(This technique just produces a clone which can be used for offense or defense but it's not being used for either directly. So it's just supplementary.)

This article is about the technique. For chapter 659, see Limbo: Border Jail…!!.

Limbo: Border Jail is a technique which is accessible through the power of the Rinnegan.

Usage

The user projects shadows of themselves into the invisible world known as Limbo (輪墓, Rinbo, literally meaning: Wheel Grave), which is generally impossible to detect or visually perceive. The shadows can operate independently of the user, attacking and restraining target(s) or defending the original body from harm. Madara's shadow was strong enough to repel all nine tailed beasts in a single instance, while to the naked eye, it appeared to be the act of an invisible force.[2] However, Naruto Uzumaki gained the ability to sense the shadows' presence using the Six Paths Sage Technique, while Sasuke Uchiha was able to see the shadows perfectly with his Rinnegan.[3] With only one Rinnegan, Madara can only produce one shadow. With both his Rinnegan, however, the numbers increase to at least five. Madara is also capable of switching places with his shadows at any time.

Drawbacks

Although they are invulnerable to most physical attacks,[4] techniques which make use of the Sage of the Six Paths' chakra can cause harm to the shadows.[5] The downside to this technique is that the user's shadows, after a set period of time, automatically return to their body and are left temporarily unusable. The shadows can be partially combated by immobilising or sealing the body in a way that it cannot move, act, or be recalled to the user's body. Although this does not truly defeat the shadow, it is effective at neutralizing the immediate threat it poses in battle. If the opponent can also use a physical clone technique and detect the shadows, they can fully distract the clones while the real opponent engages the user, significantly reducing the effectiveness of the technique. The shadows have only been shown using taijutsu.

Trivia

  • Both the first word's furigana Provide an official name and the second word Provide an official name refer to Limbo, with リンボ being the Japanese way of writing Limbo and 辺獄 being an actual translation of the word's meaning.
