Kimimaro using his kekkei genkai.

Kekkei genkai (血継限界, literally meaning: a technique limited to inheritance by blood" or "Bloodline Limit) are abilities passed down genetically within specific clans. It's possible for a shinobi to have more than one of these abilities. Kekkei genkai abilities that work via the user's eye are called dōjutsu. Other kekkei genkai include mixing one type of elemental chakra with another, creating a new one unique to the users, which is usually impossible for normal ninja, or other bodily manipulations that are usually unachievable by normal standards.

Overview

Kekkei genkai and their related techniques cannot be taught to or copied by others. However, kekkei genkai can be given to others. Dōjutsu, or other kekkei genkai isolated to a single organ, can be transplanted into the body of another, as was done with transferring Obito's Sharingan to Kakashi. Use of these organs requires much more chakra than someone born with the kekkei genkai. Chakra elements can also be passed down to people outside of the clan, such as Yamato being subjected to DNA re-modification by Orochimaru who wanted to acquire the Wood Release kekkei genkai. However, Yamato's skill in using it is not nearly as powerful as the originator: Hashirama Senju, and the risk of such process was that Yamato was the only one of the sixty test subjects to survive.[1][2] Kabuto Yakushi managed to gain access to the Kaguya clan's Shikotsumyaku and Sakon and Ukon's Kekkei Genkai by transplanting their DNA into himself, creating a clone of the original wielders connected to his own body and using the abilities through that clone.[3]

Although kekkei genkai are usually genetically shared within a specific clan, sometimes it is unique to one person alone, and that even family relatives do not share it, such as the Wood Release and Shikotsumyaku. Yet other kekkei genkai seem to appear in individuals with no known relation, such as the Lava Release, which has appeared in ninja from Kirigakure, Iwagakure, and Kumogakure, while Magnet Release, which has appeared in ninja from both Kumogakure and Sunagakure, though these kekkei genkai are subject to variation in each village.

There is an advanced variant of kekkei genkai known as kekkei tōta, which is a combination of three different nature transformations.

Main article: Jūgo's Clan's Kekkei Genkai

The kekkei genkai of Jūgo's clan is an instinctual ability which allows its members to absorb and make use of natural energy without any training in senjutsu. A rare trait of the Kurama Clan. Every few generations, a member will be born with an incredible talent for genjutsu. The clan member's prowess in that field is so absolute that even without proper training, their genjutsu is simply overwhelming. Furthermore, the genjutsu is so powerful that it causes the brain to believe anything that happens to the victim to the point where the genjutsu physically harms the victim's body in the same manner they envisioned. This fearsome ability allows the clan member to potentially kill their opponents with genjutsu.

It is said that in times of disorder, one who wields the Rinnegan is sent down from the heavens to become either a "God of Creation" who will calm the world or a "God of Destruction" who will reduce everything to nothingness. The Rinnegan is characterised by concentric circles covering the eyeball.[18]

Main article: Sakon and Ukon's Kekkei Genkai

Sakon and Ukon's unnamed kekkei genkai gives them the unique ability to break their bodies down to a molecular level. The two brothers usually use this ability to share the same body but can also use it to merge with the bodies of others and destroy the host's cells from the inside. When Sakon is in need of assistance, Ukon can bring out some of his body parts to aid Sakon in blocking or attacking. Ukon's arms and legs can emerge from those of Sakon's to increase the force and quantity to his physical attacks.

Senrigan

Senrigan

Main article: Senrigan

The Senrigan (千里眼, literally meaning: Clairvoyance) is a dōjutsu ability that can project one's consciousness to any location to see and hear any present event, even taking place in a different dimension, as well as any past event up to the moment of their birth. They also remain limited by the context of what they can witness as they are unable to understand the information beyond their natural general knowledge. They also cannot perceive events within a separate spiritual or mental plane.

Sharingan

Sharingan Triple

Main article: Sharingan

The Sharingan (写輪眼, literally meaning: Copy Wheel Eye, meaning (Viz): Mirror Wheel Eye) is the dōjutsu kekkei genkai of the Uchiha clan that appears selectively among its members.[20] It is regarded as one of the "Three Great Dōjutsu", the others being the Byakugan and the Rinnegan.[21]

Tenseigan

Tenseigan Symbol

Main article: Tenseigan

Typhoon Release

Nature Icon Typhoon

Main article: Typhoon Release

Typhoon Release (颱遁, Taiton, English TV: Typhoon Style) is a nature transformation kekkei genkai, which consists of at least the wind nature transformation. It seems to essentially be a stronger form of Wind Release, involving the creation of vortexes that decimate the user's surroundings. Its only known user is Nowaki.

Wood Release

Nature Icon Wood

Main article: Wood Release

Wood Release (木遁, Mokuton, Viz: Wood Style) is a nature transformation kekkei genkai, a combination of Earth and Water Release.[23] It was famously used by Hashirama Senju, and in fact is not known to have naturally occurred in anyone else, with the exception of the Ten-Tails, whose true form is the God Tree, leading to it being regarded as impossible to use without having his cells.[24] Because of Wood Release's power and versatility, there have been various efforts to reproduce it after Hashirama's death.

Yanaru's Kekkei Genkai

Main article: Yanaru's Kekkei Genkai

Yanaru possesses a unique Kekkei Genkai, allowing him to mentally exchange information with his shadow clones, just as clones are able to transmit information to the main body. Yanara employs it to coordinate his clones for assassinations, while disguising himself as a member of his target's inner circle, where he acquires the necessary information to carry out the assassination, relaying it to his clones.

Inspiration

The concept of special ninja techniques limited by bloodline inheritance may have been inspired in part by the works of Futaro Yamada, which strongly influenced later depictions of ninja in fiction. In particular, The Kōga Ninja Scrolls (甲賀忍法帖, Kōga Ninpōchō), published in 1959, featured a pair of warring ninja clans that, through selective breeding, had produced ninja with a variety of deformities, mutations, and special abilities, even dōjutsu.

Trivia

  • Kekkei genkai can be preserved through the creation of Human Puppets. This allows them to retain the special traits of the users when they were still alive.
  • When a person is brought back to life via the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation technique, they also retain any kekkei genkai they possessed before their death.
  • A kekkei genkai should not be confused with hiden techniques. Hiden techniques are exclusive to a certain person or clan, but only because they have kept others from learning how to perform those techniques.
