fandom: I know that through the internet, my ideas have found their way into rpgs, fanfics, fanon sites in general. I know that some of them have linked back to this page, and I appreciate it. I have no power to prevent people from using these ideas, but I would like to ask those who do to follow suit, and credit me if you have used my ideas. Just a link back to this page will suffice. If you use the icons as well, I would appreciate it if you credited ShounenSuki with their creation, as I'm sure he would agree as well.

About this page
Question mark denotes unknown combinations, italicized denotes elements with unconfirmed composition, anime only image version here.
+
This page is something I created early October in 2009. Around this time, the manga was showing the Kage Summit and its fights. New advanced natures suddenly appeared, going from three to seven in about four chapters, some not making sense (Blaze Release). I felt that some visual way to show what these natures were made of was required, such as showing which advanced natures could be done from a certain basic nature. That need made this page, and though the article ended up using the svg image it uses today, I kept this page because it was a place I could put down my ideas on which combination was what, in the case of the ones that didn't have their components presented in a way you could know for sure what they were. It was a way to try making sense of it all.

 +
It also lead me to think up natures that I thought would be viable candidates for combinations that had yet to be introduced. Blaze Release in particular was a pain, because nothing we knew gave it a satisfactory explanation to me.
 +
I filled up all ten possibilities with confirmed combinations and my own theories, as ideas came up. Fast-forward almost a year, into September 2010, and Madara shed some light on Yin and Yang. Blaze made much more sense, and it opened up eleven new combinations, one of which fit Blaze Release very well to me. Once again, ideas filled the spots, some of them even suggested by other editors here.
 +
 +
All I had to do was update things as more natures were revealed, such as Scorch and Explosion. Then in January 2011, everything that was nice and neat and complete went up flames as Kishimoto revealed triple combinations. I didn't enjoy it. The fact we had seven basic components and many possible arrangements meant that the theoretical number of possible combinations went way up. I used some of my disproved ideas for two-element combinations where I could adapt them. I waited until I had enough ideas to publish so the page didn't look so empty.
 +
 +
I don't expect any more triple combinations to be revealed in the manga, though I do feel that Kishimoto will finish introducing non Yin-Yang two-element combinations, as well as explore more of Yin and Yang. Now I simply add new ideas as they come if I deem them good enough. This is to me a creative exercise. Sometimes when I least expect, I'll get an idea that fits a tough combination, such as Dawn Release (though not as Dawn Release, see the reasoning section for that one).
 +
All in all, this was an attempt to make sense of what Kishimoto would do to nature transformation that took way bigger proportions that I ever intended it to.

| Certain types of crystal-like glass called fulgurites are created when conductive minerals containing silica, usually sand, are struck by lightning, which alters the their molecular structure, creating a specific and precise spatial geometry. This is consistent with the creation of Guren's crystals, as revealed by a Kabuto-controlled Rinji.
+
| Yin Release is responsible for "creating form", in a significantly different way from shape transformation. Applying that principle to earth natured chakra could account for its unique characteristics and precise spatial geometry. The process of crystallization could be due to the earth natured chakra capacity to "change the hardness and composition of all objects", made more complex by the "creating form" aspect of Yin chakra.
| Crystal Release is created through the as-of-yet not fully understood Yin and Yang manipulation of earth natured chakra.

This is consistent with the creation of Guren's crystals, as revealed by a Kabuto-controlled Rinji. Guren was said to be able to crystallize anything, including air moisture. Crystallization of many materials might be explained by the earth natured chakra, said to be able to "change the hardness and composition of all objects", meaning it could change materials into something which can be crystallized, and lightning natured chakra, which would provide energy to trigger the process.

Also possible to be the earth equivalent of Blaze Release, being a stronger type of earth, in this case a class of minerals.

| A blaze is an intensely burning fire. Also the character for blaze (炎) is made up by two fire characters (火), suggesting added intensity. Amaterasu, whose flames are said to be as hot as the sun are manipulated with Blaze Release. It's possible it's a Mangekyo Sharingan skill.
+
| Since Sasuke began his vendetta against Konoha, his chakra has often been described cold and dark, traits which are associated with the Yin principle. Yin Release is focused on the spiritual energy and deals with imagination and form. This also makes sense comparing these characteristics with Sasuke's fighting style. He uses genjutsu, which affect the mind, and his Fire Release and Lightning Release techniques are usually variations of a single technique, such as his many forms of Chidori. Blaze Release at first seemed to be shape transformation applied to Amaterasu, but it might not be the case, since there is no other known chakra nature whose name was changed just because it had shape transformation applied. This might also happen because Amaterasu, being such a powerful Fire Release technique, can't be manipulated through simple shape transformation, requiring it to be modified through other means, that being Yin Release.

| Blaze is a combination of fire and lightning natures, both of which are Sasuke's natures. Both fire and lightning are composed of plasma, which is a very energized state of matter. Unlikely as the Sharingan isn't an element-combining kekkei genkai. It also can't copy advanced nature jutsu, as stated by Kakashi.

| Dark Release techniques are said to be used to "absorb, manipulate, and release chakra taken from an opponent". According to our current definitions in basic element release articles, lightning is the only case in which chakra is actually converted into the element, other natures either change already existing objects, or take on specific properties depending on which nature is used. By extending that conversion potential, one can achieve greater, yet similar results, consistent with Dark Release jutsu. There's a small semantic connection via Kakuzu's Lightning Release: False Darkness. Also the most logical combination left considering the other options.
+
| Dark Release techniques are used to "absorb, manipulate, and release chakra taken from an opponent". Lightning chakra is created by intense vibrations, resulting in charges and electric energy. Applying the form creating properties of Yin Release to that could account for acquisition and further manipulation of chakra, which is a trait of the Dark Release ninjutsu.
| Dark Release is the result of lightning chakra which has been modified using as-of-yet not fully understood Yin and Yang manipulation, which is known to be the source of the Nara clan shadow techniques, though those are not consistent with the effects of Dark Release techniques. Yin and Yang might also be involved with similar canon techniques Chakra Absorption Technique and Blocking Technique Absorption Seal, the later being highly likely to have Yin and Yang involvement, as the Rinnegan allows the use of the six nature transformation changes, the sixth being widely believed to be some sort of Yin and Yang manipulation.

| Explosion Release is composed of Fire Release and Lightning Release. Both are forms of energy and can cause explosions, donating energy to a system to the point that bonds between matter break.
 +
| Whenever something is struck by lightning, it receives a massive surge of energy, and can cause it to explode. Earth-natured chakra is known to change the composition of materials. Explosion Release may consist in changing things into a highly explosive material, and then causing it to explode.

| Scorching happens when something is damaged by heat, usually causing visible marks such as discolouration, akin to burn marks, and shrivelling, if the damage occurs to something which can be dehydrated. It isn't necessarily caused by fire. The wind-natured chakra could be changed by the heat of the fire-natured chakra, loosing its usual sharpness, but becoming more "permeable", so it can enter in objects and cause the damage Scorch Release does.

 +
| Magnetism refers to the property of some materials to respond to magnetic fields. Since Magnet Release seems to involve not only the manipulation of magnetic fields, but magnetising other objects as well, something has to account for that. Lightning Release is most likely a component due to the existence of electromagnetism, one of the four major forces in the universe, which causes the interaction between charged particles. Earth Release is also a possible component, as magnetism is usually associated with ferromagnetism, the most common kind of magnetism, is the one present in regular magnets. Also due to the effect of making something magnetic, Earth Release could be involved due to "changing the composition of things", which in this case would create the magnetic property in tandem with Lightning Release.
 +
| An alternative is for Magnet Release to be composed of Lightning Release and Wind Release. Lightning Release would be involved due to already explained reasons, and Wind Release would be involved because as a good electrical insulator, it could be involved somehow in maintaining the magnetic field created by the electrical current or shaping it once it's created. Similar to how I suppose it acts in Scorch Release, the lightning quality would use the wind-natured to enter something and magnetise it.
 +

Also possible, but extremely unlikely, to be a combination of fire and wind natures, through a symbolic interpretation of darkness being the product of a fire which was blown out by a strong enough air current, ceasing to give away light.

| Steel is an alloy, mostly composed of iron and carbon, with varying qualities, created by the purification of raw minerals. It can be interpreted symbolically as a stronger type of earth. Earth natured chakra already accounts for "the ability to change the hardness and composition of all objects", allowing to "cause an object to be as solid as metal or soft as clay". Kakuzu's Earth Release: Earth Spear is an example, Steel Release could account for more varied and more powerful techniques.

There have been sound techniques, none of which were the product of elemental techniques, though all of them were instrument based. Applying the form creating aspect of Yin Release to Wind Release could act in a way to change the nature of the wind into vibrating waves.
 +
| It has been suggested that sound could be achieved by using Wind Release and Lightning Release, the vibrating nature of Lightning Release being passed on to the wind chakra, resulting in sound.

| A Purification nature, yielding Purification Release ninjutsu. This was a tough one. Fire, water, and electricity are all associated purity in one way or another. Fire and heat burn, melt and evaporate several substances, effectively separating them by physical characteristics, such as melting and evaporation temperatures. Some religions also consider burning something as a form of purification, riddance of impurities, or else burning something to purify an ambient. Similarly, water also has strong ties with the concept of purity. Potable water needs to be clean so it can be used to drink, and scientific research often makes use of water that has been extensively purified until the only thing dissolved in the water are its own ions. Water is also associated with purity and cleansing in religion. Lightning, also as holy in some religions and mythology, and electricity, which is also used in some purification processes, for example, in purifying ore to produce metal. I see Purification Release ninjutsu as techniques which can be used to discriminate between targets, for example, harming only certain individuals, or else targeting only specific materials, at user discretion.

Most naturally occurring glasses, such as fulgurite (see Crystal Release alternative theory) and obsidian are created when minerals are heated and then cooled. Because of their non-crystalline structure, glasses can be sharper than many other metal blades. In this case, lightning would be responsible for the heating of the earth (the mineral), and the wind would cool it down, similar to how it would act on water to create Ice Release (see Joule–Thomson effect). Wind would also account for the already mentioned sharpness.

In arid places, the ground can show dessication cracks and the air have very low humidity, making it unhealthy to breathe in. Yin's form creation aspects could play on those characteristics of earth and wind, dehydrating what it hits. The Yin principle doesn't correspond to actual dryness in real life, that would be Yang, but since it's associated with dampness, it can also work by removing water from things to make itself damp.

The friction removes a particle from metal (usually iron or an iron-containing alloy), which heats up and reacts with the oxygen, creating a spark that can ignite proper materials. Quickness and brightness, which the flint creates with the spark, are traits associated with the Yang principle.

Stronger counterpart table
 +
Under the theory that same element combinations aren't possible, it is possible that there are natures which are simply stronger counterparts. This table includes my thoughts on what each basic nature, and each advanced nature (both confirmed and main theories of tables above) has as a stronger counterpart. Because some of the stronger counterparts themselves are listed in my main theory as partially Yin or Yang, Yin and Yang combinations (Blaze, Radiation, Typhoon, Sound, Dark, Light, Crystal, Land, Brine and Wave) won't be listed as being a weaker counterpart, since that would mean there are three "strength tiers", something even I deem too speculative.

| Yin Release is the basis of Genjutsu, the Nara Clan's shadow techniques, several other mind-based ninjutsu, such as the Yamanaka Clan's mind techniques, Absorption Soul Technique and Magic Lantern Body Technique, and the Sharingan.
 +
| Yin Release deals with the spiritual energy and imagination. These techniques deal mainly with the mind, and the shadows themselves have no mass, being merely manipulated shape of the objects from which they're formed. The Sharingan abilities fit the concept of Yin Release, which ties to genjutsu and perception of form. While Sharingan wielders can copy techniques easily, they must have the appropriate stamina to replicate them.

| Yang Release is the basis of medical ninjutsu, the Akimichi Clan's techniques, the Four Legs Technique of the Inuzuka Clan and is related to Shikotsumyaku, Sakon and Ukon's Kekkei Genkai and Byakugan.
 +
| Yang Release deals with the physical energy and vitality. These techniques deal with restoration and "activation" of the body in a number of ways, from stimulating healing and energizing the body to actual manipulation of body structure. The first two kekkei genkai mentioned deal with specific manipulation of bodily structure and functions. Despite the suggestions that Byakugan and Sharingan are related, which would mean the Byakugan is more Yin oriented, the Byakugan is the foundation of a taijutsu fighting style, rooted on attacking the inside of the body.

| Yin–Yang Release techniques include Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, as well as all Reincarnation Ninjutsu.
 +
| The Rinnegan allows the use of Yin–Yang Release. If medical ninjutsu is Yang Release oriented, and it can't bring back the dead, Yin–Yang Release can. Reincarnation Ninjutsu involves the restoration of a deceased, in the Outer Path's case by restoring the soul to its body, reuniting the Yin (soul) with the Yang (body). Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation ties the soul to this world, but in this case in another vessel, one that the soul doesn't depend on to remain, as it regenerates.

The Sand Issue
 +
 +
Ever since advanced natures were revealed as being composed of more than one basic nature, it has been speculated that Shukaku's, and by extension Gaara's sand abilities, are an advanced nature, more specifically composed by Wind Release and Earth Release. The purpose of this section is to analyse the pros and cons of this theory.
 +
 +
Pros:
 +
#Sand being the result of wind and earth is a reasonable, logical, possible outcome.
 +
#Shukaku is already known to use Wind Release.
 +
#There is another Tailed Beast which is known to have an advanced nature, which is also used by its jinchūriki. Rōshi is the jinchūriki of the Four-Tails, and because of it, he can use its Lava Release.
 +
#The only other known nature which could fit this combination, Dust Release, has been revealed to be composed not only by earth and wind, but also by fire, leaving this spot open.
 +
#It wouldn't be the first time an element-like technique would be revealed as an actual element. Haku used Ice Release very early in part I, long before the concept of advanced natures was introduced. Deidara's techniques, though not as old as Haku's, were also recently revealed to be a product of an elemental kekkei genkai, Explosion Release. Magnetic abilities also turned out to be a nature transformation kekkei genkai.
 +
#Most sand techniques aren't ranked in databooks. There is a precedent for a technique which isn't supposed to be ranked being ranked in the databooks ("Water Release: Great Water Arm Technique", which is hiden).
 +
#Hashirama's signature Wood Release technique, which is a kekkei genkai, was labelled as hiden in the First Databook, showing that while uncommon, those changes can happen.
 +
 +
Cons:
 +
#Sand has never been mentioned as an advanced nature, neither in-universe nor in any other official sources, such as databooks.
 +
#The sand techniques shown so far differ from usual element techniques in that it was never created out of chakra alone. More sand was either collected from the surrounding area, made by crushing nearby minerals, or appeared as a manifestation of Shukaku itself when Gaara would relinquish control to it, transforming into it.
 +
#Neither Shukaku nor Gaara were ever shown nor mentioned as Earth Release users.
 +
#The one technique which uses sand and has an elemental prefix indicates sand as a subset of Wind Release techniques. Wind Release: Infinite Sand Cloud — Great Breakthrough.
 +
#At least one sand technique ("Sand Binding Prison") has been ranked in databooks. Advanced natures are kekkei genkai, and those techniques aren't ranked.
 +
 +
In my opinion, sand will turn out to be an advanced nature. Considering the above, specially pro points three to five, the revelation of sand as full fledged advanced nature is possible, and even likely, though not necessarily eminent. The best possible moment for this to happen was the confrontation between Gaara and his father in the Fourth Shinobi World War. Gaara was trained by his father when he was little, so the Fourth Kazekage has knowledge of his abilities, and since his death, Gaara is certain to have improved, both good build-ups for the revelation of sand as an advanced nature composed of Wind Release and Earth Release, the Sand Release. But alas, that didn't happen.

| The revelation of Explosion Release as a kekkei genkai. At first, considering that Deidara was also known for using Earth Release, I figured it had to be one of its components, and the only earth combination that made sense in creating explosions was lightning. The revelation of Magnet Release as a kekkei genkai also presented an equally suited candidate for the earth and lightning combination, with the added bonus of being higher in canon scale.

These are my own ideas and speculations, do not take it as canon!!!

About this page Edit

It also lead me to think up natures that I thought would be viable candidates for combinations that had yet to be introduced. Blaze Release in particular was a pain, because nothing we knew gave it a satisfactory explanation to me.

All in all, this was an attempt to make sense of what Kishimoto would do to nature transformation that took way bigger proportions that I ever intended it to.

Nature Icon Crystal

Nature Icon Earth

Nature Icon Yin
Yin
Yin Release is responsible for "creating form", in a significantly different way from shape transformation. Applying that principle to earth natured chakra could account for its unique characteristics and precise spatial geometry. The process of crystallization could be due to the earth natured chakra capacity to "change the hardness and composition of all objects", made more complex by the "creating form" aspect of Yin chakra. Crystal Release is created through Earth Release and Lightning Release.

Nature Icon Blaze

Nature Icon Yin
Yin
Nature Icon Dark
Dark
Nature Icon Lightning
Lightning
Nature Icon Yin
Yin
Dark Release techniques are used to "absorb, manipulate, and release chakra taken from an opponent". Lightning chakra is created by intense vibrations, resulting in charges and electric energy. Applying the form creating properties of Yin Release to that could account for acquisition and further manipulation of chakra, which is a trait of the Dark Release ninjutsu. None.
Nature Icon Swift

Nature Icon Wind

Nature Icon Lightning
Lightning
Air friction decreases the acceleration of fast moving objects, decreasing the air resistance allows faster movement. Lightning chakra has been proved to increase the speed of movement and reaction, as seen with the A's Lightning Release Chakra Mode, which vastly amplifies the effects of his Body Flicker Technique. None.
Nature Icon Explosion

Nature Icon Fire

Nature Icon Lightning
Lightning
Explosion Release is composed of Fire Release and Lightning Release. Both are forms of energy and can cause explosions, donating energy to a system to the point that bonds between matter break. Whenever something is struck by lightning, it receives a massive surge of energy, and can cause it to explode. Earth-natured chakra is known to change the composition of materials. Explosion Release may consist in changing things into a highly explosive material, and then causing it to explode.
Nature Icon Scorch
Scorch
Nature Icon Fire
Fire
Nature Icon Wind
Wind
Scorching happens when something is damaged by heat, usually causing visible marks such as discolouration, akin to burn marks, and shrivelling, if the damage occurs to something which can be dehydrated. It isn't necessarily caused by fire. The wind-natured chakra could be changed by the heat of the fire-natured chakra, loosing its usual sharpness, but becoming more "permeable", so it can enter in objects and cause the damage Scorch Release does. None.
Nature Icon Magnet
Magnet
Nature Icon Lightning
Lightning
Nature Icon Earth
Earth

Nature Icon Light
Light
Nature Icon Lightning
Lightning
Nature Icon Yang
Yang
A Light (光, Hikari) nature, allowing Light Release (光遁, Kōton) ninjutsu. Lightning Release techniques already employ use of a powerful, light-giving energy, that being electricity. Light is associated with the Yang principle. Luminous energy can be created from electrical energy, as seen with lamps. Techniques involving light are possible, since Hiding with Camouflage Technique involves the refraction of light using chakra. Light Release being composed of Fire Release and Lightning Release. Fire and lightning both give off light. Heat and electricity are both forms of energy. Combining them could produce yet another form of energy, that being luminous energy, in an process similar to photovoltaic cells and thermal collectors can change light into electricity and heat, only in the opposite direction.
Nature Icon Typhoon

Nature Icon Yang
Yang
A Typhoon (颱風, Taifū) nature, allowing Typhoon Release (颱遁, Taiton) ninjutsu. A typhoon, like a cyclone or a hurricane, is a weather phenomenon, consisting of circulating wind currents. It could be created by using the life and vitality/strength of Yang Release to increase the power of Wind Release, resulting in this nature. None.
Nature Icon Wave
Wave
Nature Icon Water

Nature Icon Yang
Yang
A Wave (波, Nami) nature, allowing Wave Release (波遁, Haton) ninjutsu. Waves are water bodies in movement. The life and physical energy of Yang Release could empower Water Release to a degree it can become much more powerful than standard Water Release. An Ocean (大洋, Taiyō) nature, allowing Ocean Release (洋遁, Yōton) ninjutsu. An ocean is an immense body of water.
Nature Icon Radiation
Radiation
Nature Icon Fire

Nature Icon Yang
Yang
A Radiation (放射, Hōsha) nature, allowing Radiation Release (放遁, Hōton) ninjutsu. Fire Release deals with the product of combustion. Empowering such process with the life energy of Yang Release could result in a highly exothermic process, that being radioactive decay. Radiation Release could be used to produce extreme heat, as well as ionizing radiation, potentially causing radiation poisoning. None.
Nature Icon Sound
Sound
Nature Icon Wind
Wind
Nature Icon Yin
Yin
A Sound (音, Oto) nature, allowing Sound Release (音遁, Onton) ninjutsu. Sound is formed by the oscillation of pressure through a medium, usually air. There have been sound techniques, none of which were the product of elemental techniques, though all of them were instrument based. Applying the form creating aspect of Yin Release to Wind Release could act in a way to change the nature of the wind into vibrating waves. It has been suggested that sound could be achieved by using Wind Release and Lightning Release, the vibrating nature of Lightning Release being passed on to the wind chakra, resulting in sound.

A Pressure (圧力, Atsuryoku) nature, allowing Pressure Release (圧遁, Atton) ninjutsu. The atmosphere pushes everything in it through pressure, but is usually canceled by an equal force with the same module and direction, but of opposite orientation, by the atmosphere itself. Damage such as the ones caused by blades, similar to Wind Release, are caused because too much force is applied in a small area. Pressure related techniques are possible, as seen with Kakuzu's Wind Release: Pressure Damage.

Nature Icon Land
Land
Nature Icon Earth

Nature Icon Yang
Yang
A Land (土地, Tochi) nature, yielding Land Release (地遁, Chiton) ninjutsu. Land is everything that isn't covered by a body of water. Yang Release's life energy could significantly empower earth natured chakra, giving it much more potency. A Soil (土壌, Dojō) nature, yielding Soil Release (壌遁, Jōton) ninjutsu. Similar to Land Release theory, may actually be the same thing under a different name.

A Mountain (山, Yama) nature, yielding Mountain Release (山遁, Santon) ninjutsu. A mountain is a rock formation, shaped as a peak.

Nature Icon Brine
Brine
Nature Icon Water

Nature Icon Yin
Yin
A Brine (塩水, Shiomizu) nature, yielding Brine Release (塩遁, Enton) ninjutsu. Brine is a highly salt-saturated water, more than saline water. Because it has such a high concentration of salt, it has different characteristics from fresh water. It shows much higher conductivity due to its high ion concentration, as well as increased boiling point and decreased freezing point. Yin Release's form creating powers could account for these changes in water natured chakra. None.

Nature Icon Dawn

Nature Icon Lightning

Nature Icon Wind
Wind
A Dawn (暁, Akatsuki) nature, yielding Dawn Release (暁遁, Gyōton) ninjutsu. Dawn is the period of time when it's no longer dark, but the sun has yet to rise. My original idea for this combination was an Aurora (赤気; 極光, Sekki; Kyokkō; Literally meaning "Red Atmosphere; Polar Light") nature. An aurora happens when solar wind is captured by the Earth's magnetic field, and then interacts with gases in the upper atmosphere. Because the Japanese for Aurora Release would result into names that make a poor description of what it actually is, I was suggested to make a more symbolic approach. Aurora is the Roman goddess of the dawn, and also the word for dawn in Latin and Latin-derived languages.
Nature Icon Cloud

Nature Icon Fire
Fire
Nature Icon Wind
Wind
A Cloud (雲, Kumo) nature, yielding Cloud Release (雲遁, Unton) ninjutsu. Clouds are composed of evaporated water that has condensed in the atmosphere. Fire's heat would evaporate the water, which would then condense in the air. Ideally, I would list "steam" for this combination, but given that Han is said to use steam-based ninjutsu, which derives from his steam-armour, I had to think something else up.
Smoke Nature Icon

Nature Icon Yin
Yin
A Smoke (煙, Kemuri) nature, allowing Smoke Release (煙遁, Enton) ninjutsu. Smoke is the airborne product of combustion. When a flame is fanned, it burns faster, consuming more fuel, generating more smoke. Since Fire Release and Wind Release will likely be revealed to produce Scorch Release, adding the form creating aspect of Yin Release could result into Smoke Release.

Nature Icon Yang
Yang
A Gas (気体, Kitai) nature, yielding Gas Release (気遁, Kiton) ninjutsu. Physically speaking, a substance in its gaseous state can't be condensed through isothermal compression, because it is beyond its critical temperature. In this case, the heating of wind by fire would be powered by Yang Release, resulting in the production of gas.

A Metal (金属, Kinzoku) nature, yielding Metal Release (金遁, Kinton) ninjutsu. Metals are chemical elements which are good conductors of heat and electricity, highly lustrous, and dense. In this case, the ore is purified from the earth by fire and electricity, becoming metal.
Nature Icon Purification

Nature Icon Water
Water
Nature Icon Lightning
Lightning
A Purification (純化, Junka) nature, yielding Purification Release (純遁, Junton) ninjutsu.

Nature Icon Yin
Yin
A Power (力, Chikara) nature, yielding Power Release (力遁, Rikiton) ninjutsu. Power is the rate at which energy is converted or work is performed. Fire and lightning are both events during which energy conversion happens. This would be manipulated by Yin Release, to account for versatility with which the energy could be used.
Nature Icon Star
Star
Nature Icon Fire

Nature Icon Yang
Yang
A Star (恒星, Kōsei) nature, yielding Star Release (星遁, Seiton) ninjutsu. Stars are bodies made of plasma that give off energy for millions of years. They're held together by gravity. Fire and lightning are both composed of plasma. Yang Release would magnify these characteristics.
Nature Icon Glass
Glass
Nature Icon Earth

Nature Icon Lightning
Lightning
Nature Icon Wind
Wind
A Glass (玻璃, Hari) nature, yielding Glass Release (玻遁, Haton) ninjutsu. Glass is an amorphous solid material. It is not considered a crystal because it doesn't present a characteristic crystalline molecular structure, hence its amorphous description.

A Sky (空, Sora) nature, yielding Sky Release (空遁, Kūton) ninjutsu. The sky is the upper part of the atmosphere, where meteorological events take place, such as storms, winds and lightning. Ideally, I would have used something that has more of a connection with the three components, but something which shows them all was the most I could come up with.
Nature Icon Implosion

An Implosion (爆縮, Bakushuku) nature, yielding Implosion Release (縮遁, Shukuton) ninjutsu. Unlike an explosion, in which energy radiates away from the source, in an implosion, the object collapses upon itself, as a result of being crushed by an outside force. Lightning's energy and wind's pressure would be shaped by Yin Release, acting around the target to bring it down.

Yang
A Pulse (波動, Hadō; Literally meaning "wave motion") nature, yielding Pulse Release (動遁, Dōton) ninjutsu. A pulse is a transient disturbance which propagates away from an origin point and propagates through a medium. Lightning's vibration would be compressed by wind's pressure, and then Yang's energy would cause it to radiate, generating a pulse.

A Rust (錆, Sabi) nature, yielding Rust Release (錆遁, Seiton) ninjutsu. Rust is a common term for iron oxides. Humidity and air slowly react with a metal, forming those mineral oxides. This nature wouldn't be solely based on rust itself, but rather on decay. Similar to Storm Release, which isn't really a storm, but an energy of sorts, Rust Release would be something akin to decay, decomposition, and rotting.

Nature Icon Yin
Yin
A Dry (乾燥, Kansō) nature, yielding Dry Release (乾遁, Kanton) ninjutsu. Dryness is the lack of water, which can happen for any number of reasons, for example, evaporation and chemical dehydration.

A Miasma (瘴気, Shōki) nature, yielding Miasma Release (瘴遁, Shōton) ninjutsu. Before the germ theory of disease, ailments were though to be transmitted through "miasma", a toxic gas or a bad air in general. Earth can be associated with dirt and impurity, and wind can travel far. Yang Release deals with energy and life-giving, so those can be applied to the earth component, stimulating the growth of pathogens. The Yang principle is also associated expansion, which would tie in with the idea of a spreading disease.

It is most commonly used for personal grooming, and in these instances, might also be called by the older term looking-glass. The oldest way to use a mirror is to look at pools of still water. Mirrors are produced by applying a reflective coating to a substrate. Ancient mirrors would usually use metals as the substrate. Dielectric mirrors are special mirrors which can reflect almost 100% of defined wavelengths.

A Flint (燧, Hiuchi) nature, yielding Flint Release (燧遁, Suiton) ninjutsu. A flint is a type of rock that produces sparks when struck against steel. It's one of the most ancient ways to make fire, and was widely used as to light gunpowder in what came to be known as flintlocks, as well as lighters, though it has been replaced by the man-made alloy ferrocerium, which is much more efficient in creating sparks for igniting purposes. The friction removes a particle from metal (usually iron or an iron-containing alloy), which heats up and reacts with the oxygen, creating a spark that can ignite proper materials. Quickness and brightness, which the flint creates with the spark, are traits associated with the Yang principle.

A Fluid (流体, Ryūtai) nature, yielding Fluid Release (流遁, Ryūton) ninjutsu. A fluid is something which shows relative ease to move in flow, and also tends to take the shape of its container. Fluid Release would take the properties of water and wind (liquid and gas, both fluids), and would pass them onto to a target through Yin Release's form creating capabilities, effectively making the target either liquid or gas, though without any addition of heat, fluidising it.

An Erasure (消去, Shōkyo) nature, yielding Erase Release (消遁, Shōton). Erasure is the act of removing something. Both wind and water are associated with removal of things, such as blowing stuff away (such as blowing out a fire, or blowing away dust) and washing out and diluting stuff. This nature would act using these qualities, associating them with Yang Release, which would create an imbalance of the target's Yin and Yang, overwhelming it with Yang, causing the Yin (responsible for form) to collapse.

A Health (健康, Kenkō) nature, yielding Health Release (健遁, Kenton) ninjutsu. Health refers to an overall condition. A person is considered healthy when there are no illnesses, physical or psychological, or metabolic dysfunction. One's metabolism is the complete set of reactions responsible for maintaining homoeostasis in an organism, and one of the most critical components in metabolism is temperature. Out of a certain temperature range, several metabolic pathways fail to function properly, which can lead to many illnesses, and also death. Animals which can regulate their own temperature, such as humans, are called homoeothermic or endothermic. While they can maintain a high metabolic activity for longer, they suffer more with greater temperature changes.

Stronger counterpart table Edit

Yin and Yang theories Edit

Nature Theory Reasoning
Nature Icon Yin
Yin
Yin Release is the basis of Genjutsu, the Nara Clan's shadow techniques, several other mind-based ninjutsu, such as the Yamanaka Clan's mind techniques, Absorption Soul Technique and Magic Lantern Body Technique, and the Sharingan.
Nature Icon Yang
Yang
Yang Release is the basis of medical ninjutsu, the Akimichi Clan's techniques, the Four Legs Technique of the Inuzuka Clan and is related to Shikotsumyaku, Sakon and Ukon's Kekkei Genkai and Byakugan.
Nature Icon Yin–Yang
Yin–Yang
Yin–Yang Release techniques include Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, as well as all Reincarnation Ninjutsu.

The Sand Issue Edit

Ever since advanced natures were revealed as being composed of more than one basic nature, it has been speculated that Shukaku's, and by extension Gaara's sand abilities, are an advanced nature, more specifically composed by Wind Release and Earth Release. The purpose of this section is to analyse the pros and cons of this theory.

Pros:

 1. Sand being the result of wind and earth is a reasonable, logical, possible outcome.
 2. Shukaku is already known to use Wind Release.
 3. There is another Tailed Beast which is known to have an advanced nature, which is also used by its jinchūriki. Rōshi is the jinchūriki of the Four-Tails, and because of it, he can use its Lava Release.
 4. The only other known nature which could fit this combination, Dust Release, has been revealed to be composed not only by earth and wind, but also by fire, leaving this spot open.
 5. It wouldn't be the first time an element-like technique would be revealed as an actual element.
 6. Most sand techniques aren't ranked in databooks. There is a precedent for a technique which isn't supposed to be ranked being ranked in the databooks ("Water Release: Great Water Arm Technique", which is hiden).
 7. Hashirama's signature Wood Release technique, which is a kekkei genkai, was labelled as hiden in the First Databook, showing that while uncommon, those changes can happen.

Cons:

 1. Sand has never been mentioned as an advanced nature, neither in-universe nor in any other official sources, such as databooks.
 2. The sand techniques shown so far differ from usual element techniques in that it was never created out of chakra alone. More sand was either collected from the surrounding area, made by crushing nearby minerals, or appeared as a manifestation of Shukaku itself when Gaara would relinquish control to it, transforming into it.
 3. Neither Shukaku nor Gaara were ever shown nor mentioned as Earth Release users.
 4. The one technique which uses sand and has an elemental prefix indicates sand as a subset of Wind Release techniques. Wind Release: Infinite Sand Cloud — Great Breakthrough.
 5. At least one sand technique ("Sand Binding Prison") has been ranked in databooks. Advanced natures are kekkei genkai, and those techniques aren't ranked.

Gaara was trained by his father when he was little, so the Fourth Kazekage has knowledge of his abilities, and since his death, Gaara is certain to have improved, both good build-ups for the revelation of sand as an advanced nature composed of Wind Release and Earth Release, the Sand Release (砂遁, Saton). But alas, that didn't happen.

Debunked Theories Edit

Former theories of mine that have been debunked since I first thought of them.

Debunked theory Fact/event which debunked the theory
Wind Release being combined with itself. A Vacuum (真空, Shinkū) nature, allowing Vacuum Release (空遁, Kūton) ninjutsu. Vacuum is a space devoid of matter. Most of the times, near vacuum spaces might have trace amounts of air. Removing said air could result in vacuum techniques. Danzō Shimura's techniques involve vacuum, all of them were simple, even if powerful Wind Release.
Nature Icon Steel Steel Release being a combination of Earth Release and Lightning Release. Steel is an alloy, mostly composed of iron and carbon, with varying qualities, created by the purification of raw minerals. One process that is used for such purification is an electrolytic cell. The combination of Earth Release and Lightning Release may produce a similar effect. The revelation of Explosion Release as a kekkei genkai. At first, considering that Deidara was also known for using Earth Release, I figured it had to be one of its components, and the only earth combination that made sense in creating explosions was lightning. After putting a bit more thought into it, fire and lightning seemed a more fitting combination to create explosions, so that resulted into some shifts in which combinations went where. The revelation of Magnet Release as a kekkei genkai also presented an equally suited candidate for the earth and lightning combination, with the added bonus of being higher in canon scale.
Nature Icon Metal A Metal (金属, Kinzoku) nature, yielding Metal Release (金遁, Kinton) ninjutsu. Metals are chemical elements which are good conductors of heat and electricity, highly lustrous, and dense. Metal Release would be a stronger counterpart to Steel Release. The revelation of Explosion Release as a kekkei genkai. Refer to Steel Release's debunking, as this was envisioned as a stronger Steel Release.
A Mineral (鉱物, Kōbutsu) nature, yielding Mineral Release (鉱遁, Kōton) ninjutsu. A mineral is that which is neither animal nor vegetation. It is naturally occurring, and it presents specific properties. Mineral Release would be a stronger counterpart to Steel Release. The revelation of Explosion Release as a kekkei genkai. Refer to Steel Release's debunking, as this was envisioned as a stronger Steel Release.
Smoke Nature Icon A Smoke (煙, Kemuri) nature, allowing Smoke Release (煙遁, Enton) ninjutsu. Smoke is the airborne product of combustion. When a flame is fanned, it burns faster, consuming more fuel, generating more smoke. The revelation of Scorch Release as a kekkei genkai, which is most likely composed of Fire Release and Wind Release. I have since managed to salvage Smoke Release as a triple combination theory.
An Ash (灰, Hai) nature, allowing Ash Release (灰遁, Haiton). It shows some consistency with Asuma's Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning. Ash Release would be an alternative to Smoke Release. The revelation of Scorch Release as a kekkei genkai, which is most likely composed of Fire Release and Wind Release. Refer to Smoke Release's debunking, as this was envisioned as a Smoke Release alternative.
Nature Icon Miasma A Miasma (瘴気, Shōki) nature, yielding Miasma Release (瘴遁, Shōton) ninjutsu. Before the germ theory of disease, ailments were though to be transmitted through "miasma", a toxic gas or a bad air in general. Miasma Release would be a stronger counterpart to Smoke Release. The revelation of Scorch Release as a kekkei genkai, which is most likely composed of Fire Release and Wind Release. Refer to Smoke Release's debunking, as this was envisioned as a stronger Smoke Release. I have since managed to salvage Miasma Release as a triple combination theory.
Nature Icon Gas A Gas (気体, Kitai) nature, yielding Gas Release (気遁, Kiton) ninjutsu. Physically speaking, a substance in its gaseous state can't be condensed through isothermal compression, because it is beyond its critical temperature. Gas Release would be a stronger counterpart to Smoke Release. The revelation of Scorch Release as a kekkei genkai, which is most likely composed of Fire Release and Wind Release. Refer to Smoke Release's debunking, as this was envisioned as a stronger Smoke Release. I have since managed to salvage Gas Release as a triple combination theory.
Nature Icon Fume A Fume (煙霧, Enmu) nature, yielding Fume Release (霧遁, Muton) ninjutsu. Fumes are gases and smokes that are dangerous to inhale. Fume Release would be a stronger counterpart to Smoke Release. The revelation of Scorch Release as a kekkei genkai, which is most likely composed of Fire Release and Wind Release. Refer to Smoke Release's debunking, as this was envisioned as a stronger Smoke Release.
A Heat (熱, Netsu) nature, yielding Heat Release (熱遁, Netton) ninjutsu. Fire gives off heat. Heat Release would be an alternative to Blaze Release as a stronger counterpart to Fire Release. The revelation of Scorch Release as a kekkei genkai, which is most likely composed of Fire Release and Wind Release. The effects of Scorch Release are pretty much the same as the ones I expected for a theoretical Heat Release.
Dust Release being a combination of Earth Release and Wind Release. The revelation of the concept of Kekkei Tōta, Dust Release being the only known example, being composed by three different elements: Earth Release, Wind Release and Fire Release.
Nature Icon Brightness A Bright (明, Akari) nature, yielding Bright Release (明遁, Meiton) ninjutsu. Brightness is the quality of that which is radiant, luminous and dazzling. It is also used to describe clarity of mind and wisdom. It would be a stronger counterpart to a possible Light Release nature. The rearrangement of nature combinations brought on by the confirmation of Magnet Release as a nature resulted in Light Release becoming a Yin Yang combination, it would fall on the "three tier" structure I deem too speculative to actually exist.
Nature Icon Lustre A Lustre (輝, Kagayaku) nature, yielding Lustre Release (輝遁, Kiton) ninjutsu. Lustre is the same as shine, brightness, brilliance. Light shines and lustres.
A Laser (レーザー, Rēzā) nature, yielding Laser Release (レーザー遁, Rēzāton) ninjutsu. A laser is a coherent beam of light.
Nature Icon Meteorite A Meteorite (隕石, Inseki) nature, yielding Meteorite Release (隕遁, Inton) ninjutsu. A meteorite is a piece of rock which comes from outer-space, which survives both the entry into the atmosphere and the impact on the surface of the planet. Upon entering the atmosphere, it becomes very hot and incandescent, becoming a meteor, also known as a shooting or falling star. Meteorite Release would be a combination of the Fire, Earth, and Yang natures. Madara's use of a technique involving meteorites, stemming from the Rinnegan, which doesn't allow for advanced nature techniques.
