Madara Uchiha was the legendary leader of the Uchiha Clan. He founded Konohagakure alongside his childhood friend and rival, Hashirama Senju, with the intention of bringing about an era of peace. When the two couldn't agree on how to achieve that peace, they fought for control of the village, a conflict which ended in Madara's death. Madara, however, rewrote his death and went into hiding to work on his own plans. Unable to complete it in his natural life, he entrusted his knowledge and plans to Obito shortly before his actual death. Years later, Madara would be revived, only to see his plans foiled and ultimately, and finally, realising the error of his ways and making amends with Hashirama before his final death.

Madara was born during the Warring States Period, and was the eldest of Tajima Uchiha's five children. Madara and his siblings grew up on the battlefield waging constant war with the Uchiha's rivals: the Senju. Three of his siblings died young, leaving Madara with only his younger brother, Izuna. Madara and Izuna became very close through their shared loss and constantly competed with each other to get stronger. This, combined with his naturally strong chakra, enabled the young Madara to defeat adult Senju in battle and develop a reputation as a genius.
Before the era of ninja villages, Madara was considered one of the most gifted members of the Uchiha clan alongside his younger brother Izuna Uchiha. Madara also competed with Izuna as training. Even by his clan's standards, Madara's chakra was especially strong. As a child, Madara met Hashirama Senju for the first time and became rivals at skipping stones. With their first meeting cut short after discovering the body of a member of the Hagoromo clan, the two would later meet again and Madara questioned Hashirama revealed that his brother had been killed in battle. Telling Hashirama that he himself once had four brothers, the pair discussed the prospect of peace for the world. It was here that Madara was finally able to skip his rock to the other side of the river. As they grew older, Madara's rivalry with Hashirama increased, and the two would meet by the riverbank, where they would spar and talk about changing the future. On one such occasion, Hashirama brought up the prospect of creating a village where children would not be sent to war and could grow up to be strong warriors.

During his infrequent downtime, Madara met a boy his own age named Hashirama. The two quickly developed a friendly rivalry, be it skipping stones or urinating in rivers. Like Madara, Hashirama was also a shinobi who had lost his brothers on the battlefield. Together they imagined a world where children like themselves wouldn't need to fight. As a precaution, Madara and Hashirama did not divulge their family names, but nevertheless discovered each other's identities: Madara was an Uchiha, Hashirama was a Senju; it was their duty to kill each other, even if they were friends. Needing to choose between his family and his dreams of peace, Madara chose to end his friendship with Hashirama so he would have no reservations over killing him in the future, a resolve strong enough to awaken his Sharingan.

These meetings were not to last, however, as Madara's father Tajima soon found out about the two boys meeting and planned an ambush. However, the two boys warned one another in time, and as they fled, their fathers and brothers confront one another. After the initial scuffle, Madara and Hashirama intervened, getting between their respective families. Madara, realising that he had to chose between Hashirama and their dream or his family, regretfully decided to end his friendship with the young Senju, determined to protect his brother Izuna. Hashirama tried to make Madara reconsider, but Madara refused to let go of his anger for the Senju. He announced his full name to Hashirama, awakening his Sharingan.

Madara and Hashirama combat.png
From then on, Madara would constantly battle Hashirama with the intent of erasing him from his past. Eventually, he and Izuna awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. With their newly obtained power, the two brothers became the head of the clan, with Madara becoming its leader. Sometime afterwards, Madara and Izuna fought Hashirama and Tobirama, where Izuna was mortally wounded by Tobirama. Madara retreated and Izuna died from his wounds but left Madara his eyes, granting him the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Madara later confronted Hashirama again with his new found ocular prowess, but nonetheless he was defeated once more. Noting that he could not trust them any more, Madara told Hashirama that the only way to regain this trust was to either kill himself or his brother.
+
Over the following years Madara and Hashirama continued to meet in combat. Madara could never defeat Hashirama even after acquiring a Mangekyō Sharingan and Hashirama could never bring himself to kill someone he still considered a friend, resulting in a constant stalemate between the two that lasted decades. In time, both Madara and Hashirama became leaders of their respective clans, a position Hashirama tried to use to broker peace between them. Although some Uchiha found the offer increasingly tempting, Madara refused due to Izuna's death at the hands of Hashirama's own brother, Tobirama Senju. Despite this, some Uchiha defected over to the Senju clan out of self-preservation. Madara then used Izuna's eyes in order to gain "eternal" Mangekyō Sharingan and restore his deteriorating vision. With this new power he waged one final assault against the Senju and was summarily defeated. Rather than kill Madara to bring the era of war to an end, Hashirama offered to kill himself if it would stop the fighting. Madara was moved by Hashirama's gesture and finally assented to peace.

The Senju, the Uchiha, and all their affiliated clans came together to found a village of peace, where children would never need to die in battle. Madara and Hashirama rekindled their childhood friendship, and Madara named that village Konohagakure, seeing it through leaves. But Madara's idea of peace differed from Hashirama's: where Hashirama envisioned cooperation with the other newly-formed villages, Madara desired control so the peace could never be lost, evidenced by his attacking Iwagakure's Mū and Ōnoki so that they would submit to Konoha's authority. When Hashirama was elected as Hokage, Konoha's leader, Madara also became concerned for the Uchiha's future, believing this to be but the first step in the Senju's dominance.

Once again approached with the subject of peaced between the clans, Madara only agreed to accept the terms if Hashirama was willing to either kill himself or Tobirama. Sometime afterward, Madara was forced to accept the ceasefire request from Hashirama and the clans formed an alliance. The Senju, the Uchiha, and all the clans they had conquered came together to form the village of Konohagakure. Some time later, the villagers of Konoha selected Hashirama as the village's first Hokage, prompting Madara to contest him for the position. During the time he was a shinobi of Konohagakure, Madara approached Mū and Ōnoki where he informed them that despite the alliance that Iwagakure had made with Konoha, his village was to remain the dominant power and that from that point on, they would obey Konoha. Afterwards, Madara fought and defeated them when they engaged him in battle.

The Stone Tablet Zetsu altered had been in the Uchiha's possession for generations and was brought with them when they settled in Konoha. Through careful study, Madara was able to decipher enough of it to learn of the history of shinobi: of the endless cycle of failed peace and the destiny of battle between Uchiha and Senju, but also a means of unity for the world. With this knowledge, Madara decided Konoha was a failed experiment. He tried to convince his own clan and even Hashirama of the same conclusion, but none would hear him. Madara chose to abandon the village, attacking Konoha on multiple occasions, later returning with the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox under his control to challenge Hashirama. They fought to exhaustion, and from the carnage of their battle the Valley of the End was formed. In the end, Madara was killed by Hashirama.

News of Madara's death spread fast and his corpse was secretly hidden to keep anyone from finding it and profiting from it. But Madara had planned ahead: he had scheduled an Izanagi to activate sometime after his death, changing reality to bring him back to life in exchange for his right eye's vision. Meanwhile, Black Zetsu had spend an unspecific length of time hiding itself inside of Madara's body, allowing it to later deceive Madara into thinking he created it. After being revived, he left a copy in place of his real body and went into hiding with a special trophy from his fight with Hashirama: a mouthful of Hashirama's flesh that he transplanted into his wounds. It was not until decades later, towards the end of Madara's natural life, that the cells had any effect, awakening the Rinnegan (in the process restoring his right eye). With the Rinnegan, he was able to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, which he used to cultivate a mindless living clone of Hashirama from which he believed he had produced a White Zetsu Army.
After realising that he would not be able to replace Hashirama as Hokage, Madara began to fear that Hashirama would begin to oppress the Uchiha and tried to rally support for challenging his leadership. Rather than help him, however, the Uchiha turned their backs on Madara, believing he only desired to rekindle the flames of war. Abandoned by his clan, Madara left the village, sought out Kurama, and subdued it using his Sharingan. He later returned in order to challenge Hashirama in battle. They fought at the site that would someday be called the Valley of the End, where Madara was beaten, despite controlling Kurama and having it at his side. Possession of Kurama was ultimately taken from him by Hashirama's wife, Mito, and Madara was believed to have died.

Over the years, Madara had perfected his plans for peace in what he called the Eye of the Moon Plan. But as his years waned, Madara knew he couldn't complete his plans in the time he had left. So he transplanted his Rinnegan into a young Nagato without the boy's knowing, intending Nagato to someday use the eyes to restore Madara to life. If Nagato was to do this, however, Madara would need an agent to act on his behalf and guide Nagato towards this ultimate goal. Madara waited, connecting himself to Demonic Statue to keep him alive until someone could be found. Madara spent this time keeping a close eye on Konoha to find a suitable pawn to take his place.
In spite of this, Madara was able to survive the battle and go into hiding. He then used Hashirama's cells, which he had acquired on the battlefield, and transplanted them into his wounds. Though he noted that nothing happened at first, when he was nearing the end of his natural lifespan, he awakened the Rinnegan. He also acquired the Wood Release kekkei genkai, and with both Senju and Uchiha DNA — the ability to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. He later transplanted his Rinnegan eyes into Nagato without the young man knowing, and replaced his left eye with a spare Sharingan. When he met Obito years later, Madara had been reduced to using the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path as a life support system, constantly being supplied chakra by it or else he would die immediately. Also from the stolen cells of Hashirama, Madara used the statue to cultivate a living clone of Hashirama.

During the Third Shinobi World War, he saved Obito Uchiha after the battle of Kannabi Bridge, using artificial mass to replace the destroyed half of Obito's body. He told Obito that he would have to repay his debt to him slowly. Madara then left White Zetsu and a spiral-patterned clone with the task of guarding Obito and helping him with his rehabilitation, so he could be useful to him by the time he woke up. After Obito returned to him as he had predicted, Madara, now certain that Obito was sincere, carried him into a genjutsu and told him about the Sage of the Six Paths and the Ten-Tails. He then explained how he had awakened the Rinnegan, gained access to the empty shell of the Ten-Tails, and cultivated Hashirama's cells. He would go on to teach him various Uchiha kinjutsu, those of the Rinnegan and Yin–Yang Release. Before passing, Madara also created Black Zetsu by pouring his will into White Zetsu and also left part of his will in the chakra receiver which extends from the statue's navel. With that, Madara disconnected himself from the statue and, with his dying breath, told Obito to go and, until the time he was revived, he was to act under his name.
+
During the Third Shinobi World War, Madara found a badly injured Obito. Madara used Hashirama's cells to replace Obito's damaged extremities and placed a Forbidden Individual Curse Tag in Obito's heart as a fail-safe in case Obito ever turned against him. Until then, Madara began working towards corrupting Obito. He had Kirigakure kidnap the girl Obito loved, Rin Nohara, and seal the Three-Tails into her. He then manipulated events so that Rin would die at the hand of Obito's friend, Kakashi Hatake, while Obito watched. Driven to despair, Obito offered his services to Madara. Madara divulged to Obito the history of the Sage of the Six Paths and the Ten-Tails, the details of his Eye of the Moon Plan, and various techniques that Obito would need moving forward. As a final act, he left behind Black Zetsu what he believed to be a manifestation of his will to provide additional guidance to Obito in pursuit of this goal. With that, Madara disconnected from the Demonic Statue and, with his dying breath, entrusted Obito with his name: Madara Uchiha.

Fulfilling the legendary Uchiha's request, Obito, later known as "Tobi", began operating under his name while concealing his face. Due to his first-hand knowledge of Madara's actions and deeds, other shinobi were led to believe he was in fact the legendary ninja himself. However, thanks to researching the matter with Orochimaru, Kabuto Yakushi learned the truth behind Madara's time after the Valley of the End and actual death, reincarnating the ninja to blackmail Tobi into letting him aid him during the Fourth Great Shinobi World War where Kabuto partly exposed Tobi's deception.

  +
Madara's childhood was a product of the times he lived in: the constant fighting made him a perfectionist that would keep at something until he mastered it, and his triumphs on the battlefield made him very confident in his abilities and talent. Whenever one of these personality traits was challenged, as they tended to be by Hashirama, Madara's competitive streak would emerge. Madara did not mind Hashirama's influence in this regard; he believed that the only way to survive in the shinobi world was to make allies with one's enemies. His exposure to Hashirama is credited for Madara not experiencing the Uchiha's "Curse of Hatred" or at the very least, not being victimised by it as much as Izuna was and even though he claimed to have abandoned his friendship with Hashirama, Madara still held onto their friendship subconsciously. Madara's actions and beliefs were singularly focused on protecting Izuna, his only surviving brother. So long as he had Izuna, Madara was reasonable and kind, willing to make concessions for a perceived greater good.
As a child, as well as before his corruption, Madara was a kind, temperamental and highly competitive child who wanted to perfect everything he did. Despite this, he was apologetic and highly sensitive to his surroundings, as revealed when he comically stated that he wasn't able to urinate with others standing behind him, and when he constantly tried to comfort Hashirama when he thought he hurt his feelings. Madara was also prone to angry outbursts when he got annoyed, as referenced when Hashirama would tease him about not being able to skip a rock to the other edge of a river when they were boys. Due to the harsh nature of the times they lived in, Madara believed that the only way to survive in the shinobi world was to make allies with your enemies, an ideal shared by his rival, whom eventually became his close friend and ally. Madara and Hashirama came to care about each other over their own clans going as far as to purposely leak information to each other about a trap their respective clans laid out.

  +
Madara changed after Izuna's death, becoming bitter towards the Senju, particularly Hashirama since he still had a brother. Embracing his clan's Curse of Hatred, he opted to die for revenge rather than compromise or forgive. Although he was briefly convinced to set aside his grief and try to replace Izuna with the collective family of Konoha, he could never shake the feeling that he was betraying Izuna's memory. The increasing isolation of himself and other Uchiha from village politics ultimately convinced him of this, causing him to fully break with any other attachments.
As he grew older, Madara became a very confident and prideful man, witnessed in his belittlement of Ōnoki both after his reincarnation and in the past, in his berating of Mei Terumī's technique, in the fact he uses relatively weaker attacks in his arsenal initially and works his way up to his more powerful techniques when the situation requires it and the fact he believes that using more powerful techniques more than once in a battle would be disgraceful. Conversely, he isn't above praising the abilities of others as he openly called both Mei and A's abilities an impressive offence, and Gaara and Ōnoki's manoeuvre an impressive defence, also commending the two being able to stop his first meteorite, as well as commending Naruto for countering his Wood Release attack. Having respect for Naruto, Madara tried to reason with him that the Eye of the Moon Plan was for the good of mankind. However he has also been shown to be spiteful, degrading Tsunade while comparing her to her grandfather, after saying he would kill her first out of the five Kage because she was a Senju. Madara is, however, an honest individual and is willing to admit when he is wrong as after Tsunade tag-teamed him with A, he admitted she was not weak at all. Madara is also willing to admit when someone is stronger than he is as he openly admitted that Hashirama could stop him during his battle with the five Kage. Madara, however, isn't above reprimanding others for recklessness or stupidity as he criticised Tsunade for attacking him without thinking of what the other Kage would do for treatment if she was killed and criticised the five Kage as a group for worrying too much about the flowers in his technique and not watching their backs. He also has a habit of referring to fighting as 'dancing'.

  +
During his time as a Konoha shinobi, Madara did what he thought was in the village's best interests. Unlike Hashirama's compassionate methods, Madara took a merciless approach: the shinobi of Iwagakure only had purpose so long as they swore unwavering allegiance to Konoha. Since their methods were so different, Madara hated to hear Hashirama's name during diplomatic discussions. After his defection from Konoha, Madara's priorities became centred around the Eye of the Moon Plan, manipulating countless others in order to satisfy his own goals and putting in place multiple layers of contingencies so that nobody could ever diverge from his own intentions. Despite this, Madara genuinely believed this plan would in fact, benefit the world and simply followed an "ends justifies the means" principle.
Madara has a dark sense of humour, as shown when he created multiple wood clones and surrounded each of the five Kage with five clones — thereby reversing the original five vs. one situation — and asked if they preferred the clones to use Susanoo or not, referred to incinerating the forest as "creating coal" after knocking the five Kage into it, and when asked by Naruto what had happened to the Kage, he stated that they were "not okay". He has a very jaded and emotionless approach towards the tragedies of war, to the point of light-heartedly joking about them, as seen from his cheer at having "destroyed the alliance's mind", which further demonstrates his knack for reversing the situations he finds himself in. Madara also believes power is something tangible that can be passed down through generations and that the will of a dead person cannot be inherited, as it is not tangible. While contesting Hashirama for the title of Hokage, Madara in his own way, was very loyal to Konohagakure, as he tried to force Iwagakure into serving Konoha, even after an alliance had been formed between the two villages. Despite his pride and confidence in his immense power, Madara is shown to be highly cautious as he created a wood clone of himself at some point when the five Kage lost sight of him, in order to lessen the chances that they would catch him off guard.

  +
As he valued only power and possessed so much of it, Madara therefore disliked to waste it on unworthy causes or unchallenging opponents, claiming disgust when he was forced to.
As an Uchiha, Madara possesses an innate hatred for the Senju clan, as what is known as the Curse of Hatred, which dates back to the early days of the ninja world. This curse, which according to Obito, led him to oppose the truce fearing that his clan would be oppressed by them, and when Hashirama was selected to be Hokage instead of Madara, he defected from Konoha and attempted to attack the village after failing to replace him. His animosity towards Hashirama was particularly strong, going as far as to forbid Ōnoki from mentioning that name in front of him ever again. Nevertheless, Madara possesses a high level of respect and admiration for Hashirama as well as the Senju name as seen during the Fourth Shinobi World War where he would praise and curse Hashirama or other members of the clan in the same breath. Conversely, he also lamented that he would have taught Hashirama how to resurrect himself if he had known how much weaker the modern day shinobi would be compared to them. Madara was very competitive with his younger brother, Izuna, but Tobi also notes that Madara and Izuna were close as brothers. This was later echoed by Hashirama who noted that Madara held great love for his brother, which he claimed was probably greater than Itachi Uchiha's love for his brother, Sasuke.

  +
Madara loved fighting above all else: the sights, the sounds, even the taste of his own blood, occasionally describing his battles as "dances"; he felt being reincarnated deprived him of the full experience. Yet he was very disciplined in a fight, never allowing his failed plans or attacks to upset him, never letting superior numbers or power intimidate him, and always willing to do whatever must be done to gain victory. Although he sometimes imposed limitations on himself, such as not using certain techniques more than once, he was willing to "lower" himself with unbecoming tactics or excessive displays in order to change tactics and exploit advantages. He was perfectly aware of his talents and did not feign modesty, bluntly stating when he was stronger than his opponents and belittling them when they continued to defy him. Conversely, if he was proven wrong or somebody posed a legitimate challenge to him, he would admit it, and apologise for previous remarks if necessary. In addition, if such an opponent is about to die, he would show them the ultimate respect by taking the time and effort to finish them off himself, even if said person is going to die on their own. Stemming from this, he feels insulted if he knows an opponent isn't using their full power against him, even if he knows it will result in their death. He also held the Senju to a higher standard in terms of power due to his encounters with Hashirama, stating a weak Senju disgusts him more than a weak shinobi of any kind.
Madara is seemingly treacherous by nature as, after the alliance with Iwagakure was made, he immediately betrayed Mū and Ōnoki, expecting them to follow Konohagakure's lead from then on. The Uchiha also believed Madara stole Izuna's eyes by force in order to escape blindness. He is also a battle-loving individual, commenting that he had not enjoyed this view in a long time while surveying the battlefield during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Relating to this, Madara enjoys a challenging fight and said that anything less than the five Kage against him would be inadequate. Madara is also very bold when it comes to battle, shown in his ready assault of an entire platoon of shinobi upon being attacked, despite being severely outnumbered. Despite his love of battle, Madara never loses his composure to excitement or fear in any of his battle situations. Also despite his love of battle, if Madara becomes bored with a fight, he will express disgust if his opponents try to force him to keep fighting. Madara is also something of a show off, as shown in his use of extremely powerful techniques in rapid succession, all the while, expressing satisfaction to having done it. He also purposely let himself get hit by Ōnoki's attack in order to show Hashirama's face on his chest to lower the morale of the Kage. Madara also showed the five Kage the true power of his perfect Susanoo by destroying an entire mountain range before preparing to administer the finishing blow. Due to the times he lived in, Madara believes it is natural for shinobi to spend their entire lives in battle. He also thinks that the world can't change from what it was in the past and believes that as such, mankind would be better served sleeping peacefully in an Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Madara has been described as being hostile and aggressive by nature as well as being very ambitious, the latter of which was seen during his rise to the position of clan leader as well as his desire to make his clan superior out of what Tobi claimed was Madara's great love for them. Madara had a sense of honour as, prior to their betrayal of him, he wanted to protect the Uchiha clan from the possibility of oppression by the Senju after failing to replace Hashirama as Hokage. Madara also views the tailed beasts as nothing more than masses of energy and tools too lacking in intelligence and sapience to think for themselves and as such, need to be "guided" by the Uchiha to learn their purpose and believes that they are but slaves to those with blessed eyes. Despite his aggressiveness, Madara has displayed restraint, withholding his full power when he doesn't need it, as he stated to the Third Tsuchikage that the reason that he went so easy on him when they fought in the past was because he didn't think an adult should fight seriously against a child, as well as expressing his wish to further explore the powers of his enhanced body but refusing to do so against a seriously injured Ōnoki. He is also somewhat of a perfectionist, as though Tobi claimed that the Ten-Tails' revival does not have to be perfect to advance the Eye of the Moon Plan, Madara noted this, along with his revival being different from the original plan, as acts of impatience and proceeded to correct the mistake.

  +
One of the exceptions Madara makes was Hashirama. Their years of rivalry left Madara with competing feelings of respect and resentment for Hashirama. Madara considered Hashirama the only opponent worthy of his time and would postpone his own plans if it meant prolonging his time to fight with Hashirama without issue. Despite this, Madara is quite open-minded about recognising other strong individuals besides Hashirama, as when he declares Might Guy as the strongest taijutsu user he's ever faced.

  +
Despite his prowess and intellect, Madara is not without moments of recklessness. When he was brought back to life, he showed no hesitation in absorbing Hashirama's senjutsu chakra while admitting he expected to have some difficulty controlling it due to having no prior training.
Despite all his faults, Madara possessed great love and compassion for his younger brother Izuna. As his other three brothers died in battle, Madara became extremely protective of Izuna and swore that he would never let him die. Tobirama later noted that his grief of losing him is what started his descent into the dark path he chose, not unlike many other members of the Uchiha clan such as Obito and Sasuke. Madara also became angry when Hashirama mentioned the words "our brothers" during their battle. Despite the fact Hashirama meant the entire Senju and Uchiha clan and the villagers of Konoha, Madara took offence to it.

  +
In the later years of his developing the Eye of the Moon Plan, Madara became pessimistic about human nature, believing the cycle of battle to be inescapable. He also came to believe that humanity and the world are incapable of changing from what they were in the past. He believed the current, "worthless" reality was built too much on the idea of winning and losing. For this reason he was deeply committed to his plan, so much that he would prematurely end a fight he was enjoying or kill any threat, even his own clansmen, for the sake of its success. Despite this, Madara was simply acting on what he believed would benefit humanity as a whole, showing his time in Konoha did indeed influence his actions and he wasn't acting simply out of bloodlust after Izuna's death. His plan's ultimate failure made him see its errors: breaking free of his Curse of Hatred, and admitted the superiority of Hashirama's methods for peace. He and Hashirama were thus able to reconcile their friendship in the moments just before his death.
As an old man, Madara seemed to be very bitter and disillusioned about reality, noticing that in this world someone always must be the "loser" so someone other can be the "winner", likely referring to his constant streak of failures against Hashirama Senju. This is what motivated him to wish to change the world via the Eye of the Moon Plan, and he would pass on this mindset to Obito. After his reincarnation, Madara noted that Obito had become much like him, in both actions and attitude — something which Madara seemed pleased about.

Madara was a fair-skinned man with spiky, black hair that had a slight blue tint to it. In his childhood, his hair was chin-length that parted to frame the sides of his face. His casual attire consisted of a blue long sleeve shirt and white pants. While on the battlefield he wore the standard Uchiha outfit: a black shirt with a high-collar left slightly open and the clan's crest on its back, with blue pants and bandages around his shins. Around his waist he had a white sash that held a sack, presumably containing his ninja tools. Later, his sash was replaced by a belt, adorned with pouches and various weapons. As an adult, Madara is fairly tall while his hair grew to waist-length with shoulder-length bangs framing the sides of his face, covering most of his right eye. He has several scars throughout his body. Although still relatively young, more prominent creases had developed under each of his eyes. At times, he wore crimson armour with numerous metal plates, forming protective guards along his chest, waist, shoulders and thighs. Most of the time, however, he continued wearing the same basic Uchiha outfit: a blue high-collared, long sleeve mantle that splits down the lower half and a simple, light-brown obi and a belt. During battle, he often carried an orange-brown gunbai which had a long black chain running up it. At one point, he wore a Konohagakure forehead protector. The anime also shows him wearing a metal belt, as well as a brown leather sash to hold some of his other weapons, and a pair of belt sashes to hold two of his swords.

By adulthood, his hair had grown to waist-length with shoulder-length bangs framing the sides of his face, covering his right eye entirely. Although still relatively young, more prominent creases had developed under each of his eyes. In most cases, his attire took the form of the standard shinobi dress of his era, consisting of bright red traditional armour — similar to that of samurai — worn over a simple black suit. This armour was constructed from numerous metal plates, formed into multiple protective guards along his body, in particular: chest, waist, shoulders and thighs. Unusually, his chest plate left his back entirely exposed, presumably so as to better display his clan's crest. This clothing was accompanied by boots and gloves, as well as his village's forehead protector after the truce with the Senju and founding of Konohagakure, but this was discarded upon his defection. During battle, he often carried an orange-coloured war fan on his back that had a mitsudomoe pattern, coloured bright red, in both of the top corners. In his old age, Madara appeared extremely worn, with his black hair from his youth turned thin and white. He wore a simple black outfit, and had three thick chords running from his spine, to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to sustain his life. He was also missing a right eye, and used his kama as a makeshift cane.

In his old age, Madara became extremely worn and emaciated, with his hair turned thin and white, and lost all his teeth. Madara was reincarnated by Kabuto Yakushi, and took on a youthful appearance as opposed to when he had died as an old man. After becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Madara gains the appearance of an Ōtsutsuki; having white hair (taupe in the Naruto: Colour Edition), pale skin, and he became enveloped by a cloak of chakra that manifests into physical clothing: a full-bodied black garment with black pants, gloves, and boots, over which he wore a flowing white robe with six black magatama markings across his chest and the familiar pattern of a black Rinnegan and nine black magatama markings in rows of three on his back. A grey horn-like protrusions grew out of his left temple and overlapped his forehead akin to a protector with an upward-curve on the right temple, giving him an overall appearance very similar to that of the Sage of the Six Paths. After absorbing the recreated Ten-Tails produced by Obito, Madara obtained additional black magatama markings around his sleeve cuffs and the rim of his robe. He reverts to his former appearance after the Ten-Tails is removed from his body.

Madara was one of the most powerful shinobi in history, recognised as the strongest Uchiha ever produced even decades after his death. A child prodigy, he killed several adult Senju before he had awakened his Sharingan. He was the only one able to push Hashirama Senju, a "God of Shinobi", to his absolute limits. When Obito operated under Madara's name, fear of Madara's power forced the Five Great Shinobi Countries, and the neutral Land of Iron, to band together, as it was noted Madara's name itself was power. Madara was able to, respectively, singlehandedly defeat the Five Kage and the nine tailed beasts. He was also confident he could overpower Obito - then the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki - something it took the combined Allied Shinobi Forces to accomplish.
Madara is considered by many notable individuals to be one of the most gifted shinobi in history and the most powerful shinobi that the Uchiha clan has ever produced. Even as a young child, he was noted by Butsuma Senju as a skilled prodigy who managed to kill several older and more experienced shinobi of the Senju clan; a feat he accomplished before awakening his Sharingan. The fact that he was able to clash with Hashirama Senju, who was recognised as the strongest shinobi in the world in his time, also indicates that Madara was also one of his the strongest ninja of his time.

Chakra and Physical Prowess
Overall, Madara's fame and status was so great that his name alone was enough to incite terror, and Tobi was able to use that to his advantage to instigate a world war. Madara's very presence in the battlefield during the Fourth Shinobi World War was menacing enough to compel the five Kage to confront him together, feeling any less than their combined efforts would not be enough to stop Madara. He, in fact, proved to be so overwhelmingly powerful that he was able to overpower the five Kage multiple times by himself without even using the full extent of his powers and leave them in a state of awe and fear when he manifested his final Susanoo. Tsunade was so baffled by Madara's extraordinary prowess as a ninja that she questioned how it was possible that her grandfather had really defeated such an opponent in the past when they, the five Kage, couldn't do so in the present. This testament to Madara's incredible power was later shown further when he managed to defeat all five of the current Kage single-handedly,

  +
Even by Uchiha standards, Madara was born with very powerful chakra, described as very foul and evil. This is partly because he inherited Indra's chakra. His large chakra reserves allowed him to fight nonstop for 24 hours before collapsing, and in his old age, summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path from its cage in the moon. His chakra control could perform complicated techniques with a single hand seal. He could also quickly absorb and synchronise senjutsu chakra with his own and enter Sage Mode, despite having no prior training in senjutsu. Even when distributing his chakra among 25 wood clones, each still had enough power to threaten the Five Kage.

  +
Madara was incredibly skilled in taijutsu. Against the Fourth Division, he calmly defeated thousands of opponents with physical combat, showing exception agility, reflexes, and coordination to disarm, dodge, and counter attacks from many directions at once. He could strike with precision before his opponent could react, and overpower individuals twice his size. He was fast enough to attack Naruto who was in Sage Mode.
Due to the manner of his revival and the experiments done by Kabuto, Madara retained access to abilities he obtained late in life (like his Wood Release and Rinnegan), while at the same time retaining the youthful body of his prime. After activating the Rinnegan and using it in conjunction with his Susanoo, Madara's abilities led Gaara to wonder if he had the power of a god as he sent a meteorite hurtling towards the Fourth Division.

When Madara was reincarnated, Kabuto Yakushi modified him to be "even greater than when he was alive". He was restored to his physical prime while also retaining the abilities he only had in his old age. In addition, a pale replica of Hashirama's face existed on Madara's left pectoral region, which acted as a medium to channel senjutsu chakra into Sage Mode. It also let him heal most of his injuries in seconds, and allows him the usage of Wood Release. For severe injuries he could not heal, like amputation, Madara could replace his limb with material from a White Zetsu's body. Stemming from having Hashirama's cells in his body, Madara's life-force became powerful enough to not immediately die from having all the tailed beasts extracted from his body.
Madara is a skilled taijutsu fighter since childhood, possessing notable physical strength, great speed, and remarkable reflexes, with his overall skill in this area, matching that of his rival, Hashirama. He was capable of easily disarming a sword-wielding shinobi, before the latter could react. With a single roundhouse kick, he was able to repel a shinobi twice his size into an oncoming group of shinobi, knocking them all off their feet. Even as child, Butsuma Senju was very impressed with how fast Madara could move. As an adult, Madara was able to easily dodge Gaara's high-speed sand attacks, and Mei's close range Lava Release attack. He could even guard himself against Tsunade's kick who had suddenly appeared on the battlefield and later on defending himself against A's punch while the latter was clad in his Lightning Release Armour, without being protected by Susanoo on either occasion.

Chakra Prowess
Madara was noted to have been born with an extremely powerful chakra, even by the Uchiha standards. His chakra, as noted by Kurama the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox was far more sinister than its own. His prowess was also seen during his final battle against Hashirama where he displayed extensive use of his Susanoo, while maintaining control over Kurama, with both actions being extremely chakra taxing, while remaining completely un-fazed by this. Even in his old age, when his strength had waned significantly, he still had enough chakra to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path from its cage on the moon.

Madara was well-versed in a variety of ninjutsu styles: he could use juinjutsu powerful enough to restrict the target's actions, hide within surfaces to avoid damage and traverse the battlefield unnoticed, and through an unorthodox use of the Shadow Clone Technique, fake his death by having a clone act as his corpse. In the anime, Madara showed the ability to levitate.
Nature Transformation
As an Uchiha, Madara was a master of Fire Release nature transformation, displayed in his use of devastating Fire Release techniques such as the Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation technique which required the combination of numerous Water Release: Water Encampment Walls to extinguish, and the Fire Release: Great Fire Destruction technique which he used to incinerate a large portion of the forest he had created. He can also create dragon-shaped fireballs for a wide barrage at an enemy. Naturally, Madara was also able to use the clan's coming-of-age technique: Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique with great proficiency.

  +
Madara was an adept sensor, being able to detect others' chakra signature countries away, determine a person's clan and the nature of their kekkei genkai, and even differentiate species. When amplified by Sage Mode, he could even fight whilst blind by locating targets and dodging attacks through his sensory perception, even avoiding a Flying Thunder God Slash. Also with Sage Mode, Madara's pain tolerance was high, as he neither flinched from Sasuke stabbing his right arm, the tailed beasts' assault, nor from the loss of his arm.
In the anime, Madara could also use Wind Release through his trademark gunbai to create powerful gusts of wind.

After his confrontation with Hashirama Senju at the Valley of the End, Madara acquired some of his cells, which after a long period of adaptation, granted him the Wood Release nature transformation. With this Madara has demonstrated the ability to instantly create numerous massive trees with which to attack his opponents directly, and a dense forest of flowering trees, whose pollen can render a foe unconscious. He is able to merge with and hide within trees. He is also capable of creating single or multiple wood clones using the pre-existing vegetation and wood in the immediate vicinity as a medium. Madara can even use Hashirama's Wood Dragon, which was capable of binding Kurama during his final battle against the Senju leader. This was shown in battle against Naruto, where the dragon managed to completely bind Naruto, Killer B and Guy and absorb the full-Kurama cloak from Naruto's Tailed Beast Mode while growing trees across its length. Using Hashirama's cells, Madara can produce a series of roots from his body that can connect to and grant him control over a tailed beast, even one as powerful as the Ten-Tails. The level of control exerted is apparently linked to the number of roots that are connected to the beast, though he noted that his and Obito's control over the Ten-Tails was not perfect.

Madara's prowess with Wood Release is noteworthy, his skill was noted by both Kabuto and Gyūki to be on par with that of the First Hokage. As a user, Madara can use its component natures: earth and water.

Madara also displayed an extensive knowledge of Yin–Yang Release, its component Yin and Yang as well as techniques which involved this kind of nature manipulation such as Izanagi. Madara noted that the White Zetsu clones were created using the Yin–Yang Release and also used this ability to create Black Zetsu by infusing part of his will into White Zetsu and also infused his will into one of his chakra receivers. He would later teach these techniques to Obito as well.

Within his weapon skills, Madara has shown especial proficiency with kenjutsu since his early childhood and carried various different swords throughout the years. He was shown as a skilled and versatile swordsman, most prominently seen during the Fourth Shinobi World War when he effortlessly disarmed a shinobi, commandeered his sword and used it to cut down several members of the Fourth Division with ease, while wielding the blade in a reverse grip. He displayed great manoeuvrability and dexterity while using kenjutsu. The speed of his attacks were so great that none of the shinobi he killed using this combat tactic had any time to react.

Madara awakened his Sharingan as a child, with one tomoe in each of his eyes. By adulthood, his Sharingan was fully developed and active near-constantly. Madara's mastery over the Sharingan surpassed every other member of the Uchiha clan in his natural lifetime. Only he could tell the difference between a shadow or wood clone, and the original. With brief eye contact, Madara could place targets under genjutsu and paralyse them or relay information. He could even trap the Nine-Tails, and summon it as a powerful tool in battle. By programming one of his eyes to activate Izanagi after his death, he was able to alter reality and resurrect himself.
Madara first awakened his Sharingan as a child, after rejecting his friendship to Hashirama Senju. He was able to master the Sharingan at a young age — a feat which he received significant praise for. Using it, he gains access to the dōjutsu's generic abilities such as seeing chakra, predicting movements, and placing a victim under paralysing genjutsu with just a single glance, leading those who had faced him to advise others to not look directly at his eyes whilst confronting him. Madara is able to use these abilities in conjunction with his primed taijutsu and weapons skills in battle to deadly effects, leaving his opponents with very little time to react or means of defence. The perceptive abilities of Madara's Sharingan were also considerable as he was the only one who could discern Hashirama's use of wood clones when the Uchiha and the Senju fought against each other.

With his Sharingan, Madara is able to control the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox and is also one of the two known people along with Tobi, that are capable of summoning the beast. However, its sealing inside various jinchūriki, presently Naruto Uzumaki, has rendered him unable to summon the beast. He is also capable of using one of his clan's most powerful and forbidden dōjutsu, Izanagi.

Madara and his brother Izuna were the first Uchiha to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. Much later after awakening it, with Madara's own eyesight deteriorating, and Izuna mortally wounded, the latter left Madara his eyes, which then led to Madara obtaining the "Eternal" Mangekyō Sharingan — a combination of his own and Izuna's Mangekyō. Madara considered this a final gift from his brother to ensure the protection of their clan.
+
Madara was the first Uchiha known to have awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. Madara knew about other users' Mangekyō techniques, and was also capable of discerning the mechanics of these techniques with brief observation. The "straight tomoe" of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan granted him fluidity in his movements when fighting.

Madara has since used his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan to control the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. Madara demonstrated the ability to use Susanoo — and is therefore also able to use Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu by extension — though they have yet to be seen. Unseen in others' variations, Madara's Susanoo demonstrates two entirely different sides that are conjoined along the spine, with each displaying a pair of arms, a face that is distinct from the other, and a complete lower half inclusive of feet.

Having awakened both his Mangekyō, Madara could use Susanoo, which he could use even without his eyes in their sockets. The ribcage could withstand an Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan and A's strength. He could produce a legged humanoid Susanoo. With his eyesight deteriorating from overuse, he replaced his original eyes with Izuna's, restoring his vision and gaining the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. With it, he could "stabilise" Susanoo into its Complete Body form, causing it to resemble a tengu with outer armour that was nearly impenetrable. A secondary pair of arms wielded sheathed katana which could be used to bisect mountains with their mere shockwaves. According to himself, its power was comparable to that of the tailed beasts, and no one was said to have lived to see it a second time. Madara's Complete Body Susanoo uses its secondary set of arms for attack and defence rather than flight. He was also able to shape his Susanoo into an armour for Kurama, which synergised their abilities.
His Susanoo's defensive capabilities are high, even in its ribcage state, having withstood Naruto Uzumaki's Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan and A's Lightning Oppression Horizontal Chop with no damage, while Sasuke Uchiha's own Susanoo ribcage was breached by the latter. It wields undulating blades in the right hand of each side, which when used by Susanoo's final form, are durable enough to withstand the impact of a caught and redirected Tailed Beast Ball at close range from Hashirama Senju's Wood Release: Wood Human Technique. Uniquely, it appears to be capable of contributing towards some of Madara's techniques, as it was seen forming hand seals together with him during battle. Madara is also able to use the Yasaka Magatama technique.

After absorbing the God Tree into himself and stealing Kakashi Hatake's Mangekyō Sharingan, he was able to use Kamui on himself immediately to reach Obito and retrieve his Rinnegan still with him. Though brief, Madara's use of the eye was notable on account of being able to use Kamui while the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, something Obito himself couldn't do.

Madara's Susanoo's final form is an enormous construct with its mouth obscured and a body similar to its full body form. The outer armour, which only remotely resembles the usual tengu with armour, and the trademark pillbox hat-like adornment on the forehead is split down the middle from the beak downwards where the normal Susanoo underneath is revealed. Along this armour, which seems much more fluid than the other known Susanoo's, are holes at the end. In its stabilised form, the Susanoo dons an outer armour and a samurai outfit. It also has four arms, two plated ones which hold a pair of katana in sheaths, the other pair of which wields them. According to Madara, this Susanoo's power is comparable with that of a tailed beast and he was able to repel and corner all five of the current Kage, while simultaneously demolishing a large portion of the mountain range behind them with a single sword swing. Madara displayed a unique use of Susanoo, shaping it as an armor to clad Kurama. With this the beast's offensive abilities are increased tremendously as seen by the unique combination of the Tailed Beast Ball with Madara's Susanoo sword.

Years after infusing himself with Hashirama's DNA and unknowingly mixing Indra's and Asura's chakra, Madara's Sharingan evolved into the Rinnegan. As the eyes' original owner, only he could use them to their maximum power. He was able to switch between both dōjutsu. With the Rinnegan, Madara could use all of the abilities of the Six Paths Technique, such as the Preta Path to absorb chakra and the Deva Path to perform Chibaku Tensei. He could also use the Outer Path to create chakra chains that could restrain all nine tailed beasts. and black receivers for various melee and supplementary purposes. Through the usage of his Rinnegan with that of his Sharingan, Madara could summon meteorites to cause widespread destruction.
After integrating Hashirama's cells into his wounds, Madara noted that nothing happened. However when he was nearing the end of his life, he awakened the Rinnegan. With the Rinnegan, Madara can summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.

Madara possesses the ability to switch between both it, and his Sharingan forms at will. However, it should be noted that while using the powers granted by the Rinnegan he has not, except in the case of Susanoo, shown to be able to simultaneously access those granted by the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Like other users, Madara is able to use the Six Paths Technique, displaying use of the Preta Path, with which he was able to absorb chakra-based ninjutsu.
+
While under the Impure World Reincarnation, Madara was unable to use the full extent of his Rinnegan's abilities. After being revived and obtaining one of his actual eyes, he could summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, seal the Ten-Tails inside himself, and generate a corporeal invisible shadow to aid him in battle. While Madara was in Sage Mode and further boosted by Kurama's chakra, this shadow was powerful enough to knock down the tailed beasts. With access to both of his Rinnegan, Madara could produce at least four shadows to aid him.

When these abilities were combined with his Susanoo, he can pull two massive meteorites towards the battlefield from the atmosphere above. Even if the first meteorite was slowed down and stopped, the second one would strike the first, ensuring their collision. Aside from his battle skills, Madara has also displayed high-level intellect, as well as strategic and manipulative skills, shown by his ability to create elaborate plans that span across decades such as the Eye of the Moon and setting up various pawns by playing with and twisting their own ideals, feelings and goals, in order to aid him through direct or indirect ways such as Obito and Nagato respectively.

After sealing the Ten-Tails into his body, Madara had immediately gained complete control over the beast, which was stronger than when it was first revived due to having all of the Eight-Tails and half of the Nine-Tails' chakra sealed in it, leading to his power being noted to feel stronger than Obito's, which only had a portion of the Eight and Nine-Tails' chakra. As such, only shinobi using all of the Eight Gates or the Six Paths Chakra are able to compete with him. In this form, Madara could fly and his physical abilities were enhanced, being fast enough to react to the Flying Thunder God Technique and Kamui, and durable enough to survive the Night Guy. After absorbing the tree form of the Ten-Tails, his regenerative powers could circumvent bisection and restore his body, causing him to declare himself immortal. He could also harness natural energy to enhance his various techniques, as well as cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi and God: Nativity of a World of Trees after he awakened the Rinne Sharingan.

With his transformation, Madara obtained Truth-Seeking Balls that floated behind him in a circular formation, which were comprised of the five basic nature transformations and Yin–Yang Release. Their chakra is highly malleable and versatile, such that he could use them as high speed projectiles, protective barriers, and various weapons, such as a shakujō. With Yin–Yang Release, the balls could nullify all ninjutsu they came into contact with.
He is also an adept tactician as seen when he preferred to use the Ten-Tails matured powers to destroy the Allied Forces HQ in order to cripple their intelligence centre, rather than directly engaging the Allied Forces army. Madara is also versed in psychological warfare, choosing to focus his efforts into breaking his enemies battle spirits through manipulation and intimidation with deliberate displays of his overwhelming power and targeting the enemies that have greater leadership and charisma of a group such as Ōnoki, and Naruto on separate occasions.

  +
Intelligence
As a battle genius, Madara can identify and counter most forms of ninjutsu almost immediately and he is rarely caught off-guard, at which point he quickly adapts to the situation. This knowledge is extensive, intricate and far-reaching to the point where he has inside awareness to the abilities of historical individuals and creatures, such as the Sage of the Six Paths, the tailed beasts and their origin. Madara also appears to be a skilled teacher, as he was able to pass on most of his immense knowledge and skills to Obito, which greatly developed the young Uchiha's abilities and allowed him to emulate Madara's mindset and combat prowess to near-perfection. Madara's intellect and resourcefulness was enough to impress even his rival, Hashirama Senju, who praised the Uchiha leader.

  +

  +
Madara's years of experience on the battlefield honed his strategic ingenuity. He could quickly devise a number of approaches and could switch approaches immediately. The longer he spent against a particular opponent, the less he needed backup tactics, as he could eventually predict what they would do and identify literal or psychological weaknesses to exploit. He could form and verify any theories he comes up with using small details. In addition to his sheer adaptability, Madara was knowledgeable on a large variety of individuals and abilities, and thus could identify techniques when used and react with the most appropriate counter to them. Likewise, Madara was an excellent teacher, having single-handedly trained the young Obito into a powerful shinobi comparable to himself.

A researcher, he experimented on and cultivated a clone flower through the Demonic Statue of Outer Path, and from it, he created a life-support system for himself. He had enough medical knowledge to transplant eyes, treat severe injuries, and could replace destroyed body parts with White Zetsu matter.
Medical Skills
Madara possess an intricate knowledge on genetics and human anatomy as he was able to cultivate cells taken from Hashirama into a mindless clone flower large enough for the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to sit upon which would later serve as the basis to create both the first prototypes of White Zetsu and artificial body parts from it. Using the cultivated cells from Hashirama, he was able to produce and attach tendrils to his back from the clone that allowed him absorb chakra from the Statue, as a makeshift life support system to extend his lifespan.

He has also demonstrated similar knowledge of surgical and medical skills, being able to remove his own eyes and transplant them to Nagato, replacing at least one of his lost eyes with a new one and using the artificial bodies created by the flower clone of Hashirama to replace the destroyed portions of Obito's body, as well as treat the young Uchiha's extensive wounds.

Frustrated when a reincarnated Nagato is sealed by the recently freed Itachi Uchiha, Kabuto finds himself forced to use his trump card but it's only after Naruto Uzumaki takes out several more reincarnated shinobi, that he has Mū summon the reincarnated Madara to the field. Forcefully removing his coffin's lid before voicing his assumption that Nagato had finally used the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to bring him back from the dead, Mū corrects Madara, explaining that Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation had been used instead. Somewhat shocked by the manner of his revival, the two confront the Fourth Division. Upon noticing the forehead protectors of the allied army, Madara asks who is responsible for the Impure World Reincarnation. However, as Mū does not know, Kabuto takes full control and, speaking through him, identifies himself as Tobi's assistant before informing Madara that he had been restored to an extent beyond even his prime. Finding it rather dreary to be spoken to through a pawn, Madara questions Kabuto with what he knew of his prime but admitting his ignorance, Kabuto requests a demonstration.

  +
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kabuto decides to use Madara against the Allied Shinobi Forces and uses Mū as a medium to summon him to the battlefield. When he first becomes aware of his surroundings, Madara believes he has been brought back by Nagato's Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique but soon realises that he instead has been brought back with the Impure World Reincarnation. Kabuto speaks through Mū, introduces himself, and explains recent developments in the world and Tobi's current actions. After Kabuto points out that he has restored Madara to a state beyond his prime, Madara tests his body by tearing through the Fourth Division, thinning its numbers. The Fourth Division's initial attempts to stop Madara fail as he protects himself with Susanoo. When the Fifth Kazekage, Third Tsuchikage, and one of Naruto Uzumaki's shadow clones combine efforts, Madara is forced to activate his Rinnegan and absorb the attack.

Realising his enemies were too dangerous for him to hold back to basic ninjutsu and taijutsu, Madara pulls down a meteorite from the atmosphere. When the Kazekage and Tsuchikage successfully stop it, Madara adds a second meteorite to his attack, both of which fall upon and devastate the Fourth Division. With most of the Fourth Division dead, Madara questions Kabuto about just how far off-plan Tobi has gone. Because Kabuto doesn't actually know much about the plan, Madara is left to check things for himself and tries to summon the Nine-Tails, only to discover it's sealed in a jinchūriki, specifically Naruto. Despite knowing the current Naruto was a clone, he decided to delay his plans to test out his new powers, namely, the Wood Release: Nativity of Trees which Naruto's clone barely countered. He then moves in to finish off the remainder of the Fourth Division but is repelled by the arrival of the Fifth Hokage, the Fifth Mizukage, and the Fourth Raikage. The five Kage combine forces against Madara and propel him from the immediate area.
Given free reign, Madara begins his assault on the spectating Fourth Division, Gaara, Ōnoki and Naruto's shadow clone. Madara uses the Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation technique, which takes the combined efforts of several shinobi to extinguish. Obscured by the resulting steam as he attacks them directly, he commandeers a sword and proceeds to tear through their ranks. As Naruto attacks Madara from above while Ōnoki raises the ground below him, sending him on a collision course, Madara activates his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and uses Susanoo to shield himself from harm. After Gaara uses lightened sand to separate Madara from his protection and to pull him into the path of an oncoming Rasenshuriken, he activates his Rinnegan and uses the Preta Path's ability to absorb the attack. When Kabuto tries to take credit for the improvements to Madara's powers, Madara remarks that he shouldn't get the wrong idea, as they weren't his creation. Together with Susanoo, he then forms three hand seals and pulls an enormous meteorite down from the atmosphere, directing it towards the battlefield.

Unconcerned by the prospect of destroying himself and Mū, aware that they'll both reform afterwards, Madara recognises Ōnoki as he flew towards the meteorite in an attempt to lighten it and stop its descent. Congratulating his and Gaara's successful efforts, Madara questions Ōnoki as to how he would deal with a second one as another meteorite collides with the first, overwhelming Ōnoki and killing the majority of the Fourth Division. After reforming, Madara remarks that he hadn't enjoyed a view such as this in a long time, as he stands amidst the rubble left in the wake of the impact.

By the time he returns, Naruto's shadow clone is gone and the five Kage remain his only opponents. They battle for some time, with Madara equaling and besting the Kage's efforts. When he is hit with the Tsuchikage's Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique, Madara's armour is torn away, revealing the implant of Hashirama's face on his chest. Madara laments Hashirama's legacy that these Kage have inherited, having been completely unimpressed by their attacks, particularly those of the Hokage, Hashirama's granddaughter. Madara then creates twenty-five copies of himself and has them each activate their Susanoo.

By nightfall, the Kage are still alive and are able to pool their efforts so successfully that he is nearly sealed. Finally impressed by their display, Madara responds by summoning his perfected Susanoo. Before he can use it to kill the Kage, his Susanoo starts to fade and Madara is engulfed in light. Madara realises that Kabuto has elsewhere released him from the Impure World Reincarnation and his soul is returning to the afterlife. Madara responds by performing the hand seals to rescind the Impure World Reincarnation contract that Kabuto has over him, enabling him to return to his immortal body without further interference from a summoner. Now able to do whatever he likes and bored with the Kage, Madara decides to go find Naruto and reclaim the Nine-Tails. The Kage try to block his escape.
After reforming, Kabuto informs Madara that he theorised that he had obtained a portion of Hashirama Senju during their confrontation, despite losing to him. Madara then proceeds to check underneath his shirt, after which he complements Kabuto on his preparation, before asking if he knew of their plan. Notified of Kabuto's uncertainty that the "fake" will act accordingly, Madara attempted to summon the Nine-Tails but is unable to do so as it was still sealed within Naruto. Learning that Naruto is from the same clan as Mito Uzumaki, he opted to attack using Nativity of a World of Trees instead of pursuing the real jinchūriki, yet this is countered by the Nine-Tails-empowered Naruto who destroyed the opposing forest, to which Madara commends him.

Lamenting that he didn't get the opportunity to explore his abilities further, Madara belittled the still-defiant Ōnoki, remarking that it was natural for shinobi to spend their entire lives in battle and as such, mankind would be better served sleeping peacefully under an "Infinite Tsukuyomi". Charging towards the few remaining survivors alongside Mū, they are however repelled by Tsunade and A, who had just been transported to the battlefield. Looking on in shock, Madara is confronted by all five of the current Kage.

  +
After defeating the five Kage, Madara finds and reunites with Obito while he's engaged in combat with Naruto, Killer B, Kakashi Hatake, and Might Guy. Madara notices the Demonic Statue undergoing a premature transformation into the Ten-Tails and scolds Obito for being too hasty. After Obito returns Madara's gunbai, Madara creates a wood dragon in an attempt to capture Naruto and Killer B and complete the Ten-Tails. He at one point manages to restrain and drain B of his energy but is overwhelmed by Guy's Daytime Tiger. The Ten-Tails is revived before he can recover, forcing Madara to make do. He and Obito leap onto the Ten-Tails' head and connect themselves to it, granting them control of its actions. Their four opponents put up a resistance but are no match for the Ten-Tails' power. Before the Ten-Tails can finish them off, however, the combined Allied Shinobi Forces arrive to join the fight, with Ino managing to control Obito into redirecting the Ten-Tails' attack.

  +
The Allies are able to immobilise the Ten-Tails, making it an easy target. The Ten-Tails undergoes a new transformation before their attacks can connect, freeing it and letting it block the incoming attacks. Though the immediate problem is solved, Madara realises there's another issue: the Allies are being coordinated too effectively. He and Obito direct the Ten-Tails to attack the distant Allied HQ, something that takes several Tailed Beast Balls due to their lack of control, which Madara attributes to Obito's failure to revive him correctly. Although the Allies' "brain" is killed, the Allies are given one final battle plan in the time it takes the Ten-Tails to hit its target. Obito and Madara try to thin the Allies' numbers before they can get into position and, when that fails, block against the oncoming attack, but the combined forces manage to break through and separate Obito and Madara from the Ten-Tails. With the Ten-Tails now out of their control they must fight the Alliance directly. Obito eventually disappears to the other dimension, forcing Madara to fend for himself.

Deeming this an adequate test of his abilities, Madara leapt upwards to avoid Mei Terumi's attack but was instead intercepted by A, who knocks him into the lava below. Activating his Susanoo to protect himself, he is plunged even deeper into the molten liquid by A, before being completely immersed by another torrent of lava. Emerging unharmed whilst sheltered by his Susanoo, Madara commends A and Mei's respective offensive abilities, before deciding to assess the Kage's defensive capabilities using Yasaka Magatama. However, when his attack is blocked, Madara breaks through their dual-layered defence with his Susanoo's blades, only for his vision to be obscured as the Kage launch another strategy. Unable to react to the quickly approaching A, thanks to Ōnoki's assistance, their combined efforts allow A to punch through Susanoo and hit Madara.

  +
During Obito's absence, Madara senses that Hashirama has elsewhere been brought back to life. Excited at the prospect of fighting his rival again, Madara eagerly awaits his arrival. When he arrives, Hashirama sends only a wood clone to face him, being too busy restraining the Ten-Tails. Madara decides to sit out the fight until the real Hashirama is ready. When the wood clone persists, Madara easily defeats it. Madara later senses Obito's return to the battlefield and decides to make use of one of his fail-safes, activating black receivers planted in Obito to force him to finally revive Madara. Obito resists and instead seals the Ten-Tails into himself.
As the battle continues, Madara repels and destroys Ōnoki's looming golem using Wood Release: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees, distracting the Kage. Ambushing them from behind and knocking them into the forest below with his Susanoo, he sets the trees ablaze, just as the Kage succumb to the effects of the pollen. However, Ōnoki quickly manages to rouse himself and destroy the surrounding flowers, hitting Madara in the process and exposing a face formed from Hashirama Senju's tissue, jutting out of the left side of his chest. Hearing Tsunade's reaction, he questions if she was a descendant of Hashirama, noting his intention to kill her first if she was. When Mei retorts his remark by saying that it was a basic tactic to eliminate the medical-nin first, Madara corrects her, stating he would do it simply because of Tsunade's ancestry before saying that she couldn't delay their deaths anyway. He then belittles Tsunade further for being a woman who, despite being Hashirama's descendant, possessed neither Wood Release nor medical ninjutsu that could compare to those of Hashirama, before declaring that while weak people were ugly, weak Senju were even more so. Tsunade admits to most of what was said but rebuffs Madara's opinion that she was weak, claiming that what she had inherited wasn't just mere strength, but the undying Will of Fire.

Birth of the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki
Rebuking Tsunade's belief that this would lead to his defeat, by saying power was in fact an actual thing, Madara then listens to her retort of how the will of the deceased allowed her to reform the system of medical-nin. Hearing all four rules yet unaware of her technique, he uses his Susanoo to protect himself from Tsunade's punch but when she easily fractures it, Madara considers how her strength was superior to A's. When Madara counters, he is instead repelled by Mei, before his Susanoo is shattered by A and Tsunade. Crashing to the ground, he admits Tsunade wasn't that weak but reprimands her recklessness, as her death would trouble the others. Thinking of how he would have taught Hashirama to resurrect himself if he'd knew how weak shinobi would become, Madara says that all Hashirama left behind was the power he held, similar to how Izuna left only his eyes and their powers. After Tsunade angrily responds, Madara states that if anything could be passed down, it was simply hatred. Later struck by a powerful punch from Tsunade that seemingly allowed him to be bound and sealed, Madara suddenly impales her from below, just as he emerges from within one of the trees. He then reveals that they had instead sealed a wood clone, noting that only he could see through Hashirama's use of the technique in the past due to his ocular powers.

Though he's frustrated by this setback, Hashirama is no longer preoccupied, so Madara forces him into a fight for two reasons: his simple desire to fight his rival once again and he also plans to oppose Obito and take his place as the caster of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. To accomplish the latter however, Madara needs senjutsu chakra, which Hashirama has. As their battle rages, Hashirama tries to convince Madara to postpone, but Madara repeatedly refuses. Nevertheless, he keeps track of Obito's progress and growing control of the Ten-Tails' power. After Obito's defeat, Madara is restrained by Hashirama's wood dragons and the Alliance moves in to seal him.

Pondering his next target, Madara was shocked when Tsunade instead shattered his Susanoo's sword and then attacked him using the broken blade. With the blade stuck in his Susanoo's ribcage, he countered and repelled Tsunade, before noting the similarities between her and Hashirama's techniques. As he questioned whether they thought he could be stopped with his own technique, Madara was attacked from behind by Ōnoki, but he absorbed the Dust Release technique. He then explained that he deliberately let it hit him before, to expose the Hashirama face on his chest in hopes of lowering the Kage's morale, yet he was disappointed to see that it had the opposite effect. When Tsunade stated that while they were outwitted by the wood clone, it could also be said that he had no other option but to use it, Madara blamed it on fighting five Kage-level shinobi at once. Denying that he thought of them as cowards for confronting him together in response to Mei, he asserted that the current odds were the perfect number to have fun and proceeded to create multiple wood clones, sending five to each Kage. Regurgitating Mei's sentiments, Madara asked the Kage not to call him a coward given who they were, before asking whether or not they preferred the clones to use Susanoo or not.

With Obito no longer the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Madara puts another fail-safe into effect: Black Zetsu. Having been in contact with it since his initial reincarnation, Madara orders Black Zetsu to take control of Obito's body and use the Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique. Restored to life, Madara is able to regain his past strength, to which he breaks free of his restraints. Having died with his real eyes intact and removed from his body, Madara's reincarnated eyes crumble to nothing. Sasuke attempts to burn Madara with Amaterasu while Naruto reminds Sasuke that Madara can absorb ninjutsu. Madara however, had to discard his armour that was burnt by the flames. To compensate for his blindness, he immobilises Hashirama with black receivers and absorbs his senjutsu chakra, enhancing his sensory skills enough to perceive his enemies and their attacks without the need of sight. He is once again attacked by Sasuke, but instructs Sasuke to stay out of his way since he does not want to kill his own clansman.

Madara goes after the freed tailed beasts so that he can revive the Ten-Tails once more. He attempts to take on all nine at once, failing and losing his right arm in the process. While he regroups, a White Zetsu clone brings him one of his Rinnegan that Obito kept in storage. Madara takes this and one of the Zetsu's arms, allowing him start round two. He summons the Demonic Statue from Obito's body and uses Limbo: Border Jail to repel the nine beasts. Before they can recover, he seals all of them into the Demonic Statue, including those sealed in Naruto and B. While the Statue undergoes its transformation into the Ten-Tails again, Madara asks the Zetsu clone how Black Zetsu is faring with taking his remaining Rinnegan back from Obito. Tobirama Senju, having been reincarnated alongside Hashirama, attacks Madara immediately afterwards, but is restrained after failing to deal any damage. Sasuke also attacks Madara but is immobilised in midair. Having already warned Sasuke once, Madara turns Sasuke's own sword against him and stabs him in the chest.
Observing the Kage being overwhelmed by his clones and their respective Susanoo, Madara identified the more experienced Ōnoki as the biggest threat when he rescued an immobilised A from certain death. Determined to break Ōnoki's will as the Tsuchikage rallied the Kage to face him once more, Madara was instead forced to flee from the approach of an enormous Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique, as it wiped out his clones. Struck by Mei's attack, which contained both Gaara's sand and A's lightning-natured chakra, Madara's actions were halted long enough from him to start being sealed. Acknowledging the Kage's might, Madara manifested his final Susanoo, freeing himself in the process before telling the awe-struck Kage that they would now learn that even their efforts were futile against Susanoo's perfect form. Stating that only Hashirama could stop him, Madara then stated that Hashirama being dead was in their favour — as he swung one of his katana and repelled them — noting that if he was the only one they had to fight, the damage to the area wouldn't be as devastating (a reference to the battle between the two which created an entire valley) then answering Ōnoki's earlier question that an adult would never seriously fight children. Looming over the Kage with his Susanoo, Madara declared that he would destroy them and their efforts. But at the last second, as he attempted to deal the final blow, Madara's Susanoo suddenly de-materialised, much to his surprise.

With nobody left to oppose him, Madara seals the Ten-Tails into himself once its resurrection is complete. Pleased with himself, Madara sets off to regain his other Rinnegan. Along the way he spits out the Benihisago and Kohaku no Jōhei, Obito having used both as part of his premature revival method. When he arrives at Black Zetsu's location, he discovers that Obito has regained control of his body. Madara tries to reason with Obito, reminding him of all they planned and insisting on the impending effectiveness of the Eye of the Moon Plan. Rather than be convinced, Obito stabs Madara and manages to steal fragments of the One-Tail's and Eight-Tails' chakra from him before using Kamui to escape with Naruto.
At that moment, Kabuto's negation of Impure World Reincarnation occurs as Madara finds a light enveloping him prior to making an attempt to kill Tsunade with a Fire Release technique. Madara's soul then begins to leave its vessel just as Tsunade's Strength of a Hundred Technique was cancelled, but suddenly re-encases in his body and Madara attacks her with his Susanoo sword, only for her to evade the technique while unconscious. After everyone else was sent back to the afterlife following the end of the Impure World Reincarnation, Madara still remained on the battlefield. When the Kage questioned how this was possible, Madara explained that he negated the deactivation of the technique by severing the link between Kabuto and his own soul, by releasing the summoning contract of Impure World Reincarnation, stating that to be the technique's one flaw. Madara then proceeded to criticise Mei for not realising that he was not the kind of person who would let himself be bound by such a technique as that when the latter questioned what was happening. Stating that he is now bored with the Kage, and that using his final Susanoo on them again would be an insult to his power, Madara decides to make his way to Naruto to reclaim the Nine-Tails.

Ten-Tails Revival Arc
While Madara contemplates his next move, he is confronted by Might Guy, a master of taijutsu, which is one of the only effective attacks against Madara in his new form. Guy opens all Eight Gates and hits Madara with the Evening Elephant. Madara is taken by surprise and tries to defend himself, but other Allied Shinobi are able to reduce him to a single Truth-Seeking Ball, leaving him wide open. Madara is thrilled at the prospect of such a challenging fight, and visibly battered but not beaten, forcing Guy to use Night Guy. Madara is nearly killed by the attack, which obliterates the entire left side of his body. Thanking Guy for giving him such an entertaining battle, and acknowledging him as a worthy opponent, Madara decides to show him the ultimate respect by killing him instead of letting him succumb to his injuries. However, the Truth-Seeking Ball that Madara launches at Guy is kicked back at him by a revived Naruto, whom Madara notes has somehow gained power similar to his own.

Though blocked from leaving by Ōnoki, Madara was still able to make his way to were the unmasked Tobi was, noting upon arrival, that the latter seemed to be having fun. After Obito returned his gunbai, having revealed that the Kage weren't left in good condition when Naruto asked what happened to them, and how Obito deviated from the original plan, Madara blocked the stakes Naruto threw at him and repels him with his Uchiha Return technique when Naruto attempted to attack him with a Super Mini-Tailed Beast Ball. He then told Obito to deal with Kakashi and Might Guy, while he dealt with the Eight, and the Nine-Tails, noting that it was not too late to seal them.

Naruto sends Madara crashing through the recreation of the Ten-Tails in its giant tree form, a remnant of Obito's earlier battle. A voice speaks to Madara, telling him to absorb it. Madara does so and becomes stronger, but is met with a new problem: Sasuke, also healed from his injuries, has joined forces with Naruto and is also in possession of new abilities. Despite Madara's efforts, he can do nothing against them. Knowing he needs his other Rinnegan if he's to end the fight, Madara steals Kakashi Hatake's Mangekyō Sharingan and uses it to go after Obito. He stops Sakura Haruno from destroying the Rinnegan, to which Obito responds by sending her back to the real world before Madara can kill her. However, Obito himself is too weak to fight back.
As the battle raged on, Madara attempted to convince Naruto that the Eye of the Moon plan was for the benefit of humanity. However, seeing Naruto unmoved by his explanations, Madara decided to show him no mercy. To that end, Madara used Hashirama's giant wooden dragon technique. The dragon attempted to restrain the newly-manifested Tailed Beast Mode Kurama-shroud, but was bitten into by the beast. As Naruto struggled against the wooden dragon, Madara stopped B and Might Guy from interfering by binding them. Noting that these were also hindrances to Obito, and that he would clean up the battlefield, he manifested his Susanoo and aims one of its swords at the Eight-Tails. This is, however, intercepted by Naruto and Madara was later enveloped in Guy's Daytime Tiger. Shortly after, the Ten-Tails' revival was complete, with it breaking out of Obito's Uchiha Flame Battle Encampment in its incomplete form; Madara laments that he failed to acquire the Eight and Nine-Tails, but prepared to begin the final phase of the Eye of the Moon Plan in spite of that.

  +
To give Obito some final words, Madara first congratulates him for removing the Forbidden Individual Curse Tag he had placed on him. He also reveals his role in the death of Rin Nohara, in doing so admitting that he's been manipulating Obito from the start. With that, Madara takes back his Rinnegan, returning to Obito his left Mangekyō Sharingan. Black Zetsu uses Obito's body to perform Kamui and return them to the real world. Naruto and Sasuke move to attack him as soon as Madara appears, so Madara delays them with multiple Chibaku Tensei. Madara gains proximity to the moon, awakening the Rinne Sharingan in the process, and succeeds in casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Madara then joined Obito, and the two jumped onto the Ten-Tails' head, where each were connected to the massive demon with tendrils which stemmed from the beast. While Madara and Obito have a slight argument on how to handle the beast, as Obito wanted to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi immediately, while Madara wanted to test the beast's power. After the dust settles from a brief skirmish with the Eight and Nine-Tails and due to having focused too much of their attention on controlling the beast, they are ambushed by the Eight-Tails who had been warped overhead the Ten-Tails. After dismissing the name "Allied Shinobi Forces Technique" mentioned by Naruto, Madara declared that arguing the matter was futile, Madara noted that they should simply end the battle. When their opposition's battle strategy was launched and the two Uchiha were buffeted by the Storm Release: Laser Circus technique, though Madara was prepared to deflect the attack, he soon realised it wasn't aimed at them but at the Ten-Tails' eye. With the battlefield soon shrouded in dust and their sensory skills hindered, Madara later stood by — arms crossed and nonplussed — as the Alliance attacked the Ten-Tails, marvelling at the fact that they were able to collaborate so well. Even when members of the Alliance bore down on them, Madara derided their effort while noting that the Ten-Tails would soon reach maturity.

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki Strikes
As Naruto and the shinobi with him start to barrage them with various attacks, Madara realises that he and Obito are being targeted as he decides to pull off their own strategy and target their command centre as the Ten-Tails breaks free while assuming its fully matured form. Telling Obito that they are going to use Hashirama's cells to strengthen their hold on the beast while getting his agreement to intimidate their opposition with its power, Madara has the Ten-Tails fire a series of Tailed Beast Balls that wipe out various villages beyond the war zone. Eventually, returning the favour and justifying it as a basic war-time move, Madara has the Ten-Tails fire at the Allied Shinobi Headquarters with Shikaku Nara and everyone else stationed there leaving them obliterated. Lamenting that he could not control the Ten-Tails well enough yet and that because of it he had failed to knocked out the HQ before Shikaku could finish relaying his plan, Madara states that their current control over the Ten-Tails will only be good enough until its next transformation. Responding to Obito's remark that without becoming its host there would be no way to gain complete control over the Ten-Tails, Madara states that he needs a living body, not a sacrifice's.

The entire world is trapped in a dream and then wrapped into Madara's God: Nativity of a World of Trees. Sasuke is able to save Naruto, Kakashi, and Sakura from the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Seeing them, Madara announces himself the world's saviour, one who has saved the world from itself by replacing the hells of reality with the heavens of dreams. While he is proclaiming his victory, Black Zetsu stabs him in the back. Black Zetsu reveals that it is not Madara's will, but Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's, and that he has taken advantage of him in order to bring about her revival. Black Zetsu transfers from Obito's body to Madara's, completely covering him and forcing him to start absorbing the chakra of those trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi. After dramatically increasing in size, Madara shrinks down until a revived Kaguya is revealed in his stead.

  +
Naruto and Sasuke eventually seal Kaguya in her own dimension, along with Black Zetsu, at which point she reverts into the Ten-Tails and spits out Madara. The Sage of the Six Paths summons Madara and everyone else back to the real world, but he can do nothing to save Madara from his approaching death as a result of having both the tailed beasts and Demonic Statue removed from his body. Madara uses his remaining time speaking to Hashirama, noting that his own dream for peace has died while Hashirama's lives on, and therefore was apparently the better of the two. Hashirama replies that they are still friends despite everything, to which Madara agrees as he dies.
When Obito tells Madara that he can't just destroy himself to destroy them, as it would also mean Obito's demise and that he was at the latter's mercy since he would need him to revive him, Madara comments on his attitude. Hearing that Obito had never thought of him as an ally, Madara asks him what his next course of action will be, and listens as he says they will cripple the forces with despair. Noting how much Obito had become like him, Madara questions silently whether Obito was waiting on a response from Naruto after chiding the young man for allowing his comrades to die. When Madara cautioned Obito against possibly damage to the Ten-Tails, his words are rebuffed as Obito noted that the Ten-Tails had tough skin. After Naruto activates his Tailed Beast Mode and begins to disperse its power to his friends, Madara becomes surprised, recognising his intentions and jokingly remarking that Hinata got a nice power-up from it thanks to Naruto. As the battle continues to progress, Madara laments on the predictability of the alliance's moves after Ino possesses Obito, and predicts that Shikamaru would then use his Shadow Imitation Technique, as the latter binds the Ten-Tails.

Legacy
After Madara noticed that Obito was having trouble breaking Ten-Tails free of the Shadow Imitation Technique, he decided to provide more power. However, the combined efforts of the Alliance foiled his counter-attack. After Obito goaded the Hyūga clan, the entire Alliance — powered by Kurama's chakra that Naruto gave to them — simultaneously attacked Ten-Tails, shocking the Uchiha. Obito and Madara's connections to Ten-Tails were then severed by Naruto and Rock Lee respectively with a Rasenshuriken and a well-placed kick. While his body was reconstructing itself, Madara was forced to retreat from atop the beast.

  +
After his second death, Madara's greatest lasting influence was in Obito's actions, who used Madara's knowledge to create Akatsuki. Several years later, when Obito began operating under Madara's name, the mere possibility that he was truly Madara was enough to unify the ninja of the Five Great Shinobi Countries and trigger the Fourth Shinobi World War.

  +
Madara's actions during life, and even those subsequent actions of Obito, would end up having disastrous effects for the Uchiha clan. Following Madara's betrayal of Konoha, the Uchiha were entirely isolated from any form of control over Konoha's future, chiefly because of the actions of Tobirama Senju. His actions also played a role in Tobirama's growth, who believed that to be Hokage, one must balance between Hashirama's compassion and Madara's ruthlessness. At the time, some Uchiha members saw this as proof of what Madara always feared, but the fears subsided with time. Years later, when Obito causes the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's Attack, Konoha once again becomes suspicious of the Uchiha and the Uchiha once again feel wronged. This time, however, their discontent does not subside. When the Uchiha began planning to overthrow Konoha, the upper echelons of Konoha's government ordered the Uchiha Clan Downfall.
Legacy
Madara Uchiha continued to influence the world, decades after his death. By instructing Obito to carry on his name, the new "Madara" would go on to influence Yahiko to create Akatsuki, while keeping an eye on Nagato's Rinnegan. Obito's actions are all for the sake of the Eye of the Moon Plan Madara designed, included the Nine-Tails' Attack on Konoha which culminated in the deaths of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, with their son Naruto Uzumaki being made into Kurama's jinchuriki. Obito was successfully able to convince mostly everyone that he was in fact the legendary Madara, and used the terror the name invoked to cause the Fourth Shinobi World War with 40,000 deaths of shinobi.

One silver lining of Madara's legacy is the name of Konohagakure, which he himself came up with.
However, Madara's notoriety was enough that Kabuto Yakushi would search for his DNA and reincarnate the famed Uchiha in the prime of life as a bid for strategic dominance in the Fourth Shinobi World War while exposing Obito's deception. This, however, did backfire as Madara released his contract with the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation to carry out the final phase of his plan, seeing his reincarnation as an unfortunate substitute of the intended resurrection which Nagato was supposed to do.

Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara) was the legendary leader of the Uchiha Clan.

Background

Madara apperance

Madara as a child.

Madara was born during the Warring States Period, and was the eldest of Tajima Uchiha's five children.[6] Madara and his siblings grew up on the battlefield waging constant war with the Uchiha's rivals: the Senju. Three of his siblings died young, leaving Madara with only his younger brother, Izuna. Madara and Izuna became very close through their shared loss and constantly competed with each other to get stronger.[7] This, combined with his naturally strong chakra, enabled the young Madara to defeat adult Senju in battle and develop a reputation as a genius.[8]

During his infrequent downtime, Madara met a boy his own age named Hashirama. The two quickly developed a friendly rivalry, be it skipping stones or urinating in rivers. Like Madara, Hashirama was also a shinobi who had lost his brothers on the battlefield. Together they imagined a world where children like themselves wouldn't need to fight.[9] As a precaution, Madara and Hashirama did not divulge their family names, but nevertheless discovered each other's identities: Madara was an Uchiha, Hashirama was a Senju; it was their duty to kill each other, even if they were friends. Needing to choose between his family and his dreams of peace, Madara chose to end his friendship with Hashirama so he would have no reservations over killing him in the future, a resolve strong enough to awaken his Sharingan.[10]

Madara and Hashirama combat

Madara and Hashirama clash on the battlefield.

Over the following years Madara and Hashirama continued to meet in combat. Madara could never defeat Hashirama — even after acquiring a Mangekyō Sharingan — and Hashirama could never bring himself to kill someone he still considered a friend, resulting in a constant stalemate between the two that lasted decades. In time, both Madara and Hashirama became leaders of their respective clans, a position Hashirama tried to use to broker peace between them.[11] Although some Uchiha found the offer increasingly tempting, Madara refused due to Izuna's death at the hands of Hashirama's own brother, Tobirama Senju. Madara was moved by Hashirama's gesture and finally assented to peace.[12]

Senju & Uchiha truce

Konohagakure is formed.

The Senju, the Uchiha, and all their affiliated clans came together to found a village of peace, where children would never need to die in battle. Madara and Hashirama rekindled their childhood friendship, and Madara named that village Konohagakure, seeing it through leaves.[13] But Madara's idea of peace differed from Hashirama's: where Hashirama envisioned cooperation with the other newly-formed villages, Madara desired control so the peace could never be lost, evidenced by his attacking Iwagakure's and Ōnoki so that they would submit to Konoha's authority.[14] When Hashirama was elected as Hokage, Konoha's leader, Madara also became concerned for the Uchiha's future, believing this to be but the first step in the Senju's dominance.[15]

Hashirama vs Madara

Madara with the Nine-Tails battling Hashirama.

The Stone Tablet Zetsu altered[16] had been in the Uchiha's possession for generations and was brought with them when they settled in Konoha. Through careful study, Madara was able to decipher enough of it to learn of the history of shinobi: of the endless cycle of failed peace and the destiny of battle between Uchiha and Senju, but also a means of unity for the world.[17] With this knowledge, Madara decided Konoha was a failed experiment. He tried to convince his own clan and even Hashirama of the same conclusion, but none would hear him.[18] Madara chose to abandon the village, attacking Konoha on multiple occasions,[19] later returning with the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox under his control to challenge Hashirama.[20] They fought to exhaustion, and from the carnage of their battle the Valley of the End was formed.[21] In the end, Madara was killed by Hashirama.[22]

Madara Awakening Rinnegan

An elderly Madara awakens the Rinnegan.

With the Rinnegan, he was able to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, which he used to cultivate a mindless living clone of Hashirama from which he believed he had produced a White Zetsu Army.[23]

Over the years, Madara had perfected his plans for peace in what he called the Eye of the Moon Plan. But as his years waned, Madara knew he couldn't complete his plans in the time he had left. So he transplanted his Rinnegan into a young Nagato without the boy's knowing,[23] intending Nagato to someday use the eyes to restore Madara to life. If Nagato was to do this, however, Madara would need an agent to act on his behalf and guide Nagato towards this ultimate goal. Madara waited, connecting himself to Demonic Statue to keep him alive until someone could be found.[24] Madara spent this time keeping a close eye on Konoha to find a suitable pawn to take his place.

Madara saves Obito

Madara meeting Obito Uchiha.

He then manipulated events so that Rin would die at the hand of Obito's friend, Kakashi Hatake, while Obito watched.[25] Driven to despair, Obito offered his services to Madara. Madara divulged to Obito the history of the Sage of the Six Paths and the Ten-Tails, the details of his Eye of the Moon Plan, and various techniques that Obito would need moving forward. As a final act, he left behind Black Zetsu — what he believed to be a manifestation of his will — to provide additional guidance to Obito in pursuit of this goal. With that, Madara disconnected from the Demonic Statue and, with his dying breath, entrusted Obito with his name: Madara Uchiha.[26]

Personality

Madara's rage

The childhood dynamics between Madara and Hashirama.

Madara's childhood was a product of the times he lived in: the constant fighting made him a perfectionist that would keep at something until he mastered it, and his triumphs on the battlefield made him very confident in his abilities and talent.[27] Whenever one of these personality traits was challenged, as they tended to be by Hashirama, Madara's competitive streak would emerge. Madara did not mind Hashirama's influence in this regard; he believed that the only way to survive in the shinobi world was to make allies with one's enemies.[28] His exposure to Hashirama is credited for Madara not experiencing the Uchiha's "Curse of Hatred" or at the very least, not being victimised by it as much as Izuna was and even though he claimed to have abandoned his friendship with Hashirama, Madara still held onto their friendship subconsciously.[29] Madara's actions and beliefs were singularly focused on protecting Izuna, his only surviving brother.[30] So long as he had Izuna, Madara was reasonable and kind, willing to make concessions for a perceived greater good.[31]

Hontō no Yume

Madara's descent into darkness.

Madara changed after Izuna's death, becoming bitter towards the Senju, particularly Hashirama since he still had a brother. Embracing his clan's Curse of Hatred, he opted to die for revenge rather than compromise or forgive.[32] Although he was briefly convinced to set aside his grief and try to replace Izuna with the collective family of Konoha, he could never shake the feeling that he was betraying Izuna's memory. The increasing isolation of himself and other Uchiha from village politics ultimately convinced him of this, causing him to fully break with any other attachments.

During his time as a Konoha shinobi, Madara did what he thought was in the village's best interests. Unlike Hashirama's compassionate methods, Madara took a merciless approach: the shinobi of Iwagakure only had purpose so long as they swore unwavering allegiance to Konoha.[33] Since their methods were so different, Madara hated to hear Hashirama's name during diplomatic discussions.[33][34] After his defection from Konoha, Madara's priorities became centred around the Eye of the Moon Plan, manipulating countless others in order to satisfy his own goals and putting in place multiple layers of contingencies so that nobody could ever diverge from his own intentions. Despite this, Madara genuinely believed this plan would in fact, benefit the world and simply followed an "ends justifies the means" principle.

As he valued only power and possessed so much of it, Madara therefore disliked to waste it on unworthy causes or unchallenging opponents, claiming disgust when he was forced to.[35]

Madara loved fighting above all else: the sights, the sounds, even the taste of his own blood, occasionally describing his battles as "dances";[36] he felt being reincarnated deprived him of the full experience. In addition, if such an opponent is about to die, he would show them the ultimate respect by taking the time and effort to finish them off himself, even if said person is going to die on their own.[37] Stemming from this, he feels insulted if he knows an opponent isn't using their full power against him, even if he knows it will result in their death.[38] He also held the Senju to a higher standard in terms of power due to his encounters with Hashirama, stating a weak Senju disgusts him more than a weak shinobi of any kind.

Madara senses Hashirama

Madara's reaction after sensing Hashirama's chakra.

One of the exceptions Madara makes was Hashirama. Their years of rivalry left Madara with competing feelings of respect and resentment for Hashirama. Madara considered Hashirama the only opponent worthy of his time and would postpone his own plans if it meant prolonging his time to fight with Hashirama without issue.[39] Despite this, Madara is quite open-minded about recognising other strong individuals besides Hashirama, as when he declares Might Guy as the strongest taijutsu user he's ever faced.[40]

Despite his prowess and intellect, Madara is not without moments of recklessness. When he was brought back to life, he showed no hesitation in absorbing Hashirama's senjutsu chakra while admitting he expected to have some difficulty controlling it due to having no prior training.

In the later years of his developing the Eye of the Moon Plan, Madara became pessimistic about human nature, believing the cycle of battle to be inescapable.[41] He also came to believe that humanity and the world are incapable of changing from what they were in the past.[42] He believed the current, "worthless" reality was built too much on the idea of winning and losing.

Appearance

Madara was a fair-skinned man with spiky, black hair that had a slight blue tint to it. In his childhood, his hair was chin-length that parted to frame the sides of his face. His casual attire consisted of a blue long sleeve shirt and white pants. While on the battlefield he wore the standard Uchiha outfit: a black shirt with a high-collar left slightly open and the clan's crest on its back, with blue pants and bandages around his shins. Around his waist he had a white sash that held a sack, presumably containing his ninja tools.[7] Later, his sash was replaced by a belt, adorned with pouches and various weapons. He also wore another sash strapped across his shoulders which he used to hold his swords.[43]

As an adult, Madara is fairly tall while his hair grew to waist-length with shoulder-length bangs framing the sides of his face, covering most of his right eye. He has several scars throughout his body.[44][45] Although still relatively young, more prominent creases had developed under each of his eyes. At times, he wore crimson armour with numerous metal plates, forming protective guards along his chest, waist, shoulders and thighs. Most of the time, however, he continued wearing the same basic Uchiha outfit: a blue high-collared, long sleeve mantle that splits down the lower half and a simple, light-brown obi and a belt.[46] During battle, he often carried an orange-brown gunbai which had a long black chain running up it. At one point, he wore a Konohagakure forehead protector.[47] The anime also shows him wearing a metal belt, as well as a brown leather sash to hold some of his other weapons, and a pair of belt sashes to hold two of his swords.

In his old age, Madara became extremely worn and emaciated, with his hair turned thin and white, and lost all his teeth. He wore a simple black outfit and used his kama as a makeshift cane.[48][49] When Madara was reincarnated his body's youth was restored, albeit with the generic effect of gaining grey sclerae and minor cracks all over his body. These disappear once he is properly revived.

He reverts to his former appearance after the Ten-Tails is removed from his body.[50]

Abilities

Tengai Shinsei

Madara's power being compared to that of a god.

Madara was one of the most powerful shinobi in history, recognised as the strongest Uchiha ever produced even decades after his death.[51][52] A child prodigy, he killed several adult Senju before he had awakened his Sharingan.[53] He was the only one able to push Hashirama Senju, a "God of Shinobi", to his absolute limits.[54][55] When Obito operated under Madara's name, fear of Madara's power forced the Five Great Shinobi Countries, and the neutral Land of Iron, to band together, as it was noted Madara's name itself was power.[56] Madara was able to, respectively, singlehandedly defeat the Five Kage[57] and the nine tailed beasts.[58] He was also confident he could overpower Obito - then the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki - something it took the combined Allied Shinobi Forces to accomplish.[59]

Chakra and Physical Prowess

Madara captures Hashirama

Madara absorbing a restrained Hashirama's senjutsu chakra.

Even by Uchiha standards, Madara was born with very powerful chakra,[43] described as very foul and evil.[60][61] This is partly because he inherited Indra's chakra.[62] His large chakra reserves allowed him to fight nonstop for 24 hours before collapsing,[63] and in his old age, summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path from its cage in the moon.[64] His chakra control could perform complicated techniques with a single hand seal. He could also quickly absorb and synchronise senjutsu chakra with his own and enter Sage Mode, despite having no prior training in senjutsu.[65] Even when distributing his chakra among 25 wood clones, each still had enough power to threaten the Five Kage.

Madara was incredibly skilled in taijutsu. Against the Fourth Division, he calmly defeated thousands of opponents with physical combat, showing exception agility, reflexes, and coordination to disarm, dodge, and counter attacks from many directions at once. He could strike with precision before his opponent could react, and overpower individuals twice his size.[66] He was fast enough to attack Naruto who was in Sage Mode.[67]

Body Modifications

Madara's body modifications

When Madara was reincarnated, Kabuto Yakushi modified him to be "even greater than when he was alive". He was restored to his physical prime while also retaining the abilities he only had in his old age.[68] In addition, a pale replica of Hashirama's face existed on Madara's left pectoral region,[69] which acted as a medium to channel senjutsu chakra into Sage Mode. It also let him heal most of his injuries in seconds,[70] and allows him the usage of Wood Release. For severe injuries he could not heal, like amputation, Madara could replace his limb with material from a White Zetsu's body.[71] Stemming from having Hashirama's cells in his body, Madara's life-force became powerful enough to not immediately die from having all the tailed beasts extracted from his body.

Ninjutsu

Madara was well-versed in a variety of ninjutsu styles: he could use juinjutsu powerful enough to restrict the target's actions,[72] hide within surfaces to avoid damage and traverse the battlefield unnoticed,[73] and through an unorthodox use of the Shadow Clone Technique, fake his death by having a clone act as his corpse.[74] In the anime, Madara showed the ability to levitate.[75]

Madara was an adept sensor, being able to detect others' chakra signature countries away,[34] determine a person's clan and the nature of their kekkei genkai,[76] and even differentiate species.[77] When amplified by Sage Mode, he could even fight whilst blind by locating targets and dodging attacks through his sensory perception,[78] even avoiding a Flying Thunder God Slash.[79] Also with Sage Mode, Madara's pain tolerance was high, as he neither flinched from Sasuke stabbing his right arm, the tailed beasts' assault, nor from the loss of his arm.[80]

Bukijutsu

MadaraChakra

Madara could use many weapons, such as giant shuriken, a kama, chains with weights, a kusarigama, and hand-held shuriken.[81] He also demonstrated proficiency with swords while fighting the Fourth Division.[82] His trademark weapon was his gunbai, with which he could shield himself[83] and redirect attacks,[84] or wield it like a mace or flail.[85] He could slice through the giant roots of the Ten-Tails' tree form with it.[86]

Nature Transformation

Katon Gōka Mekkyaku

Madara was able to utilise all five basic nature transformations, as well as Yin–Yang Release.[2] An Uchiha, he had a natural affinity for Fire Release, being able to produce a massive flames that required several Water Release users together to repel,[87] launch a volley of dragon-shaped fireballs,[88] or cover an area with ash as a smokescreen.[89] In the anime, Madara could create powerful gusts with his gunbai to repel an entire platoon.[90] Later in his life, he used Yin–Yang Release to amplify White Zetsu, and pour his will into black receivers which could restrict and control targets.[91]

After transplanting Hashirama's DNA, which was later augmented further by Kabuto, Madara could use Wood Release, a mixture of water and earth-natured chakra, with his skill and power comparable to Hashirama himself.[92] He could create gigantic flowering trees to render foes unconscious,[93] wood clone,[94] and wood dragons which could bind targets and drain their chakra.[95] With Hashirama's cells, Madara could also produce roots to connect to and gain limited control of the Ten-Tails.[96] After becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, he could use Yin Release to create lightning bolts, and Storm Release – a mixture of water and lightning-natured chakra – to create energy beams that could cut through the Six Paths Rods.[97]

Dōjutsu

Sharingan

Madara's Sharingan

Madara's Sharingan.

Madara awakened his Sharingan as a child, with one tomoe in each of his eyes.[10] By adulthood, his Sharingan was fully developed and active near-constantly. Madara's mastery over the Sharingan surpassed every other member of the Uchiha clan in his natural lifetime. Only he could tell the difference between a shadow or wood clone, and the original.[98] With brief eye contact, Madara could place targets under genjutsu and paralyse them or relay information.[99] He could even trap the Nine-Tails, and summon it as a powerful tool in battle. By programming one of his eyes to activate Izanagi after his death, he was able to alter reality and resurrect himself.[74]

Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara's Mangekyo Sharingan

Madara's Mangekyō Sharingan.

Madara was the first Uchiha known to have awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. Madara knew about other users' Mangekyō techniques, and was also capable of discerning the mechanics of these techniques with brief observation.[100] The "straight tomoe" (直巴, Choku Tomoe) of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan granted him fluidity in his movements when fighting.[101]

Madara's Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan

Madara's Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.

Having awakened both his Mangekyō, Madara could use Susanoo, which he could use even without his eyes in their sockets.[102] The ribcage could withstand an Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan and A's strength.[103][104] He could produce a legged humanoid Susanoo. His Susanoo wielded up to four undulating blades that could be thrown and controlled remotely.[105] He could also fire Yasaka Magatama of varying sizes.[106] When fully produced, Madara would hover inside Susanoo to grant him a greater range of movement.[93]

Complete Body — Susanoo

Madara's Complete Body — Susanoo.

With his eyesight deteriorating from overuse, he replaced his original eyes with Izuna's, restoring his vision and gaining the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.[107] With it, he could "stabilise" Susanoo into its Complete Body form, causing it to resemble a tengu with outer armour that was nearly impenetrable.[108] A secondary pair of arms wielded sheathed katana which could be used to bisect mountains with their mere shockwaves.[109] According to himself, its power was comparable to that of the tailed beasts, and no one was said to have lived to see it a second time.[110] Madara's Complete Body Susanoo uses its secondary set of arms for attack and defence rather than flight. He was also able to shape his Susanoo into an armour for Kurama, which synergised their abilities.[111]

After absorbing the God Tree into himself and stealing Kakashi Hatake's Mangekyō Sharingan, he was able to use Kamui on himself immediately[97] to reach Obito and retrieve his Rinnegan still with him. Though brief, Madara's use of the eye was notable on account of being able to use Kamui while the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, something Obito himself couldn't do.

Rinnegan

Madara's Rinnegan

Madara's Rinnegan.

Years after infusing himself with Hashirama's DNA and unknowingly mixing Indra's and Asura's chakra, Madara's Sharingan evolved into the Rinnegan.[23] As the eyes' original owner, only he could use them to their maximum power.[112] He was able to switch between both dōjutsu. With the Rinnegan, Madara could use all of the abilities of the Six Paths Technique,[113] such as the Preta Path to absorb chakra[114] and the Deva Path to perform Chibaku Tensei.[115] He could also use the Outer Path to create chakra chains that could restrain all nine tailed beasts.[116] and black receivers for various melee and supplementary purposes. Through the usage of his Rinnegan with that of his Sharingan, Madara could summon meteorites to cause widespread destruction.[117]

While under the Impure World Reincarnation, Madara was unable to use the full extent of his Rinnegan's abilities. After being revived and obtaining one of his actual eyes, he could summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path,[118] seal the Ten-Tails inside himself,[119] and generate a corporeal invisible shadow to aid him in battle. While Madara was in Sage Mode and further boosted by Kurama's chakra, this shadow was powerful enough to knock down the tailed beasts.[120] With access to both of his Rinnegan, Madara could produce at least four shadows to aid him.[121]

Rinne Sharingan

Rinne Sharingan

Madara's Rinne Sharingan.

As the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki and with both of his Rinnegan, Madara approached the moon and awakened a Rinne Sharingan on his forehead, which he could use to reflect the eye onto the moon, allowing him to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi and trap everyone, aside from himself, in an infinite genjutsu.[122]

Jinchūriki Transformations

Madara's New Form

Madara's final jinchūriki transformation.

After sealing the Ten-Tails into his body, Madara had immediately gained complete control over the beast, which was stronger than when it was first revived due to having all of the Eight-Tails and half of the Nine-Tails' chakra sealed in it, leading to his power being noted to feel stronger than Obito's, which only had a portion of the Eight and Nine-Tails' chakra.[123] As such, only shinobi using all of the Eight Gates or the Six Paths Chakra are able to compete with him.[124] In this form, Madara could fly and his physical abilities were enhanced, being fast enough to react to the Flying Thunder God Technique and Kamui,[125] and durable enough to survive the Night Guy. After absorbing the tree form of the Ten-Tails, his regenerative powers could circumvent bisection and restore his body, causing him to declare himself immortal.[126] He could also harness natural energy to enhance his various techniques, as well as cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi and God: Nativity of a World of Trees after he awakened the Rinne Sharingan.

With his transformation, Madara obtained Truth-Seeking Balls that floated behind him in a circular formation, which were comprised of the five basic nature transformations and Yin–Yang Release.[127][128] Their chakra is highly malleable and versatile, such that he could use them as high speed projectiles,[129] protective barriers,[130] and various weapons, such as a shakujō.[131] With Yin–Yang Release, the balls could nullify all ninjutsu they came into contact with.[132]

Intelligence

Edo Tensei Release

Madara rescinds the Impure World Reincarnation contract.

He could form and verify any theories he comes up with using small details.[97] In addition to his sheer adaptability, Madara was knowledgeable on a large variety of individuals and abilities, and thus could identify techniques when used and react with the most appropriate counter to them. Likewise, Madara was an excellent teacher, having single-handedly trained the young Obito into a powerful shinobi comparable to himself.

A researcher, he experimented on and cultivated a clone flower through the Demonic Statue of Outer Path, and from it, he created a life-support system for himself.[133] He had enough medical knowledge to transplant eyes, treat severe injuries, and could replace destroyed body parts with White Zetsu matter.[134]

Madara Reanimated

The contents of the sixth coffin.

Tobi, acting under Madara's name, moves into the final stages of the Eye of the Moon Plan by initiating a Fourth Shinobi World War. Before the war's start, Kabuto Yakushi approaches Tobi to try and form an alliance. When Tobi asks what will happen if he refuses, Kabuto resurrects Madara to show he knows that Tobi is not the true Madara and forces him to accept.[135] Tobi reluctantly agrees and Kabuto de-summons Madara.[136]

Madara vs Alliance

Madara arrives on the battlefield with Mū.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kabuto decides to use Madara against the Allied Shinobi Forces and uses as a medium to summon him to the battlefield.

Madara vs Fourth Division

Madara battles the Fourth Division.

Gokage vs 25 Susanoo

Madara overwhelms the Kage.

Madara's soul1

Madara's soul remains intact.

Uchiha's Reunited

Madara reunites with Obito.

Madara refuses to fight Hashirama clone

Madara refuses to fight Hashirama's wood clone.

Madara and Hashirama fight again

Madara fighting Hashirama.

Madara Revived

Madara is properly revived.

Madara stabs Sasuke1

Madara impales Sasuke.

Obito Stealing Chakra

A reformed Obito steals a portion of Madara's tailed beast chakra.

Guy Vs Madara

Madara battling Guy.

Madara vs Naruto

Madara battling Naruto and Sasuke.

Infinite Tsukuyomi Activated

Madara activates the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki Strikes

Madara Inflating

Madara begins to inflate with chakra.

Madara's Final Moment

Madara speaks to Hashirama for the last time.

Legacy

After his second death, Madara's greatest lasting influence was in Obito's actions, who used Madara's knowledge to create Akatsuki. Several years later, when Obito began operating under Madara's name, the mere possibility that he was truly Madara was enough to unify the ninja of the Five Great Shinobi Countries and trigger the Fourth Shinobi World War.[136]

One silver lining of Madara's legacy is the name of Konohagakure, which he himself came up with.

Quotes

 • (To Ōnoki and ) "There is no alliance. From here on, you will obey Konoha! And never, ever say that shinobi's name around me!"[33]
 • (To Tsunade) "You are just a weak woman... Weak people are ugly, and weak Senju are even more ugly."[137]
 • (To Hashirama) "While I walk towards my real dream, I'll enjoy fighting you."[138]
 • (To Kurama) "Nine-Tails, you are merely a momentary life, a temporary existence of coalesced energy… energy that once was a single, ultimate form! An unstable force, lacking in intelligence or sapience, you require a guide to show you purpose. That guide is the Uchiha! The tailed beasts are but slaves to those with blessed eyes. Obey!"[139]
 • (To Obito) "This world is full of things that don't go as you wish. The longer you live the more you realise reality is just made of pain, suffering, and emptiness… Listen… In this world, whenever there is light, there are also shadows. As long as the concept of winners exist, there must also be losers. The selfish desire of wanting to maintain peace causes wars and hatred is born to protect love."[140]
 • (To Obito before dying for the second time) "Go… until the time… I revive… you are Madara Uchiha."[141]
 • (To Tobirama) "Hashirama's country was a shameful contradiction… Man seeks peace, yet at the same time yearning for war… Those are the two realms belonging solely to man. Thinking of peace whilst spilling blood is something only humans can do. They're two sides of the same coin. To protect something… another must be sacrificed. That is, other than that of, say a dream world."[142]
 • (To Obito) "I taught you that in order to control people, you need to use the darkness in their hearts. And if there's no darkness, then you just create it… […] From the bottom of your heart, you felt kindness and sympathy for others. […] Your deep feelings… …for Rin… …your comrades… …the Hokage and the shinobi… All you needed to do was to fall once, and all that would turn around into deep hatred for the world."[143]
 • (To Naruto) "I just stopped the fate of this world. I freed people from pain, suffering, emptiness. […] Naruto… You're getting in the way of everyone's happiness. Our game ends here. I turned hell into heaven. You should understand… It's already over."[144]
 • (Last words to Hashirama) "As comrades, huh… Well… if that's how… we… will…"
