Ninjutsu, most of the time, relies on chakra and hand seals to be effective. The hands are put in sequential positions that moulds and manipulates chakra in the necessary manner to perform a technique. This is not always needed, however, and some techniques become second nature to experienced ninja, after which they can perform them at will.

When creating a ninjutsu, the two methods of manipulating chakra are referred to as shape transformation and nature transformation:

* Shape transformation deals with controlling the form, movement, and potency of chakra.

* Nature transformation usually deals with changing the physical properties of chakra into an element.

These two methods can be implemented separately or together in order to create a ninjutsu.

It is said that the Sage of the Six Paths was the first to explain the mysteries of chakra, travelling throughout the world to spread his ideas and religion, the . The teachings were meant to give people a better understanding of themselves, as well as others, and lead the world into an era of peace. However, as time wore on, ninshū would eventually come to be known as ninjutsu, a more weaponised version of the Sage's teachings.

It can be used in collaboration with taijutsu to create nintaijutsu techniques.

Rasengan

The Rasengan is an example of ninjutsu.

Ninjutsu (忍術, literally meaning: Ninja Techniques) is one of the three main jutsu categories. Ninjutsu is the most nebulous of the three and may most simply be described as anything that is not genjutsu or taijutsu. Most ninjutsu require chakra and hand seals, but this is not always the case since the mere usage of weaponry qualifies as ninjutsu. The huge range of ninjutsu's uses is illustrated by its several sub-classifications: medical ninjutsu, reincarnation ninjutsu, space–time ninjutsu, barrier ninjutsu, sealing jutsu, and Cursed Seal jutsu.

Ninjutsu is human's corrupted use of the Sage of the Six Paths' ninshū; rather than use chakra to achieve understanding and create peace as the Sage intended, humans weaponised their chakra for war. Most ninjutsu use shape transformation, nature transformation, or both: shape transformation deals with controlling the form and movement of the ninjutsu, while nature transformation deals with changing the ninjutsu's physical properties. Ninjutsu that use nature transformation tend to follow a naming convention of their nature type followed by a more specific name, "Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique" for example. With practice and experience, certain ninjutsu can become second nature to a ninja, allowing them to perform it at will.

Trivia

 • The simultaneous use of ninjutsu and taijutsu is called "nintaijutsu".
