He was the head ninja (忍頭, shinobigashira) of Kumogakure nine years before the start of the series.

Background

As the head ninja of Kumogakure at the time, he was sent with an envoy to sign a peace treaty with Konohagakure. However, the treaty was nothing more than a means to gain free entry into the village with the covert purpose of abducting a member of the Hyūga clan in order to obtain the Byakugan. During the middle of the night, he snuck onto the Hyūga clan's estate and abducted a young Hinata from her bed. However, Hinata's father, Hiashi, intercepted him during his escape, and quickly killed him. Despite the sinister nature of the visit, it resulted with the death of Hiashi's twin brother Hizashi Hyūga when he assumed his brother's identity to ensure the Byakugan does not fall in enemy hands thanks to his clan's seal.[2]

Personality

The databook described him as being greatly self-confident and someone who only listened to himself.[1]

Appearence

He was a tall, slim man with dark eyes with lines underneath them, black hair and beard. He wore the older-styled Kumo flak jacket which had thick shoulder pads. His head was bandaged and a Kumogakure forehead protector covered his right eye. He wore a black suit of clothing and an obi around his waist.

Legacy

Though the head ninja's actions were horrific, his people demanded the life of his killer Hiashi as compensation as per agreement in the treaty they had signed. Not wanting to risk another war with Kumogakure, Konoha seemingly handed over Hiashi's corpse as a sign of good faith. But in reality, the corpse was Hizashi whose Byakugan was sealed away upon his death to ensure it was not obtained. Though war was averted, Hizashi's son Neji grew to hate the main house until learning of truth of his father's death nine years after the head ninja's death. By the time, as depicted in the anime, a pair Kumogakure ninja attempted to finish their fallen comrade's work started during the Invasion of Konoha and failed.

Trivia

  • In the First Databook he was called the "Head Ninja of the Land of Clouds" (雲の国の忍頭, Kumo no Kuni no Shinobigashira) but in the index for the Third Databook he was renamed to "Head Ninja of Kumogakure" (雲隠れの里の忍頭, Kumogakure no Sato no Shinobigashira).
