- I'm not 100% sure, but I believe on is a phonetic alphabet for native sounds, and the other is a phonetic alphabet for foreign sounds, such as phonemes which aren't natural to Japanese. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 22:18, October 14, 2011 (UTC)
