Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara) was a legendary shinobi, a former leader of the Uchiha clan and one of the main antagonists of the series. After allying with his rival, Hashirama Senju, their two clans founded Konohagakure to achieve peace in the world.[6] He eventually came to an impasse with Hashirama, and defected from the village. He was later seemingly killed by his rival at the battle at the Valley of the End, but in fact survived and went into hiding, continuing his own plans to end world conflict. Unable to complete it in his natural life, he entrusted his knowledge and plans to Obito Uchiha after his passing.

Madara meeting Hashirama.

Growing up during the Warring States Period, Madara was one of five sons born to Tajima Uchiha. However, three of Madara's brothers died at the hands of the Senju, leaving him and his younger brother Izuna. Alongside Izuna, Madara was considered the most gifted members of the Uchiha and even by his clan's standards, Madara's chakra was especially strong.[7] Madara often competed with Izuna as training.[8] As a child, Madara first met Hashirama Senju and became rivals at skipping stones. With their first meeting cut short after discovering the body of a member of the Hagoromo clan, the two would later meet again and Madara questioned Hashirama revealed that his brother had been killed in battle. Telling Hashirama that he himself once had four brothers, the pair discussed the prospect of peace for the world. It was here that Madara was finally able to skip his rock to the other side of the river.[9] As they continued meeting, Madara's friendship with Hashirama increased, along with their rivalry.[10] The two would meet by the riverbank, where they would spar and talk about changing the future. On one such occasion, Hashirama brought up the prospect of creating a village where children would not be sent to war and could grow up to be strong warriors.[11]

These meetings ultimately ended as both Madara's father Tajima and Hashirama's father Butsuma soon found out about the two boys meeting and planned an ambush against the other's son. However, the two boys warned one another in time, and as they fled, their fathers and brothers confront one another.[12] After the initial scuffle, Madara and Hashirama intervened, getting between their respective families. Madara, realising that he had to chose between Hashirama and their dream or his family, regretfully decided to end his friendship with the young Senju, determined to protect his brother Izuna. Hashirama tried to make Madara reconsider, but Madara refused to let go of his anger for the Senju. He announced his full name to Hashirama, awakening his Sharingan.[13]

From then on, Madara would constantly battle Hashirama with the intent of erasing him from his past.[14] Eventually, he and Izuna awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. With their newly obtained power, the two brothers became the head of the clan, with Madara becoming its leader.[15] Sometime afterwards, Madara and Izuna fought Hashirama and Tobirama, where Izuna was mortally wounded by Tobirama. Madara retreated and Izuna died from his wounds but left Madara his eyes, granting him the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.[16] Madara later confronted Hashirama again with his new found ocular prowess, but nonetheless, after a day-long battle, he was finally defeated. Noting that he could not trust them any more, Madara told Hashirama that the only way to regain this trust was to either kill himself or his brother.[16] When Hashirama resolved to kill himself, Madara stopped him, noting his courage and accepted the truce.[17]

Senju & Uchiha truce

Konohagakure is formed.

The Senju, the Uchiha, and all the clans they had conquered came together to form the ninja village Madara and Hashirama once dreamed of together.[18] Ultimately, it was Madara who named the village Konohagakure. Madara's relationship with Hashirama steadily became much like from their childhood, sharing their ideas and hopes. When Hashirama told Madara about the plans for the village leader, who would be known as the Hokage, he wished to give the title of Hokage to Madara. Tobirama, however, noted that this should be a democratic decision and not a unilateral one, citing that in any case, the villagers would never accept Madara as such.[19] Madara, who was spying on the Senju siblings, began to grow uneasy from this lack of trust, doubting the worth of this village.[20] During the time he was a shinobi of Konohagakure, Madara approached and Ōnoki where he informed them that despite the alliance that Iwagakure had made with Konoha, his village was to remain the dominant power and that from that point on, they would obey Konoha.[21] Afterwards, Madara fought and defeated them when they engaged him in battle.[22]

Later, Hashirama would instead be elected as Hokage and at the Naka Shrine, Hashirama expressed his wish that Madara inherit the title of Second Hokage once the villagers started seeing him in another light, however, Madara noted that Tobirama would more than likely inherit that title, and that when he did, it would not bode well for the Uchiha.[23] Madara's breaking point, however, came after deciphering the tablet beneath the Naka Shrine and discovering the true origins of all shinobi, which left him greatly in despair upon realising mankind became cursed to repeat history.[24] Later meeting in the Naka Shrine for their last civil meeting, Madara told Hashirama his intent on leaving the village and he had a plan to make his dream become a reality, falling victim to the Curse of Hatred once again.[25] Hashirama tried to convince Madara to let him help his childhood friend, but Madara scoffed at Hashirama's attempt to follow him, saying that no one can get behind him.[26]

Madara with the Nine-Tails battling Hashirama

Abandoned by his clan, Madara left the village, sought out Kurama, and subdued it using his Sharingan.[27][28] He later returned in order to challenge Hashirama in battle, fighting at the site that would later be called the Valley of the End.[29][30] The battle waged well into the night, leaving both shinobi battered and exhausted and Madara stripped of his control over Kurama.[31] With both of them too weak to use their strongest techniques anymore, they made one final clash, leaving Madara the one standing and looking down over Hashirama in victory.[32] However, due to not having enough chakra to access his Sharingan, Madara couldn't tell that the defeated Hashirama was actually a clone, and was shocked to find the real Hashirama standing behind him and stabbing him through the chest.[33] Quickly losing consciousness, Madara vowed that one day Konohagakure would be shrouded in darkness, and then died from his wound.[34] News of Madara's death spread fast and his body was highly sought after. Knowing how valuable Madara's very body would be to any ninja, his corpse was hidden from the world. Unbeknownst to anyone, Madara had a contingency plan prepared; he set the technique Izanagi to go off some time after his demise, using up his right eye's power to cancel his death. He left a copy in place of his real body, a truth that was never discovered.

Madara went into hiding and used Hashirama's cells, from a piece of flesh he managed to bite off during their battle, and transplanted them into his wounds.[35] Though nothing happened at first, near the end of his natural lifespan, he awakened the Rinnegan, restoring his right eye's former power and sight in the process.[35] He also acquired the Wood Release kekkei genkai,[36][37] and with both Senju and Uchiha DNA — the ability to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.[35] He later transplanted his Rinnegan into Nagato without the young boy knowing,[35] and replaced his left eye with a spare Sharingan.[38] Years later, Madara's advanced age eventually reduced him to using the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path as a life support system, constantly being supplied chakra by it or else he would die immediately.[39] Also from the stolen cells of Hashirama, Madara used the statue to cultivate a mindless living clone of Hashirama which also resulted in growing the White Zetsu Army.[35][39]

Madara saves Obito

An elderly Madara speaking with Obito.

During the Third Shinobi World War, he saved Obito Uchiha after the battle of Kannabi Bridge, using artificial mass to replace the destroyed half of Obito's body.[39] During the procedure, Madara also placed the Puppet-Master Seal on Obito.[40] After formally introducing himself, Madara told Obito that he would have to repay his debt to him slowly.[38] Madara then left two Zetsu clones with the task of guarding Obito and helping him with his rehabilitation, so he could be useful to him by the time he woke up.[41] Deciding that Obito's pure heart once corrupted would make him an ideal pawn to help carry out his plans, Madara was able to seal the Three-Tails into Obito's love interest Rin Nohara. He then instigated a situation that would kill Rin in front of Obito, driving the younger Uchiha into desperate despair, and as a result causing the boy to openly help Madara.[42] After Obito returned to him as he had predicted, Madara, now certain that Obito was sincere, carried him into a genjutsu and told him about the Sage of the Six Paths and the Ten-Tails.[43] He then explained how he had awakened the Rinnegan, gained access to the empty shell of the Ten-Tails, and cultivated Hashirama's cells.[44][45][46][47] He would go on to teach him among other things various kinjutsu, advanced Uchiha techniques, the Yin–Yang Release, and the power of the Rinnegan. Before passing, Madara also implanted Black Zetsu into a Zetsu clone by pouring what he assumed was his will and also left part of his will in the chakra receiver which extends from the statue's navel. With that, Madara disconnected himself from the statue and, with his dying breath, told Obito to go and, until the time he was revived, he was to act under his name.[48]

Fulfilling the legendary Uchiha's request, Obito, now known as "Tobi", began operating under his name while concealing his face. Due to his first-hand knowledge of Madara's actions and deeds, other shinobi were led to believe he was in fact the legendary ninja himself. However, thanks to researching the matter with Orochimaru, Kabuto Yakushi learned the truth behind Madara's time after the Valley of the End and actual death, reincarnating the ninja to blackmail Tobi into letting him aid him during the Fourth Great Shinobi World War where Kabuto partly exposed Tobi's deception.[49]

Personality

File:Madara Rage.jpg

The initial dynamics between Madara and Hashirama when they were children.

As a child, Madara was kind, confident, proud, competitive, and wanted to perfect everything he did.[50] He was prone to angry outbursts when he got annoyed. Despite this, he was apologetic and highly sensitive to his surroundings, as revealed when he comically stated that he was not able to urinate with others standing behind him, and when he constantly tried to comfort Hashirama when he thought he hurt his feelings. According to a young Hashirama Senju, Madara Uchiha has a god complex, even as a child.[51] Due to the harsh nature of the times they lived in, Madara believed that the only way to survive in the shinobi world was to make allies with your enemies, an ideal shared by his rival, whom eventually became his close friend and ally.[52] Madara and Hashirama came to care about each other over their own clans going as far as to purposely leak information to each other about a trap their respective clans laid out.[13][53]

Madara also possessed tremendous love for his younger brother Izuna, which according to Hashirama, was greater than Itachi Uchiha's love for Sasuke.[54] As his other three brothers died in battle with the Senju clan, Madara became highly protective of Izuna,[55] becoming very close to him.[8] According to Hashirama, despite living in such harsh times, Madara never lost his kind, gentle, and caring nature until he lost Izuna. After Izuna's death from the constant battles between the Uchiha and Senju clans, Madara became bitter and vengeful toward the Senju, causing him to embrace his clan's Curse of Hatred.[56] Madara's corruption damaged his relationship with Hashirama, leading him to oppose the truce offered to him because his rival still had a sibling while Madara had lost all of his. Madara has a deep sense of personal honour as, prior to their betrayal of him, he wanted to protect the Uchiha clan from the possibility of oppression by the Senju.[57] This honour is also evident in showing respect for against capable fighters, acknowledging Might Guy's prowess by attempting to kill him rather let him die a slow death from the after-effects of unleashing all the Eight Gates.[58]

For a brief time as an adult, Madara began to believe in the old ideals from childhood, stopping Hashirama from killing himself after feeling remorse, which led to Madara accepting Hashirama's truce which resulting in the two repairing their friendship and the founding of Konoha.[59] He also lamented what he thought was his fault for failing to protect his siblings and tried to believe in the ideal of everyone of the village being his family.[60] However, Madara became distant after the lack of trust from Tobirama and much of the village, ultimately feeling that once Hashirama was selected to be Hokage instead of him, the Uchiha would slowly be overshadowed by the Senju. After using his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan to further decipher the Uchiha Stone Monument, Madara felt hopeless, because he came to believe humans were cursed to fight each other.[61] After learning this Madara claimed that he set the Eye of the Moon Plan in motion to save humanity from its curse.[62] Madara's feelings of rivalry and hatred towards Hashirama soon resurfaced, going as far as to forbid anyone from mentioning that name in front of him.[21] He also became angrily offended when Hashirama mentioned the words "our brothers".[63] Despite the fact Hashirama meant the entire Senju and Uchiha clans and the villagers of Konoha, Madara was instead reminded of Izuna.

File:Madara's arrogance.png

Madara showing his disdain for "weak" opponents.

As he grew older, Madara became very disciplined. Madara was shown to be very collected as he simply brushed off the fact that he failed to revive himself and prepared to use his next plan.[64] Even when outnumbered, he remains composed, adaptable, and calculating, quickly able to adjust to new developments and change his battle tactics.[65] He can also be spiteful, and belittling of others.[66] Despite his pride and confidence in his immense power, Madara is shown to be highly vigilant, regardless of the situation.[22][67][68] He also embedded chakra receivers into Obito's artificial body as a fail safe to have himself revived.[69] At the same time, he admitted that since obtaining Hashirama's healing powers, Madara himself had gotten somewhat carefree in his own approach.[70] He was also quick to reprimand others for recklessness or stupidity.[67][71] Conversely, he lamented that he would have taught Hashirama how to resurrect himself if he had known how much weaker the modern day shinobi would be compared to them.[72] Despite the pride he has in his own abilities, he openly admitted that Hashirama is the only person who is capable of stopping him.[73]

Despite his aggressiveness, Madara was capable of showing mercy, as he refused to fight against severely wounded opponents[74] and those he views as "children", such as Ōnoki.[75] He even commented to the five Kage, after being interrupted from killing them with his final Susanoo, that using such powerful techniques more than once in a battle would be disgraceful.[76] Madara is however at the same time something of a show off, using extremely powerful techniques in rapid succession, all the while, expressing satisfaction to having done it. Likewise, Madara had no remorse forcing Obito to use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique despite the fact it would result in the latter's death.[77] At the same time, Madara was an honest individual and isn't above praising the abilities of others,[78][79] and is also willing to admit when he is wrong as after Tsunade tag-teamed him with A, he admitted she was not weak at all.[71]

Madara had been described as being hostile and aggressive by nature as well as being very ambitious, the latter of which was seen during his rise to the position of clan leader[15][80][81] as well as his desire to make his clan superior out of what Tobi claimed was Madara's great love for them.[82] According to Sage of Six Paths, Madara desired both his power and that of his mother.[83] Madara also viewed the tailed beasts as nothing more than masses of energy and tools to those with blessed eyes as the creatures are lacking in intelligence and sapience to think for themselves and as such, need to be "guided".[28] Madara also believed power is something tangible that can be passed down through generations and that the will of a dead person cannot be inherited, as it is not tangible.[84] He also thought that humanity can't change from what it was in the past and believes that as such, mankind would be better served sleeping peacefully in an Infinite Tsukuyomi.[85] Madara was also shown to hold a grudge against Tobirama as shown when he defeated him after being reincarnated stating he had been looking forward to defeating him, as he was the one who killed Izuna.[86] Following his fears of the Senju controlling Konohagakure, Madara became treacherous by nature as, after the alliance with Iwagakure was made, he immediately betrayed and Ōnoki, expecting them to follow Konohagakure's lead from then on, displaying a sense of loyalty to his village in his own way.[21]

Madara has a macabre sense of humour, as shown when he created multiple wood clones and surrounded each of the five Kage with five clones — thereby reversing the original five vs. one situation — and asked if they preferred the clones to use Susanoo or not.[87] Also, when asked by Naruto what had happened to the Kage, he simply stated that they were "not doing so well.",[88] as well as describing the Ten-Tails' enormous and destructive attack as a form of fun.[89] He even referred to satellites created by his multiple Chibaku Tensei variation as raindrops.[90] He also has a habit of referring to fighting as 'dancing'.[22][91] He has a very jaded and emotionless approach towards the tragedies of war, to the point of light-heartedly joking about them, as seen from his cheer at having "destroyed the alliance's mind", which further demonstrates his knack for reversing the situations he finds himself in.[92] He also purposely let himself get hit by Ōnoki's attack in order to show Hashirama's face on his chest to lower the morale of the Kage, but he was also very disappointed that it had the exact opposite effect.[93]

File:Insane Madara.png

Madara's reaction after sensing Hashirama's presence.

He is also a battle-loving individual, delighting in the prospect of a true challenge and commenting that he had not enjoyed this view in a long time while surveying the battlefield during the Fourth Shinobi World War. To ensure his own enjoyment, he will not use more power than he has to in order to drag on fights.[94] Relating to this, Madara enjoys a challenging fight and said that anything less than the five Kage against him would be inadequate; and in stopping Hashirama Senju from intervening with trying to defeat Obito Uchiha as the Ten-Tails jinchūriki from completing the Eye of the Moon Plan; simply to satisfy his love for battle.[95][96] Madara's love for battle at times even seems masochistic, licking his own blood and stopping to recognise the pain in his body to further revel in the excitement of battle.[97] Controversially, Madara is above giving any enemies the same advantage he has as he didn't force Obito to revive Hashirama as well as himself despite knowing full well Hashirama would not be a match for him without being resurrected.

Madara is also very fearless when it comes to battle, shown in his ready assault of an entire platoon of shinobi upon being attacked, despite being severely outnumbered[98] and in his ready to assault Hashirama's Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands despite it being several times larger than his own weapon.[99] Due to the times he lived in, Madara believes it is natural for shinobi to spend their entire lives in battle.[85] Despite his love of battle, Madara never loses his composure to excitement or fear in any of his battle situations with the exceptions being his excitement upon sensing Hashirama's chakra, showing a malicious smile with a bloodthirsty look on his face as well as in his resurrection.[100][101] Madara was also shown to act somewhat like a child when Hashirama showed up to the battlefield briefly, suggesting Hashirama has somewhat of a positive impact on Madara's personality despite Madara's cruel and somewhat dark nature.[102] Madara is also shown to have a superiority complex as shown in his disgust when being forced to fight a battle he has become bored of, despite his overall love for battle.[103]

After his many decades in hiding, Madara seemed to become very bitter and disillusioned about the current reality, which he regards as worthless, noticing that in this world someone always must be the "loser" for there to be a "winner", likely referring to his constant streak of failures against Hashirama. This is what motivated him to wish to change the world via the Eye of the Moon Plan. His belief in this goal is so great, he had resolved to succeed at all costs and upon his revival, was not hesitant at all to kill anyone who threatens that plan, even his own clansman along with seeing anything or anyone related to the plan as himself. Madara's dedication to this plan even exceeds his love for battle as he rushed to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi after regaining both of his eyes and created four Limbo shadows and multiple Chibaku Tensei to stall his enemies, rather than to enjoy himself.

Appearance

File:Madara enfant.PNG

Madara as a child.

Madara was a light-skinned man with spiky, black hair that had a slight, blue tint to it. In his childhood, his hair was chin-length that parted to frame the sides of his face. He wore the standard Uchiha clan outfit: a black shirt with a high-collar left slightly open and the clan's crest on its back, and blue pants with bandages around his shins. Around his waist, he had a sash that held a sack, presumably containing his ninja tools.[8] Later, his sash was replaced by a belt, adorned with pouches and various weapons. He also wore another sash strapped across his shoulders which he used to hold his swords.[104]

File:Madara Uchiha.png

By adulthood, Madara grew tall and fit with his hair reaching waist-length and shoulder-length bangs framing the sides of his face, covering most of his right eye. Although still relatively young, more prominent creases had developed under each of his eyes. Madara's future attires retained the shin bandages and Uchiha crest along with the traditional Uchiha combat outfit, consisting of a black high-collared, long sleeve mantle that splits down the lower half. Around his waist he wears a simple, light-brown obi and a belt.[105] After accepting Hashirama's truce, his attire consisting of maroon armour with numerous metal plates, forming protective guards along his chest, waist, shoulders and thighs. This clothing under the armour was a indigo long-sleeved shirt with a knee-length mantle, pants, open-toed boots, gloves. He also wore his village's forehead protector on an indigo headband,[18][106] but this was discarded upon his defection.[107] During battle, he often carried an orange-brown war fan which had a long black chain running up it. Prior to his departure from Konoha, he switched back to his traditional clan attire, in addition to a blue armoured chest plate and still sported his forehead protector briefly. The anime also shows him wearing a metal belt, as well as a brown leather sash to hold some of his other weapons, and a pair of belt sashes to hold two of his swords.

File:Old Madara.png

Madara in his old age.

In his old age, Madara became extremely worn and emaciated, with his hair turned thin and white. He wore a simple black outfit, and had three thick chords running from his spine, to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to sustain his life, and used his kama as a makeshift cane. He was also missing his eyes, having transplanted them to Nagato, and replaced his left one with a Sharingan.[108][109] When Madara was reincarnated during the Fourth Shinobi World War, in addition to the generic effect of gaining grey sclerae and minor cracks about his being, his body's youth was restored with the addition of a pale replica of Hashirama's face on the Uchiha's left pectoral region.[110] After truly reviving himself through Obito, Madara's cracks disappeared, showing his complete restoration.[111] However, he is missing his eyes, due to having given them to Nagato (and later taken by Obito), thus rendering him blind.[112] Upon absorbing Hashirama's senjutsu chakra, Hashirama's face on Madara's chest gained its Sage Mode markings.[113] After an initial scuffle against the tailed beasts, Madara lost his right arm up to the bicep, quickly replacing it with a pale white arm of a Zetsu clone while at the same time regaining his right eye retrieved by the Zetsu clone.[114]

File:Rikudo Madara close.png

Madara as the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.

After becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Madara's body undergoes a drastic transformation, obtaining its final transformation immediately. In this form, his hair turns dark red-coloured and his skin grey (much like Hagoromo after becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki), and he becomes enveloped by a cloak of chakra that stabilises into physical clothing: a full-bodied black garment with black pants, gloves and boots. Over this, Madara wears a flowing white robe with six magatama markings across his chest and the familiar pattern of a Rinnegan and nine magatama markings in rows of three across the back. He also grows a horn-like protrusion out the left temple that overlaps his forehead akin to a protector with an upward-curve on the right temple and a single horn spike above his left eye, giving him an overall appearance very similar to that of the Sage of the Six Paths. After absorbing the Shinju's tree form, Madara obtained a black-tomoe pattern around his sleeve cuffs and the rim of his robe.

During his battle against Sasuke Uchiha and Naruto Uzumaki, Madara was able to steal Kakashi Hatake's left Sharingan, gaining a complete set of eyes. Shortly after doing this, Madara regained both of his true eyes and flew close to the moon, he developed a third eye on on his forehead, snapping off his horn to reveal it. Like Kaguya's, its eyelids part vertically and is red in colour, consisting of a ripple-pattern with three black tomoe circling the pupil in the first three ripples.

Abilities

Hashirama and Madara clash

Madara clashing with Hashirama.

Madara was recognised as one of the most gifted shinobi in history and the most powerful shinobi that the Uchiha clan ever produced. His power was so terrifying that Tobi was able to drag the entire world into war by pretending to be Madara.[115][116] Madara was able to compete against Hashirama Senju, who was considered as the strongest shinobi during his time. This showed that Madara was also one of the strongest shinobi of his era. Even as a young child and by his battle-adept clan's standards, Madara was recognised as a very skilled prodigy, capable of killing several powerful adult shinobi of the Senju clan; he had yet to awaken his Sharingan.[55] By the Fourth Shinobi World War, he wiped out most of the Fourth Division of the Allied Forces and only the combined efforts of the Five Kage could challenge him; they were still defeated easily despite Madara imposing multiple restrictions on himself.[88] After his full revival he quickly defeated all nine tailed beasts, including two perfect jinchūriki, and sealed them with ease.[117]

Chakra

Madara was noted to have been born with an extremely powerful chakra, even by Uchiha standards.[104] Part of his chakra's potent nature stemmed from inheriting the chakra of his ancestor, Indra.[118] Kurama noted that Madara's chakra was far more sinister than his own.[119] From a single glare, Madara could deter most opponents from fighting.[22] His reserves were immense as he fought for twenty-four hours, before he collapsed due to exhaustion from using chakra intensive techniques like Susanoo.[120]

He could perform extremely chakra-taxing feats such as using Susanoo whilst maintaining complete control over Kurama without showing any signs of exertion.[121] Madara also had a high level of chakra control, as he could perform large-scale techniques with only a single hand seal. After infusing Hashirama's DNA, his reserves increased, as even in his weakened elderly age, he was able to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path from its cage in the moon.[45] His reserves were also great enough to easily control the senjutsu chakra he stole from Hashirama.[122]

Sensory Perception

Madara was an adept sensor type shinobi, having shown a keen awareness to his surroundings since childhood.[123] He could detect and recognise chakra signatures from great distances,[100] and could likewise effectively track down targets.[113] He could compensate for blindness by sensing each individual target, perceiving a person's movements, and detecting any changes or build-up in their chakra. From this ability, and in conjunction with his quick reflexes, he could effectively dodge enemy attacks whilst blind. His sensory skills were refined enough to determine a person's clan and nature of their kekkei genkai, and even differentiate species.[124]

Taijutsu

An unarmed Madara overwhelms the Allied Shinobi.

Madara had been a skilled taijutsu fighter since childhood.[125] As an adult, he was capable of easily fending off and disarming hundreds of enemies surrounding him. He also demonstrated considerable dexterity and coordination, able to contort and fluidly move about to dodge and strike simultaneously with dangerous accuracy or constantly rotate his position to strike from all angles. Madara's raw strength was shown when he repelled a man twice his size several feet away with a single strike, knocking down a group of shinobi in the process[126] and nonchalantly lift and toss several people. Likewise, he was very durable, able to take a strong Wind Release attack unfazed.[65] Madara also showed considerable pain tolerance, as he did not flinch after having his arm stabbed, or even amputated.[127] Madara's speed, reflexes and agility enabled him to quickly cover large distances that most enemy shinobi could not react to. In battle, he could effectively dodge the high-speed attacks of Gaara's sand, A's close-range Lightning Release Armour-clad assault, and later the blindsided point-blank assault of Tobirama's Flying Thunder God Slash.[128][129] Even when blind, he could still battle effectively, showing his keen senses.

Ninjutsu

Madara was well-versed in a variety of ninjutsu styles, including several kinjutsu and all his clan's techniques.[130] With juinjutsu, he could quickly subdue a tailed beast or manipulate the actions of a person.[40] His fūinjutsu skills could easily seal a creature as powerful as the Ten-Tails into a person as a jinchūriki.[131] With his barrier ninjutsu skills, he could utilise flow chakra through his gunbai, to produce a large and powerful barrier.[132] His proficiency with the Summoning Technique made him one of two people who could summon a being as powerful as Kurama, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox.[133] He was able to merge with and hide within the environment.[134] He could levitate himself and fly about freely.[135] He could also combine two techniques to increase the scale and quantity of his attacks.[136] Similar to the Yamanaka clan, Madara could communicate telepathically.[137] He can use the Shadow Clone Technique with ease, in manner not seen by other users, namely having it be his replacement to his ensure that people thought he was killed, using it as a creative scapegoat.[138]

Bukijutsu

Madara had displayed since childhood, a versatile and skilful use of a wide range of weaponry, including shurikenjutsu and kenjutsu. He could use several different fighting patterns and styles,[14] and even different weapons in conjunction.[139] His arsenal included giant shuriken, a kama, chain with weights, a kusarigama, and hand-held shuriken.[140][141] When facing the Fourth Division, Madara skilfully used the weapons of his enemies, such as spears, naginata, and even bare broken blades, to quickly cut down his enemies. He could use his trademark gunbai as a mace, shield, flail,[141] with which he could slice through the giant roots of the Shinju's true form.[142] Madara also could use this weapon as a medium for certain techniques, such as one to absorb and return the force of an enemy attack.[143]

Nature Transformation

Katon Gōka Mekkyaku

Madara using Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation.

Madara was one of few known individuals able to use all five basic elements in ninjutsu. As an Uchiha, Madara had a natural affinity to Fire Release. He could use many different types of techniques, including his clan's rite of passage Great Fireball Technique. The greater shows of his Fire Release could incinerate forests, and they required the combined efforts of several Water Release users to repel.[144] For defence, Madara could expel chakra-infused ash, covering a wide area, that can both burn anyone and act as a smokescreen.[145] With Lightning Release, Madara could unleash powerful bolts of lightning from his hands.[146] In the anime, Madara could also use Wind Release, able to create powerful gusts with his gunbai to repel an entire platoon.[147]

File:Obito Rinne tensei.png

Madara was well-versed in Yin-Yang Release and its separate natures, even able to make use of his clan kinjutsu Izanagi.[148] Madara used Yin-Yang Release to amplify the Zetsu clones by applying Hashirama's cells through the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Additionally, Madara was capable of weaponising his Yin Release and combine it with senjutsu chakra.[149] Madara could also infuse his wil into objects. By imbuing his will into chakra receivers, he could telepathically manipulate them,[150] restricting or forcing the actions of any enemies they were embedded in.[151]

Naruto vs

Madara using the Wood Release: Wood Dragon Technique.

After his battle with Hashirama Senju at the Valley of the End, Madara acquired some of the First Hokage's cells, which he later infused into himself, and this granted him an advanced element known as the Wood Release, a simultaneous mixture of Earth and Water Release.[36][37] Madara had great knowledge and prowess in this kekkei genkai's various techniques, comparable to that of Hashirama himself.[152] Madara could create numerous massive trees or several wood clones which could overwhelm multiple opponents with their sheer numbers.[153] Madara could also create a large wood dragon to bind large, powerful targets like the tailed beasts and drain their chakra.[154] By using Hashirama's cells, Madara could produce roots from his body and connect them to a tailed beast, which granted him a limited control on the target, even if it was one as powerful as the Ten-Tails.[155] After he became the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, he showed the usage of another advanced element, the Storm Release, a mixture of lightning and water Release. With this nature transformation, he was able to exhale a stream of lightning able to cleanly slice through highly durable targets.[156]

Dōjutsu

Sharingan

Madara's Sharingan.

Madara first awakened his Sharingan as a child, after rejecting his friendship with Hashirama Senju.[157] While initially each eye had one tomoe, Madara quickly developed and mastered the Sharingan — a feat for which he received significant praise. He later demonstrated an especially great skill and power in its usage.[8] His mastery enabled him to keep his Sharingan activated for extended periods of time, with a minimal drain on his chakra. With it, he could use the dōjutsu's generic abilities. He could place targets under various genjutsu with eye-contact for effects such as paralysing his victims or relaying information.[158] He was an especially powerful genjutsu user, as he was able to subdue the Fourth Raikage with it,[159] who had previously countered another skilled Sharingan user.[160] Madara could see and differentiate chakra, as well as perceive minute details; he could also accurately predict actions from movements. The clarity of Madara's Sharingan was considerable as he was the only one able to discern solid clones from the original. Madara used these various abilities in conjunction with his combat skill to deadly effect, leaving his opponents with little time to react.[134]

With his Sharingan, Madara was able to control the tailed beasts[28] and could afterwards summon said beast, which he demonstrated with Kurama. He and his student, Obito Uchiha, were the only ones capable of perform these feats. However, whenever the target beast was sealed within a jinchūriki, Madara was unable to summon the beast.[161] He was also capable of using one of his clan's most powerful and forbidden techniques, Izanagi,[43] a technique which could temporarily alter reality, allowing the user to change any undesirable events around them into an illusion. As with many Sharingan-based techniques, the Izanagi can be implanted into one's Sharingan to trigger the technique even after the user has already died; Madara demonstrated such usage after his actual death, as opposed to merely negating a mortal wound.[162]

Mangekyō Sharingan

File:Madara's Initial Mangekyo.jpg

Madara's Mangekyō Sharingan.

Madara and his brother Izuna were known as the first Uchiha to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. Madara's Mangekyō form appeared as three large tomoe with circles at their tops overlapping each other at the bottoms and encircling the pupil. Later, with Madara's eyesight deteriorating from overuse,[163] a mortally wounded Izuna left Madara his eyes, with which gained the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. This restored Madara's eyesight and removed the strain associated with the Mangekyō Sharingan.[16] In this form, his Mangekyō design took on a combined appearance of Madara's and Izuna's; consisting of Madara's in the foreground with Izuna's thick straight lines stretching outward from just underneath. Madara's Mangekyō possesses a rare "Straight Tomoe" (直巴, Choku Tomoe), which granted him an even higher capability of reading and predicting his opponents movements, as well as fluidly acting accordingly. Madara had extensive knowledge of all Mangekyō Sharingan's powers and techniques derived from it, and able to quickly determine the damage caused from any said techniques.[164] Madara could also disperse Amaterasu.[165] His mastery over his Mangekyō Sharingan allowed him to use its techniques in unison with his Rinnegan or even without any eyes.[166]

File:Madara's Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.JPG

Madara's Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.

Having awakened the power of both his Mangekyō, he was one of a few able to use Susanoo. His Susanoo's defensive capabilities were notable, as just its ribcage could withstand Naruto Uzumaki's Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan,[167] and A's Lightning Oppression Horizontal Chop [168]. In its complete form, it could withstand the Ten-Tails' Tenpenchii undamaged.[169] Madara could instantly manifest individual segments of his Susanoo with varying size, with which he could launch or avoid sneak assaults. His mastery of Susanoo could produce a full manifestation, complete with a lower half. During which, Madara would hovered within Susanoo to grant him greater range of movement.[67] It could produce and wield up to four undulating blades. The blades could even be maintained and remotely controlled after being thrown for distance-attacks.[170] In addition, Susanoo could contribute to Madara's techniques by forming hand seals in unison him.[171] Madara could also use the Yasaka Magatama technique at a large and powerful scale[172] or launch a smaller size of the technique for quick attacks at close-range, leaving little time for enemies to react.

File:MadaraPSS.png

Madara's stabilised final Susanoo.

Madara's Susanoo's final form grew further into an enormous construct with its mouth obscured with several plates about its arms and a long flower cowl hiding its face that remotely resembles a tengu with armour. Susanoo's blades in this form could withstand the impact of a Tailed Beast Ball.[173] Madara's mastery enabled him to fully stabilise this form, at which point Susanoo had an outer armour and a tengu outfit. Its secondary pair of arms wielded sheathed katana.[174] In this form, a single swing from one of its katana was powerful enough to destroy the remnants of his meteors and bisect two mountains from a great distance.[175] It could also slice through Hashirama's Wood Release: Hotei Technique[176] According to Madara, the full power of his final stabilised Susanoo was comparable to that of the tailed beasts.[177] Furthermore, he stated that no one had lived to see it a second time. Madara could also shape Susanoo as an armour to clad a tailed beast.[178] This gave the beast protection from Hashirama's chakra suppression techniques. Madara could also combine the Tailed Beast Ball with his Susanoo's swords to give the swords increased power, and the Tailed Beast Ball cutting power. This attack was strong enough to wipe out mountains and five Rashōmon gates from great distances.[179] The increased defensive strength of Madara's final Susanoo's form could only be destroyed or pierced by powerful techniques like Hashirama's Sage Mode enhanced Top Transformed Buddha.[180]

For a short time during the Fourth Great Shinobi War, Madara stole Obito Uchiha's left eye from Kakashi Hatake. With it, Madara could activate its Mangekyō form; three stretched triangles around the pupil that each curve at the top around the pupil to form a circle, making it similar to a pinwheel. After temporarily wielding it, Madara could use Kamui. With this technique, he could teleport targets between the normal dimension and Kamui's Dimension.

Rinnegan

Madara's Rinnegan.

Several years after infusing himself with Hashirama's cells, a reincarnation of the Sage of Six Paths' son Asura, Asura's chakra combined with Indra's chakra reincarnated in Madara, which awakened the Rinnegan.[35] According to Obito, due to being the one to manifest this dōjutsu, only Madara could utilise the full power of both of his Rinnegan.[181] Due to its nature as a heightened form of his own eyes, Madara possessed the ability to switch back and forth between his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and his Rinnegan at will.[182] Amongst the various abilities granted by the Rinnegan, Madara could see chakra , even the tenketsu,[183] and potentially master any technique[184] — as seen from his rare accomplishment of mastering all five basic forms of nature transformation. He could also summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.[35] However, whilst he was a reincarnation he could not access his power over the Demonic Statue as his Rinnegan was artificial.[185]

File:Madara's Preta Path.png

With the Rinnegan, Madara could access the powers of the Six Paths Technique, such as the Preta Path to absorb chakra and any techniques derived from them, regardless of their power or complexity.[186] He could also use the power of the Deva Path to perform Chibaku Tensei, able to produce it on a massive scale in both sheer size and numbers.[187] With the Outer Path, Madara could perform the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique.[188] Also derived from the Outer Path, he could create chakra chains that could restrain and suppress the power of its targets, such as all nine of the tailed beasts at once,[189] ultimately sealing all tailed beasts within the Demonic Statue.[190] Madara could manifest chakra receivers and use them for various melee and supplementary purposes.[191] He could generate multiple corporeal invisible shadows able to aid Madara in battle. These shadows were powerful enough to knock down all nine tailed beasts.[192] Madara could also manipulate a target, keeping it suspended in air.[193] Madara also could combine the power of his Rinnegan with his Susanoo for other techniques.[194]

File:Third Rinnegan.png

Madara's third Rinnegan.

After regaining both his Rinnegan and becoming the Shinju's jinchūriki, Madara approached the moon. Doing so awakened a third Rinnegan on his forehead, much like that of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's third eye and the Shinju's single eye. Unlike his regular Rinnegan, this eye is red instead of purple and bears nine black tomoe.[195] With this eye, he could cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Intelligence

Madara displayed a high-level intellect, owing to his naturally keen instincts and years of experience, making him extremely strategic and analytical.[196] A very perceptive man, he could easily see through most deceptions, such as discerning a solid clone from the original. Very methodical and well-prepared, he could also set up safety measures in the event of his death and use it to his advantage. Likewise, Madara could accurately predict how others would act, and could then create elaborate plans that spanned decades. He also accounted for his own death by setting up various pawns through various manipulations, such as playing with and twisting their own ideals and feelings. Madara had enough foresight to ensure his future revival.[197] As an adept tactician, he could calmly create counter-strategies and adapt to most situations, using alternate means to achieve his objective should the need arise.[198] He was well-versed in psychological warfare, capable of exploiting an individual's beliefs and convictions into serving his own purposes.[199]

Madara had vast knowledge of the ninja world, and was able to immediately identify most forms of ninjutsu. He could otherwise to deduce the workings of unfamiliar techniques in order to counter them. His knowledge allowed him to break the contract of the Impure World Reincarnation Technique by exploiting its only weakness.[200] His knowledge extended far back in history, as he knew the existence and secrets of the Sage of the Six Paths. Madara was a highly capable teacher, having personally trained Obito into a highly powerful shinobi to the point people believed Obito was Madara himself.[201][202][203]

Body Modifications

File:Madara's Body Modifications.png

A replica of Hashirama's face on Madara's chest.

After his battle with Hashirama, Madara obtained a sample of the Hokage's DNA, which he infused onto himself, considerably augmenting Madara's physical parameters, along with other related benefits such regenerative powers, able to heal most injuries in seconds.[204] His modifications also allow him to as to survive unhindered without food or water. Should he lose any anatomy beyond his ability to heal, he can immediately replace it with the special material that make up the Zetsu clones and likewise seamlessly transplant organs like dōjutsu eyes into himself without needing any tools or recovery time.[205] When reincarnated, Kabuto modified Madara's body even further. As a result, Madara returned beyond his physical and combat prime, restoring his youth and health while retaining the abilities he developed in his old age.[206] He was also able to fight on-par with the reincarnated Hashirama Senju, with Hashirama requiring Naruto Uzumaki's help to neutralise him.[207] Upon witnessing Madara's inconceivable might and abilities, a shocked Gaara wondered if Madara had the power of a god.[208]

Despite his various improvements and new abilities compared to decades ago, Madara was unable to access the full potential of his enhanced body while a reincarnation. When Hashirama sealed Madara in his corpse vessel with the Sage Art: Gate of the Great God, it wasn't until after he was truly resurrected as a living being that his new-found strength could break free while simultaneously repelling Sai's Sealing Technique: Tiger Vision Staring Bullet.[209] He was also able to easily defeat and subdue his former rivals, Hashirama and Tobirama Senju. While his physical form and health remained rejuvenated after being revived, a drawback was that without his reincarnated state reflecting his former self, he no longer has eyes as he transplanted his actual ones prior to his death, rendering Madara blind, until he retrieved his right eye later and soon after his left.[205]

Jinchūriki Transformations

Main article: Jinchūriki Forms

Madara's jinchūriki transformation.

Unlike Obito, the previous jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails, Madara was able to retain his ability to think and gained instant control over the beast. Minato Namikaze notes that Madara's power in this form was greater than what was previously shown by Obito.[210] With it, Madara was able to fend off Might Guy while he was accessing the Seventh Gate and even withstand the one-hit-kill Daytime Tiger, a technique which previously overwhelmed Madara's Susanoo, at point-blank unscathed.[211] Madara is also still able to fight on par against Guy using all Eight Gates and survive the latter's Evening Elephant and Night Guy. His speed was also greatly increased, able to quickly counter Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique while in Sage Mode and simultaneously stop Kakashi Hatake's attempt at using Kamui.[212] Madara's regenerative powers and durability are also greatly enhanced, able to survive the left side of his torso being obliterated[213] or being bisected[214] and soon after completely restore himself. With his immense regenerative powers, Madara claimed he had achieved complete immortality.[215]

In this form, Madara also produced the Truth-Seeking Balls; ten dark orbs comprised of at least four nature transformations more advanced than a kekkei tōta, and imbued with natural energy, which generally floated behind him in a halo-like formation.[215][216][217] The chakra is highly malleable, able to be shaped into various forms for different uses, such as a barriers, protective orbs, and most commonly, a staff with an crescent shaped curve. With his complete control of the Ten-Tails' power, Madara could also apply the Yin–Yang Release to nullify all ninjutsu it comes in contact with. Likewise, with it he can easily smash through the highly durable body of a Sage Mode user. During his battle against the Might Guy, Madara's enemies managed to deprive Madara of nine orbs, limiting Madara's use for this power. After awakening a third eye akin to the Shinju's, he was able to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi through it. Following this, Madara could then assimilate his victims of the genjutsu into the God: Nativity of a World of Trees technique.

Other Skills

Along with the three main ninja skills, Madara is very versatile with proficiency in several other areas. He is still capable of absorbing chakra without his Rinnegan, even passively absorb Hashirama's accumulated senjutsu chakra to replicate the Sage Mode power.[113] Likewise, Madara has considerable knowledge and understanding of senjutsu, able to perfectly access the enhanced form without adverse effects.[122] Madara's senjutsu-enhancements increased his endurance to withstand the assault of all nine tailed beasts, even quickly return to his feet after their unified attack (albeit the latter while protected by his Susanoo). With his skill in this art, he is able to greatly augment his nature transformation.[218]

Madara is also an adept researcher, having experimented and cultivated a mindless clone flower through the Demonic Statue of Outer Path and his long research of Hashirama's cells which was later used to grow thousands of Zetsu clones. Using this vegetation, he was able to create artificial body parts and a life-support system to extend his life by absorbing chakra from the Demonic Statue.[219] He also has considerable medical skills, able to effectively transplant dōjutsu eyes and treated a severely injured body by replacing the destroyed portions with the artificial matter.[220][221] He can apply his knowledge of human anatomy in battle, piercing his opponents' tenketsu to debilitate mobility and impeding the moulding of chakra.[222]

Part II

Confining the Jinchūriki Arc

Madara Reanimated

The contents of the sixth coffin.

As Tobi prepared to wage war on the Allied Shinobi Forces, he was approached by Kabuto Yakushi, a former associate of Akatsuki. Kabuto requested that he be allowed to assist with the war-effort, under the condition that Tobi turn Sasuke Uchiha over to him at the end of the war. He then summoned five recently deceased Akatsuki members as proof that he could bolster Akatsuki's forces using reincarnated shinobi. While Tobi initially decided to turn down Kabuto's offer, the crafty medical-nin produced a mysterious sixth coffin, revealed to contain the real Madara Uchiha,[223] which proved sufficient blackmail to force Tobi's consent.[49]

Shinobi World War Arc

Madara arrives on the battlefield with Mū.

Frustrated when a reincarnated Nagato is sealed by the reincarnated and recently freed Itachi Uchiha, Kabuto finds himself forced to use his trump card. But because his only available reincarnated pawn, , was reduced to half strength, it took much longer than normal to complete the summoning of Madara, costing Kabuto several more reincarnations that are also sealed or otherwise released. Once the summoning is completed, Madara forcefully removes his coffin's lid before voicing his assumption that Nagato had finally used the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to bring him back from the dead, Mū corrects Madara, explaining that Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation had been used instead. Somewhat shocked by the manner of his revival, the two confront the Fourth Division. Upon noticing the forehead protectors of the allied army, Madara asks who is responsible for the Impure World Reincarnation. However, as Mū does not know, Kabuto takes full control and, speaking through him, identifies himself as Tobi's assistant before informing Madara that he had been restored to an extent beyond even his prime. Finding it rather dreary to be spoken to through a pawn, Madara questions Kabuto with what he knew of his prime but admitting his ignorance, Kabuto requests a demonstration.

File:Madara's Susanoo fights the Fourth Division.png

Madara unleashes his Susanoo.

Given free reign, Madara begins his assault on the spectating Fourth Division, Gaara, Ōnoki and Naruto's shadow clone. Madara uses the Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation technique, which takes the combined efforts of several shinobi to extinguish. Obscured by the resulting steam as he attacks them directly, he commandeers a sword and proceeds to tear through their ranks. As Naruto attacks Madara from above while Ōnoki raises the ground below him, sending him on a collision course, Madara activates his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and uses Susanoo to shield himself from harm. After Gaara uses lightened sand to separate Madara from his protection and to pull him into the path of an oncoming Rasenshuriken, he activates his Rinnegan and uses the Preta Path's ability to absorb the attack. When Kabuto tries to take credit for the improvements to Madara's powers, Madara remarks that he shouldn't get the wrong idea, as they weren't his creation. Together with Susanoo, he then forms three hand seals and pulls an enormous meteorite down from the atmosphere, directing it towards the battlefield.

Unconcerned by the prospect of destroying himself and Mū, aware that they'll both reform afterwards, Madara recognises Ōnoki as he flew towards the meteorite in an attempt to lighten it and stop its descent. Congratulating his and Gaara's successful efforts, Madara questions Ōnoki as to how he would deal with a second one as another meteorite collides with the first, overwhelming Ōnoki and killing the majority of the Fourth Division. After reforming, Madara remarks that he hadn't enjoyed a view such as this in a long time, as he stands amidst the rubble left in the wake of the impact.

File:Madara using Wood Release.png

Madara using the Wood Release.

After reforming, Kabuto informs Madara that he theorised that he had obtained a portion of Hashirama Senju during their confrontation, despite losing to him. Madara then proceeds to check underneath his shirt, after which he complements Kabuto on his preparation, before asking if he knew of their plan. Notified of Kabuto's uncertainty that the "fake" will act accordingly, Madara attempted to summon the Nine-Tails but is unable to do so as it was still sealed within Naruto. Learning that Naruto is from the same clan as Mito Uzumaki, he opted to attack using Nativity of a World of Trees instead of pursuing the real jinchūriki, yet this is countered by the Nine-Tails-empowered Naruto who destroyed the opposing forest, to which Madara commends him.

Lamenting that he didn't get the opportunity to explore his abilities further, Madara belittled the still-defiant Ōnoki, remarking that it was natural for shinobi to spend their entire lives in battle and as such, mankind would be better served sleeping peacefully under an "Infinite Tsukuyomi" (無限月読, Mugen Tsukuyomi). Charging towards the few remaining survivors alongside , they are however repelled by Tsunade and A, who had just been transported to the battlefield. Looking on in shock, Madara is confronted by all five of the current Kage.

File:A and Ōnoki attack.png

Madara and Mū face Ōnoki and A.

Deeming this an adequate test of his abilities, Madara leapt upwards to avoid Mei Terumī's attack but was instead intercepted by A, who knocks him into the lava below. Activating his Susanoo to protect himself, he is plunged even deeper into the molten liquid by A, before being completely immersed by another torrent of lava. Emerging unharmed whilst sheltered by his Susanoo, Madara commends A and Mei's respective offensive abilities, before deciding to assess the Kage's defensive capabilities using Yasaka Magatama. However, when his attack is blocked, Madara breaks through their dual-layered defence with his Susanoo's blades, only for his vision to be obscured as the Kage launch another strategy. Unable to react to the quickly approaching A, thanks to Ōnoki's assistance, their combined efforts allow A to punch through Susanoo and hit Madara. The battle then went on for sometime with Madara being on the "defensive".

As the battle continues, Madara repels and destroys Ōnoki's looming golem using Wood Release: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees, distracting the Kage. Ambushing them from behind and knocking them into the forest below with his Susanoo, he sets the trees ablaze, just as the Kage succumb to the effects of the pollen. However, Ōnoki quickly manages to rouse himself and destroy the surrounding flowers, hitting Madara in the process and exposing a face formed from Hashirama Senju's tissue, jutting out of the left side of his chest. Hearing Tsunade's reaction, he questions if she was a descendant of Hashirama, noting his intention to kill her first if she was. When Mei retorts his remark by saying that it was a basic tactic to eliminate the medical-nin first, Madara corrects her, stating he would do it simply because of Tsunade's ancestry before saying that she couldn't delay their deaths anyway. He then belittles Tsunade further for being a woman who, despite being Hashirama's descendant, possessed neither Wood Release nor medical ninjutsu that could compare to those of Hashirama, before declaring that while weak people were ugly, weak Senju were even more so. Tsunade admits to most of what was said but rebuffs Madara's opinion that she was weak, claiming that what she had inherited wasn't just mere strength, but the undying Will of Fire.

Rebuking Tsunade's belief that this would lead to his defeat, by saying power was in fact an actual thing, Madara then listens to her retort of how the will of the deceased allowed her to reform the system of medical-nin. Hearing all four rules yet unaware of her technique, he uses his Susanoo to protect himself from Tsunade's punch but when she easily fractures it, Madara considers how her strength was superior to A's. When Madara counters, he is instead repelled by Mei, before his Susanoo is shattered by A and Tsunade. Crashing to the ground, he admits Tsunade wasn't that weak but reprimands her recklessness, as her death would trouble the others. Thinking of how he would have taught Hashirama to resurrect himself if he'd knew how weak shinobi would become, Madara says that all Hashirama left behind was the power he held, similar to how Izuna left only his eyes and their powers. After Tsunade angrily responds, Madara states that if anything could be passed down, it was simply hatred. Later struck by a powerful punch from Tsunade that seemingly allowed him to be bound and sealed, Madara suddenly impales her from below, just as he emerges from within one of the trees. He then reveals that they had instead sealed a wood clone, noting that only he could see through Hashirama's use of the technique in the past due to his ocular powers.

Pondering his next target, Madara was shocked when Tsunade instead shattered his Susanoo's sword and then attacked him using the broken blade. With the blade stuck in his Susanoo's ribcage, he countered and repelled Tsunade, before noting the similarities between her and Hashirama's techniques. As he questioned whether they thought he could be stopped with his own technique, Madara was attacked from behind by Ōnoki, but he absorbed the Dust Release technique. He then explained that he deliberately let it hit him before, to expose the Hashirama face on his chest in hopes of lowering the Kage's morale, yet he was disappointed to see that it had the opposite effect. When Tsunade stated that while they were outwitted by the wood clone, it could also be said that he had no other option but to use it, Madara blamed it on fighting five Kage-level shinobi at once. Denying that he thought of them as cowards for confronting him together in response to Mei, he asserted that the current odds were the perfect number to have fun and proceeded to create multiple wood clones, sending five to each Kage. Regurgitating Mei's sentiments, Madara asked the Kage not to call him a coward given who they were, before asking whether or not they preferred the clones to use Susanoo or not.

Madara's Susanoo clones loom over the Kage.

Observing the Kage being overwhelmed by his clones and their respective Susanoo, Madara identified the more experienced Ōnoki as the biggest threat when he rescued an immobilised A from certain death. Determined to break Ōnoki's will as the Tsuchikage rallied the Kage to face him once more, Madara was instead forced to flee from the approach of an enormous Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique, as it wiped out his clones. Struck by Mei's attack, which contained both Gaara's sand and A's lightning-natured chakra, Madara's actions were halted long enough from him to start being sealed. Acknowledging the Kage's might, Madara manifested his final Susanoo, freeing himself in the process before telling the awe-struck Kage that they would now learn that even their efforts were futile against Susanoo's final form. Stating that only Hashirama could stop him, Madara then stated that Hashirama being dead was in their favour — as he swung one of his katana and repelled them — noting that if he was the only one they had to fight, the damage to the area wouldn't be as devastating (a reference to the battle between the two which created an entire valley) then answering Ōnoki's earlier question that an adult would never seriously fight children. Looming over the Kage with his Susanoo, Madara declared that he would destroy them and their efforts. But at the last second, as he attempted to deal the final blow, Madara's Susanoo suddenly de-materialised, much to his surprise.

Madara's soul1

Madara's soul remains intact.

At that moment, Kabuto's negation of Impure World Reincarnation occurs as Madara finds a light enveloping him prior to making an attempt to kill Tsunade with a Fire Release technique. Madara's soul then begins to leave its vessel just as Tsunade's Strength of a Hundred Technique was cancelled, but suddenly re-encases in his body and Madara attacks her with his Susanoo sword, only for her to somehow evade the technique while unconscious. After everyone else was sent back to the afterlife following the end of the Impure World Reincarnation, Madara still remained on the battlefield. When the Kage questioned how this was possible, Madara explained that he negated the deactivation of the technique by severing the link between Kabuto and his own soul, by releasing the summoning contract of Impure World Reincarnation, stating that to be the technique's one flaw. Madara then proceeded to criticise Mei for not realising that he was not the kind of person who would let himself be bound by such a technique as that when the latter questioned what was happening. Stating that he is now bored with the Kage, and that using his final Susanoo on them again would be an insult to his power, Madara decides to make his way to Naruto to reclaim the Nine-Tails.

Ten-Tails Revival Arc

File:Obito and Madara.png

Madara reunites with Obito.

Though blocked from leaving by Ōnoki, Madara left him and the other Kage in near death conditions before making his way to where the unmasked Obito is. After Obito returned his gunbai, having revealed that the Kage weren't left in good condition when Naruto asked what happened to them, and how Obito deviated from the original plan, Madara blocked the stakes Naruto threw at him and repels him with his Uchiha Return technique when Naruto attempted to attack him with a Super Mini-Tailed Beast Ball. He then told Obito to deal with Kakashi and Might Guy, while he dealt with the Eight, and the Nine-Tails, noting that it was not too late to seal them.

Naruto vs

Madara using the Wood Dragon technique to fight Naruto.

As the battle raged on, Madara attempted to convince Naruto that the Eye of the Moon Plan was for the benefit of humanity. However, seeing Naruto unmoved by his explanations, Madara decided to show him no mercy. To that end, Madara used Hashirama's giant wooden dragon technique. The dragon attempted to restrain the newly-manifested Tailed Beast Mode Kurama-shroud, but was bitten into by the beast. As Naruto struggled against the wooden dragon, Madara stopped B and Might Guy from interfering by binding them. Noting that these were also hindrances to Obito, and that he would clean up the battlefield, he manifested his Susanoo and aims one of its swords at the Eight-Tails. This is, however, intercepted by Naruto and Madara was later enveloped in Guy's Daytime Tiger. Shortly after, the Ten-Tails' revival was complete, with it breaking out of Obito's Uchiha Flame Formation in its incomplete form; Madara laments that he failed to acquire the Eight and Nine-Tails, but prepared to begin the final phase of the Eye of the Moon Plan in spite of that.

File:Madara&Obito vs. Shinobi Alliance.png

Madara and Obito prepare to face off against the Allied Forces.

Madara then joined Obito, and the two jumped onto the Ten-Tails' head, where each were connected to the massive demon with tendrils which stemmed from the beast. While Madara and Obito have a slight argument on how to handle the beast, as Obito wanted to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi immediately, while Madara wanted to test the beast's power. After the dust settles from a brief skirmish with the Eight and Nine-Tails and due to having focused too much of their attention on controlling the beast, they are ambushed by the Eight-Tails who had been warped overhead the Ten-Tails. After dismissing the name "Allied Shinobi Forces Technique" mentioned by Naruto, Madara declared that arguing the matter was futile, Madara noted that they should simply end the battle. When their opposition's battle strategy was launched and the two Uchiha were buffeted by the Storm Release: Laser Circus technique, though Madara was prepared to deflect the attack, he soon realised it wasn't aimed at them but at the Ten-Tails' eye. With the battlefield soon shrouded in dust and their sensory skills hindered, Madara later stood by — arms crossed and nonplussed — as the Alliance attacked the Ten-Tails, marvelling at the fact that they were able to collaborate so well. Even when members of the Alliance bore down on them, Madara derided their effort while noting that the Ten-Tails would soon reach maturity.

As Naruto and the shinobi with him start to barrage them with various attacks, Madara realises that he and Obito are being targeted as he decides to pull off their own strategy and target their command centre as the Ten-Tails breaks free while assuming its fully matured form. Telling Obito that they are going to use Hashirama's cells to strengthen their hold on the beast while getting his agreement to intimidate their opposition with its power, Madara has the Ten-Tails fire a series of Tailed Beast Balls that wipe out various villages beyond the war zone. Eventually, returning the favour and justifying it as a basic war-time move, Madara has the Ten-Tails fire at the Allied Shinobi Headquarters with Shikaku Nara and everyone else stationed there leaving them obliterated. Lamenting that he could not control the Ten-Tails well enough yet and that because of it he had failed to knocked out the HQ before Shikaku could finish relaying his plan, Madara states that their current control over the Ten-Tails will only be good enough until its next transformation. Responding to Obito's remark that without becoming its host there would be no way to gain complete control over the Ten-Tails, Madara states that he needs a living body, not a sacrifice's.

Obito and Madara get seperated from the Ten-Tails

Madara and Obito are separated from the Ten-Tails.

When Obito tells Madara that he can't just destroy himself to destroy them, as it would also mean Obito's demise and that he was at the latter's mercy since he would need him to revive him, Madara comments on his attitude. Hearing that Obito had never thought of him as an ally, Madara asks him what his next course of action will be, and listens as he says they will cripple the forces with despair. Noting how much Obito had become like him, Madara questions silently whether Obito was waiting on a response from Naruto after chiding the young man for allowing his comrades to die. When Madara cautioned Obito against possibly damage to the Ten-Tails, his words are rebuffed as Obito noted that the Ten-Tails had tough skin. After Naruto activates his Tailed Beast Mode and begins to disperse its power to his friends, Madara becomes surprised, recognising his intentions and jokingly remarking that Hinata got a nice power-up from it thanks to Naruto. As the battle continues to progress, Madara laments on the predictability of the alliance's moves after Ino possessed Obito, and predicts that Shikamaru would then use his Shadow Imitation Technique, as the latter binds the Ten-Tails.

After Madara noticed that Obito was having trouble breaking Ten-Tails free of the Shadow Imitation Technique, he decided to provide more power. However, the combined efforts of the Alliance foiled his counter-attack. After Obito goaded the Hyūga clan, the entire Alliance — powered by Kurama's chakra that Naruto gave to them — simultaneously attacked Ten-Tails, shocking the Uchiha. Obito and Madara's connections to Ten-Tails were then severed by Naruto and Rock Lee respectively with a Rasenshuriken and a well-placed kick. While his body was reconstructing itself, Madara was forced to retreat from atop the beast.

Forced to battle directly against the Allied Shinobi Forces, Madara's collaborative attacks with Obito prove useless against their chakra cloaked enemies before stopping his attack upon sensing Hashirama and delighting in fighting his old enemy again. Using his Susanoo to withstand the Ten-Tails' Tenpenchii, Madara deems his fight with the Allied Shinobi Forces boring as he allows the Ten-Tails to act on its destructive whim. When seeing him and the other Hokage arrive, an excited Madara challenges Hashirama to a long-awaited rematch, only be cut off by the First Hokage who deems the Ten-Tails a bigger priority right now. This leaves Madara dumbstruck and exposing a more childish side of himself while musing that Hashirama still irritates him after all these years. After creating five wood clones, one of Hashirama's wood clones confront Madara and tells him he's ready to fight. Madara refuses to fight the clone and wished to wait for the real Hashirama to finish what he's doing, though later Madara easily defeated the wood clone.

File:Madara reviving.png

Madara enacts his ploy to revive himself.

Sensing Obito's return to the real world from battling Kakashi in the other dimension, preferring to have become Ten-Tails' jinchūriki after defeating Hashirama, Madara deems his apprentice has outlived his usefulness and the time for him to repay for saving him has come. Forming a seal, Madara caused the black rods embedded in Obito's body to sprout forth as he projects his will into Obito to force him to execute the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to restore him to a living person and begin the sealing process on the Ten-Tails. However, Madara learns that Obito is resisting him as he becomes the Ten-Tails' host in his stead.

Though he later enjoyed looking at how Obito's ascension causes the four Hokage great fear, Madara commented that he couldn't afford to delay using his "trump card" anymore, though he admitted his fear of Obito catching onto him before he could use it. He later confronted Hashirama, cutting off his path to Obito noting that he would no longer wait on him.

File:SWW Madara vs. Hashirama.png

Madara battling Hashirama during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Activating his perfect form of Susanoo, Madara engages Hashirama, stating mutually that he had no time for this either, but that he had no choice with things turning out as they were, and told Hashirama that they should entertain each other a bit longer. When his adversary requested that they stop their fight so that they could deal with Obito's threat, Madara noted that they were reincarnated bodies and that attack would have little to no effect on them. He then told the Senju, that if he wanted to help them, he would have to charge through him. During his battle with Hashirama, he expressed surprise when Obito unleashed his tailed beast transformation to continue the Eye of the Moon Plan. As the beast evolves into its final transformation, the Shinju, Madara began to inform Hashirama on what was happening, revealing the history written on the Naka Shrine tablet. He then went on to admit that upon figuring this out, he had became hopeless and figured that there was no "true dream", in the world they live in. It was only after that, Madara revealed that the Eye of the Moon Plan would be complete once the flower on top of the Shinju bloomed. Which he then, reaffirmed that he will be the one to control. He calmly adds that the Infinite Tsukuyomi will be complete within fifteen minutes, but before that he will use Hashirama's Sage power to switch places with Obito. All throughout the ensuing events on the battlefield, Madara continues to fight Hashirama.

Later, after Obito was defeated by Naruto and had the tailed beasts extracted from him, Madara was restrained by Hashirama's wood dragons and left incapacitated by Naruto's Big Ball Rasenshuriken long enough for the Senju to subdue his rival. However, before the Allied Forces got a chance to seal him, Madara had Black Zetsu merge with Obito and forced him to activate the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique and use its power to revive him. Finally revived in a living body, he quickly broke free of his entrapment, and foiled Sai's attempt to seal him. Standing victorious amongst the living again, Madara ecstatically exclaimed that he finally had the ability to feel the thrill of battle once more.

Madara defeats and captures Hashirama.

As his reincarnated eyes began to deteriorate into nothing, Sasuke attacked a blinded Madara with Amaterasu. The older Uchiha was unfazed by this, able to disperse the flames long enough to remove his armour and emerge unharmed. Madara soon turned his attention to Hashirama once more, reminding the late Hokage of their talk at the Naka Shrine. While agreeing with Hashirama that two opposite forces finding unity is wonderful, he found a different way to obtain such. Taking advantage of the improvements others did to his research, Madara used the chakra receivers embedded in Hashirama to restrain him. Madara then quickly took hold of his rival and drained him of his senjutsu chakra, activating the Sage Mode through his replication of Hashirama's face he had on his chest.

Sasuke attacked Madara again with a flurry of sword strikes, to which Madara easily dodged and ultimately restrained the blade using his own body. Sensing that Sasuke was an Uchiha and a wielder of the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, Madara was impressed by Sasuke's visual prowess and decided he would take the younger Uchiha's eyes until he could retrieve his own. Openly acknowledging that killing Sasuke would be a waste, Madara offered to let Sasuke join him, to which Sasuke venomously turned down. Madara then continued to easily repel his opponents despite his handicap. When the seven formerly sealed tailed beasts arrived to aid Naruto, Madara calmly decided he would capture them now.

File:Madara restores his eye.png

Madara regains his right eye.

Standing against the tailed beasts all by himself, Madara faced off against an initial attack by Shukaku and Gaara, quickly joined by the other tailed beasts. As the tanuki attempted to seal the Uchiha, he unleashes his Susanoo, easily escaping and noted that he would put them on a leash, without letting them get away. Naruto in Tailed Beast Mode attacked him, giving no time for Madara to react. As Gyūki — who was carrying the wounded to a safe place — joined the battle, the tailed beasts and Naruto land a devastating assault on Madara with their respective tails. Badly injured, Madara was found by a Zetsu clone, with one of the eyes Madara's had given to Nagato. With that, Madara also replaced his severed arm with the Zetsu's and implanted his eye into his right eye socket, activating the Rinnegan and noting things are going to be "fun". Madara then proceeded to extract the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path from within Obito, noticing upon its arrival that someone with a powerful eye removed its right arm. Despite this, Madara quickly focused on recapturing the tailed beasts healed himself. Once atop the Demonic Statue's head, Madara repelled the tailed beasts, followed quickly by jumping onto the Demonic Statue where he unleashed several chains to subdue the tailed beasts. Content with the situation, Madara prepared to extract the Eight and Nine-Tails from the jinchūriki first.

Restrained by Madara, Naruto made his attempt to escape, by ejecting his Tailed Beast Mode but this effort proved to be futile. Madara then turned his attention to Shukaku, attempting to extract the One-Tail first. He was, however, intercepted by Gaara with enormous sand hands. Madara launched one of his Susanoo swords at Gaara but Shukaku intervened, declaring that it prided itself on its Absolute Defence after all. However, Madara was able to manipulate the sword further, sending it boomeranging across the battlefield. By doing this, Madara was able to break the section of the chain Gaara held and reconnect it to the beast all while sending the sword directly at Gaara whose automatic defence protected against the attack, but he was still knocked down.

File:Madara stabs Sasuke.png

Madara fatally injures Sasuke.

Moments after sealing the nine tailed beasts within the Demonic Statue, Tobirama appeared from behind Madara. Despite the well-timed assault, Madara evaded and subdued the reincarnated Hokage. Madara noted his personal joy at destroying the man who killed his brother Izuna. As Madara explained his intentions for the "Infinite Tsukuyomi", Sasuke attacked him with an opening provided by Tobirama. Noticing this, Madara immobilises Sasuke in the air and grabs the younger Uchiha's sword proceeding to stab him in the chest.

With his enemies dealt with, Madara causally proceeded to resurrect the Ten-Tails again, immediately sealing it into his being and instantly subjugating it to gain complete control of its power. Pleased with himself, Madara set off to regain his left eye. On his way, he felt something inside his body weighting down his chest, and spat it out, revealing to be the Benihisago and Kohaku no Jōhei that Obito used to substitute Kurama's chakra. Deeming them useless, Madara pressed on and landed right in front of where Minato, Kakashi, Obito, Black Zetsu, Naruto, Sakura and Gaara were. Black Zetsu informs Madara that he was able to steal the Yin half of Kurama Minato sealed inside himself. As Black Zetsu attempted to return to Madara, Obito overshadowed Black Zetsu, keeping it merged to the young Uchiha, determined to talk to Madara.

File:Obito shoves his hand into Madara.png

Madara is impaled by Obito Uchiha.

Asking Madara what he was to the older Uchiha, Madara simply stated that Obito was a reflection of himself and his goals. Proclaiming that the Sage of Six Paths failed in his pursuit of peace by giving the world chakra, and instead brought about even greater war, Madara insisted that Obito finish in his duties of saving the world. As Obito approached Madara, he was attacked by Minato. Despite the Hokage's effort, Madara easily repelled the assault. As Obito reached Madara, the teacher was left shocked as the student impaled him through the chest, stating that carrying on someone's name and work is not the same as having their trust. Proclaiming that he is not any part of Madara, but the Obito who dreamed of being Hokage, Obito absorbed some of the Ten-Tails' chakra from Madara and formed his jinchūriki shakujō.

Quickly regaining his composure, Madara reached for Obito's left Rinnegan, only for Obito to phase through Madara's hand with Kamui. Obito then attempted to absorb the tailed beasts within Madara, but only managed to take a small portion of the One-Tail and Eight-Tails' chakra as Madara quickly repelled Obito's effort. Knowing that Obito needs to remain solid to teleport, Madara then stopped Obito from going to the other dimension to aid Naruto, who was sent there by Kakashi, his attack out-speeding Obito's teleportation. As Obito and Kakashi teamed up against Madara, he attacked both of them, but their combined Kamui was faster, sending Obito to the other dimension, while Kakashi was saved by Guy's timely arrival.

File:Guy hits Madara.JPG

Madara is hit by a devastating blow from Might Guy.

Realising that taijutsu was their best bet against Madara, Guy opened seven of the Eight Gates and attacked Madara, who realised what he was using. Easily dodging all of Guy's attacks, the spirited Konoha-nin unleashed his Daytime Tiger on Madara, only for the Uchiha to resist it. Madara then launched one of his black orbs at a battered Guy, who was saved by the timely arrival of Rock Lee. Quickly recovering, Guy decided to take the ultimate gamble and use the life-threatening Eighth Gate against Madara. As Madara notes the effect of all Eight Gates resembling rotting leaves, Guy retorts the comment, saying he will be nourishment for the next generation. Guy then attacks Madara with his Evening Elephant. As Guy begins his relentless assault, Madara is left stunned and unable to produce an effective defence, growing worried about the final strike of Guy's attack. Choosing to assist their ally, Guy's friends see through the true nature of Madara's chakra orbs and deprive him of most of them, allowing Guy to deliver the final blow cleanly. Visibly battered and winded, Madara manages to return to his feet, delighting in this experience and comparing it to his battle against Hashirama at the Valley of End, and at the same time hoping that he still can be entertained by Might Guy, much to the latter's dread.

File:Lava Release Rasenshuriken.png

Madara dodges Naruto's attack.

Realising that he was running out of time and had no other tricks left, Guy resorted to his ultimate move, the Night Guy. As Madara watched in amazement at Guy's undeniable taijutsu mastery, Guy launched his attack, obliterating the left side of Madara's torso. As Guy finally collapsed at reaching his limit, a slowly regenerating Madara applauds Guy for almost killing him, deciding to finish Guy personally rather than let him die from the Eighth Gate's power. As Madara launched his remaining chakra orb at Guy, Naruto suddenly returns and deflects it, much to Madara's shock. With a new look in Naruto's eyes, he uses a new power to save Guy's life. Madara deduces that Obito had a part in this. Naruto then quickly attacked Madara with a chakra-enhanced punch, to which Madara barely blocked. Madara realised that Naruto had somehow gained a tremendous increase in power, Naruto unleashed a new Lava Release-Rasenshuriken. Madara attempted to repel it with his Limbo: Border Jail, only for Naruto to sense it coming and quickly evade it, letting Naruto completely overwhelm Madara with his attack blasted him through the great tree of the Shinju.

File:Madara takes off Kakashi's eye.png

Madara steals Kakashi's left eye.

Madara hears the Shinju telling him to absorb it. Realising the situation, Madara then absorbed the tree into him, fully regenerating himself. As Naruto prepared to continue his battle, Madara proclaimed that he was immortal and could not be defeated. Naruto calmly said he never intended to defeat Madara alone, cueing Sasuke to appear beside him. As Naruto entered a new chakra-mode and Sasuke acquired the Rinnegan in his left eye, Madara determined that the two had obtained the power of the Sage of Six Paths as well. Unconcerned by this, Madara was determined to prove his power as unparalleled. Madara begins using his wide array of techniques, but Naruto and Sasuke's combined power is able to fend off the older shinobi. Soon deciding that the best action to take would be to first regain his left eye, Madara attacks an exhausted Kakashi and steals his Sharingan, quickly inserting it into his own eye-socket. While Sasuke manages to bisect Madara, the older Uchiha uses the power of his new eye to teleport him his upper half to the other dimension, arriving in time to stop Sakura Haruno from destroying the left Rinnegan in Obito's possession.

File:Mugen Tsukuyomi.png

Madara activates the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Seeing Madara's attack, Obito teleported Sakura back to the normal dimension, but was too weak to join her, leaving him at Madara's mercy. While impressed that Obito was able to remove the cursed seal Madara placed on him, the former teacher revealed to Obito his deception from years ago, having instigated Rin's death to make Obito a willing pawn, greatly shocking Obito. Madara then decided to reclaim his left eye. After taking it, Madara then reinserted Obito's original left eye to his true wielder as Black Zetsu finally regained control. Madara then teleported himself and Black Zetsu with Obito back to the normal dimension. Not wasting any time, Madara then proceeded to perform the Chibaku Tensei. As Naruto and Sasuke attempted to slow down the formation of the technique, Madara removed his forehead protector and opened his new third eye, casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi on the moon. As nearly the entire world's populace, both human and animal, falls under the influence of his genjutsu, Madara then sets the stage to complete his technique with the God: Nativity of a World of Trees, assimilating his victims into the Shinju.

As Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke and Kakashi confronted Black Zetsu, Madara interrupted the group and proclaimed that as the world's saviour, he would be the one to finish them. Madara told Naruto and the others that he had ended all suffering in the world. Naruto retorted that all Madara had created is a massive lie. Madara asked Naruto if he would really be willing to deny everyone's happiness. Claiming that he had turned hell into heaven, he stated that this was the end for them.

File:Black Zetsu stabs Madara.png

However, to Madara's and everyone's shock, Black Zetsu proceeded to impale Madara from behind through his chest. Black Zetsu informed Madara that it was not the end, and he was not the world's saviour. He questioned Madara as to why he would think he was at all superior to Obito, and never mistaken as to who was in control. Unable to move, Madara demanded to know what Black Zetsu was trying to do, reminding him that he was created from his own will. However, Zetsu corrected him, claiming that he was not made of Madara's will, but of Kaguya's. Madara screamed as Black Zetsu's will began spreading onto his body. Now helpless and powerless, Madara's shadows vanished as noted by both Naruto and Sasuke, and Black Zetsu continued taking over his body, while assimilating all the chakra gathered from the victims caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi from the ground into him. Unable to contain the excessive amount of incoming chakra, Madara turned into a large grotesque blob-like mass, until he was completely covered by Black Zetsu, which shrunk and changed, revealing a revived Kaguya in his stead.

Legacy

Madara Uchiha continued to influence the world, even decades after his death. Having experimented on his deceased body, Tobirama would learn the full workings of the Sharingan. By instructing Obito to carry on in his name, the new "Madara" would go on to influence Yahiko to create Akatsuki, while keeping an eye on Nagato's Rinnegan. Obito's actions are all for the sake of the Eye of the Moon Plan Madara designed, included the Nine-Tails' Attack on Konoha which culminated in the deaths of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki which resulted in their newborn son Naruto Uzumaki being made into Kurama's jinchuriki, as well as becoming an orphaned social pariah whom everyone despised and strongly resented because of the Nine-Tails within Naruto's own body. Obito was also successfully able to convince mostly everyone that he was in fact the legendary Madara, and exploited the terror the name invoked to cause the Fourth Shinobi World War with a death toll of 40,000 shinobi.

However, Madara's notoriety was enough that Kabuto Yakushi would search for his DNA and reincarnate him in his youthful prime as a bid for strategic dominance in the Fourth Shinobi World War while exposing Obito's deception. However this had repercussions as Madara severed his contract with the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation to carry out the final phase of his plan, considering his reincarnation as an unfortunate substitute of the intended resurrection which Nagato was supposed to perform. Regardless of this, Madara enacted his longtime plan and was ultimately able to use his backup plan to force Obito to revive him using the Outer Path technique.

Quotes

  • (To Ōnoki and ) "There is no alliance. From here on, you will obey Konoha! And never, ever say that shinobi's name around me!"[21]
  • (To Hashirama Senju) "While I walk towards my real dream, I'll enjoy fighting you."[19]
  • (To Kurama) "Nine-Tails, you are merely a momentary life, a temporary existence of coalesced energy… energy that once was a single, ultimate form! An unstable force, lacking in intelligence or sapience, you require a guide to show you purpose. That guide is the Uchiha! The tailed beasts are but slaves to those with blessed eyes. Obey!"[28]
  • (To Obito) "This world is full of things that don't go as you wish. The longer you live the more you realise reality is just made of pain, suffering, and emptiness... Listen… In this world, whenever there is light, there are also shadows. As long as the concept of winners exist, there must also be losers. The selfish desire of wanting to maintain peace causes wars and hatred is born to protect love."[224]
  • (To Obito) "So for you, it's more believable if i say that I'm a Shinigami? In a way you could say that I'm a Shinigami, indeed. Because this reality… is Hell."[225]
  • (Last words to Obito before dying) "Go… until the time… I revive… you are Madara Uchiha."[226]
  • (To Tobirama) "Hashirama's country was a shameful contradiction… Man seeks peace, yet at the same time yearning for war… Those are the two realms belonging solely to man. Thinking of peace whilst spilling blood is something only humans can do. They're two sides of the same coin. To protect something… another must be sacrificed. That is, other than that of, say a dream world."[227]
  • (To Obito) "I taught you that in order to control people, you need to use the darkness in their hearts. And if there's no darkness, then you just create it… […] From the bottom of your heart, you felt kindness and sympathy for others. […] Your deep feelings… …for Rin… …your comrades… …the Hokage and the shinobi… All you needed to do was to fall once, and all that would turn around into deep hatred for the world."[228]
  • (To Naruto) "I just stopped the fate of this world. I freed people from pain, suffering, emptiness. […] Naruto… You're getting in the way of everyone's happiness. Our game ends here. I turned hell into heaven. You should understand… It's already over."[229]
