Obito Uchiha (うちはオビト, Uchiha Obito) was a chūnin of Konohagakure who was believed to have died during the Third Shinobi World War, but in truth survived with the help of Madara Uchiha. Distraught by the death of the girl he loved, he became a missing-nin and dedicated his life to ending world conflict, using Madara's identity as well the alias Tobi (トビ, Tobi). For years, Obito manipulated Akatsuki from the shadows to further his ambitions before eventually going public with his agenda and starting the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Obito grew up not knowing who his parents were, a sad upbringing which led him to dream of one day becoming the Hokage so that the people of the village would acknowledge his existence. Obito arrived late for his enrollment in the Academy, but was relieved when Rin Nohara handed him his orientation-documents. He eventually graduated at the age of 9 and was placed in Team Minato with Rin and Kakashi Hatake under the leadership of Minato Namikaze. For their final test to become genin, Minato tasked his potential students with taking one of two bells from him in combat. After failing to take a bell on his own and seeing that Minato's skill was well above their own, Obito agreed to work with his team to get the bells. Ultimately, Minato passed all three of them as they succeeded in the real test: showing team-work.
The team later took part in the Chūnin Exams, during which Obito arrived late for the second test in the Forest of Death, having stopped to help an elderly woman. When Team Minato ran across an enemy team, Obito attempted to impress Rin with the Uchiha clan's fire technique, but ended up choking on the candy the elderly woman had given him and was soon defeated by Might Guy. He trained extensively between the second and third exams and told Rin his dream of becoming Hokage; however, he was eliminated in another bout with Guy, who was then beaten by Kakashi, allowing him to rise to the rank of chūnin. Obito did attain the rank some years later at the age of 11.
During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi was placed in charge of the team for a mission to destroy the Kannabi Bridge, which would hinder Iwagakure from using Kusagakure as a relief point. Before beginning the mission, Minato and Rin gave gifts to Kakashi to celebrate his promotion to jōnin, though Obito had forgotten, thus straining an already poor relationship. Minato would soon be called to the front lines, leaving the team to carry on the mission alone. The three were then discovered by Iwa-nin and Rin was captured. Kakashi elected to abandon Rin, believing it was more important to finish the mission before concerning themselves with her safety. Obito became enraged at the idea and insisted that they focus on her rescue. When Kakashi refused, Obito left on his own, remarking that Kakashi was worse than trash for abandoning his friends.
Obito located the cave the Iwa-nin were using as a hideout, but before he could make much progress, he was found and attacked by a camouflaged Taiseki. Having a change of heart because of Obito's parting words, Kakashi arrived and saved Obito, shielding him from Taiseki's attack and losing his left eye in the process. To save his team-mate, Obito awakened his Sharingan for the first time, allowing him to see through Taiseki's camouflage and kill him. The two found and released Rin from her restraints, prompting Kakkō to bring the cave down around them. As they made their escape, Kakashi's limited vision greatly hindered him, and when Obito noticed he was about to be crushed by a falling boulder in his blind spot, he pushed him out of the way and became trapped under the rubble in his place, crushing the right half of his body.
With no way to escape, Obito accepted his fate and made an offering: to give Kakashi his left Sharingan as an apology for forgetting to get him a present earlier. Rin performed the transplant and once the procedure was finished, Kakashi used his new Sharingan to kill Kakkō. The Iwa reinforcements quickly began to further compress the rubble, forcing Kakashi and Rin to leave Obito behind. As the rocks tightened around him, Obito lamented that he had finally became friends with Kakashi and was unable to confess his feelings to Rin. Minato rescued Kakashi and Rin, and Obito was believed dead, his name marked on Konoha's memorial.
In actuality, Obito was rescued by an elderly Madara Uchiha, who found the younger Uchiha when the cave-in brought him to one of the tunnels leading to Mountains' Graveyard. Though his Sharingan was miraculously unharmed, the entire right side of his body from the neck down was completely destroyed, prompting Madara to reconstruct his body using Hashirama's artificial body, while secretly placing a cursed seal on Obito's heart to restrict certain actions, such as committing suicide. Telling Obito that he now owed him his life, Obito instead declared that he wanted to return to Konoha and be with his friends. Madara informed him that his new body would prevent him from becoming a shinobi again, and that in the end it wouldn't matter. Madara preached about the harsh nature of reality and how he had a plan to change the world. Still unconvinced, but otherwise unable to leave, Obito remained beneath Mountains' Graveyard to recuperate. While undergoing rehabilitation to use his new limbs, he met and befriended White Zetsu and another spiral-faced Zetsu he called Guruguru.
As Obito was finally getting used to his new limbs, White Zetsu alerted him to the fact that Kakashi and Rin were surrounded by Kirigakure-nin and in danger. Obito tried to punch through the boulder blocking the exit, but destroyed his right arm in the process. Guruguru then encased Obito with his body and used the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path's power to destroy the boulder. As Obito prepared to leave, he told Madara he had no intention of returning, but thanked him for saving his life. Madara in turn told him that he would return willingly and thank him truthfully. Using Guruguru to locate his friends, he learned that Minato was once again absent. On his way, Obito's left eye socket caught a glimpse of what his left eye was actually seeing, but dismissed it as a panic thought. Upon reaching the battlefield, he was shocked to see Kakashi had impaled Rin through the heart with his Chidori. As Rin died before both of them, their Sharingan matured into Mangekyō Sharingan and Kakashi passed out quickly afterwards. Enraged at Rin's death, Obito responded by using a combination of his newly-awakened Kamui and Wood Release abilities to slaughter all of the Kiri-nin. Ignoring Kakashi completely, Obito cradled Rin's lifeless body and, with Madara's words still echoing in his mind, vowed that he would create a world where they could be together again.
Moving the Plan Forward
With new conviction, Obito returned to Mountains' Graveyard and agreed with Madara's conclusion that the reality they lived in was worthless and should be destroyed. He vowed he would create a new reality where he, Rin, and Kakashi would be together again. Pleased, Madara told Obito the details of the Eye of the Moon Plan, the secrets of the Demonic Statue and the role Nagato would play with his Rinnegan. He would go on to teach Obito much of his skills and knowledge, including Uchiha kinjutsu, Yin–Yang Release and the Six Paths Technique. Before passing, Madara seemingly created Black Zetsu by pouring his will into White Zetsu and also left part of his will in the chakra receivers extending from the Demonic Statue's navel. Disconnecting himself from the statue, Madara told Obito that until the day he was revived, Obito would be Madara Uchiha and must work to bring the Eye of the Moon Plan to completion.
Obito and Zetsu travelled to Amegakure to meet the Ame orphans, who were sceptical of Obito's claim that he was Madara and his plan to make a world where everyone wins, despite Nagato wanting to know about his powers. Yahiko brushed Obito off and told him to stay away from them. Obito, however, stated that he would return to that spot everyday until they understood and came to him willingly. Obito claims to have convinced Yahiko to form Akatsuki, unbeknownst to Konan. In the anime, Obito watched from the sidelines as Akatsuki performed peace keeping operations. When Danzō Shimura decided to frame Akatsuki for the death of several Ame-nin, making Hanzō see them as a threat to his regime, Obito saw this as the perfect opportunity to win over Nagato. As the other members of Akatsuki learned of the Konoha Anbu's intentions, they rushed to their leader's aid, only to be intercepted and killed by Obito and a number of White Zetsu. Obito and Zetsu then watched as Hanzō completed his plan to kill Yahiko, with his death mirroring Rin's, which prompted Obito to vow that he would one day have the Ame Orphans reunite with each other in the dream world. Following Yahiko's death, Nagato took on the name of Pain and joined Obito along with Konan, thus beginning a new incarnation of Akatsuki.
From this point, Obito's actions are largely unknown. As Tsunade speculated years later, the reason Obito adopted Madara's name was to take advantage of the power it invoked in peoples' fears of the legend himself. Because of the many infamous acts Madara carried out during his lifetime, few were surprised that Madara could still be alive after such a long time. They took the crimes that Obito committed under Madara's name as further confirmation that was really Madara, as only Madara would be capable of such deeds. Obito also possesses knowledge of things that only the real Madara would know, giving his claims further credence.
Twelve years before the start of the series, having infiltrated Konoha, Obito learned that Kushina Uzumaki, the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki and Minato's wife, would be giving birth, which he knew would cause the seal keeping the Nine-Tails contained within her to weaken. Intending to control the Nine-Tails, Obito tracked her down and took the newborn Naruto Uzumaki hostage to keep Minato from interfering. Once he extracted the beast, Obito placed it under his control and ordered it to destroy Konoha. Using Kamui to keep Minato from going to the village's defence, while keeping his true identity hidden and reaffirming his ambitions, Obito engaged Minato before being hit by a Rasengan and branded with Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique, which Obito didn't know would never disappear. Wounded, with Minato's Contract Seal disrupting his control over the Nine-Tails, Obito fled while vowing to regain the tailed beast, and declared that he still had other plans.
Eight years after the Nine-Tails' attack, after the Uchiha clan had been ostracised and placed under heavy suspicion for the Nine-Tails' attack, Obito infiltrated Konoha to rekindle the flames of war. He was found by Itachi Uchiha first, who convinced the man he believed to be Madara to spare the village in exchange for helping him wipe out the Uchiha clan, an offer which Obito accepted. Obito then offered Itachi a place in Akatsuki, despite knowing his true intentions. Shortly after the massacre was carried out, Obito used Kamui to warp away several Uchiha corpses in order to extract their Sharingan for his own use. Obito also met Danzō, albeit unknowningly, during the time of the massacre. At some point in time, Obito took control of the Fourth Mizukage, in effect making him the "real" Mizukage. Kisame Hoshigaki was one of the few Kirigakure ninja to know of his manipulation of the Fourth, yet helped Obito in his quest to bring about an end to the "world of lies". At some point, Obito learned the true reasons behind Kakashi killing Rin, though he was unaware that Madara had orchestrated the event to manipulate his emotions. Obito later took on the alias of Tobi in order to join Akatsuki as Zetsu's subordinate. To prevent suspicion that he was the true leader of Akatsuki, Obito took on the persona of an incompetent and clumsy individual.
In his youth, Obito was constantly late, which, more often than not, was due to the good deeds he had stopped to do, such as aiding the elderly, even making it a point in his life to do so. He once noted he knew all the elderly people in Konoha. Obito was easily moved to tears, which he always insisted was because he had gotten something in his eyes despite wearing goggles. Because Obito grew up alone and without parents, he sought to be acknowledged by everyone and as a result, dreamed of being Hokage and saving the world. Obito was in love with Rin, who was his only peer that supported this dream, despite realising her feelings were towards Kakashi instead. From this, Obito began to envy Kakashi's prodigious skills and constantly sought to surpass him. Ultimately, Obito would never get the chance to reveal his feelings to Rin before his supposed death. As Kakashi noted, Obito shared many qualities with Naruto; including a one-sided rivalry with his genius peer and one-sided feelings for his female peer. He also held the same desires as Naruto to become a Hokage that would never abandon his comrades. Obito was kind from the bottom of his heart and had strong feelings for his comrades, the Hokage, and the shinobi; qualities that made him ideal for corruption, according to Madara. In the end, upon witnessing Rin's death, Obito's determination and idealism were shattered and his Will of Fire almost completely extinguished.
Since joining Madara's side and being conditioned by him to continue his work, Obito became extremely focused, collected, and serious. From his former loyalty and ideologies came great bitterness as he had succumbed to his clan's Curse of Hatred with the entire world itself as the object of his loathing and the shinobi system that led to Rin's senseless death being what made him lose hope in it. Declaring that he no longer cared for his well-being and that nothing in this world mattered besides the Eye of the Moon Plan, Obito would pursue his goal with no regard for the personal cost of others. This lack of empathy extended to those once close to him, who he would attack without hesitation, believing that he could recreate anything he eliminated in the dream world he planned to create with the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Stating that he would be going above and beyond of what his original goal of being Hokage would entail, Obito tried to convince himself and even his enemies that only his newest path would materialise peace. Despite his claims to the contrary, Obito's love for his former comrades, and Rin in particular, remained, with feelings that proved strong enough to regain his consciousness and assume control of the Ten-Tails. In the anime, despite his indifference to the world, Obito is shown somewhat sympathetic in witnessing others' loss of loved ones, such as silently promising to Nagato and Konan that they would reunite with Yahiko in the dream world without fail.
While frequently arrogant and disrespectful of those he considered weak, Obito was not above giving praise to others. His own disdain for his former dreams and belittlement of the morals of his opponents was extended towards his former compatriots, berating Kakashi for opening his mouth so easily, and Might Guy for constantly forgetting faces. While Obito's words were often painfully striking, they often held much truth, with the ability to severely shake down even Naruto's determination after Neji Hyūga's death. In this regard, Madara noted that Obito had become like his own past self. Obito had also taken up an aggressive and sadistic disposition, taking the newborn Naruto hostage to release Kurama from his mother, and openly mocking those he put in dire situations.
Obito was a master manipulator, either by subtly corrupting his targets' own goals, omitting parts of stories or events to his own benefit as he did with Sasuke, or by appearing to share their beliefs. As Madara taught him, Obito took advantage of the darkness within his targets' hearts to control them, best seen in the existence of Akatsuki with its wildly differing members working together because they believed the organisation furthered their own ends, while in actuality, they served as mere tools to further Obito's agenda. Obito's loyalty extended to no one but himself, even going as far as betraying Madara, claiming that he never considered him an ally. He was capable of great patience in attaining his goals; however, upon nearing the completion of his ultimate ambition, he began to discard caution and proceed in a more aggressive and decisive manner, even insisting that the Infinite Tsukuyomi be commenced immediately. Single-minded in the pursuit of his goals, he was even willing to take enormous risks to himself in order to further his plans.
When first introduced as "Tobi", Obito exaggerated his former personality to ridiculous extremes, acting the role of the happy-go-lucky idiot who annoyed most members of Akatsuki, although Kisame appreciated Tobi's ability to brighten up a gloomy organisation such as theirs. In the anime, Obito was shown keeping up this charade even when no one was around. Eventually, Obito discarded his role as a fool and took a more direct role in his plans. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Obito acquired somewhat of a fixation with Naruto, who reminds him of himself in his youth. Because of the similarities between Naruto and his child self, Obito expressed great anger toward Naruto for continuing to follow the same ideology that he once possessed, considering him incredibly naive and childish to still believe in such principles.
Kakashi later deduced the reason for this and his actions, noting that Obito's Will of Fire had never actually burned out and his denial of it was causing him inner turmoil that was tearing him up inside. During his clash with Naruto and Sasuke, Obito briefly envisioned the way his life might have turned out if he had returned to Konoha when Rin died and rejoined his comrades, even going so far as to imagine himself as Hokage, despite not consciously understanding why. Upon seeing such visions again, Obito began to conclude that he was subconsciously regretting his actions affiliated with the Eye of the Moon Plan. While consciously convincing himself to have no regrets so long as he can bring the plan to fruition, Naruto's actions ultimately succeeded in changing Obito's mindset, allowing him to overcome his Curse of Hatred.
With the mask of lies finally lifted, Obito understood why Naruto was succeeding while he himself had failed. As a result, Obito openly expressed regret for what he did and even chose to redeem himself in some small way by attempting to follow Nagato in offering his own life to revive all the people he and Madara killed during the war, solemnly expressing that he was unworthy of seeing Rin in the afterlife. While his efforts failed, Obito openly chose to defy Madara, his rescuer and teacher, proving that Obito had returned to his former self. With the world still in great peril, Obito finally took Naruto's words on what it means to be a Hokage to heart and declared that he would stand before his comrades even if it cost his own life for their sake, showing deep concern for them throughout various instances in their battle against Kaguya.
As a child, Obito had short, spiky, black hair and black eyes. He wore a long sleeved blue uniform with metal plating on the part that reached the back of his hands, as well as a blue jacket with an orange collar and trimmings. The jacket was fastened to the rest of the outfit by two buttons on the collar, and had the Uchiha clan crest at the back. He also wore a white belt, shinobi sandals, the standard Konoha dark blue forehead protector, and a pair of goggles with orange lenses connected to ear protectors. During the battle of Kannabi Bridge, Obito gave his left eye to Kakashi as a parting gift. After he was retrieved from Kusagakure, Madara replaced his destroyed right side with Hashirama's artificial body, though the right side of his face remained heavily scarred in a manner similar to deeply-aged wrinkles. During his rehabilitation, Obito grew his hair out, with the shape similar to that of Madara's. By the time of the Nine-Tails' attack, he cut his hair back to a shorter length and wore a long hooded black cloak and a yellow-orange mask with a pattern that resembled his facial scar. During his first meetings with Itachi and Kisame, Obito was seen with Madara's hairstyle, and wore a mask with a black flame pattern when meeting the former. While controlling Kirigakure and meeting Kisame, he wore a dark blue kimono and had much of his body, save his right arm and hand, wrapped in gauze.
As Tobi, Obito wore an orange mask with spiral pattern that focused on his right eye, reminiscent of when Guruguru encased him. Under his Akatsuki cloak, he wore a black long-sleeve top that also covered his neck and chin, a pair of black gloves, and a pair of dark-coloured pants along with standard sandals and white stirrups. On his waist, he wore a thick black belt with armour-like metal plates attached to it; he had the same metal plates on his shoulders and wore a green scarf prior to becoming Deidara's partner. Obito had blue (black in the manga) nail polish on his fingers and toes, and wore Sasori's purple ring, which bears the kanji for "jewel" or "sphere" (玉, gyoku), on his left thumb.
After his previous mask was destroyed by Konan and implanted Madara's left Rinnegan, Obito began wearing a new mask, which was white with a purple tint and covered the entire upper half of his head. The mask's design resembled a combination of the Sharingan and Rinnegan, consisting of a ripple pattern with three tomoe around the centre, two of which acted as the mask's eye-holes. He noted to Naruto that this new mask had been specifically designed for combat, making it very durable. He also dons an outfit similar to the Uchiha clan's traditional clothing during the Warring States Period. This attire includes a pair of black pants and gloves, with a white, presumed form-fitting shirt (black in the anime prior to episode 325) underneath. Over this he wears a purple, high-collared, long sleeve mantle that splits down the lower half and has the Uchiha crest on the back. Around his waist he wears a simple, light-purple obi and a belt. Strapped to his back, he carried Madara's gunbai, now purple with black trimmings and black tomoe, connected to a black chain that ran up his right sleeve. During his first meeting with Madara after his reincarnation, he detached the gunbai from the chain and returned it to Madara.
In the process of sealing the Ten-Tails into himself, Obito's hair became entirely white. Immediately after becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Obito's body underwent a drastic transformation: his skin turning white, ten protrusions emerging from his back – five near his shoulders and five near his hips – as well as a black assortment of ten magatama markings appearing on his back; one large one, with a black Rinnegan-like pattern within it, and nine smaller ones arranged in rows of three below it. In addition, the entire right half of his body gained a scale-like pattern across it, replacing the scars he acquired as a child. When Obito managed to gain control of the Ten-Tails, he underwent another transformation. In this new form, the ten protrusions on his back formed the collar and coattails of a haori, two horns sprouted from his forehead – the left smaller than the right – and six magatama markings appeared across his chest. After the tailed beasts were removed from him, Obito returned to his original appearance, save for retaining white hair. Later, when Black Zetsu briefly took full control of Obito, Madara reclaimed his left Rinnegan and returned to him the original left eye he gave to Kakashi.
While a member of the Uchiha clan who became a chūnin at the age of 11, Obito's overall prowess as a shinobi was average at best, constantly behind his other classmates. In spite of this relatively slow development in his younger years, Obito's talent began to surface after awakening his Sharingan, with Guruguru later noting Obito's potential as the reason why Madara had chosen him as his disciple. As an adult, trained by Madara, Obito became an extremely powerful shinobi with his abilities being a near-mirror image of Madara's own, enabling him to deceive many high-level shinobi into believing he was Madara. Obito has been able to hold his own against multiple Kage-level and S-rank shinobi as well as perfect jinchūriki on numerous occasions.
As a child, Obito was fairly skilled with taijutsu, though not at the same level as Kakashi or Might Guy. After his rehabilitation with Madara, he showed noticeable improvement, able to subdue multiple Kirigakure Anbu. In his adulthood, he was able to go up against Kakashi, a taijutsu expert. He mostly achieves these feats by using taijutsu in tandem with his Sharingan and space-time technique to allow opponents to pass through him and then quickly counter using the elements of surprise and confusion.
With his artificial body, Obito's physical strength was increased significantly. With his artificial right arm, he was able to crack a massive boulder, lift Konan by her throat, and stop a slash from Kubikiribōchō without being injured. Obito survived being impaled through the chest by Kakashi's lightning-infused kunai long enough to become the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. As a child, Obito showed noticeable reflexes and agility, able to quickly get rid of a trap sprung on his team. He also displayed speed against the Kirigakure ninja he fought, closing distances quickly and landing a series of swift blows and punches before any of them could react. As an adult, Obito's agility was great enough that he was able to keep up with Naruto in his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode.
As a recognised member of the Uchiha clan, Obito has been well-versed in Fire Release techniques, such as the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique, since childhood. In the anime, Obito displayed the ability to conceal shuriken in multiple small fireballs. As an adult, his Fire Release prowess developed greatly, with his techniques being of the same size and scale as Madara's. He can use Kamui's rotation to enhance the range of his Fire Release techniques.
Obito gained the ability to use Wood Release after acquiring artificial body mass created from Hashirama Senju's DNA. With this kekkei genkai, he could produce wood projectiles which multiplied inside the target's body, massive tangled roots to viciously crush his enemies, and smaller roots from one of his arms to restrain his opponents. In conjunction with Madara, Obito was able to control the Ten-Tails in its second form by connecting to it with Hashirama's DNA. Obito can also use the Wood Release's two component natures: earth and water. The former allows him to burrow and move underground to spread bombs across a battlefield, creating a literal minefield, and also to create and quickly move between various holes for sneak attacks.
As an adult, Obito has been seen wielding various weapons. During the Fourth Shinobi World War he began carrying Madara's gunbai, which he used in a similar fashion to a flail attached to a chain, and as a means of defending. In his first fight with Minato Namikaze, he used a long chain attached to braces on his wrists in conjunction with his intangibility, harmlessly passing through his opponent before solidifying to restrain him with the trailing chain. Around the time of the Uchiha Incident, Obito carried a sword at his waist, implying some skill in kenjutsu. He was able to use a pipe as a makeshift weapon to impale Konan and, in the anime, skilfully block a flurry of her Paper Shuriken. Obito is able to produce chakra receivers from his artificial right half, a number of which were fashioned into giant stakes and stored within Kamui's dimension.
Once becoming the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails and gaining complete control of the beast, Obito gained access to the Sword of Nunoboko, the very blade that Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki once wielded and is said to have shaped the world with. The blade is formed out of the Truth-Seeking Balls, and Obito claimed he could use it to lay waste to the world.
As an Uchiha, Obito is proficient in the use of shurikenjutsu, and stores a set of giant shuriken of varying sizes within Kamui's dimension. Using Kamui's spiraling distortion, he is able to launch them at a high rotational speed, which adds an element of surprise to his attack and gives the opponent minimal time to react accordingly. He also uses them as close-range melee weapons, for both stabbing and slashing. Obito also has a set of giant kunai, which he uses in an identical fashion in conjunction with his dōjutsu.
When Obito first awakened his Sharingan it already had two tomoe and he was able to take immediate advantage of it despite his inexperience. His eye gained three tomoe after witnessing Rin's death. As an adult, Obito seems to be able to keep his Sharingan active for extended periods of time with little drain on his chakra levels. He can use his Sharingan to place individuals under genjutsu from a single moment of eye-contact and then perform effects like forcing his victims to reveal information or incapacitating them. His proficiency with genjutsu is high enough to control the Fourth Mizukage and Isobu's jinchūriki, Yagura, for a long period of time; prowess Mei Terumī compared to Kotoamatsukami. He also battled Kakashi, another skilled Sharingan user, in a genjutsu duel to a standstill.
Like Madara, Obito can use his Sharingan to place tailed beasts under his control. Obito was able to summon Kurama after placing it under his control and used it to attack Konohagakure. While this control can be complete when used on a single target, when cast on several, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain, allowing the beasts to temporarily break free in certain instances. Obito can also perform a kinjutsu of the Uchiha clan, Izanagi, which allows the user manipulate events around them into an illusion at the cost of blinding the eye used. While this technique is normally used for a brief instant due to the short amount of time each eye can maintain it, Obito's control over Hashirama's DNA extended the length of his Izanagi, allowing him to maintain it for ten minutes using a single eye.
After giving up his original left eye to Kakashi, Obito obtained a new left Sharingan and has multiple placed in storage should he need them. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, after Black Zetsu gained complete control of Obito's body, Madara re-implanted Obito's true left eye into its original wielder. Shortly after dying at the hands of Kaguya, Obito's spirit manifested itself within Kakashi's subconscious, passing on the powers of both his Sharingan to Kakashi.
Obito awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan after witnessing Rin's death at the hands of Kakashi. As a matching pair originally belonging to Obito, the Uchiha's right eye has the same design as Kakashi's left; three stretched triangles evenly spaced around the pupil that each curve at the top around the eye to form a circle, making it similar to a pinwheel. Uniquely, Obito does not appear to suffer from deteriorating eyesight, strained physical health, or even exhaustion despite his extensive use of its power throughout the years. His teaching under Madara has given Obito extensive knowledge of the various Mangekyō techniques. He is also able to somehow disperse the flames of Amaterasu even if engulfed by them.
It is through this dōjutsu that he is able to perform his space–time ninjutsu, Kamui, which was noted by Minato Namikaze to be more versatile than his and Tobirama Senju's own. Kamui serves as a gateway to another dimensional space, which he can instantly send parts of his body or his entirety to and back from, granting Obito two distinct abilities: teleportation, and another best described as "intangibility". When going "intangible" by shifting parts of his being between dimensions, he can allow any matter in the original dimension to harmlessly pass right through him, granting Obito a very effective defense maneuver to escape damage or catch his opponents off-guard. This became such a key element in Obito's fighting style that he rarely resorts to more traditional forms of ninjutsu. He can also extend this intangibility to whatever he's touching at the time. The second ability of Obito's Kamui is to absorb targets into the other dimension through physical contact. By absorbing his own body, Obito is able to transport himself to practically any location he desires. The chakra signatures of those in the other dimension completely vanish while in it.
He can also use his Kamui to unleash various weapons from the technique's pocket dimension, using the warping distortion to greatly increase their launch speed and force. As versatile as Kamui is, it has some drawbacks. He can only make himself continuously intangible for about five minutes, and because these two abilities are connected to the same technique, Obito can only use one of them at a time; he must remain solid while transporting himself or other targets, leaving him susceptible to counter-attacks when he does so, and it takes longer to teleport himself than it does someone or something else. The only reliable counter to this technique is another person using Kamui against Obito, as objects and people warped away by Kamui are sent to the same dimension where they can then harm the parts of Obito that may exist there. However, at the same time, Obito is "immune" in a sense to others using this technique on him.
After regaining his true left eye, Obito gained access to Kamui's long-range variation, able to teleport any target within his line of sight. With it, Obito is shown able to warp small speeding targets easily. With both eyes being used on the same target, the teleporting process works twice as fast. He can also adapt Kamui's dimensional-shifting ability to work in sync with other space-time ninjutsu. Unlike the general use of Kamui, because Obito is accessing a dimension other than his own, it drains Obito of considerably more chakra, and noticeably places great strain on his eyes despite wielding both eyes. Once there, however, Obito is able to use Kamui as normal again, able to hide within Kamui's own dimension and return to the new dimension at will.
Obito retains the ability to use Kamui even following his death, and can even go as far as using it to temporarily return from the afterlife. During which, he transferred all his Mangekyō powers to Kakashi.
Following the loss of his left Sharingan due to his use of Izanagi, Obito implanted Madara's Rinnegan, taken from Nagato's corpse, into his left eye socket in preparation for the Fourth Shinobi World War. While only able to handle a single eye, with the Rinnegan, Obito gained a series of abilities, such as the potential to master all five forms of nature transformation and the ability to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
Also as a wielder of the Rinnegan, Obito could access the Six Paths Technique, a series of unique ninjutsu skills. He could use the Human Path technique to extract information from an individual, though the process would kill the target. He had also displayed extensive use of the Outer Path ability, which allowed him to manifest chakra chains and perform the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique at the cost of his own life. Obito stated that the binding power of his chains were greater than Nagato's Outer Path binding.
Obito made use of the Six Paths of Pain, which he created from six reincarnated jinchūriki. By embedding each with a single chakra receiver, he was able to manipulate them and temporarily bind their former tailed beasts' chakra to their bodies. Using the Demonic State's chakra chains, Obito could instantly drag the tailed beasts back into the statue as needed. Each jinchūriki also had the same eyes Obito himself — a right Sharingan and a left Rinnegan — allowing him to share their vision and coordinate their movements. This enhanced the jinchūriki's original abilities, allowing them to perform a series of collaborative and precise attacks. However, due to the immense chakra consumption required, he did not have them use the individual skills granted by the Six Paths Technique.
Obito ultimately lost the Rinnegan and all the abilities that came with it after it was reclaimed by Madara.
As an adult, Obito is an observant and sharp thinker, capable of reading through deception. He can formulate complicated plans well in advance and accurately predict how others will act in a given set of circumstances. Even on the rare occasions where Obito is caught off-guard he is capable of creating counter-strategies while maintaining a calm and composed demeanour. He is flexible when the situation calls for it, using alternate means to achieve his objective when his original plan fails. His mental endurance is also noteworthy, as he was able to break free from Ino's Mind Body Switch Technique within mere seconds, resist Madara's mental control, and even overpower the Ten-Tails' mind. Likewise, even while physically drained, he was able to overpower Black Zetsu's possession of his body to take control of it instead, preventing it from detaching.
Due to Madara's tutelage, Obito gained a vast knowledge of the ninja world, which allows him to almost immediately identify most forms of ninjutsu and counter them if necessary. His knowledge extends far enough back through history that he knows of the existence and secrets of the Sage of the Six Paths.
Obito, in his adulthood, is also shown as a master of manipulation and psychological warfare, being able to exploit an individual's beliefs and convictions into serving his purposes through direct or indirect manners, including skillfully lacing elements of truth in his lies, to deceive people as he did to Nagato, Kisame and Sasuke. He is a skilled actor, having been able to shift away all suspicion and attention with his happy-go-lucky persona of "Tobi", or use an extremely believable performance of Madara himself, even mimicking the legendary Uchiha's voice and speech patterns, to fool those who knew Madara personally like Ōnoki. He was able to fully assume the identity of Madara Uchiha to manipulate the entire shinobi world into a war due to their fear of the legendary Uchiha's abilities. When questioned about why he was going about things in such a roundabout manner, he claimed that the fight between "himself" and Hashirama had left him a shell of his former self. Obito has a great understanding of the politics and machinations of the shinobi world. According to Mifune, he was able to read the signs of the time and use the stability and suspicion between other countries to increase his own power. In battle, his efforts are geared into breaking an enemy both mentally and emotionally.
After being found by Madara, Obito had the right side of his body, which had been crushed by the boulder, artificially reconstructed using Hashirama's artificial body. This enabled him to replace dismembered limbs on several occasions. During his fight against Minato, after being hit with a Rasengan, his left hand almost split from his arm, while damage looked similar to how his artificial right arm behaves after being hit. Uniquely, Obito's artificial body oozes a white substance instead of blood. The presence of Hashirama's DNA in his body gave Obito access to the Wood Release kekkei genkai.
Due to his body being rebuilt by Hashirama's DNA, his physical strength and durability were greatly magnified. This artificial body also possesses noticeable regenerative capabilities, as Obito's arm and shoulder were able to recover from the damage caused by Naruto's Rasengan within minutes. Similarly, After becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Obito's regenerative power improved to the point that he was able to heal almost instantly from the damage caused by a wind-enhanced Kagutsuchi attack, as well as a senjutsu-empowered Rasengan, which had managed to bypass his defences. His artificial body parts also enable Obito to survive without the need for food or water, but he can still enjoy the sensation of eating as seen in the anime.
Due to these augmentations, Obito also gained an immense increase in vitality and chakra reserves, allowing him to achieve various chakra-consuming feats, including his constant use of his Mangekyō Sharingan, summoning large and powerful creatures such as Kurama and the Demonic Statue, as well as controlling five fully transformed jinchūriki at once.
Main article: Jinchūriki Forms
After Obito became the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Hashirama Senju and Hiruzen Sarutobi, two men known as the God of Shinobi, remarked gravely that Obito was more powerful than even them. With these powers, he was able to easily overwhelm four Kage-level opponents working in conjunction with each other without effort nor difficulty. Even Madara noted that at this point, his apprentice had become the same as the Sage of the Six Paths. Both Killer B and Gyūki stated that Obito was stronger than the Ten-Tails itself while in this form, due to its power being more focused in his human body. The transformaion healed all of Obito's previous wounds, and even the Flying Thunder God Technique's formula mark placed on his back vanished. However, as the new jinchūriki, Obito did not have complete control over the Ten-Tails, characterised by a loss of intelligence and his body becoming distorted and severely bloated at one point.
He gained a dramatic boost in strength and speed, able to destroy Hashirama's wood clone and the reincarnated Tobirama Senju in an instant, land a surprise attack on Minato, and demolish Susanoo's ribcage with nothing more than brute force. He could also react and contemptuously block Amaterasu despite the technique's sheer speed. Likewise, his durability also increased, having emerged unharmed from Tobirama's set of chain explosions. He could create chakra arms, capable of breaking even Hashirama's Sage Art: Gate of the Great God and a barrier erected by four Hokage.
In this form, Obito wielded Truth-Seeking Balls, which could be formed into shields, lances and spinning blades, or launched and briefly expand to a massive size to form powerful explosions. According to Hiruzen, these spheres are similar in nature to Dust Release, and are beyond both kekkei genkai and kekkei tōta. Obito also displayed the ability to levitate after becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.
Eventually, Obito managed to regain control over his mind and subsequently tame the power of the Ten-Tails, undergoing another transformation and creating additional Truth-Seeking Balls for a total of ten, one of which formed half of Hagoromo's shakujō. Using Yin-Yang Release, Obito could negate all ninjutsu the Truth-Seeking Balls touched, even halting the Impure World Reincarnation's regenerating process. However, the orbs are incapable of nullifying senjutsu, and despite his body's durability, Obito can be damaged by them expanding.
After a drawn out battle with Naruto and his allies, Obito demonstrated his own ability to utilise multiple Tailed Beast Balls by first forming a tree adorned with flowers similar to the one used by the Ten-Tails to focus the chakra of the ball. Later, as both Minato and Naruto continued to press him, Obito produced a construct of the Ten-Tails from his body, which then became a recreation of the Shinju, through which he attempted to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Obito later noticed that as the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, he was no longer able to utilise Kamui's "intagibility".
Obito is also versed in several unorthodox skills. He has displayed high-level surgical skills, able to remove, preserve, and transplant eyes into himself and others. He is also versed in barrier ninjutsu, using the Uchiha Flame Formation to protect the Demonic Statue and, as the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, the Six Red Yang Formation to prevent the Allied Shinobi Forces from escaping his Tailed Beast Balls. He also displayed the ability to perform a series of well-coordinated attacks in conjunction with Madara. Obito, while he was the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, could sense chakra, as he was able to predict how Sasuke was about to attack him with Amaterasu. He is also versed in fūinjutsu, with which he can extract a tailed beast from its jinchūriki, or seal the Ten-Tails within himself. Obito was able to absorb chakra from Madara, taking fragments of the One-Tail and Eight-Tails along with a small portion of his senjutsu chakra. This allowed him to manifest a Truth-Seeking Ball and shape it into a shakujō, despite no longer being the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.
These stats reflect Obito's abilities at the time of his "death":
Kazekage Rescue Arc
After the death of Sasori, Tobi and Zetsu collect Sasori's ring from his body, which Tobi believes will allow him to join the Akatsuki. Finding Deidara after he and Zetsu find the ninja's disembodied ring arm, Tobi's refusal to return the severed limb resulted in him being strangled by Deidara's legs.
Hidan and Kakuzu Arc
Tobi was seen with the other Akatsuki members to seal the Two-Tails from Yugito Nii, previously captured by Hidan and Kakuzu, to the Demonic Statue.
Main article: Three-Tails Arc
Soon after being accepted into the Akatsuki as Sasori's replacement, Tobi is made Deidara's new partner while being assigned to capture the Three-Tails. In the anime, they stopped to get a bite to eat at a dango shop during their search. Deidara anxiously waits for Tobi to remove his mask so that he could see what he looked like underneath, but Tobi turned away, hiding his face. When they finish eating they split up. Tobi eventually finds Konoha ninja using the Four-Corner Sealing Barrier and deduces that that the technique was to seal the Three-Tails. He informs Deidara of his discovery and they approach and kill the two Anbu put in charge of the sealing.
When they locate the Three-Tails, Tobi tries to convince Deidara to fight it in his place. While the Three-Tails chases Tobi, Deidara used one of his bombs on it while it was distracted. The rest of the battle goes unseen. After they defeated the Three-Tails, Tobi claims responsibility for the beast's capture, saying his technique was flawless and that it made sense to assign him to the mission. Deidara retorted that Tobi wouldn't have got far without his clay. Tobi fell asleep after making another cheeky comment, much to the anger of Deidara, who "woke him up" by detonating a clay bomb next to him.
When they get the Three-Tails to an Akatsuki base, the Akatsuki members convene and seal it. When they are done they also seal the Two-Tails (the Two-Tails is sealed before the Three-Tails' capture in the anime).
Itachi Pursuit Arc
When the Akatsuki later receives news that Sasuke Uchiha had defeated Orochimaru, Tobi follows a furious Deidara in his intent to kill Sasuke. When they track him down, Tobi greets Sasuke as a distraction while Deidara attacks with his bombs. Sasuke survives the blast and proceeds to run his sword straight through Tobi. After collapsing, Tobi stands up, unfazed yet complimenting Sasuke for the speed of his attack. Tobi provides support to Deidara for the battle's duration, but Sasuke keeps the advantage. Deidara ultimately resorts to using C0 in an effort to kill Sasuke at the loss of his own life. Though Zetsu reported Tobi's demise to the other Akatsuki members, prompting Pain to remark that he was easily replaceable, Tobi survived. Meeting Pain and Konan in Amegakure shortly afterwards, Tobi instructs the former to capture Naruto so they can extract the Nine-Tails from him.
Seeing a use in Sasuke as Itachi would die soon, Tobi uses his childish facade to hinder the Konoha ninja sent to find either brother. When Zetsu then arrived to inform him that Sasuke had killed Itachi, having expected that outcome, Tobi gets to Sasuke before the Konoha ninja, taking him away. Tobi tended to Sasuke's wounds and, when he woke up, offered to tell him about Itachi. Tobi tried to befriend Sasuke by removing his mask and revealing his Sharingan, something that triggered Itachi's Amaterasu in Sasuke's left eye against Tobi. Tobi retreats into the darkness while he puts out the flames, returning with his mask back on to muse about how Itachi never ceased to amaze him. After Sasuke asked what he was talking about, Tobi revealed that Itachi had most likely set it up so that the sight of his Sharingan would trigger the Amaterasu he had sealed within Sasuke. After Sasuke complained that he was making no sense, Tobi revealed that it was to protect him, and, when Sasuke still didn't believe him, Tobi introduced himself as Madara Uchiha. He proceeds to reveal to Sasuke the Uchiha clan's history, Itachi's secret life, and the true reason for the Uchiha Clan Massacre; however, he lied about his involvement with the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's attack, saying instead that it was a random natural attack. Sasuke, regretting that he had killed Itachi now that he knew the truth, resolved to destroy Konoha for forcing Itachi into the life he had lived.
Tsuchigumo Kinjutsu Arc
Invasion of Pain Arc
Tobi convinced Sasuke and the other members of Taka to start working with Akatsuki, the two groups having Konoha's destruction as a mutual goal. Before they could do that, however, he stated that Akatsuki needed the two remaining tailed beasts. Since Pain was still working on capturing Naruto, Tobi sent Taka to capture the Eight-Tails. After Taka left, Tobi spoke with Zetsu, discussing Akatsuki's actions up to that point. He went on to say that, although they had lost five talented ninja in Akatsuki, all of their efforts had brought him closer to "making Sasuke his".
After Taka captured the Eight-Tails' jinchūriki, Killer B, Sasuke gave him to Tobi for Akatsuki to seal. During the extraction process, it was revealed to be a fake: a severed tentacle made to look like Killer B. Tobi remains silent while Kisame - recently made aware of Tobi's identity as the previous Mizukage - commented that Sasuke had been fooled in his attempt to capture the jinchūriki. The tentacle does not go to waste as Tobi seals the tentacle, a fragment of the Eight-Tails' chakra, into the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
Five Kage Summit Arc
Irritated upon learning of Nagato's failure to capture Naruto and wasting the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique on the Konoha villagers he killed, Tobi sent Kisame to capture Killer B while he catches up to Taka while they were half-way to Konoha. Telling them that Konoha is already in ruins, Tobi convinces Sasuke to follow Zetsu to the Kage Summit in the Land of Iron to kill Danzō, the acting Hokage and a conspirator in the Uchiha's assassination. However, intending to have Sasuke take the Kage hostage for him to facilitate his plans, Tobi instructs Zetsu to expose Taka's presence to the Kage.
Finding Naruto also in the Land of Iron, Tobi decides to personally confront the youth to figure out how he caused Nagato to have a change of heart, but was caught by Kakashi Hatake and Yamato. Rather than fight, Tobi told them about the Sage of the Six Paths, the truth of the Uchiha clan, and Sasuke's descent into darkness because of him. They doubt the validity of what he told them, but he persevered while proclaiming that Naruto and Sasuke are destined to fight someday before disappearing.
As Sasuke was about to be killed by the Kage, Tobi rescued him. He sends Sasuke away, sending Karin with him to heal his injuries. Though disappointed that Sasuke was not more of a match for the Kage, Tobi was nevertheless happy by the development of Sasuke's Mangekyō Sharingan in awakening Susanoo. He then explained his Eye of the Moon Plan to the Kage and those in attendance, concluding by asking for their support by giving him Killer B and Naruto. The Kage refused, so he declared war on them all before disappearing.
Tobi intercepted Danzō while he was fleeing the Summit, fighting his bodyguards Fū and Torune. Although forced to remove his arm because of Torune's nano-sized, venomous insects, Tobi was easily able to dispose of the two before teleporting Sasuke and Karin to their location so he can honour his promise to the former. Tobi observed the battle and was glad when Sasuke is finally able to fully develop Susanoo. When Sasuke emerges victorious, Tobi approaches the dying Danzō to take Shisui's eye, which was implanted in Danzō's right eye-socket. Danzō activated the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique in an attempt to take Tobi and Sasuke with him, but they are able to get out of range in time. Tobi collects Danzō's body and suggests that Sasuke take some time to rest.
At his lab, Tobi discovers that Danzō destroyed Shisui's Sharingan before he died. Cursing him, Tobi gets a new arm and makes plans to retrieve Nagato's Rinnegan to prepare for war. Before he can leave, Zetsu informs him of Sasuke's fight with his former team-mates. Arriving after Sasuke clashed with Naruto, Tobi advises that Sasuke come with him to as they can deal with Naruto another time. Once back at the Mountains' Graveyard, at the youth's insistence, Tobi implants Itachi's eyes into Sasuke before leaving him to recuperate.
Confining the Jinchūriki Arc
Tobi is soon afterwards confronted by Kabuto, who arrived after mastering his new powers. Remembering that Kabuto was once an Akatsuki spy, Tobi tries to kill him for betraying the organisation. Kabuto responds by using the Summoning: Impure World Resurrection to revive five deceased members of Akatsuki (Sasori, Deidara, Itachi, Nagato, and Kakuzu), a demonstration of the sort of "pawns" he can offer Tobi in the approaching Fourth Shinobi World War. In exchange, Kabuto wants Sasuke. When Tobi asked what would happen if he refused, Kabuto responds by summoning a sixth coffin containing Madara Uchiha. Horrified that Kabuto knows that Madara is actually dead, Tobi is forced to accept an alliance, but sets the condition that Sasuke will not be turned over until after the war. Kabuto agrees and sends the summons away. Still uneasy about the revived Madara, Tobi escorts Kabuto into his hideout so he can assess his battle strength and reformulate his plans for war.
Tobi later infiltrates Amegakure to acquire Nagato's corpse before he immediately confronted by Konan. Tobi tries to buy back her cooperation by informing her of his involvement in Yahiko's creation of Akatsuki and Nagato's receiving the Rinnegan, but she doesn't believe him. Konan turns into paper and engulfs Tobi, hoping to use the exploding tags mingled with her paper in order to sacrifice herself to kill him. However, realising her intent, Tobi is able to warp the explosion away - saving both of their lives at the cost of his right arm with the upper part of his mask is broken.
After Konan answers his question while she and Nagato placed their faith in Naruto, Tobi finds himself surrounded by six hundred billion paper explosives. Konan than detonates them all over a period of ten minutes, longer than the five-minute period that Tobi can remain intangible for.
However, to escape the death trap Konan laid out for him, Tobi sacrifices his left Sharingan to use Izanagi and survive the attack while losing the upper left side of his mask in the process. Taking advantage of Konan lowering her guard and thinking she succeeded, Tobi uses a pipe to impale her from behind. Konan attempts a final defensive strike, proclaiming that Naruto will lead them to peace, but Tobi grabs her by the neck as he retorts that he will embrace being the "darkness" that crushes Naruto's "light". He places her under a genjutsu to force her to reveal Nagato's location and adds that she will die when the illusion ends. When Tobi finds Nagato's body, interpreting the corpse's smile as his continued betrayal, he closes the eyes before teleporting the body away to the other dimension.
Once back at his hideout, Tobi replaces his blinded Sharingan with one of Nagato's Rinnegan while getting a new arm, a new outfit, and a new mask. Kabuto complimented him on his efforts to gain new eyes, but Tobi rebuffed the statement, claiming that they were his to begin with. When they receive intel from Kisame about the current location of the jinchūriki, Tobi decides to go capture them. Kabuto offers to go instead if he is allowed to see the White Zetsu Army, adding that he can makes the army stronger if he is allowed to study one of the Zetsu clones. Tobi complies. Much to Tobi's displeasure, Kabuto fails in capturing either Naruto or B, but does bring back Yamato. After Kabuto convinces him to use a genjutsu and the proper drug to extract intel from Yamato instead of using the Human Path ability, Tobi allows Kabuto to use their captive to strengthen the White Zetsu army.
Shinobi World War Arc
When preparations are complete the thousands of Zetsu and many of Kabuto's reincarnated ninja mobilise for war. In the confusion, Kabuto also captures Anko Mitarashi. Tobi suspects that Kabuto led her to their hideout and believes Kabuto plans to have Akatsuki and the Allied Shinobi Forces destroy each other. Although confident that this will not happen, Tobi orders Kabuto to kill Anko. Kabuto refuses on the grounds that he can use Anko to make the Summoning: Impure World Resurrection stronger, something that is in Tobi's best interests.
To alleviate his unease, Tobi demands that Kabuto demonstrate the technique and tell him how to defeat it. To that end he brings out Fū and Torune, who have been kept under genjutsu since they were captured. He breaks Torune's neck and tells Kabuto to use Fū as a sacrifice to resurrect him. Kabuto does what is asked of him. When Zetsu later informs Tobi that Naruto and B are headed to the battlefield, Tobi decides to finally join the fray. He goes to the location of the First Division where he summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. While the Statue decimates the Division, Tobi seeks out the Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei, which contain the Gold and Silver Brothers. Darui and Shikamaru conclude he plans to make use of the brothers' Nine-Tails chakra and try to stop him. He compliments them on guessing his intentions and has the Statue attack them while he escapes with the two items.
As dawn breaks on the following day, Tobi stands behind his own Six Paths of Pain, comprised from the deceased jinchūriki. Tobi leads the Six Paths towards Killer B and Naruto. Naruto headbutts Tobi as soon as they meet, to which Tobi only responds by pointing out that Naruto couldn't even scratch his mask. Naruto notices his new Rinnegan and remarks that it is the same as the "other" Madara's. Realising that Kabuto has revealed his secret, Tobi quietly curses Kabuto before shedding his Madara-identity, embracing the role of "nobody".
Tobi has his Six Paths engage Naruto and a transformed Killer B. B devastates the area in an attempt to force Tobi away while he seals the six jinchūriki, which Tobi counters by having the jinchūriki enter Version 2-like forms. As the jinchūriki overwhelm Naruto and B, Tobi takes advantage of Naruto's distraction and nearly captures him, only to be parried by Might Guy and Kakashi Hatake. In the confusion of their appearance, the Five-Tails breaks free of Tobi's control but he promptly subdues it. He then forces the Four-Tails and Six-Tails to fully transform in an attempt to take control of the battle. The Four-Tails is able to swallow Naruto, leading Tobi to believe that Naruto is finally out of commission. Instead, the Four-Tails manages to communicate to Naruto how Tobi is controlling it. Naruto escapes from its mouth, locates the chakra receiver embedded in the Four-Tails' flesh, and removes it.
With the Four-Tails free, Tobi quickly summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to reseal the beast. He has the remaining jinchūriki transform into their respective tailed beasts to try and finally bring the situation under his control. Despite the overwhelming power of the five tailed beasts, Naruto, working in full cooperation with the Nine-Tails, is able to neutralise all of them and free them from Tobi's influence. Like the Four-Tails, Tobi seals them back into the Statue. Despite the setbacks, Tobi remains confident that he will emerge victorious.
Sometime later, the revived bodies of the jinchūriki, having been kept restrained by a transformed Killer B, are released from the effects of the Impure World Resurrection, causing them to once again become lifeless corpses. As this could only mean that Kabuto has failed, Tobi realises that time is running out. With no other option he tosses the Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei into the Demonic Statue's mouth which, in addition to the Eight-Tails' tentacle from the fake Killer B, completes the set of the nine tailed beasts, initiating the Ten-Tails' revival.
Ten-Tails Revival Arc
While the Demonic Statue undergoes its regeneration onto the Ten-Tails, Tobi protects it from Naruto, B, Guy, and Kakashi. Despite their combined efforts they are unable to get past Tobi or damage him. Tobi is even able to turn some of their own attacks against them, such as a lightning-infused kunai that Kakashi is forced to send away with Kamui. After this latter exchange, however, Kakashi notices that Tobi's mask takes damage. Unable to attribute the damage to any of their attacks, Kakashi tests a theory: after Tobi erects a barrier around the Statue, Naruto tries to hit him with a Rasengan. When the attack appears to pass through Tobi, Kakashi hits the Rasengan with Kamui, causing damage to Tobi's arm. Kakashi concludes that his Kamui and Tobi's Space–Time Ninjutsu share the same dimension; that attacks sent to the dimension at the same moment that Tobi has transported his body parts there for safety will do damage to Tobi.
Now that they have a strategy to use against Tobi, Naruto, B, Guy, and Kakashi begin to coordinate their efforts. One of Naruto's shadow clones attacks Tobi, but the attack appears to fail and the clone disappears. The real Naruto attacks immediately afterwards with a Tailed Beast Ball, which Tobi avoids by retreating to the other dimension. There he finds Naruto's shadow clone waiting for him, having been sent there by Kakashi's Kamui. Before he has a chance to react he is hit in the face with a Rasengan, shattering his mask.
His face revealed, Kakashi and Guy recognise him as their old comrade, Obito Uchiha. Guy, surprised with Obito's presence, wonders how he is still alive, while Kakashi confirmed it to be his former team-mate upon seeing both his Mangekyō Sharingan and a visibly altered face on the right half. When asked how he survived and why he never returned to Konoha, Obito mockingly states that it was because Kakashi had let Rin die, chuckling immediately after following Kakashi's shocked expression. As Kakashi hesitated to continue, Naruto instead rallied ahead to stop Obito, who promptly attacks with a fire technique. Right after Naruto intercepts the technique with Kurama's tails, Madara Uchiha arrives to Obito's side of the battlefield.
Striking up a conversation as they casually ignore their opponents, Obito is scolded for deviating from the original plan as he gives Madara his gunbai so he deflect several of the giant chakra receiver stakes thrown at them. Left to deal with Kakashi and Might Guy as Madara goes after Naruto and Killer B, after remembering the events that changed his outlook, Obito tells Kakashi that he has nothing left to say to him and that only thing they have left is a final battle. At first, Kakashi was more focused on getting answers that gave a vexed Obito an advantage. But once Obito's deathblow was intercepted by Naruto, Kakashi resolved to fight his former friend to protect his student.
As Obito questioned Kakashi's resolve, he also noted that Kakashi had used the Sharingan to perfect his Lightning Cutter and had even awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, but remarked that they would see whether or not Kakashi could return from the other dimension in his current condition. Creating a wooden branch from his right arm, Obito attempted to incapacitate Naruto while he warped Kakashi away. Naruto, however, headbutts Obito again, sending him reeling. When Kakashi is later thrown by Kurama, Obito takes the opportunity to warp Kakashi away. Unbeknownst to him however, this was all part of Kurama's plan and his opponents' two-fold attack is launched: as Naruto attacked Obito from the real-world, Kakashi, who had been given chakra by Kurama attacked the parts of Obito's body which had been warped to the other dimension. When Kakashi returned from the other dimension, Obito watched on as the Ten-Tails is revived despite Naruto and Killer B's attempt to destroy it and heralds the end of this world.
Joining Madara atop of the Ten-Tails' head, two tendrils attached themselves to the Uchiha to give them control over it. Wanting to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi immediately, Obito was dismayed when Madara expressed wanting to test out the beast's power first. As the skirmish continued, and Naruto saved Kakashi from a swipe of the beast's tail, Obito began to see a bit of his younger self in Naruto. As Kakashi, Guy, and the Eight-Tails all ran out of chakra, and stamina, Obito told Naruto of the futility of his friends' struggle against the Ten-Tails. As Naruto refused to give up on his dreams, Obito told him that there was no need for that as within the dream-world, he would make Naruto Hokage. He then had the Ten-Tails prepare and fire a Tailed Beast Ball, but momentarily found himself affected by a presence. This was revealed to be Ino Yamanaka's Mind Body Switch Technique which she used long enough to veer the attack off course. Obito and Madara soon found themselves shrouded in mist with all sensory methods jammed. Lamenting the futility of this, they had the Ten-Tails clear the mist with a powerful swing of its tail and the two men found themselves face-to-face with the remainder of the Allied Shinobi Forces army.
Deeming their efforts futile, Obito explained to Naruto that the members of the Allied Shinobi Forces would go their separate ways when the war ended and that someone else would eventually finish what he and Madara began. After having his statement that there was no hope for this world rebuffed, and being told by Naruto that the majority did not share their ideals, Obito told the young man that he and Madara would just simply have to exterminate everyone else. With the Alliance bearing down on them, the two Uchiha are buffeted by a barrage of attacks which blinded them, as well as robbed their sensory skills once again, as they tried to attack the Ten-Tails as well. With their opposition confronting them directly, as they momentarily stopped the beast's movements in super-heated quicklime cement, Obito and Madara lamented their opposition's tedious efforts as they reveal the Ten-Tails was about to reach maturity.
As the Allied Forces attempt to attack the two Uchiha, the beast emerges in its mature form. They both quickly realise controlling the Ten-Tails will be harder now and use Hashirama's cells to control it better and Obito decides it is time to show them true despair. They both use the beast's power to level several villages until the Tailed Beast Ball reaches the Alliances' Headquarters. The two then discuss how to proceed with their plans and the fact that in order to become the beast's jinchūriki, Madara required a living body which could only be given by Obito sacrificing his own, which was the only reason Madara did not have the beast use a Tailed Beast Ball to eradicate the entire Alliance, leaving the legendary Uchiha at Obito's mercy. Noting that Obito had developed quite the attitude, Obito stated that he always had it, since he never considered Madara an ally. With Obito deciding to teach the Allied Shinobi Forces despair much to Madara's liking, Obito uses the beast as a medium to fire off several wooden projectiles, sending the Alliance into a frenzy.
Opting for a pinpoint attack on Naruto, it is instead intercepted by Neji Hyūga, killing him in the process. Capitalising on this, Obito used Naruto's guilt over Neji's death against him while reminding him of the people he already lost and the loneliness he will drown in again once all of his friends eventually die. Though Obito put Naruto in a very perplexed state, even asking him to join their cause, Hinata Hyūga ruined his attempted manipulation as he had the Ten-Tails attack again. With Naruto entering Tailed Beast Mode again, Obito is shocked when the young man started dispensing the beast's chakra to those on the battlefield. Attacking with the beast once again, his attack is deflected and he later found himself being controlled once more. After the Ten-Tails is immobilised as well, Obito decried his opponents' belief that a fallen comrade should live on in their hearts, noting that it would only fester and become a curse.
Unable to move, Madara lends Obito some of his power to manipulate the beast but their attack deflected nonetheless. Upon hearing Hiashi Hyūga declare that Neji's sacrifice would not be in vain, Obito mocks him and his clan for having a system where members were essentially locked in cages awaiting their deaths. He and Madara are later shocked by the Alliance's counter-attack. Obito is then separated from the Ten-Tails as Naruto's Rasenshuriken while phasing through him, cut off his connection to the beast, while Rock Lee, enhanced by Kurama's chakra, severs Madara's connection with a strong kick. With this, the two Uchiha are forced to retreat to the ground.
Forced to battle the enemies directly, Obito and Madara collaborated their attacks, which fail to kill any shinobi in the Allied Forces thanks to the chakra cloak Naruto provided each of them. Obito chastised Naruto again, noting that he was contradicting himself in saying that he felt closer to his friends when they died, yet was overexerting himself to protect them. Naruto quickly rebuffed Obito's logic, telling him that a loner like him would not understand. As the Ten-Tails grew more restless, he decided the time for him to become its jinchūriki had arrived. Noticing Kakashi preparing to warp the beast away again, Obito intercepted him noting that he was waiting for Kakashi to make another attempt. As they both use Kamui on the other, they were warped away to Kamui's dimension.
Upon entering Kamui's dimension, Kakashi was able to maintain his balance unlike Obito, allowing him to quickly strike with his Lightning Cutter before Obito could react, only to stop at the last second. Surprised at first, Obito realised Kakashi was still hesitant to fight him. He then mockingly asked Kakashi if he was still plagued by guilt about failing to keep his promise, to which Kakashi pleaded with Obito to stop fighting by reminding him of who he was and that he can return to being that man. However, Obito laughed as he clarifies he did not start this war for Rin or Kakashi. While passing through Kakashi's Lightning Cutter to seemingly impaling himself, he casts a genjutsu to recreate the scene where Rin was impaled by the same technique. Revealing that he knew the truth behind Rin's death, Obito explains that it was the "fake" world they live in and system of the shinobi nations that made him lose hope.
Despite Kakashi's insistence that he still felt the way Naruto does, Obito stepped back and used the illusion of his injury to clarify that the hellish world they lived in was to blame for the hollowed man he has become. From there, Obito tried to sway Kakashi to his views, using illusions of his younger self and Rin to appeal to Kakashi's happier memories. However, destroying the illusions, Kakashi refused Obito's offer of a dream world on the grounds that it would never heal one's pain while their reality is not all cruel as having friends eases that suffering. Obito scoffed at Kakashi's words, saying that attachments like that are the source of suffering, but was taken back by Kakashi who reminds Obito of the lesson he taught him and that he will make him accept his ideals again by force if needed. Their battle then raged on, resulting in Obito and Kakashi stabbing each other with their respective attacks. Calling for an end to the games, both men dispel the genjutsu they were casting and being their real battle.
This battle resulted in with Obito being stabbed through the chest by Kakashi's Lightning Cutter-enhanced kunai while he had stabbed Kakashi in the side non-fatally, causing Obito who declared that the war was not yet won to retreat to the real world. Unbeknownst to Kakashi however, this was all part of Obito's plan to remove a seal place on his heart by Madara that he could not remove on his own. Knowing that Madara planned to manipulate him, Obito concluded it was the only way to become the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. Fleeing back to the real world fatally wounded, Madara who sensed Obito's presence on the battlefield once again and noted that he had no more use for Obito and solemnly expressed his regret at not being able to fight Hashirama properly before becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. Madara then proceeded with his plan and caused the embedded chakra receivers in Obito's body to sprout out. As the right half of Obito's body turned black, the young Uchiha is seemingly forced to use the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique in order to revive Madara. As the technique takes time to activate, Sasuke and Naruto race towards Obito to attempt to stop him from completing what appeared to be Samsara of Heavenly Life before Obito is cut down by Minato, who realised that he was the masked man who attacked Konoha years prior. However, it was revealed Obito managed to resist Madara's control from the start, and was instead sealing the Ten-Tails, foiling Madara's attempt at revival. Now the beast's jinchūriki, Obito was able to destroy both the Sage Art: Gate of the Great God and Four Red Yang Formation with ease. As Hashirama and the other Hokage noted that Obito's power is now superior to that of the God of the Shinobi, the Uchiha used his new-found powers to destroy large portions of Hashirama and Tobirama's bodies.
Obito soon found himself plastered with explosive tags planted by Tobirama who was able to retaliate to his previous attack. As the explosions detonate, he is shocked to find himself restrained by Hashirama's wood clone and confronted by Tobirama once again. As the Second noted that this technique was one created based off the fighting style for the reincarnated, Obito is bombarded by an onslaught of explosive tags. He, however, emerged from the blast unscathed as the Truth-Seeking Balls continued to protect him. Confronted by Hiruzen, Obito continued to use the substance to cut through the attacks and ultimately destroyed the Third's body as well. Moving to attack again, Obito is shocked when his body abnormally expanded, Minato used the opportunity to attack him in his vulnerable state. Obito is, however, able to counter not only Minato's attack but launch an attack on Naruto as well. Though this attack is initially deflected by Sasuke, Obito is able to break through Susanoo's defence and attack the two young shinobi.
Puzzled at what had happened when the two suddenly disappeared, avoiding his attack in the process, Obito freed the rest of his body before undergoing yet another unwanted modification as he struggled to get accustomed to being the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. Launching an attack during that time, it becomes clear that Obito is fighting for control of his body against the Ten-Tails and lost the aim of this attack resulting in destroying the right side of his body. Meanwhile in his subconscious, Obito fights to regain control of his consciousness, focusing on a single image of his old team. As the image was ripped apart, so was Obito ripped limb from limb until he was finally able to subjugate the Ten-Tails' power. Emerging from this in a new form even more reminiscent of the Sage of the Six Paths, Obito exclaimed that he had finally taken control before attacking his former teacher. Though Minato seemingly escaped, Obito drew his attention to the ball of mysterious substance which he had left attached to Minato, which had begun to glow and expand.
When Tobirama managed to return the ball to him, Obito was caught in the explosion, but immediately resurfaced unharmed, shielded by the mysterious substance. Countering several attacks from both Tobirama and Minato, as well as another Scorch Release: Halo Gale Jet Black Arrow Style Zero and a Starch Syrup Gun from Gamakichi, Obito hovered into the sky, using his supreme command of Yin-Yang Release to nullify their ninjutsu. When his former teacher, Minato, confronted him with his former ideals and his dream to become Hokage, Obito confronted Minato with his failure to stop both his fall and his attack on Konohagakure sixteen years ago, and how it was from him that he learned how pitiful the position of a Kage is. This lead Naruto to angrily tell Obito that he should not look down on a position only because he was unable to obtain it. With the aid of Tobirama's Flying Thunder God technique, he then successfully strikes Obito with a Rasengan, revealing Obito's weakness against senjutsu.
Noting to himself as he emerged from the rubble that the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki had a weakness such as this and his inability to proper utilise his Kamui technique, Obito declared that the world was coming to an end and that it was about time that he continued the Eye of the Moon plan. Creating an enormous tree in the midst of the Alliance, the four flowers on the plant started to charge a Tailed Beast Ball to attack them with. Obito then quickly traps everyone on the battlefield within the barrier noting that he would not allow them to escape so easily. As he wrapped himself in the mysterious, black substance in preparation for the blow, he decried Minato once again noting that it was the anniversary of Minato and Kushina's death as well. His berating of Minato, however, is greeted by Naruto's words that he would not allow the world to end. Watching on from the safety of he mysterious black substance which had encapsulated him at that point, Obito noted as the Alliance once again got enveloped in Version 1 chakra cloaks that something of that low calibre would not stop his attack. As he willed the world to disappear and launched the balls, Obito was shocked in the aftermath to see that there were no casualties within the barrier. As Naruto and Minato then tried to perform a sage-enhanced Tailed Beast Ball, Obito manifested the Ten-Tails to begin his Eye of the Moon Plan. The Ten-Tails changed into its final form of Shinju, the god tree, whose branches sought out the shinobi, absorbing all their chakra, killing them. Obito told the shinobi they should rest, having suffered enough, promising their suffering will stop with the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Capitalising on the shinobi's despair even more, he informed them all that they would not be killed once they surrendered and that their lives would be spared if they resigned themselves to their fate. Despite the grim situation the Allied Forces faced, Naruto's resolve and memories, transferred to his allies telepathically, restored the great army's will to fight, surprising Obito. Obito then was forced to defend himself against the senjutsu-enhanced Naruto and Sasuke's combined attacks, becoming increasingly infuriated with Naruto's unbreakable will. Continuing his battle with the duo, Obito begins to outmanoeuvre the two as well as bolster his defensive stance. As he once again gains the upper-hand on them, he takes the time to decry Naruto's beliefs noting good will ever come out of them. Sending the two crashing to the ground beneath him, he questioned Naruto about why he refused to stay down; the young man's response only served to incense Obito more.
After Naruto's Tailed Beast Mode is equipped with Sasuke's final Susanoo, Obito counters the armoured Kurama with the Sword of Nunoboko as Naruto and Sasuke enlist the aid of Sai and their fellow Konoha 11 allies except Sakura. During the clash, Obito began to imagine how his life would have ended up had he returned to Konoha after Rin died, reunited with to battle alongside his friends, and ultimately became Hokage. This distraction allows Naruto, Kurama and their comrades to slash through Obito and weaken his hold on the the Ten-Tails. This allows Naruto, Gaara, and Killer B to extract the tailed beasts with the aid of the entire Allied Shinobi Forces begin.
Struggling to keep the tailed beats, Obito again finds himself reflected on what could have been with Naruto seeing his thoughts. Seeing Naruto before him, stating that they are the same in how they lived as children, Obito attempts to deny caring for his childhood dream as the youth tells him that he is living a lie and intends to remove the mask despite his continued denial. Naruto even tells Obito that only subjugate the Ten-Tails because he refused to give up his memories of his genin team. Though he attempts to strangle Naruto before being punched off, Obito begins seeing Naruto as his younger self completely. As Obito continues to tell himself he prefers to be alone, Naruto grabs Obito and forcibly drags him over, telling Obito it is time to rejoin his friends and not underestimate them. Once the Allied Shinobi Forces manage to separate the nine tailed beasts' chakra, Obito reverted to his original form and wondering if Naruto and Kakashi were right about him all along while looking at the hand he remembered Rin regularly grabbing to drag him along.
By that time, as Sasuke was about to kill him, Kakashi returns from the other dimension and pins the defeated Obito, accepting his fate. But Minato intervened, having Kakashi stand down after telling him that Naruto's persistent scolding had reached Obito. Obito then states that Rin was the only light in his life and that losing her left him in darkness. He further explains that he felt the world was hopeless afterwards and that everything he's seen along his path confirmed that belief. Kakashi shocks Obito by admitting that he was never completely sure of Naruto's worldview yet states it has a better success rate than Madara's. Asking Kakashi why he would choose Naruto's way, Obito learns that the youth inspires others to aid him.
As he reflected on the past, Obito decided to use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique as penance for his actions noting that there was no other way to atone for them. While in this weakened state, Black Zetsu emerged from underground shocking them. As he fused with Obito's body, he forced the Uchiha to use the technique to revive Madara instead.
Infinite Tsukuyomi Arc
When Minato and Kakashi questioned what just happened, Obito weakly explained that Madara had been revived. Black Zetsu then attempted to take Obito's left eye and return it to Madara but is forced to stay merged to Obito when he is attacked by Minato and Kakashi. Now controlling Obito again, Black Zetsu stated that he would force Obito to fight them until he breathed his final breath. Suddenly, the Demonic Statue is extracted from Obito body having been summoned to Madara's side. Black Zetsu again attempted to take the left Rinnegan. Struggling to maintain control of his body, Obito managed to stop Black Zetsu, telling Kakashi to get ready to destroy the eye. Black Zetsu informed Obito that the right Rinnegan he hid was retrieved by a Zetsu clone and returned to Madara already. Around the time when Naruto, Sakura, Gaara and Madara arrived, Kakashi noted that he could no longer sense Obito's consciousness.
Soon afterwards, Black Zetsu managed to steal the Yin half of Kurama inside Minato during the Hokage's attempt to transfer it into his son. Madara, now the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, arrived to regain his left eye and unable to wait anymore for Black Zetsu to retrieve it. Apologising for the delay, Black Zetsu informed Madara that he had also managed to retrieve the other half of the Nine-Tails' chakra, pleasing Madara. As Black Zetsu attempted to return to Madara, determined to talk to Madara, Obito overpowered Black Zetsu and kept it merged to his body. Asking Madara what he was to him, Obito decided that the legendary Uchiha's response that Obito was also Madara, was no longer a satisfactory answer for someone who wanted to control the world after hearing Naruto's words about what being Hokage meant. Responding to Madara's call to his side, Obito opts to impale his ancestor in the chest while forming a shakujō in his other hand and declaring that he was Obito Uchiha — the man who once wanted to become Hokage.
As his former team-mate and teacher relished in the return of the Obito they once knew, Madara attempted to take back his left eye from Obito, who uses Kamui to evade his attempt. Madara leapt away, but Obito's hand remained in his chest, trying to steal tailed beasts from Madara in an effort to weaken him. Madara mocked Obito, who was able to rip off a small portion of Shukaku and Gyūki. As Kakashi transported Naruto to the other dimension per Obito's request, Madara stopped Obito from following him. Obito figured that Madara would be able to stop him each time he attempted to transport himself due to his advantage in speed. Kakashi joined him and asked if Naruto could be saved if Obito is transported, he confirmed. Obito then asked Kakashi, who noted that it had been a long time since they had been a team, to back him up, as Kakashi asked Obito not to mess it up.
Reminding Madara that two eyes are stronger when they're together, confusing the elderly Uchiha who assumed Obito was talking about the Rinnegan, Obito corrected Madara and stated that he was referring to his original eyes. By combining the power of their individual Kamui, Obito was able to successfully teleported quickly to the other dimension, alarming Sakura. Skeptical on whether or not she could trust him, Obito assured her he would save Naruto. Obito spoke regretfully about his inability to walk straight, but that his path had led him to this point. He sealed Yin Kurama in Naruto, as well as the portions of Shukaku and Gyūki, knowing that Naruto already had a portion of the other tailed beasts' charka inside him. After Naruto finally regained consciousness, Obito teleported Naruto back to the normal dimension. Obito then asked Sakura for a request as an enemy. As Obito struggled to maintain control of Black Zetsu, he begged Sakura to destroy the left Rinnegan. He explained that the true power of the Rinnegan can only be wielded with both eyes and in its original owner, insisting that Sakura not allow Madara to regain his full power. As Sakura prepared to, Madara, having stolen Kakashi's Sharingan and used its power to teleport, arrived in time to stop Sakura's effort.
Seeing Madara's attack coming, Obito teleported Sakura back to the normal dimension to save her, but was too weak to go along with her, leaving him at Madara's mercy. As Madara congratulated Obito for finding and removing the cursed seal he placed on him, the older Uchiha revealed that Obito's entire fall into darkness was in fact his doing; having the Three-Tails being sealed into Rin and ensuring her demise as Obito's pure heart would make him an ideal pawn once corrupted. As Obito began to absorb the horrific truth, Madara decided to reclaim his left eye from Obito.
After Madara took back his Rinnegan and re-implanted Obito's original Sharingan into the younger Uchiha's left eye socket within another dimension, Black Zetsu again took over Obito's body and used it to teleport Madara and himself to the normal dimension. After Naruto shouted out to Obito, Zetsu lamented that Obito was no more now that he took his body. Mockingly dismissing Obito as a selfish brat who wanted to make up for his mistakes, Zetsu remained attached to Obito's body until he betrayed Madara. Afterwards, Zetsu allowed himself to be absorbed by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki in order to revive her, which sent Obito falling to the ground as Kakashi looked on. Kaguya then teleported herself and the only living beings to escape the Infinite Tsukuyumi into a volcano above a pit of lava which sent Obito's body plummeting down towards it along with the members of the original Team 7. Before he could fall in the lava, however, Kakashi had stopped Obito's descent by nailing his hand to the wall of the cave with a kunai, apologising to his childhood friend for doing so. Later on, he is lifted off the wall and carried along with Sakura and Kakashi by a clone of Naruto to safety. The clone then used its power to resuscitate Obito. After Obito awakens, his new allies explain the situation. Obito quickly sees through the mechanics of Kaguya's space-time manipulation and theorises that he can synchronize the power of Kamui in both his eyes to retrieve the captured Sasuke. Noting however that he is still too weak to make the journey both ways, Sakura and the Naruto-clone offer to use their chakra, to which Obito agrees, determined to bring back Sasuke even at the cost of his life.
As Naruto's efforts with the aid of the tailed beasts inside him managed to overwhelm Kaguya, the princess shifted away through her dimensional portal, letting Obito teleport with Naruto-clone and Sakura. As they arrived, the shadow clone distracted Kaguya while Obito used Kamui to hide himself and Sakura inside his own dimension. After the clone is destroyed, tricking Kaguya into believing it was the original, she returns to the normal, letting Obito and Sakura emerge safely. Obito then begins opening gateways to numerous dimensions, sensing for Sasuke's presence as Sakura begins pouring all of her chakra into his body to maintain the gateways. The task strains both of them a great deal but trial and error eventually leads them to the dimension that Sasuke was trapped in. Taking the opportunity, Sasuke makes it through the gateway Obito held up and meets up with the two, before the two transport to the dimension where Naruto, Kakashi and Kaguya are.
After returning to the battlefield, Obito, Sasuke and Sakura looked on with shock as Naruto was seemingly caught and impaled by Kaguya. After realising it was a clone, a relieved Obito told Naruto not to scare them. Afterwards, Zetsu and Kaguya resolved that it was time to end the battle quickly, as Kaguya increased the gravity of the battlefield, sending everyone, including herself to the ground. After sending a pinpointed attack towards Naruto and Sasuke after the two ninja dodged the first, Obito and Kakashi simultaneously charged forth, empowered by a familiar memory of the two of them together, along with Rin. As Kakashi and Obito stood ready to take the attacks intended for Naruto and Sasuke, Obito, in an act of selflessness, used Kamui to teleport the attack heading towards Kakashi to safeguard his life. Horrified by Obito's sacrifice, likening it to the time he saved him from the boulder, Kakashi was told by Obito not to follow him to the afterlife for a long time.
As Obito's body started to crumble, a sorrowful Kakashi asked Obito why he gave his life for him when his powers are still needed, dismissing himself as useless. Telling Kakashi to focus on the enemy, Obito thought about how the new generation still needed Kakashi to support them, and that it was too soon for him to die. Quickly rushing to Obito's side, Naruto attempted to heal Obito once more with his power, before being scolded by Black Zetsu and told by Obito that his efforts were in vain. Black Zetsu continued to deride Obito for being a traitor to everyone, much to the chagrin of Naruto. Accepting his fate and his role, Obito explained to Naruto that as a result of fighting alongside him, he was happy and that he could once again remember the feeling of wanting to be Hokage. Obito then told Naruto that he knew he would definitely become the Hokage, before dying with a smile on his face as his body crumbled away.
Obito then found himself in the afterlife with Rin, appearing as he did in his youth. Rin told Obito that she had been waiting for him. Apologising for taking so long and getting lost along the way, Obito told her that a lot of things had happened since then, as she reached out her hand. Filled with guilt, Obito tried to tell her that he failed his promise of becoming Hokage. However, Rin assured Obito that it was okay because he tried his very hardest. Taking Obito's hand, Rin told the young Uchiha that up to this day, she was always watching over him, and asked him to come with her to the other side. However, Obito decided to meet Kakashi once more before following Rin, and told her to wait a little more as he knew Kakashi was still in need of help against Kaguya. His spirit returning to the living world, Obito entered Kakashi's body and spoke to him within his subconscious. Reminding Kakashi to not follow him anytime soon and wanted to give back Kakashi his gift for becoming a jōnin, Obito told Kakashi to become the Sixth Hokage and stated he would give him a present in advance, reminding his old team-mate of how famous he actually was, as "Kakashi of the Sharingan". With that, Obito passed on his chakra and Sharingan powers to Kakashi, letting the jōnin manifest the dōjutsu in both his own original eyes.
Naruto Shippūden 3: Inheritors of the Will of Fire
Obito appeared briefly in a flashback when Hiruko explains how Kakashi came to obtain his Sharingan.
Naruto 6: Road to Ninja
Tobi first appears in before a bickering Naruto and Sakura in a park. After the two attempt to attack him to no avail, he initiates the Limited Tsukuyomi, a trial version of the Infinite Tsukuyomi that traps Naruto and Sakura in an alternate dimension, a plan that would eventually allow him to extract the Nine-Tails from him. Later on, Tobi is seen discussing the Limited Tsukuyomi with Zetsu, who points out that Tobi would not be able to have control over the world he creates unlike with the real thing, but Tobi assures him that he will make sure that Naruto and Sakura will not be able to control the world despite being able to influence it. Tobi then inserts a transparent projection of himself into the genjutsu world and communicates with a masked man known as Menma (who is on the hunt for his own jinchūriki and is the genjutsu world's version of Naruto) to offers him a partnership to which Menma accepts. After Menma defeats Sakura and ties her in chains, Tobi appears before her as a projection to inform her that if everything goes as planned, things like suffering will no longer be an issue. Naruto then comes to confront him, but because he is not actually part of the genjutsu world, he sends Menma to fight Naruto instead. With things appearing to be tipped in Menma's favor at the beginning, the tides soon change when the genjutsu world's Akatsuki (who are merely mercenaries rather than criminals) arrive to aid Naruto and Sakura.
Itachi Uchiha appears to free Sakura from her chains, prompting Obito to escape. After finding Naruto and Menma who were still engaged in battle elsewhere, Obito takes advantage of their weakened states and begins initiating the last phase of his plan. With Naruto and Kurama weakened from fighting Menma, Obito possesses Menma's body to fight and eventually subdue Naruto with genjutsu in order to extract the Nine-Tails from him, similar to how he did to Naruto's mother sixteen years ago. To weaken Naruto with Menma was Obito's plan from the start, and after defeating Naruto in battle and erasing his memory with his Sharingan genjutsu, he begins extracting the Nine-Tails. Before he could finish however, Sakura comes to rescue Naruto. Obito in Menma's body then begins to attack Sakura, however Naruto manages to break from his genjutsu and save her. Naruto then proceeds to proceed to defeat Obito in the same way Minato did on the night of the Nine-Tails attack. Obito then emerges from Menma's body and attempts to attack Naruto with a set of chains before being intercepted by the genjutsu world versions of Minato and Kushina. Finally, Obito decides to give up and exit the Tsukuyomi world, thus breaking the Limited Tsukuyomi and freeing Naruto and Sakura.

- Obito is the third jinchūriki to survive the extraction of a tailed beast, after Kushina Uzumaki and Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, and before Naruto Uzumaki.
- (To Kakashi) "Those who break the rules are trash, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than trash! If I'm going to be called trash either way, I'd rather break the rules! And if that somehow makes me anything less than a real shinobi, then I'll crush all of the so-called "real" shinobi!"
- (To Kakashi) "I'm about to… die… but I'll become your eye… and see the future with you."
- (Before his presumed death) "Just when me and Kakashi were becoming friends… I couldn't bring myself to confess to Rin… I wish I had more time with everyone…"
- (To Minato, in his own mind) "Minato-sensei, this, all of this… this entire world… I don't care about it anymore."
- (To Kisame, about his Eye of the Moon Plan) "It will be a new world… A world of truth, not lies."
- (To Pain and Konan) "The true power of the Sharingan… this is Madara Uchiha's power!" (写輪眼の本当の力が… このうちはマダラの力が!, "Sharingan no hontō no chikara ga… kono Uchiha Madara no chikara ga!")
- (Thinking to himself) "The moment people come to know love, they run the risk of carrying hate."
- (To Naruto and Killer B) "The war has already begun… My name no longer matters. You can call me by my old name, Tobi, if you prefer. Madara, Tobi… call me whatever you want."
- (To Naruto and Killer B) " I'm no one… I don't want to be anyone. All I care about is completing the Eye of the Moon Plan. This world is completely worthless… there is nothing left in it but misery."
- (To Kakashi) "You've seen reality, you should be able to understand… No wish can become true in this world. That's why I'm pursuing the dream of Infinite Tsukuyomi. I want to build a world where heroes don't have to make pitiful excuses in front of graves."
- (Thinking to himself) "You remind me of myself… Naruto… yeah… just like when I was young… but, that'll all change with time…"
- (To Naruto) "…There is no such thing as a victory in this world. Hope… is merely an illusion."
- (To Naruto after Neji's death) "This is what happens when you talk about hope and ideals… This is reality. Naruto… what do you have in this reality? You have no father and mother… your master Jiraiya is dead, and as long as you keep opposing, your friends will die one after the other. No one that acknowledges you will survive. And you already know what lies ahead of all this… Loneliness. There's no need to be in this reality, come here Naruto!"
- (To Kakashi) "Look! There is nothing in my heart! I don't even feel pain!! You don't have to feel guilty, Kakashi. This windhole was opened by this hell of a world."
- (To Minato) "We're way past the point of lectures, wouldn't you agree, sensei? When it came to life changing events… you were always a step behind… I'm glad my sensei was the Hokage. Thanks to that, it was easier for me to let my dream die… Despite being my master, you failed to recognise your own pupil… You've always had that oblivious nature about you, from the moment I met you... I can't help but pity you… The hallowed martyr… shamed in front of his living son… Yes… a mere Hokage is simply fodder compared to what I've become…"
- (To Madara) "A real leader may let others step over his corpse… but he'll never step over his comrades'. […] Now I finally realised that faking one's name and letting others do everything for you is different than entrusting something to one's comrades. I'm not you. The current me is the one who wanted to become Hokage: Obito Uchiha!"
- (To Naruto) "I am Kakashi's friend, a subordinate of your father, an Uchiha like Sasuke, and… I'm someone who had the same dream as you a long time ago. Now there's no time to go on with sophisms, but at least let me walk in front of you… and die!"
- (Last words, to Naruto) "You'll probably have to suffer again from now on… but don't change, keep going your way. You told me that you never change your words… that's your ninja way. Right? Naruto, become Hokage… at all costs."
