Basic Ninja Ranks
Academy Student
Main article: Academy Student The academy is where would-be ninja start; they are not actually considered ninja until they graduate. Academy students take formal and practical tests of all sorts and are taught the basics. Basic weapon usage, such as kunai and shuriken, is commonly taught. Elementary ninja techniques, though they vary from village to village, are also taught. These include the Transformation Technique, Rope Escape Technique, Body Replacement Technique, Clone Technique, Exploding Tag: Activate, Cloak of Invisibility Technique.
Genin
Main article: Genin Genin (下忍, Genin; Literally meaning "Low Ninja", Meaning (Viz) "Junior Ninja") are the lowest level of ninja and also the ones that display the most difference in power. When they become Genin, ninja start to do their bit for their village's economy – being sent on missions that the village gets paid for. They are typically sent either on D-rank missions, which are the lowest rank and are almost entirely risk-free jobs of manual labor, or, very rarely, on C-rank missions, which are a cut above that and begin to verge on real "ninja" work – though they generally have a very low possibility of risk to the ninjas involved, especially since their Jonin level sensei often accompanies them. However, at one point, Konohagakure was shorthanded in upper-level ninja because of the attack by Otogakure and Sunagakure, and has been forced to occasionally send Genin on higher-ranked missions.
Chunin
Main article: Chunin Chunin (中忍, Chûnin; Literally meaning "Middle Ninja", Meaning (Viz) "Journeyman Ninja") are ninja who are qualified to watch over and guide other ninja. Chunin have reached a level of maturity that primarily consists of leadership skills and tactical prowess. This is because the Genin who don't have the skills to become Chunin are weeded out in testing. Some of them, like Iruka Umino and Mizuki, function as teachers and others, like Shikamaru Nara, serve as team leaders in charge of small teams who need to make decisions and utilize the skills of the shinobi under their command to the maximum effect. Chunin are typically sent on C-rank missions or B-rank missions. Sometimes, although, in times of peace, leaders like Shikamaru may become teachers at the Ninja Academy, as seen in the filler arcs.
Tokubetsu Jonin
Main article: Tokubetsu Jonin Tokubetsu Jonin (特別上忍, Tokubetsu Jōnin; Literally meaning "Special High Ninja"; sometimes known as Tokujō for short) are ninja who, rather than all-around Jonin training, have Jonin-level ability in a single area or skill, much like warrant officers of real-world militaries. They are elite specialists in their areas and are often assigned as subordinates to regular Jonin when their services are needed.
Jonin
Main article: Jonin Jonin (上忍, Jōnin; Literally meaning "High Ninja", Meaning (Viz) "Elite Ninja") are generally highly-experienced ninja with great individual skill who serve as military captains. They are often sent on A-rank missions, and experienced Jonin may even be sent on S-rank missions (which are considered to be the greatest difficulty). They may also carry out these missions alone. They are sometimes assigned as sensei for three-person teams of Genin. It is as of yet unknown what one has to undergo to become one. It is mentioned in the Naruto Anime Profiles databook that Jonin are appointed, however there was mention of a Jonin exam in the Kurama filler arc. It is known that most Jonin are generally able to use at least two types of elemental jutsu, some genjutsu, and above-average taijutsu skills.
S-class
Main article: S-class The Sannin (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no Sannin; Literally meaning "Legendary Three Ninja") is the title given to the members of Team Sarutobi, namely Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. The title was received after their battle with "Salamander" Hanzo of the Village Hidden in Rain, who after a long and intense fight which resulted in a stalemate, declared that he was impressed and would let them live if they would take on new titles as the Sannin of Konoha. The Sannin are widely regarded for their great skill and power, each on the level of a Kage in their own right. Their name is known in countries all across the world. Tsunade is the only surviving sannin, Jiraiya and Orochimaru having been killed by Pein and Sasuke/Itachi respectively.
Kage
Main article: Kage A Kage (影, Kage; Literally meaning "Shadow") is the leader of one of the five most powerful Hidden Villages and generally are also the most powerful ninja in their respective villages.
The Kage stand equally with the rulers of their countries, oversee the activities of their villages, and are the leaders of ninja society. They typically are the ones who send the ninja teams out on their missions and make the decisions regarding the safety of the village.
Ninja Jobs
ANBU
Main article: ANBU The ANBU (暗部, ANBU; Viz "Black Ops", English TV "ANBU Black Ops"; Literally meaning "Dark Side") is actually short for ANsatsu Senjutsu Tokushu BUtai (暗殺戦術特殊部隊, Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai; Literally meaning "Special Assassination and Tactical Squad"). The name is a form of contraction, similar to English acronyms like SWAT, where the two kanji used to abbreviate the group's full name constitute an actual word on their own.
Hunter-nin
Main article: Hunter-nin Hunter-nin (追い忍, Oinin; literally "Chasing Ninja", English TV "Tracker Ninja") are a special team within Kirigakure's ANBU, given the specific duty of hunting down missing-nin. They kill their target, taking the head as proof, and then completely dispose of the body by using various methods, such as cremation or the summoning of wild carrion crows to devour the corpse. This is done in order to make sure the village secrets which a ninja's body holds -- such as chakra types, herbs eaten, ninjutsu, special medicine, and kekkei genkai -- will not be revealed to outsiders.
Medical-nin
Main article: Medical-nin Medical-Nin (医療忍, iryō-nin) are ninja who specialize in medical treatment and use of medical-oriented jutsu to heal others. Becoming a medic-nin requires high intelligence and excellent chakra control. If a medic-nin is trained to avoid getting injured in any way, for the reason that if they are injured, then there would be nobody to heal the others. If they are forced into combat, they make use of their chakra control to enhance their taijutsu skills. Medic-nins occompany other ninja on high ranking missions to increase the survival rate of the squad.
