Hinata Uzumaki (うずまきヒナタ, Uzumaki Hinata, née Hyūga (日向, Hyūga)) is a member of Konohagakure's Hyūga and Uzumaki clans. Being of a meek disposition, Hinata's lack of self-confidence reflected in her skills — traits that caused her father to deem that she was not suited for her position as the clan's heiress. From observation of Naruto Uzumaki, Hinata finds both an example to follow to be more assertive, and a person to love. In her membership with Team Kurenai, she sought to become strong enough to change herself, if even a little at a time.

Background

File:Hinata as a child.png

Hinata as a child.

Hinata is the elder daughter of the Hyūga clan head, Hiashi, and as the first-born, was the heiress to the clan's main house. From the beginning, because of her position, Hiashi had high expectations for Hinata and subjected her to long hours of arduous training, leaving little time for Hinata to have a normal childhood. After the end of another conflict between Kumogakure and Konohagakure, one night, Hinata was kidnapped by a head ninja from Kumogakure, who under the guise of striking a peace treaty with Konoha, had actually been sent there to steal the Byakugan. Her father killed the would-be kidnapper to save her, but Kumogakure demanded compensation in the form of Hiashi's dead body due to having signed a peace treaty with the village only moments before. This ultimately resulted in the death of Hinata's uncle, Hizashi, who sacrificed himself in order to protect his clan and village.[9] This incident was particularly significant in shaping Hinata's early relationship with her cousin, Neji.

Hinata vs Hanabi

Hiashi instructs Hinata and Hanabi to fight each other.

After Hinata gained a brutal beating from sparring with Neji, both Hinata's father and grandfather began to doubt her potential, especially when her younger sister Hanabi's own prowess began rivalling Hinata's. Eventually, it was decided Hinata and Hanabi would duel to decide the future heir of their clan. While the two sisters began fighting on par with each other, Hinata soon had an opening to win, but hesitated in not wanting to hurt her sister, to which Hanabi quickly counterattacked and won the duel. As a result, her frailty disheartened her father, which made Hinata lose her position to Hanabi. As her father chose to focus and develop Hanabi, he left Hinata under Kurenai Yūhi's care and protection, deeming her a lost cause due to her lack of drive. Hinata's strained relationship with her father caused her to lose more faith in herself and she would often spend her time alone, crying.[10][11]

Naruto's first encounter with Hinata

Hinata's first encounter with Naruto.

On a snowy day while preparing to enrol at the Academy, Hinata was degraded by a group of three bullies for her Byakugan. Naruto, who had witnessed the event, refused to let them insult her and came to her defence. Since they outnumbered him, the bullies had beaten him up and trampled over his red scarf. Surprised by how much Naruto stood up for someone he didn't know, Hinata thanked him while Naruto let her keep the scarf since it was ruined.[7] Ever since then, Hinata developed a strong admiration towards Naruto, and because he was treated as an outcast by almost everyone in the village, she found herself able to relate with his desire to be acknowledged and praised. She was also amazed that despite having nothing and no one to rely on, Naruto never gave up in believing he could become something great like Hokage. Inspired by his determination, Hinata decided to try her best to become strong so she could be acknowledged as well, and adopted Naruto's nindō of never giving up. Her admiration for Naruto eventually grew into love, despite warnings from her elders to stay away from him.[12]

Personality

Hinata is characterised as serene, thoughtful, kind, and very polite, as noted from her always addressing people with proper honourifics. She is also very gentle, a trait that Neji and her father used to consider a flaw, and dislikes competing and fighting. She is shown to be incredibly empathetic, and because of her upbringing, she was one of the very first people who identified with Naruto's painful childhood and desire to be acknowledged.[13]

Back in her childhood, as a result of her clan's high expectations as their heiress and her father's gruelling training and him deeming her as a failure, Hinata had become very timid and lacked self-confidence.[14] However, she has shown to be a very hard worker as she continuously strived to change herself for the better, though initially this lack of self-confidence would hinder her on missions.[15] As the series progressed, Hinata became more decisive and more open about her opinions, and by the time of the Fourth Shinobi World War, her bravery and self-confidence had extended to the point where she was willing to put her own life on the line for her village, friends, and family.[16]

File:Hinata stays by Hanabi's side.png

Hinata staying by her sister's side, promising to save her.

By the end of Part I, Hinata was able to foster better relations with both Neji and her father and started training with them, as well as growing closer and stronger together as a family.[17] She is especially caring towards her younger sister, Hanabi, to the point where she was hesitant to hurt her, even during their match to determine the heir to their clan.[11] Two years after the war, when Hanabi was captured by Toneri Ōtsutsuki, Hinata went to great lengths to save her, such as reluctantly betraying Naruto.[7]

Hinata is also the closest to her sensei Kurenai, who is not only interested in Hinata's growth as a ninja but also as a person. She knew Hinata's personal struggles and unlike her demanding father, Kurenai tried her best to coach Hinata in ways in which she knew her pupil would best respond. After Hinata was knocked down for the final time by Neji in the Chūnin Exams, Kurenai silently congratulated her student's resolve and perseverance. Kurenai was aware of Hinata's feelings for Naruto and encouraged her to confess to him. At Hinata's wedding, Kurenai was proud of Hinata for achieving her dream of being with Naruto. Hinata gets along well with her team-mates. Kiba has become one of her closest friends, and his actions toward her are often motivated by his concern for her, such as when he urged her to forfeit if she was matched against Neji or Gaara during the Chūnin Exams. Kiba was also aware of her feelings for Naruto, and he had a tendency to tease her a lot about them. Shino possesses a quiet confidence in Hinata, and will make a point of assuring others when they doubt or worry about her.

File:Hinata's Dream.png

Hinata's dream of being beside Naruto and her family.

Hinata's growing self-confidence mainly comes from her long-standing admiration for Naruto, as she is inspired by his determination to never give up, no matter the odds and circumstances against him. In the beginning, Hinata was very shy around Naruto, constantly blushing and stuttering when talking with him, but as the series progressed, she became more comfortable around Naruto and her admiration towards him grew into affection, and eventually she fell in love with him, despite his quirks and how often others criticise him. Hinata also has an unshakeable faith in Naruto, believing that he will one day achieve his goal of becoming Hokage. During Pain's assault on Konoha, Hinata finally confessed her feelings to Naruto and was also willing to risk her life to protect him.[18] After Neji was killed by Obito Uchiha, Hinata, although lamenting over her cousin's death, pulled herself together and prevented the Uchiha from shattering Naruto's spirit by reiterating their shared nindō.[19] Her feelings for Naruto and being alongside him have ultimately become her greatest desire, as shown through the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Two years after the war, Hinata was briefly sullen because she thought she had lost her chance to be with Naruto. Ironically, when Naruto began to realise his love for Hinata, she was oblivious to it like he was to her, and it took him accidentally confessing to her in order for her to recognise this. When Hinata "betrayed" Naruto by "accepting" Toneri's proposal it seemed that she had coldly turned on Naruto, but she was actually deeply hurt by her choice. Once she reunited with Naruto, she apologised to him for her earlier act, but Naruto replied that he understood why she had to do it and he himself should be the one to apologise. After Naruto defeated Toneri and stated that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Hinata, she became so happy that it moved her to tears. After several months of dating, Naruto and Hinata got married and started a family together with a son and daughter.[7][20][21][22] Despite Naruto not returning home as often as he used to before he became Hokage, Hinata remains supportive and understanding of his busy life, but she will at times yearn for her husband to be at home.[23]

After becoming a mother, Hinata seemingly gained a stricter side, having to gently scold her children for being outside in the snow barefoot as they embraced their father. However, she is not above joining in their fun, such as having a snowball fight with them and her husband.[7] Hinata has proven to be very attentive, caring, and protective of her family, as she protected Himawari and even tried to save Naruto during Momoshiki and Kinshiki's attack, and refused to let Boruto go with Sasuke on a deadly mission, but has also shown to be understanding and ultimately chose to believe in her son.[23]

Appearance

Hinata timekip

Hinata in Part II.

Hinata has dark blue hair, fair skin, and gentle facial features - traits that she inherited from her mother. She is usually seen with a shy expression, especially when she is around Naruto. Like the rest of her clan, she possesses the renowned Byakugan which, when activated, stimulates the veins and arteries immediately around her eyes to protrude much more prominently (in the anime, her eyes have a tinge of lavender).

In Part I, her hair was in a short, levelled hime-cut style just above her forehead, with chin-length strands framing her face. She wore a cream-coloured hooded-jacket with a fire symbol on the upper right and left sleeves and fur around the cuffs and hem, with navy blue pants. After earning her genin rank, she wore her Konoha forehead protector around her neck. At the Chūnin Exams finals, Hinata wore a long-sleeved, light blue blouse with a high collar, and dark blue pants. While at home, she was seen in the traditional Hyūga garb, consisting of a simple, loose-fitting robe with different coloured trimmings, and an under-shirt.[24]

In Part II, Hinata retained her straight, hime-style haircut, but she had let her hair grow to reach her lower back, while the short strands that frame her face had grown to shoulder-length. Her figure had also grown to become much more womanly. She also donned an attire comprised of a loose fitting, lavender and cream hooded-jacket with lavender cuffs over mesh armour with navy blue pants and black, low-heeled sandals. Although she still wore her forehead protector around her neck, its colour had changed from blue to black. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, she donned the standard uniform of her village inclusive of flak jacket. Instead of wearing the forehead protector of the Allied Shinobi Forces, she has seemingly opted not to wear one at all.

Hinata Boruto Movie

Hinata as an adult.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War at age 18, Hinata has changed her mission outfit to a slightly more revealing and form-fitting one. She is now seen wearing a light lavender, sleeveless kimono-style blouse with vertical lines, tied with a dark purple obi around her waist. She wears a pair of short dark navy shorts with thigh-high stockings, revealing parts of her upper thighs, and has changed her regular ninja sandals to black high-heeled boots. Hinata's hair also increased slightly in volume and grows to hip-length. She also no longer wears her forehead protector. While off-duty, she wears a grey long-sleeved shirt underneath a pink shirt, black pants underneath a long cream-coloured skirt with pink horizontal stripes, and a pair of brown sandals. She is also seen wearing a lavender hooded-jacket. After Hinata was brainwashed by Toneri during their marriage ceremony, she wore a black long and sleeveless top with a high collar and matching long gloves. She wore a wide black and grey skirt with a grey sash around her waist. Beneath her marriage ceremonial attire were short puffy pants with black lace socks and sandals. She also wore a black turban with a black and light yellow veil over yellow crescent moon earrings. When she and Naruto got married, Hinata wore a traditional white wedding kimono, her long hair had been done up, and she had been wearing lipstick.

After becoming a mother, her casual attire changes to a maroon jacket with a dark purple shirt and a cream skirt. She also wears a pair of lavender slippers. Years later, on Naruto's Hokage inauguration day, Hinata had cut her hair and bangs to shoulder-length for it to grow long again some time, and tied it in a ponytail on several occasions. She also dons an outfit that consists of a long-sleeved, collared white shirt, lavender dress, and blue pants. By the time of Boruto's graduation exams, she had cut her hair short once more. She also wears a light purple short-sleeved jacket with a white shirt underneath, light brown shorts and a pair of purple open-toed boots.

Abilities

Jūho Sōshiken

Hinata using one of her clan's advanced secret techniques.

Although initially deemed a failure by her father, Hinata resolved to become stronger, bravely fighting her stronger cousin Neji in the Chūnin Exams despite losing. With further training, she had greatly developed her skills as a late bloomer, ultimately changing her father's opinion about her and becoming a chūnin by Part II.[14] During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Hinata proved strong enough to protect Neji as much as he protected her.[25] Naruto has also praised Hinata's strength at times, proven when she fought Pain while he was subdued,[26] and when she helped destroy Toneri's Tenseigan after receiving Hamura Ōtsutsuki's chakra two years later.[7] As an adult, she survived a battle with the extremely powerful Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki.[23]

Byakugan

File:Hinata's using Byakugan.png

Hinata with her Byakugan activated.

As a Hyūga, Hinata possesses the Byakugan, a dōjutsu which grants her a near 360° field of x-ray vision (with the exception of a small blind spot) and the ability to see the chakra pathway system. She can focus her Byakugan's sight to drastically increase its range in one direction to at least 20 kilometres.[7] Hinata's Byakugan can also see through genjutsu,[27] and help Ino time and pinpoint her Mind Body Switch Technique.[28] In the anime, she can magnify her vision to zoom in on small insects while also in infrared,[29] and even accurately aim chakra needles at fast and small targets.[30] In Part II of the anime, Hinata's mastery of her Byakugan could adjust to light to accurately see Guren's real chakra network and not the reflections created by the latter's crystal labyrinth.[31]

Taijutsu

File:Ep46hinata.png

Hinata's Gentle Fist stance.

Using the Byakugan, Hinata utilises the Hyūga's signature Gentle Fist taijutsu style to surgically inject chakra into an opponent's tenketsu, causing severe internal trauma with minimal contact. Before becoming a genin, Hinata's skills impressed other clan members except her father, who considered her weak in part due to her reluctance to hurt her sister Hanabi in their duel.[10][11] In the anime, however, she later underwent the Senbon Sparring ritual, where one must spar nearly one thousand times in succession.[32] By Part II, her taijutsu improved immensely, being one of the few individuals to hit the Deva Path,[18] and even using the Gentle Fist to relocate Naruto's dislocated shoulder.[33] As an adult, Hinata had mastered the Gentle Fist fighting style.[34]

Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm

Hinata's Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm technique.

By Part II, Hinata uses more of her clan's secret techniques such as the Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm to attack targets from a distance, deflect incoming attacks,[35] or together with another user for greater power.[36] She later used the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms to defeat a Ten-Tails mini-clone during the Fourth Shinobi World War;[37] before this, she learned a halved version of it in the anime.[31] Hinata can also use the Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists to drain an opponent's chakra network. Two years later, she created a stronger variant infused with Hamura's chakra, being able to destroy the Tenseigan when combined with Naruto's Rasengan.[7]

Protecting Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms

Hinata's Protecting Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms.

The anime depicts Hinata's usage of the Protecting Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, which uses her natural flexibility and coordination to attack and defend at the same time.[38] Her Genjutsu World counterpart can use the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven in the anime.[39]

Chakra Prowess and Control

Team three sealing

Hinata aiding in using the Four-Corner Sealing Barrier.

After the Chūnin Exams, Hinata trained in further developing her great chakra control. In the anime, she was shown forming an orb of water around herself, as well as chakra needles. Her excellent chakra control is best seen with the Protecting Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, emitting streams of chakra from her palms to create extremely sharp blades to attack and defend. By Part II of the anime, Hinata's control has advanced enough to match a medical-nin, easily managing to perform and sustain the Four-Corner Sealing Barrier better than Ino, a medical-nin herself.

Twin Lions Crumbling Attack

Hinata using Hamura's chakra.

As a member of the Hyūga's main family, Hinata inherited powerful chakra directly from Hamura Ōtsutsuki. The strength and purity of this chakra was what drew Toneri to her. When she met Hamura on the moon, he transferred his own chakra and will to her, giving her the power to destroy the Tenseigan (albeit with Naruto's aid), as well as changing her chakra colour from blue to purple. In addition, Hinata's reserves grew considerably and she learned to transfer her chakra to others, instantly recharging a drained Naruto with no signs of exhaustion.[7]

Ninjutsu

Medical Ninjutsu

Hinata has some medical knowledge, being able to make a special ointment to assist in healing wounds. She is also capable of using her Byakugan and Gentle Fist for medical purposes, as seen when she relocated Naruto's shoulder in the Fourth Shinobi World War. In the anime, Hinata is shown able to use medical ninjutsu, witnessed from her use of the Mystical Palm Technique to heal the injured citizens of the Hachō Village.[40]

Nature Transformation

Hinata is skilled enough to learn two nature transformations, Fire and Lightning Release, by the time of the Fourth Shinobi World War.[41]

Other Skills

Like her team-mates, Hinata is a skilled tracker. She regularly uses this skill alongside her Byakugan to expand her study of the area. She is also fairly intelligent, as she was able to answer most of the questions on the written portion of the Chūnin Exams without being shown cheating. In adulthood, she was able to fool Toneri long enough to not only track down her missing sister, but find the Tenseigan itself so she could later destroy it alongside Naruto.[7] In the anime, Hinata was noted by Naruto to be excellent at cooking.[42] She also is very skilled in knitting. In the anime, the Genjutsu World version of Hinata can use the Shadow Clone Technique.[43]

Part I

Prologue — Land of Waves

Team 8

The official group photo of Team 8.

In the anime, Hinata was first seen along with the graduating class, including Naruto. She silently hoped that she would be on the same team with Naruto, though it was to not to be the case, much to her disappointment. She was grouped into Team 8 along with Kiba Inuzuka, Akamaru, and Shino Aburame.

Chūnin Exams

Naruto and hinata at first exam

Hinata allows Naruto to copy her test.

When the Chūnin Exams began, Hinata entered with her team-mates in an attempt to change herself. During the first test, she was seated next to Naruto, and when Naruto was struggling to complete the written exam, she offered to let him cheat off her test. However, after seeing the penalty for cheating on a student just behind them, he refused so she wouldn't get in trouble, and because he was too proud to cheat. His inspiring speech at the end of the first test gave her the confidence to not give up, so the proctor, Ibiki Morino, passed everyone in the group who didn't refuse to take the tenth question.

Team 8 hides from gaara

Team 8 hides from Gaara.

In the second part of the exam, during the Forest of Death, she used her Byakugan to locate enemies. After coming up with a strategy and a shinobi team came their way, her team quickly managed to retrieve their scroll, becoming one of the first genin teams to do so in that exam. When Kiba and Akamaru smelled a second target, they witnessed the Three Sand Siblings' confrontation with a team of Ame genin. After Gaara killed the Amegakure genin, they hid behind a bush, hoping not to be caught and killed.

Gentle fist

Hinata vs. Neji.

In the preliminaries, Hinata had to face her much stronger cousin, Neji, in combat. She almost broke down and gave up after Neji berated her on being a failure that could never change. This angered Naruto, and he encouraged Hinata, giving her the strength to fight her cousin. Despite being outmatched and having her chakra cut off, she continued to fight. Neji was surprised when she refused to give up, even becoming enraged when she accused him of being the weak one who fights what he is. He charged at her, but the jōnin in attendance restrained him before he could kill her. When Hinata was taken away to the emergency room, Naruto dipped his fingers in her blood and vowed to defeat Neji in her place. Later, despite her loss, when confronted by her family at the foolishness of choosing to fight Neji, Hinata strongly voiced her conviction in what she did, not ashamed and determined to better herself.[44]

File:Hinata encourages naruto.png

A month later, Naruto, concerned that he would be unable to defeat Neji despite his vow, ran into Hinata at the training grounds. When he revealed his growing doubts about the match and his own abilities to Hinata, she reassured him that he never gave up because he always had the strength to overcome his own failures, which was something she admired, and that she had become more confident after he cheered for her. This brought Naruto out of his depression and gave him the drive to go face Neji. She later watched his match, but due to the injuries she received from Neji not being fully healed, Hinata passed out and did not see the outcome of the match. Kiba got her medical attention from Kabuto Yakushi, who was disguised as an Anbu. She was healed, but remained unconscious for the rest of the Konoha Crush.

Hinata was seen at the Third Hokage's funeral, mourning his death.

Bikōchū Search Mission

Bikochumo Beetle

Team 8 and Naruto searching for the bikōchū.

In the anime, Team 8 and Naruto are sent to capture a bikōchū beetle that could track Sasuke Uchiha's scent — a mission that Hinata had insisted on. During the mission she develops her Protecting Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, and managed to save Naruto and the rest of Team 8 by using it against hostile bug-users. During the first episode of this arc, Naruto came across the silhouette of a naked Hinata training in a waterfall at night. Oblivious to who she was (and apparently her state of undress), he tried to approach and speak to her, only to slip on a rock and splash into the river. Startled, Hinata ran before Naruto could recognise her. The next day, he told Kiba about how he saw a "beautiful girl" at the waterfall, much to Hinata's intense embarrassment.

Academy Student Lead Mission

In the anime, the Academy students were divided into teams of three and were assigned to a genin who would lead them on a mission against the other teams. Hinata was assigned to lead a team of three academy students; Nobori, Daichi and Matsuri. Her time with them was not covered much except that she was good at setting up camp and was doing better than Naruto.

Gosunkugi Capture Mission

File:Hinata's homemade onigiri.png

Hinata's Naruto-shaped rice ball.

In the anime, Hinata accompanied Naruto and Kiba to catch a thief. During their travel, she gave Naruto a rice ball that was made to resemble him. However, because someone else caught Gosunkugi (albeit with their help accidentally), the mission was considered a failure.

Buried Gold Excavation Mission

In the anime, as a result of these previous failed missions, Hinata, Naruto, and Kiba were threatened with being returned to the Academy if they did not succeed in finding hidden treasure. The group initially had difficulty working together due to friction between Naruto and Kiba. When they were captured by a group of ninja that could perfectly transform into copies of others, it was up to Hinata to save them and scare them away. She was unable to pursue them because of a leg injury, so Naruto and Kiba did so for her. Hinata later returned, and mistakenly attacked Naruto after he absent-mindedly put down the chest, which had distinguished him from the impostor.

Peddlers Escort Mission

During this anime arc, Hinata managed to defeat a powerful ninja, Jiga, although she nearly sacrificed her life in doing so.

Lady Daimyō Search Mission

In the anime, she helped her team-mates navigate the halls of a strange castle, which was actually a summoned chameleon in disguise, to save a daimyō's wife.

Sunagakure Support Mission

File:Hinata watches naruto leave.png

In the anime, Hinata continued to develop a much better relationship with her father, who encouraged her to do her best after her near-success in the bikōchū mission. Neji also got along well with her, sparring with her and caring about her well-being. When Naruto left to train with Jiraiya at the end of the series, she watched him leave, but was unable to bring herself to say goodbye to him. As he left, she vowed to become stronger, and to work as hard as he did.

Interlude

In Naruto's Footsteps: The Friends' Paths

Team Kurenai Chūnin Exams

Team Kurenai competing in the Chūnin Exams.

Two years after Naruto left the village to train with Jiraiya, Konoha decided to host an early Chūnin Exam alongside Sunagakure. Once entering the exams, Hinata and her team-mates were randomly split into different rooms to take the written test. Shikamaru, as proctor, explained that everyone only needs to answer one question on the test each with different worth, but their team's combined score must equal exactly 100 points to pass. Neji soon figured out a way to solve the problem.[45] By sending a specific amount of vibrations through the walls, their team members could catch on and know which question to answer. After time was up, Shikamaru revealed a bonus question that must be answered unanimously. They were asked what member of their respective team would be chosen to be a decoy and the one picked would be disqualified. Hinata, along with her team, didn't answer as they valued their friendship too much. Eventually, her team passed the first round. However, because there were too many participants left, a preliminary round was added where everyone must race to Sunagakure and only the first 30 teams to arrive would qualify for the second exam.[46]

File:Protective Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms.png

Hinata faces off against Kazami.

After the race, Hinata's team was among the first 30 teams to make it. The following day, the second exam began. Each teams was each given either a Heaven or Earth scroll and were required to obtain the missing scroll. They were then required to bring the set to the main building in the centre of Demon Desert within three days.[47] Ultimately, a Kusa-nin team came after them. Hinata faced off with Kazami, using her Gentle Fist techniques to repel his wind attacks. Nonetheless, the enemies got Team Kurenai's Earth scroll and retreated. While escaping Hinata's sight and blocking Kiba's smell respectively, Shino set one of his female insects on the enemy to track. However, while pursuing the enemy, Hinata and her team-mates fell into a quicksand pit. Akamaru was able to use his Dynamic Marking to solidify the sand enough for the team to escape.[48]

As Kiba and Akamaru continued following the scent, they soon found it multiplied and scattered throughout the area. When Shino's bugs failed to find the enemies as well and suggested going after other enemy scrolls, Kiba, realising that Burami's scent was on his clothes from their earlier scuffle, used it to find the real enemy. While back on the trail again, the enemies ambushed Team Kurenai. While initially overwhelmed, the team swapped out of the predicament with Shino's insect clones, allowing them to regroup. Seeing through the enemies' tactics, Team Kurenai quickly pressured the Kusa-nin before Kiba finished them off with his Three-Headed Wolf technique, earning Team Kurenai both the Heaven and Earth scrolls.[49] Later, Team Kurenai was caught in a massive sandstorm.[50] Ultimately, the team was rescued by the Suna-nin proctors and brought to a building to wait out the storm before resuming the exams.[51]

Tsunade Promoting Genin

After the storm passed and the second exam was concluded, it was learned that the Chūnin Exams were ended early due to controversy happening in the second exam. Instead, it was decided by Gaara that a report on each participant would be sent to their respective village leader for them to decide if they would be promoted. Upon returning to the village, Hinata's team was all promoted to chūnin status.[52]

Part II

Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission

File:Hinata and naruto meet again.png

Hinata's reaction to Naruto's return to the village.

In Part II, she had attained the rank of chūnin, and was still part of Team 8, renamed Team Kurenai. When Naruto greeted her, she passed out, overcome by the prospect of meeting him for the first time in two and a half years.

In the anime, just when she regained her consciousness, Naruto came to her and asked, very vaguely, to come with him on his mission, telling her "don't say a word and come with me". Hinata misinterpreted the words and promptly passed out again. After this, Hinata asked Kiba if she seemed more grown-up, in the hopes of impressing Naruto. Kiba jokingly teased her, by saying she was still as silly as ever, and then told her that Naruto was behind her, surprising and upsetting her when she discovered it was a lie.

Akatsuki Suppression Mission

In the anime, she can be seen at Asuma's funeral. Later, she is seen by a river with her team-mates, overjoyed to hear that Naruto is working so hard to hone his new technique. She is then reprimanded by Kiba, who teases her about why she's blushing, causing her to back away with embarrassment.

Three-Tails' Appearance

Main article: Three-Tails' Appearance In the anime, Hinata and her team-mates were specifically picked by Kakashi for their skills in tracking to find Orochimaru's hideout. They found a booby-trapped hideout, but they made it out. While knowing this hideout might have only been a diversion they continued to look. They ran into some of Guren's men and battled Nurari in Kiba's place, using the Byakugan to navigate through the smoke that interfered with Kiba's sense of smell.

Hinatavsguren

Hinata prepares her attack on Guren.

They were trapped in Guren's crystal labyrinth and despite having difficulty focusing with her Byakugan because of the reflective images Guren's technique created, she was able to find Guren. Hinata then fought and defeated Guren, though it turned out to be only a clone, and the real Guren trapped her in crystal. Hinata was later freed by her team-mates, and she informed them of how she avoided being completely crystallised by Guren's technique by surrounding herself in chakra.

Later, she was put on Team Three with Shizune as the leader and Sakura and Ino as assistants to seal the Three-Tails. Though she showed relative ease using the Four-Corner Sealing Barrier, they failed to seal it twice, and thus they all returned to Konoha, leaving the Anbu to handle the Three-Tails.

Itachi Pursuit Mission

Eight Man Squad

Team 7 and 8 set out to pursue Itachi.

Team 8 was recruited to help Team 7 find Itachi Uchiha. They split up to try and find his trail, and Hinata was added to Naruto's group. They were soon confronted by Kabuto Yakushi and Hinata used her Byakugan to see that one-third of Kabuto had been taken over by Orochimaru's remains.

Fated Battle Between Brothers

Later, when the Eight Man Squad regrouped, they came across Tobi, who appeared to be block their path to Sasuke. During the battle that followed, Hinata took the role of stationary scout, using her Byakugan to follow Tobi's chakra signal. When Tobi left after receiving word that Sasuke had killed Itachi, Kakashi instructed Hinata to locate the site of their battle. They tried to reach it before Tobi, but were too late and were forced to return home.

Six-Tails Unleashed

Main article: Six-Tails Unleashed In the anime, after the mission to locate Itachi failed, she and the rest of the Eight Man Squad were intercepted by Katsuyu, informing Team Yamato of a new mission. The two groups departed with Hinata, her team-mates, and Kakashi returning to Konoha.

Pain's Assault

During the beginning of the assault of the village, Hinata was with her team-mates, watching the disaster. They later separated with Shino and Kiba going to find their parents.

Hinata intervenes to protect Naruto.

After Pain destroyed the village, Hinata emerged from the rubble without any major injuries along with her bodyguard, Kō Hyūga. As Kō was not so fortunate, Hinata tried to find him medical attention, but he refused as his only concern was her safety. Once realising that Naruto was fighting Pain all by himself, she attempted to run to his side, but was stopped by Kō, who warned her she'd only be a burden. Just as she seemingly accepted Kō's words, Naruto was pinned down by Pain. She decided to intervene, despite knowing she did not have the ability to defeat him. When Naruto asked why she would throw away her life, she responded that it was because she loved him, which greatly shocked Naruto.

Hinata manages to land a blow on Pain.

In the anime, she was able to remove a few of the Chakra Disruption Blades that were on Naruto and even land a blow against the Deva Path. While he did eventually subdue her with Shinra Tensei, he was puzzled why she was willing to fight despite being weakened by his blow. Hinata, crawling near Naruto and still attempting to remove the chakra blade from him, replied by echoing Naruto's words: it is her nindō. With that response, the Deva Path stabbed her with one of his chakra blades. Enraged, Naruto slipped into his six-tailed form, while a barely conscious Hinata looked on.

As the battle between Naruto and Pain continued, Team Guy arrived at Hinata's side, and rushed her away from the battlefield and to Sakura's side. When her wounds were healed, Hinata expressed relief over news that Naruto had defeated Pain. When Naruto came back to the village, she shed tears of joy that he was all right, and was later seen smiling as the villagers celebrated Naruto's victory.

Five Kage Summit

Konoha 11 Decision

Most of the Konoha 11 meet to discuss Sasuke.

Hinata and the rest of the Konoha 11, minus Team Kakashi, decided that, in light of Sasuke's criminal actions, they should personally eliminate him before he can involve Konoha in a war. After Naruto was informed of their intentions and met with Sasuke, he told them to leave Sasuke to him. As several of the members voiced their discontentment with this as they feared that Sasuke's actions would incite a war, Hinata watched as Naruto once again firmly stated that he would handle Sasuke and also tell them everything when the time was right.

In the anime, Hinata had a conversation with Shikamaru about Naruto when he was in his six-tailed form. She stated that Naruto transformed in order to protect her, but was concerned about his display of intense rage and loss of control.[53]

Power

Main article: Power (Arc) In the anime, she was one of the Konoha-nin who arrived as backup and took care of a unconscious Naruto. Fourth Shinobi World War: Confrontation

File:Second division.png

Hinata assigned to the Second Division.

Hinata was later assigned to the Second Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces alongside Neji, Kurotsuchi and Karui. She commented that she was a little nervous, while Karui told her that war was nothing to worry about. However, she instantly noted that many ninja didn't trust each other due to years of being each other's enemies which worried her.

Hinata and Neji

Hinata and Neji protecting each other during the war.

Hinata's division was deployed to an area where the White Zetsu Army was discovered travelling underground. When Kurotsuchi and Kitsuchi used their technique to unearth the army of White Zetsu clones, she and Neji attacked them simultaneously with the Eight Trigrams Vacuum Wall Palm. Later during the battle, Hinata saved Neji from an attack by a White Zetsu clone.

At the end of the first day of battle, after Neji collapsed from fatigue, Hinata took his place alongside Shino. When Shino told her not to overexert herself as he already had his kikaichū scattered around to help detect the enemy, Hinata thanked him and thinking about Naruto, she resolutely told him that failure was not an option as this was a war to protect Naruto.

In the anime, she, Shino and Kiba were sent to investigate a suspected breach of the Allied Shinobi Forces perimeter and encountered a cave filled with enemy White Zetsu Army forces. Engaging the forces, Hinata sent out a messenger owl to the Sealing Team and she alongside, Shino, Kiba, and Akamaru, held off the opposition until the team could arrive and seal the cave. When the two members of the sealing team arrived, they immediately began the process to seal the cave, however, as Team 8 attempted to escape, the White Zetsu clones followed, forcing Kiba to attack them. In the process, a lamp was overturned and it lit a trail of oil leading to several crates of explosive tags. With Akamaru unable to douse the flames, the crates exploded, knocking out Hinata. Subsequently, a surviving White Zetsu clone absorbed her to pose as Hinata. After Shino and Kiba snuffed the imposter out, her team-mates found her. Discussing what had transpired, the team's drive to destroy the enemy was renewed after they realised that the enemy had been using Yamato to gain personal intel on them, with Hinata shocked that their foes knew of her feelings for Naruto.[54]

The next morning, Hinata's division resumed battling the White Zetsu clones. She aided Neji in saving allies from the reincarnated Kidōmaru's Spider Sticky Gold projectiles and cutting them free from the spider webs that bound them. While Hinata was horrified at the Oto-nin's senseless fighting, striking down both enemies and allies with no regard, Neji decided to face Kidōmaru personally. Later, Hinata found Neji unconscious with Kiba and Akamaru. Shino told her not touch Neji, since they still didn't know for sure if it wasn't another White Zetsu clone. Checking her team-mates' condition with her Byakugan, she was shocked to find that their chakra flow had been completely stopped. Inoichi, contacting telepathically, deduced that the technique removed the victim's soul and transported it to another location. From this, he explained that this technique could be dispelled like genjutsu, by pouring chakra into the actual technique. However, it had a seal that prevented Inoichi, even equipped with special enhancement tools, from being able to detect or communicate with them. Eventually, Naruto found the seal and broke it, allowing Inoichi to telepathically dispel the technique. Upon Neji's awakening, a tearful Hinata hugged Neji in joy.[55]

File:Naruto saving Hinata.png

While fighting, she was simultaneously attacked by three White Zetsu clones transformed into Kumo-nin, but they were intercepted and defeated by one of Naruto's shadow clones. After Kiba, Akamaru, Shino and Neji arrived at the scene, Neji demanded that Naruto prove who he is, but Hinata told them that if they looked into his eyes, they would know that he was in fact Naruto. Lamenting the fact that she wanted to protect Naruto, he ended up saving her instead. However, Naruto saw her sorrow and reassured her that she was very strong, recounting her coming to his aid during Pain's assault on Konoha, to which she silently thanked him for. The team then mobilised to finish off the rest of the enemies. After being informed by Inoichi from headquarters that Naruto and Killer B were fighting the "masked Madara", Hinata and the rest of the Konoha 11 rushed to his aid. As she ran alongside Neji, she thought of Naruto and asked him to wait for her, and that instead of running after him, she'd be walking with him, hand-in-hand, once the war had ended.

Fourth Shinobi World War: Climax

Hyuga shield

The Hyūga declare that they will protect Naruto.

Finally arriving at the battlefield, Hinata guided Ino as she took control of Obito Uchiha, and sent the would-be fatal attack off-course. Hinata then immediately asked Naruto whether or not he was okay, and later stood with the rest of the Allied Shinobi Forces as they faced their opposition. Joining her father and cousin on the front-lines, Hinata declared that they would protect Naruto no matter what, as he was the key to the final strategy Shikaku imparted to them to stop the Ten-Tails. As the Ten-Tails shot several projectiles towards them, the Hyūga were able to deflect them, but when their opponents decided to use a pinpoint attack on the Naruto, Hinata realised that she would not be able to deflect it in time and decided to act as a human shield, however, she found herself protected by Neji as he intercepted the fatal attack. Hinata was devastated, openly crying as her cousin imparted his final words to her and Naruto before passing away.

File:Hinata repels the Ten-Tails.png

After Obito attempted to shatter Naruto's belief in himself, Hinata reaffirmed Naruto's ninja way by telling him that if his life was connected with everyone who shared his beliefs, and have sacrificed themselves for him like Neji had, and that to stop believing in himself would make their sacrifices in vain. With her words reaching him, Naruto took Hinata's hand and he admiringly thanked her for staying by his side. As he manifested his Kurama Mode shroud, Naruto transferred some of Kurama's chakra to Hinata. Amazed by the chakra that surrounded her, and even further by the fact that Naruto was actually handling such chakra, Hinata later used the Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm to deflect one of the beast's tails which was headed towards her.

Charging with the alliance towards their enemy, Hinata used her Gentle Fist to fix Naruto's dislocated shoulder joint so that he could throw his Rasenshuriken. When the protective shroud given to her and the other shinobi disappeared after protecting them from several attacks including the Tenpenchii, Hinata led the other shinobi to form a defensive line in front of Naruto while Sakura healed him. She later watched on as the Ten-Tails prepared to attack the division with another Tailed Beast Ball before being saved by the arrival of the reincarnated Fourth Hokage.

Hinata fights a Ten-Tails' replica

Following Kiba's proclamation that they were joining the fight after witnessing Team 7's actions, Hinata attacked a mini-clone of the Ten-Tails with Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. For a moment however, she stumbled after executing only thirty-two strikes, leading her to think that she was at her limit and would not be able to complete the sixty-four strikes. She then recalled Naruto's determination, and Neji's instructions, and found the determination to finish the sixty-four strikes, therefore completing the technique. Afterwards, Hinata prepared her Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists to attack them with and declared her intent and determination to make it through the battle and to forever be by Naruto's side when it ends. She later watched on as the main body of the beast was attacked by Naruto and Sasuke, and silently spurred them on. She later watched with her Byakugan as the battle against Obito waged on, and reported to Sakura and those around her, the progress of the battle.

Birth of the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki

With the situation looking grim as the Alliance was trapped in a barrier with a Tailed Beast Ball-firing tree, Hinata and the other shinobi soon found themselves shrouded in the previous Version 1 mantles again. He and the others subsequently found themselves on the outside of the barrier, escaping the near-fatal attack thanks to Naruto and Minato's action. She then tried to explain what had happened when an irate Kiba cursed that Naruto could achieve such a feat.

Konoha 11 attacking Obito

Hinata and her comrades using Naruto's Rasengan to attack Obito.

As Obito unleashed the tree form of the Ten-Tails, its branches begin decimating the battlefield and absorbing the chakra of countless ninja, killing them. Hashirama Senju had Ino Yamanaka link-up telepathically to try and rally everyone. While Hashirama's words failed to inspire anyone, Naruto's senjutsu-enhanced Tailed Beast Mode combined with Ino's telepathy caused his emotions and personal memories to be transferred to everyone. Hinata sympathised with Naruto over the loss of Neji and later watched on in worry as Naruto joined Sasuke on the battlefield. She later looked on as Shikamaru was resuscitated as a result of the combined efforts of Sakura, Naruto and Tsunade. She noted that she wanted to continue to walk beside Naruto so she would continue to give it her all. She later mobilised alongside her comrades and was shocked when Naruto's Tailed Beast Mode mantle surrounded them when they enter Kurama's tails. Using this form and the Rasengan Naruto created, they were able to break through Obito's defences and create an opening for Naruto and Sasuke to attack them. Afterwards, she and her comrades assisted Naruto with extracting the tailed beasts' chakra from within Obito in order to stop the tree from blooming.

Though Obito was defeated, Hinata and the rest of the Alliance were assaulted by Tobi. As the Alliance struggled against the new threat, Kiba and Ino sensed Naruto's presence on their battlefield. Activating her Byakugan, only to discover to her horror that Naruto was in critical condition with his heartbeat slowly becoming weaker. Rushing to his aid, an exhausted Hinata tripped and fell, all the while worried about Naruto's condition, silently pleading to Neji to protect him.

Hinata falls victim to the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Later, when Madara Uchiha finally succeeded with the activation of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, much like the rest of the world, she too fell under the genjutsu's power. As she was being wrapped up by the Ten-Tails' roots, the still-conscious Hinata mentally called out for Naruto. Inside the genjutsu, Hinata dreamt of being a couple with Naruto, while Hanabi and Neji watched from afar.

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki Strikes

After Naruto was able to defeat and reform Sasuke, Hinata and everyone else were released from the Infinite Tsukuyomi. She later attended Neji's funeral alongside Naruto and the rest of the Konoha shinobi.

Hinata's knitting

Hinata fixing Naruto's old scarf.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Hinata had fixed Naruto's old red scarf and planned to give it to him at the Rinne Festival to once again confess her feelings for him, but encountered problems such as her own shyness and the new competition with the many young women for Naruto's affections due to his new-found popularity. However, she was encouraged by Sakura to give it to him. When Hinata finally made an attempt to give it to him outside of his apartment building, she saw Naruto wearing a new scarf around his neck, which made her sadly back down as she thought it was given by another girl. Later, while Hinata was crying, she was confronted by Toneri, who claimed that he came for her. Confused upon hearing that he came for her, Hinata was rendered unconscious by Toneri after the puppet shinobi restrained her. However, Naruto saved her from her kidnapper, only the red scarf she made was torn. After Naruto saved Hinata, Toneri appeared before the two and stated the end of the world is coming. Before he disappeared, he told Hinata that he'll be waiting for her answer. After Toneri disappeared, Hinata and Naruto witnessed a meteor crash outside the village. When Hanabi was captured by Toneri, Naruto, Hinata, Sakura, Sai, and Shikamaru were then dispatched to rescue Hanabi. As they began their search with Sai's courtesy, Hinata and Naruto found Hanabi's kunai and later regrouped with the others. They eventually found a cave with a secret path towards Toneri's location, however Hinata was unable to use her Byakugan due to the lake distorting her vision.

After the team entered into the lake, they fell into the Gatekeeper's genjutsu, which caused them all to drift into a sleep and dream about their own memories. However, inside the trap, Hinata's scarf accidently got out of her bag and began to wrap around Naruto, allowing her memories to flow into his and saw first-hand how much she loved him since childhood. Sakura was able to see through the genjutsu and dispel it.

Hinata guards against Toneri

Hinata confronts "Toneri".

While Shikamaru, Sai, Sakura, and Naruto went ahead after they found another lake, Hinata was about to follow them until Toneri arrived and proposed marriage to her. She refused, only wanting her sister back. She became horrified to find out that Toneri took Hanabi's eyes out and implanted them into his own to awaken the Tenseigan. He then proceeded to show her the history of the Ōtsutsuki clan and Hamura's will towards mankind should they use chakra as a weapon rather than peace as his brother Hagoromo wanted. When Naruto intervened, Toneri, revealing to be only a puppet substitute, stated he would wait for her answer.

Hinata meets the patriarch

Hinata meeting the Ōtsutsuki clan's patriarch.

They arrived at an abandoned village and Hinata investigated it with Naruto where the two spend some quality time together. During this, Hinata is unaware of Naruto's growing feelings for, just as he was oblivious to her's. They later found a monument with a patriarch‎ of the Ōtsutsuki clan, showing her the true history of their clan, that Toneri was misinterpreting their will, and only she could stop him due to her being a direct descendant of Hamura. She then met an elderly Hamura himself, who pleaded with her to not let the world his brother made be destroyed. When Naruto and the others asked what she saw, she denied it being important.

Naruto confesses to Hinata

Hinata is left speechless as Naruto confesses to her.

Later, while fixing the scarf, Naruto approached her and confessed his love for her, leaving her speechless. However, Toneri interrupted and wanted to hear Hinata's answer, to which she pretended to accept his marriage proposal so she could save Hanabi and stop his plan. Although it seemed that she coldly turned on Naruto, she was shown to be deeply hurt by her choice before losing consciousness. After waking up in Toneri's castle, Hinata found a comatose Hanabi and silently vowed to save her and destroy the energy vessel for the Tenseigan. While Toneri took Hinata to Hamura's shrine, she managed to discover the vessel's location, but when she used the time to destroy it, she got caught by Toneri, who angrily revealed his suspicions about her intentions and only loving Naruto. After Toneri callously destroyed her replacement scarf that was meant for Naruto, he forced a green orb into her, brainwashing her to become his bride. After Toneri sealed Hinata's spirit inside of a painting, she shed a tear while thinking about her regret over what she did to Naruto.

Later, with the wedding almost finished, Toneri was about to kiss Hinata, but Naruto arrived just in time to disrupt the ceremony, angering Toneri. To humiliate Naruto, Toneri forced the brainwashed Hinata to attack him, and after he managed to free her from Toneri's control, Hinata apologised to Naruto for breaking his heart, to which he reassured her that he already forgave her. As Naruto and Hinata regrouped with the rest of the team (including Hanabi) after the two destroyed the Tenseigan vessel, Naruto then happily took a small remnant of Hinata's scarf, saying that even in its ruined state, he would cherish it, which left her on the brink of tears of joy by his kind gesture. However, Toneri returned and imprisoned Hinata, forcing her to watch as he tried to kill Naruto. Though, Naruto was able to defeat him, freeing her as a result. Hinata then took Hanabi's eyes back, and protected Naruto from Toneri's chakra drain by sharing Hamura's chakra with him. Later, after Toneri was saved by Naruto, she showed him where she met Hamura's soul. Toneri learned how foolish he was and apologised for his actions, choosing live the rest of his life alone on the moon to atone his sins.

Naruto and Hinata kiss

Naruto and Hinata share their first kiss together.

With the crisis averted, Hinata asked Naruto about his scarf he was wearing earlier, to which he revealed it was knitted by his late mother for him before he was born, which was why he was so protective of it, leaving Hinata relieved and embarrassed by her actions. Naruto proceeded to reiterate his love for Hinata and stated that he wanted to be with her forever, much to her happiness. The two then shared a kiss while floating in the sky.

Soon afterwards, Hinata and Naruto started dating. On one such occasion, he took her out to lunch at a restaurant, but got very worried that he didn't have enough money after seeing the prices. Seeing Naruto so nervous, Hinata picked up on this with her Byakugan. Deciding to spare his feelings by hiding her knowledge of his money shortage, she suggested that they should go for a simple meal at Ichiraku.[56]

Epilogue

Eventually, Hinata and Naruto had two children, a son named Boruto and a daughter named Himawari. One winter morning, Hinata was knitting a scarf while her children rushed to greet their father who was training outside, excitedly asking him to play with them. Hinata gently scolded them for being outside in the snow barefoot, but soon joined in their fun after her husband and children started a snowball fight.[7]

Years later, Naruto finally realised his dream of becoming Hokage, being chosen as the Seventh. On the day of Naruto's inauguration, after sending her children to wake their father, Hinata went to collect Naruto's official Hokage cloak and told Naruto that she would meet them at the venue. When she arrived after picking up the cloak, Hinata was told by Kakashi that her husband and children still hadn't arrived even though it was getting late, so she rushed back home to go and get them. Upon returning home, she found to her shock that Naruto was knocked out, wondering who targeted his tenketsu and surmised that her husband would be out for a day, meaning he would miss his inauguration.[57]

On the day of the Kage Summit, Hinata accompanied her daughter in visiting Neji's grave. When Himawari asked her mother if Neji would be happy with sunflowers she brought for him, Hinata assured her daughter that he would, because they were the same as her name. Himawari then cheerfully said that she wanted to visit the memorial site again with her brother.[58]

The clone ended up dropping the birthday cake and Boruto was angry at Naruto for missing his daughter's birthday party, and lashed out about this to his mother. Although she missed Naruto and wanted him home more often, she didn't condone Boruto's behavior and tried to calm him down with little success. She met with Sasuke at her front door as he asked if Naruto was home and she told him he was still at his office.

However, she became concerned when Boruto seemed to be acting strangely and went to straight to his room after telling them not to disturb him. Later on, she attended the third round of the Chūnin Exams with Himawari to watch Boruto face Shikadai Nara and was proud when it appeared he won. Seeing Naruto's uneasy look toward Boruto, she approached her husband to be surprised when he asked her to use her Byakugan on Boruto. Hinata realised that Boruto had cheated with a particular ninja tool in his right arm throughout the fight and expressed disappointment as Naruto rebuked him. She fled the arena with her daughter as Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki attacked, but Hinata witnessed Naruto sacrifice himself to protect Boruto, Sasuke, and Sarada Uchiha from Momoshiki's technique. She tried to save him to no avail and was left injured, and Sakura healed her. When Boruto decided to join Sasuke and the other Kage to rescue Naruto, Hinata initially refused to allow her son to go somewhere so dangerous; however, when she saw Boruto wearing Naruto's old jacket, she was reminded of Naruto when he was young and decided to believe in him.

With the rescue a success, Hinata had breakfast with her family. When she tried to mend Boruto's torn jacket, she was told not to do so by her son as he thought that it looked 'cooler' that way, pleasantly surprising her. She wished both her son and her husband to have a good day alongside Himawari as they left for their respective work.

Naruto Shippūden the Movie: Bonds

After the attack on Konoha by the Land of the Sky, Naruto was assigned to escort a young girl, Amaru, (whom he had mistaken for a boy) and her sensei, Shinnō, back to their village, with Sakura and Hinata completing the three-man team. Upon arriving, they discovered it to have been attacked as well. A distraught Amaru recklessly ran into the village, accidentally setting off a trap hidden by the enemy. In the aftermath of the trap, Shinnō was tragically wounded in his successful attempt to save Amaru, and after a few weakened words, it was made apparent through Hinata's Byakugan that he was dying, and eventually appeared to succumb to his wounds.

Shortly afterwards, the three split up to investigate the area. Hinata was kidnapped and was held prisoner, along with the rest of Amaru's villagers. Thanks to the aid of Amaru, they were able to escape the prison, and eventually the flying island itself, riding aboard a flying boat of sorts down to the ground below. Hinata then became happy as Amaru saved Naruto from falling to his death.

Naruto Shippūden the Movie: The Will of Fire

Hinata was first seen when they celebrated for Naruto and Sai's recovery and ate barbecue, where she explained that she was told by Naruto to invite everyone.

Later, Hinata was sent with the rest of Konoha 11 to retrieve back Naruto and Sakura. Hinata's team caught up with Naruto and Sakura, with the rest of Konoha 11. Hinata and the others were caught by one of Hiruko's henchmen Ichi, and was freed by Tenten. Team Guy was left behind to take down the first of Hiruko's henchmen.

Hinata's team fought the second of Hiruko's henchmen, Ni and her chimera nin-dogs, Shino took down Ni's chimera nin-dogs, Ni became angry and used a Chimera Technique fusing herself with a large beast, while Kiba, Hinata, and Akamaru delayed her before Shino built a large pit trap, Hinata then saved Akamaru from Ni's whip. After being teased by Kiba, Ni fell into Shino's trap and was destroyed by Shino's Secret Technique: Insect Sphere. After Team 10 failed to defeat the last of Hiruko's henchmen, San then summoned his two team-mates, Ichi and Ni, and used Chimera Technique, which made them turn into a massive flying beast. Hinata and the rest of Konoha 11 then arrived to back up Team 10, Shikamaru told Tenten to chain the beast's wings to restrict its flight, while all of the Konoha 11, except Shikamaru constricted the beast by holding the chains, Hinata and Neji then channeled their chakra through the chains destroying the beast, before it was re-summoned by Hiruko.

Hinata was later seen at Hiruko's temple, being as part of the Konoha 11 aiding taking down the Chimera that was summoned by Hiruko earlier. Hinata and Neji attacked the beast using the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms technique. Hinata made her last appearance along with the rest of Konoha 11, overhearing Kakashi and Naruto's weird conversation and stating that she never knew Kakashi had such preferences, along with Sakura and Ino, deeply embarrassing him.

Hinata appeared with the other members of the Konoha 11 to help Naruto to fight against Satori. She became extremely worried when Naruto was impaled, but was relieved when he survived due to Ryūzetsu's kekkei genkai technique.

Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie

Hinata first appeared with her friends battling several White Zetsu clones disguised as deceased Akatsuki members. Later, a different version of her appeared in the alternate universe. There, compared to the Hinata that Naruto and Sakura know, Hinata was more assertive and very confident with herself and her figure, dressed in a more provocative attire. Her personality appeared to be similar to Ino. Like her counterpart, the alternate Hinata was in love with the Naruto of her world, but was much more assertive and aggressive about it to the point of threatening any girl with Naruto. This was demonstrated when she calmly told Sakura that if she kept on flirting with Naruto, Hinata would kill her. This resulted in Sakura being terrified and shocked of how bold and aggressive the alternate Hinata was in comparison to the one she knew.

"Awakened" Hinata.

In later instalments of the Clash of Ninja series, she is also playable in an "awakened" form. In this form, her clothes are similar to what she wore during the Bikōchū Search Mission, though the form itself is not based on the events of that arc. Awakened Hinata has a personality similar to Neji's during the Chūnin Exams, arrogantly challenging opponents and boasting about the power of the main branch of the Hyūga clan. While in this form, she is also able to use techniques such as Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms and Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven. In Naruto Shippūden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3, Awakened Hinata can be used in the middle of battle by activating her Byakugan. In previous games, Awakened Hinata had to be specifically chosen during character selection. A similar form has appeared in Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 dubbed 'Byakugan Hinata', with the main difference being she wears the traditional Hyūga attire.

In several of the Ultimate Ninja Storm games, the team combination of Hinata and Naruto is titled "Secret Lovers" or "Joined Hands".

Trivia

Springtime of Youth
The Springtime of Youth wiki has an article about this topic:
  • The name "Hinata" means "place in the sun". It can be written with the same kanji as her family name "Hyūga" (日向).
  • According to the databook(s):
    • Hinata's hobby is pressing flowers.
    • Hinata wishes for a rematch with her cousin Neji, and for a match with her father, Hiashi.
    • Hinata's favourite foods are zenzai and cinnamon rolls, while her least favourite foods are dishes such as crabs and shrimp.
    • Hinata has completed 33 official missions in total: 10 D-rank, 14 C-rank, 8 B-rank, 1 A-rank, 0 S-rank.
    • Hinata's favourite phrase is "self-confidence" (自信, jishin).
    • In the fourth databook, Hinata's name is referred as a pure white lily.[41] In chapter 699, the same flowers were put on Neji's grave.
  • Hinata frequently appears in Naruto character popularity polls, often polled as one of the most popular female characters of the series and making into the top 10 favourite characters.
  • During a 2010 interview, Kishimoto stated that many who work with him have told him Hinata is more heroine than Sakura but that he thinks Sakura really has the strength of a heroine inside her, and from here on out she's ready to show it, too.
    • This is further extended in an omake in Naruto: Shippūden episode 165, where Sakura accuses Hinata of trying to become the main heroine of the series because of her popularity, much to her confusion. She is a main character in the movie, The Last: Naruto the Movie.
    • Later interviews revealed that Kishimoto had been building up Hinata to becoming part of the main cast ever since the Fourth Shinobi World War arc had started.
    • In a series of interviews from 2015, Kishimoto revealed he had planned on Naruto and Hinata getting together since the middle of the manga, even commenting that Naruto and Hinata were meant to be since she acknowledged him before even Iruka. Not only that, Kishimoto confirmed that Hinata was his favourite female character during an interview with Viz in October 2015.
  • In Naruto Shippūden the Movie: The Will of Fire, taking presence possibly before the Three-Tails' Appearance arc, Hinata used the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, but as far as the manga goes, she wasn't able to do so until the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Quotes

  • (To Neji) "I no longer… want to run away!"[59]
  • (To Neji) "I will never go back on my word… Because that too is my nindō, my ninja way!"[60]
  • (To herself) "Naruto… I have always watched you… Watched you for many years… Why? I don't know why, but whenever I look at you… I feel more courage within me… It makes me feel like I can accomplish something if I try… It makes me feel like I am worth something…"[61]
  • (To Naruto) "In my eyes… you're a proud failure! When I look at you, I get an intense feeling in my heart… Because you're not perfect… Because you fail… you have the strength to get back up… Because I believe that is what true strength is…"[62]
  • (To Naruto) "I used to always cry and give up… I made many wrong turns… But you… You helped me find the right path… I always chased after you… I wanted to catch up to you… I wanted to walk beside you all the time… I just wanted to be with you… You changed me! Your smile is what saved me! That is why I'm not afraid to die protecting you! Because… I love you…"[63]
  • (To Shino) "Thank you Shino, but I want to do the best job I can. We're fighting this war to protect Naruto! Failure is not an option!"[64]
  • (To herself) "Naruto… I've always been chasing after you… Even now… But once this war ends, I'm going to stop once and for all… Because next time, I will be by your side, holding your hand… walking with you! Please wait for me!!"[65]
  • (To Naruto) "Neji just said… that your life is not just your own anymore… Do you understand what he meant? Your words and desire to not let your comrades die… Neither of them are lies! What inspired Neji and carried him this far were those very principles! It's not just you, Naruto… we all hold those same words and feelings within our hearts. They're what bind our lives together and make us comrades. If we all give up and discard those words and feelings now, Neji's sacrifice will have been for nothing… And that is when your comrades truly die, for you are no longer comrades then. That's how I feel… Therefore… stand up together with me, Naruto… Because never going back on one's word… is my ninja way too!"[66]
