  • This is just an idea I had i my head since the end of the series. Kakashi being the Hokage bugs me on a conceptual level. There was no hint Tsunade wanted to relinquish the roll of Hokage save her initial dismissal of the position and she seemed to have great pride in the position during the Pain Assault and the 4th Shinobi War. It also bothers me the leaf village has gone through so many Kage in short span of time.

I do agree Kakashi should have been promoted but it should have been as Jonin Commander since Shikaku died in the war. He would still be integral to the village but Tsunade wouldn't have suddenly step down for no reason.

I also like this idea because I always cared for the idea of Tsunade giving Naruto the Hokage Hat, passing down Nawaki's and Dan's dream onto him herself.

    • no kakashi being hokage was logical. naruto wasn't ready to be hokage and Tsunade was already pretty old when she took office, you really think she wouldn't retire after going through so much since taking office? and even when a kage retires they are still a kage

      Onoki

Kakashi was not the best choice just after a war that slaughtered likely over 4/5ths of the Shinobi Population.

Why wouldn't he be? He's got a more strategical mind than Tsunade. He's got more experience in leading overall as well.

      How?

Kakashi = 2 years total as Team 7's sensei and a few unspecified as a potential Anbu captain

Tsunade = 4 Years of managing a village that has gone through two cataclysmic invasions.

Kakashi has been leading teams since he was 13. Both as a Jonin and as an Anbu Captain. He's lead Obito and Rin (failed, but it's experience nonetheless), Team Ro in however many successful missions, Team 7, Team 10, the Akimichi duo, etc.

Also "Few unspecified missions" lemme correct that real quick. At the beginning of Part 1, Kakashi has completed 1,141 official missions in total: 197 D-rank, 190 C-rank, 414 B-rank, 298 A-rank, 42 S-rank. And in almost all missions we've seen him in, he was the leader. He started leading teams at 13, and was a Chunin (military captain) at age 6.

Tsunade wasn't called back to Konoha for her leadership skills, if you recall. She was called back so the 5 Nations would know that the Leaf was not under a weak leader after Hiruzen died in the Konoha Crush. And the Sannin were legendary. They did prefer Jiraiya, but Jiraiya didn't want to. Tsunade was called back just as a statement to the other nations.

And look at Tsunade. Extremely capable kunoichi. Extremely capable medical ninja. What leadership roles did she take before Hokage? None that we know of. We know she trained under Hiruzen with the rest of the Sannin. Then after Hiruzen left the team, the Sannin fought together anyways during the war. Then Jiraiya left and Tsunade worked on countering Chiyo's poisons. After the war, she developed haemophobia. We can assume she left the life of a Shinobi soon after.

Tsunade is extremely capable and she did pretty well as Hokage. But Kakashi was always shown to be more of a pragmatic leader

    • I agree that Konoha has had too muuch turn over when it comes to Kage's. The fact that tsunade was there for only a short amount of time was crazy imo.

i enjoy the fact that They waited until naruto was ready to become hokage though, and kakashi becoming hokage honestly came out of nowhere, yes he was nominated when tsunade was in her coma but she shouldve continued for at least another couple of years

No reason. She was already pretty old when she took office, and Konoha had another younger capable ninja for the job.

Onoki is a great reason why people his age shouldn't be (ho)kage. Even Hiruzen felt he was already too old, and well, Tsunade was close to his age.

    • The idea of Kages having shorter periods of service in the Hokage position is to show how the world has changed, instead of simply dying and self electing a new Hokage, Hokages happily retire their position and pass it on to the next generation, they sure aren't gonna take the position as long as Sarutobi did.

    • Being old isn't a disqualifier, especially for Tsunade. Despite aging horribly she was still capable of fighting for hours against the villain sue that is Madara Uchiha.

And regarding Kakashi's qualifications, everything you've stated only proves he's excellent in a military position but the Hokage is much more than that.

We don't know the extent of Tsunade's history but she is regarded as Princess Tsunade, a shinobi who's likely seen more War than most of Kakashi's Era.

Add to the fact she's already been Hokage for 4 years under stressful times. There is no reason she would have retired. It was done because Kishimoto wanted Kakashi to be The Hokage.

I apologize if I sound hostile but this is a pet peeve I have with the ending.

Hiruzen stepped down from Hokage due to his age. Ohnoki was having back problems and had to be saved a few times during th war because of it (he did brilliantly for his age, but he was a liability because of his age).

Hokage is a military position, you're sending out forces and strategizing based on strengths and weakness. And Kakashi already teaches the importance of teamwork again and again. He's a great candidate for Hokage.

I just gave you the extent of Tsunade's history lol. And since when does the title "Princess" make one more qualified for Hokage? And Kakashi has arguably just as much experience. He's been through war and actually became a war hero at 13, and he's been through all those missions as an Anbu. Tsunade quit the Shinobi life at around Kakashi's age at Part 1. So their experience should be similar. Except Kakashi was chosen to lead teams, while Tsunade was mainly a team fighter with the other Sannin.

She was already pretty old for Hokage. That's one reason for her to retire (like Hiruzen did before Minato died and he took up office again). Another reason is that she didn't want to be Hokage in the first place; she was only doing it to live Dan and Nawaki's dreams for them. Kakashi is a younger, capable leader. Hagoromo himself commended Kakashi's leadership capabilities. He was a great candidate for Hokage until Naruto was ready.

    • Didn't Hirzuen step down because of political issues? Or was that filler.

Anyways, i do believe that Kakashi as the Hokage is well deserved, i just felt like it was more of Tsunade saying "F**k this sh*t" and handing it down to Kakashi

    • It's important to take in to account that Kakashi becomes the Hokage directly following a war in which the greatest shinobi in history were returned from the dead and brought to bear against the living ninja of every village.

We didn't see everything that happened, but we know Shikamaru and Ino's dads got chunked pretty hard. We also saw what just Madara did to an entire army of shinobi. If we infer from those scenes that there was a fair degree of casualty, then Konoha, and all of the villages would have been hurting for man-power and making swift promotions to fill the gaps left by the dead ninja.

You see it a lot in real-world wars. Low-ranking soldiers getting promoted just to fill gaps. Konoha would probably actually really need it, since they had that attack by Orochimaru. Then Pain. Then this war, all in fairly rapid succession.

Kakashi becoming the Jonin Commander fits with that excellently though. Tsunade was already recognized as one of the best doctors in the world and she already did surgery for extreme cases, ie Rock Lee.

I'm looking at this from a writer's perspective. Nothing was established for this change, besides Obito's out of nowhere request, and it kinda squanders on Tsunade's character as it was presented in the last few arcs.

    • Was Kakashi being selected Hokage the best thing cuz if I remember correctly he had nothing in his arsenal to stop the meteorite that was coming to Konoha in The Last. He literally was sitting there and Sasuke had to save the day. Tsunade at the very least could have destroyed most of it with her 100 Markings. I would have preferred Kakashi to have been Jonin Commander. He really didn't have the firepower and/or defense mechanisms to protect the village and its citizens like a Kage is suppose to. Tsunade may not have been able to defeat Pain, but she could protected many citizens during Pain's assault.

You think that a Kage has to be able to blow up a meteor to qualify for Hokage? Also, several 6th Gates users blew up half of it. I doubt Tsunade on her own could take out the other half. I think the point of that display with the meteor was to show that no one could deal with that except Naruto or Sasuke.

        Loading editor
    • I never said that. You need to be able to lead and most importantly be able to protect your village when in crisis. I'm not dissing on Kakashi, but all the other kage were able to deal with the meteor. I mean it was even sliced in half and Kakashi did nothing but stare. Tsunade most definitely could take out the other half or at least knock it away in the opposite direction. The woman could literally smash down humanoid Susanoo, a highly durable defence. Anyway, Tsunade has proven her importance as Hokage, what has Kakashi really proven since becoming elected?

Kakashi can definitely lead, and he can definitely protect his village against other Shinobi.

I seriously doubt that Tsunade can do the same amount of force as 7 people in their 6th Gates. But that's a debatable thing, so I'll leave that point be.

What would the other Kage do to a meteor that big? The Raikage wouldn't do more than Tsunade, and I'm not convinced Tsunade would take care of it better than the Crane Formation.

Tsunade has been Hokage for most of the series, of course she's proven her importance. Kakashi was hardly shown as Hokage. Of course we would know what Tsunade was like as Hokage more than Kakashi. But it seems there weren't any notable problems while he was in office. Whether that means he was just a really good leader in a time where literally everything with the Shinobi relations were changing, or he was lucky enough to not have too many issues because of peacetime, take your pick. It doesn't discount his qualifications to the position.

I really don't see any qualifications to make Sharingan-less Kakashi a Hokage, but it is what it is I guess. My point still stands, he'd better off be a Jonin Commander. His intellect would be very helpful.

        Loading editor
    • @Rachin, he's a fantastic leader who's good at inspiring his followers, and he's calm in the face of impending threats. Those are good qualities for Hokage.

He's also still an extremely capable Shinobi without the Sharingan. Lack of a Sharingan doesn't make him a worse Shinobi, it adds to his stamina and subtracts from his arsenal. But he's still got his intelligence, his jutsu, and his keen senses. He just can last longer now.

His intellect doesn't make him less suited for Hokage than Jonin Commander.

        Loading editor
    • @Reaper

Let's be very honest. Kakashi's most intense battles have involved him using the Sharingan and its variants. Sure his stamina has rose, but really, he's not as powerful as an opponent as he was with those assets. He's still a very capable shinobi. He has his jutsu arsenal which with his intellect can be used quite effectively, but in my opinion, I am not seeing Hokage worthy. Facts is he became Hokage, but I have my reasons to disagree with him even being one considering his setbacks, and what seems to be low pros with his stamina.

        Loading editor
    • @Rachin

That's fair, his most intense battles have been with him using his Sharingan.

But consider that he was fighting at Jonin level when he was 13. He had senses that impressed Minato, an intelligence compared to Shikamaru, etc.

He has proven his abilities that don't require the Sharingan time and time again. The Sharingan (until Kamui, that is) was just a tool; Kakashi was the man behind it. Even several Uchiha have noted Kakashi's prowess the Sharingan. It was his own skill that let him get to that point. He still has his own natural skill.

        Loading editor
    • @Reaper

Yea. Not knocking the man wielding it. You can wield a special power but how you do it is dependent on the user. Kakashi has earned the praise he has given, but we can't forget that this was him with his Sharingan. That's all I'm saying and is why I stand by my opinion.

If you take a look, none of the new Kages other than Naruto and Gaara have the power to block such a meteor. I would doubt Tsunade could destroy it in such a way. Can she even reach to the meteorite? Didn't Kakashi move away all the villagers in time or were they behind him? He did devise a strategy using the gates users, and from what we can see, Konohamaru will be the next coming Hokage, who I doubt to be on the same level.

Just saying, that at the time, even the gates users couldn't do anything but slice the meteor, so it was beyond the feat of any normal user. Against, any monster threat or war threat, then I'm sure Kakashi's leadership will easily save the village.

Then again, would Minato be able to teleport that meteor away with FTG? Just being curious here.

If you scale Sakura with Tsunade, yes she could easily handle that meteorite.

    • To be honest, I didn't see any feats shpwing Tsunade or Sakura strong enough to break that meteorite. I'm not saying she can't. Just don't she can.

Kakashi should have mastered a barrier jutsu, and teach three ither capable shinobi to master it too, something like the Hokage's barrier jutsu. That would have easily protected the village.
