Truth-Seeking Balls are spheres of black, malleable chakra that are comprised of at least four different nature transformations, as well as natural energy, and with complete mastery are capable of negating ninjutsu.

Usage

These orbs of black chakra are highly versatile and can be used for offensive, defensive and supplementary purposes. The user can apply shape transformation to the balls to alter them into various weapons, either by having the balls pierce through holes in their hands, or by simply grabbing them. The balls can also wrap around the user to act as a defensive shield, or be launched to serve as high speed projectiles. They are also capable of causing massive explosions by rapidly expanding their size, a lethal attack which can also damage the user's own body.

According to Hiruzen Sarutobi during his analysis of this ability, the technique acts on a similar basis to Dust Release, but on a greater level in terms of shape transformation, allowing it to be constantly used for either offensive or defensive purposes. Hiruzen also noted that the substance is beyond both kekkei genkai and kekkei tōta. When Obito took control of the Ten-Tails' power, Tobirama Senju stated that this technique could include the Yin–Yang Release, which allows it to nullify all ninjutsu. He continued to state that if the technique were to strike a reincarnated individual, the damage they receive would not recover and they could die as it neutralises their immortality. However, to nullify all ninjutsu, the user must have a certain amount of focus, as shown when Obito attacked Tobirama and Hiruzen before he gained control of the Ten-Tails they were able to regenerate. Obito could also use them as a substitute for chakra receivers, shooting them in six directions for his Six Red Yang Formation, and create the Sword of Nunoboko.

The black substance is highly durable, taking the most powerful of blows. Only Might Guy in the Eight Gates Released Formation and Naruto Uzumaki in his senjutsu-enhanced Tailed Beast Mode, hitting it with their Evening Elephant and a senjutsu-enhanced Tailed Beast Ball respectively, could destroy the shield-like chakra.

Drawbacks

According to Hiruzen, there is a limit to the duration of shape transformations that can be performed. According to Minato Namikaze, the user can only control the chakra within 70 metres of their location. He also noted that the chakra simply exists, and can't be deactivated. After seeing the effects of Gamakichi's natural energy-imbued technique on Obito, Naruto and Tobirama discovered that the chakra weapons were incapable of negating senjutsu. It was also shown that when the chakra weapons came in direct contact with natural energy-based techniques, their form becomes disrupted. When the user performs the Shadow Clone Technique, their clones will not have their own Truth-Seeking Balls.

Trivia

• When jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails gain control over the beast, the shakujō variant seems to instinctively form in their hand. Obito and Madara each wielded one half of Hagoromo's complete shakujō.
