Hi bois and girls (and transgender and genderfluid and whatnot)
Today I want to talk to you about the use and overuse of Japanese terms in this wiki. As those who visited my user page in the last year might have noticed, I have a little to do-list which I never got around to post here.
On that list, one point says "Remove translation template from intros, because it unnecessarily lengthen's them. Most nicknames can be found in the infobox at the same height of the intro anyway.". Another one says "Also, use of translation template in general. Where and when not to." and "The translation template should not be used for terms outside of their own article (ex. Steam Armour in Han's article)." as well as "General terms that exist outside of Naruto don't need the template".
I noticed these things ever since I began working here, a recent example (like, some minutes old) would be this one.
In my opinion, we overuse Japanese terms and I would like that to stop. My proposal is as follows:
- No Japanese terms in intros. Either they're nicknames which can be found literally five centimeters to the right, in the infobox, or they're the Japanese versions of titles like "Hokage", in which case the Japanese doesn't have any relation to the article, only to the term Hokage itself and, surprise surprise, the translation of that term can be found in its article. As an example, Minato's intro:
- Minato Namikaze (波風ミナト, Namikaze Minato) was the Fourth Hokage (四代目火影, Yondaime Hokage, Literally meaning: Fourth Fire Shadow) of Konohagakure. He was famous in life for his speed, leading to the moniker of Konoha's Yellow Flash (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光, Konoha no Kiiroi Senkō, English TV: Yellow Flash of the Leaf). He died during the Nine-Tails' attack on Konoha, sacrificing his life to seal a part of the Nine-Tails into his newborn son, Naruto Uzumaki.

- No translation for terms outside of their own articles (examples above). The term "natural energy" has a direct relation to "Jugo's clan", but what does 自然エネルギー have to do with "Jugo's clan"? Nothing. So why mention it in the article?
- And last but not least, real life-terms don't need the translation table at all. Who cares that the Japanese word for "boiling point" is 沸点? No one. Plus, where do we stop? Why not add the Japanese word for every major term?
Discuss, I gotta get my laundry.
