The Rinne Sharingan (輪廻写輪眼, literally meaning: Saṃsāra Copy Wheel Eye) is the originator of the Rinnegan and Sharingan.[1] It is characterised by a ripple-like pattern which spreads over the eyeball, with red sclerae and irides, containing nine tomoe.

Background

Kaguya's dojutsu

Kaguya's Rinne Sharingan.

This dōjutsu was first manifested by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki after eating the Shinju's fruit, and later by the Ten-Tails, the combined entity of Kaguya and the Shinju. Madara Uchiha, after retrieving both of his own Rinnegan and approaching the moon, awakened this dojutsu in his forehead, allowing him to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi.[2] As a result of Black Zetsu's actions, Madara's body then served as a vessel for the resurrected Kaguya, who retained the Rinne Sharingan in her own third eye.[3]

Abilities

Kaguya can teleport herself and others to a series of alternate dimensions.[4] The Rinne Sharingan is also able to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi,[2] a powerful genjutsu which Sasuke believes can only be countered by his Rinnegan.[5] Kaguya's Rinne Sharingan possesses the ocular power and techniques of the Sharingan, as stated by Hagoromo.[6]

Trivia

  • The kanji Rin (, literally meaning: Wheel) is also used in Rinnegan and Sharingan, potentially linking the three terms etymologically.
  • The Infinite Tsukuyomi, despite only being casted by the Rinne Sharingan, has been referred to by Sasuke as genjutsu of the Rinnegan. However, the distinction between the Rinnegan and Rinne Sharingan was made clear in the Fourth Databook.
