This ability allows Karin to find, sense, and track individuals through their chakra over vast range that exceeds ten kilometres. This is done by focusing and opening the mind's eye, though Karin has it active often. The ability extends to telling when a person is lying from the fluctuations in a person's chakra made from dishonest emotions or detecting if someone, including herself, is under a genjutsu. Also by focusing on a particular chakra, Karin can perceive its location and movement with great detail.
The name comes from the word Kagura (神楽, divine entertainment), which is a type of Japanese theatrical dance, considered by some to have been developed by the goddess Ame-no-Uzume. Its roots lie in certain kinds of divination and pacification of the spirits.
Karin uses this technique as her ultimate jutsu in Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 3, in which she throws a smoke bomb that engulfs both her and her opponent in a pitch-black cloud where neither one of them can see. She then locates her opponent with this technique and throws a kunai with a string of explosive tags attached to it, defeating her opponent in the explosion. When Karin uses this on Sasuke, her demeanour changes and after the explosion she swoons over him.
