"He Flies! He Jumps! He Lurks! Chief Toad Appears!" (飛んだ!跳ねた!潜った!ガマ親分登場!!, Tonda! Haneta! Mogutta! Gama Oyabun Tōjō!!) is episode 57 of the original Naruto anime.

Synopsis

While falling to his death, Naruto manages to summon Gamabunta. Angry that a child summoned him, Gamabunta starts asking where Jiraiya was. In order for Gamabunta to accept Naruto as his underling, he told Naruto that he must stay on his back the whole day without falling off. Meanwhile in Konoha, Temari argues with Baki over breaking the treaty alliance between Konoha and Sunagakure. Later in Suna, Baki reports to the Fourth Kazekage that everything was going according to plan. Gamabunta still tries to shake Naruto off as Jiraiya is doing "research" for his novel by spying on a group of girls. In an attempt to shake Naruto off, Gamabunta lands in a waterfall, scaring off the girls, much to Jiraiya's dismay. This then caused Naruto to fall of the toad's back, but in an effort to stay on the toad's back, he makes a chain of shadow clones to not let Naruto fall off. Tired out, Naruto finally falls off the Chief Toad's back. As a reward for lasting so long, Gamabunta catches Naruto with his tongue, and claimed that no one since the Fourth Hokage had stayed on his back for so long. Knowing that Naruto is depleted of his strength, Gamabunta drops off Naruto at the Konoha Hospital.

[[Jiraiya]] then says that he was finally able to do the [[Summoning Technique]], but the chakra he used was unstable and even summoned "him," Gamabunta, "Even I can't control Gamabunta".

-While Naruto cheers, Gamabunta then shouts: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, YOU LITTLE SNOT!" Naruto then suddenly jumps back in shock. "I get some fresh air! AND THEN WHAT? I GET SUMMONED HERE!!!" Naruto then sits on Gamabunta and said in a little nervous voice, that he summoned Gamabunta. "A little squirt summoned me? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Gamabunta laughs out loud and says that this little squirt couldn't summon Gamabunta. Naruto then gets serious and shouts at Gamabunta: "LOOK! Since I summoned you, big toad! Then I'm supposed to be your master, all right, you stupid toad, acting this at your master!" Gamabunta then shouts back at Naruto, making him fall off Gamabunta and hanging on to his pipe. Naruto grabs on to Gamabunta's nose and was Jiraiya (far away from them) was using his telescope to witness the event. He then hears girls, and looks behind them to see them. "Sorry, Naruto. Wish I can help you, but I have to work on my…research!" Gamabunta then shouts out for Naruto to get off (in which Naruto resists.
-The scene changes to [[Konoha]] where [[Team 10]] went to eat barbecue again. Outside, [[Kankurō]] witnesses of what they're doing. "Heh, they're going to that restaurant again, for a reward for training so hard." [[Temari]] then asks Kankurō that shouldn't he be watching [[Gaara]]? Kankurō then says that he doesn't care, knowing that Gaara won't go away. Kankurō then started to discuss about the plan they're talking about before they came to the Hidden Leaf Village.
-They then think back when [[Baki]] tells them that they'll be joining with the [[Otogakure|Sound]], and annihilate Konoha. Temari starts fighting back that many sacrifices were made to make the Treaty Alliance, if they break it, many people ''will'' die! Baki then says that shinobi are tools, just the same as [[Genin]]. "Ever since the stupid prime minister of our village has made the pact between the Hidden Leaf, our military supplies have been cutting short! Saying that this way will be cheaper! We're suffering, and that's why shinobis like you were created." He then knocks the wall. The picture of the prime minister moves slightly. "That's why at the will of the [[Kazekage]], we'll teach the stupid prime minister of how dangerous we are!" Knocks the wall again, the picture is ready to fall. "We will destroy Konoha! If we don't, our supplies will be short and we will lose our ability!" Knocks the wall, hard for the third time. The picture falls off from the wall and lands with a "thunk!" Baki then says that this mission is fully counting on Gaara.
-The scene changes back to where Gamabunta tries to shake off Naruto. "Got to use my chakra!" Before Naruto could do it, Gamabunta violently shakes Naruto, depleting him time to use chakra. Gamabunta then runs from forest to forest and then jumps to a lake. He then swims on the lake (in which an I-need-a-breath Naruto still holds on) and jumps back up. Then, Gamabunta swims really quick, making it harder for Naruto to hold on. Jiraiya then focuses on Gamabunta and sees that Naruto is really going over his limit. He then hear the girls of how beautiful of the rainbow up in the sky, in which a gleeful Jiraiya agrees (thinking that the girls are referring to him).
-The scene changes to [[Sunagakure]], where in the Kazekage resident, Baki tells the Kazekage that everything is going as planned, saying that the three safely advanced to the Finals of the [[Chūnin Exams]]. Baki then gives a scroll in which it was a pact about joining with the Sound. He was then dispatched (after an argument concerning about why Gaara, Temari, and Kankurō were at the Chūnin Exam) and was then traveling back to Konoha.
-The scene changes where Naruto still holds onto Gamabunta, where it's almost at sunset, "Great! It's almost sunset! Now, I just have to hang on a little more!"(Naruto's thinking). Gamabunta then starts to get really annoyed, and thinks: "It's a shame that I can't ask to get him off, so I'll have to do my only way to do it." Then Gamabunta tells Naruto that he's hoping to ready to die! Jiraiya then sees in shock of what Gamabunta was ready to do. Gamabunta does another great big jump (in which Naruto gets airsick again) and lands heavily on the waterfall (where the girls were). Jiraiya then yells out of what happened to his girls.
-Naruto, shocked by the landing, spins around on top of Gamabunta to balance himself. He then falls off, "No! I can't fall right now! Not when I'm really close!" Naruto then does [[Shadow Clone Technique]] in which about 15 Narutos were standing on top of Gamabunta. Jiraiya was then of how amazed to see that Naruto still had enough stamina to use Shadow Clones. The Narutos then started to make a link (or a chain) to bring up the original Naruto.
-The original Naruto then starts to laugh at the Chief Toad's face and said that he won the deal. He then immediately faints, with Jiraiya in an awe-struck mode in which he knew that if Naruto falls like that, he will die. In mid-point of falling off 100m, Gamabunta catches him in time with his tongue. He then sighs that Naruto has got guts. Jiraiya, relieved, starts to leave, but with a smirk, he throws the scroll where all the humans sign to summon toads. It lands right in front of Gamabunta and then reads Naruto Uzumaki's name, realizing that Naruto did summon him.
-Gamabunta then uses his tongue to roll up Naruto to his back; he then said that no one had dared to ride on his back, other than the [[Fourth Hokage]]. He then knows that Naruto is completely out of strength, so he deides to take him to the hospital. The scene changes to the hospital, "BOOM!" The doctors then look outside to see what happened. But, they only see Naruto on the ground (smiling) and Gamabunta's footprint, leaving it for a signature.
