The Gatō Company (ガトーカンパニー, Gatō Kanpanī, English TV: Gato Transport) is the shipping company operated by Gatō. Though apparently a simple import/export business, this is actually a front for smuggling illegal goods and selling drugs. Gatō has become the richest man in the world as a result, and so he goes to great lengths to protect his interests. Through blackmail and murder, Gatō takes over rival companies and areas of interest. Shortly before the start of the series he takes control of the Land of Waves and monopolizes all of its transportation, cutting the country off from the outside world and destroying its economy.
The thugs hired by Gatō on behalf of the Company (some of the same thugs are in Shinobazu's army.)
Tazuna begins building a bridge to free the Land of Waves from the Gatō Company's influence, so Gatō hires Zabuza Momochi to kill Tazuna. Zabuza is unable to fulfil his job due to interference by Team 7. Gatō then hired a large group of thugs to kill a weakened Zabuza, along with every other combatant on the bridge, in order to save himself from paying Zabuza's high fees. Unfortunately for Gatō, he underestimated Zabuza, who kills him, bringing an end to the Gatō Company and allowing the Land of Waves to finally recover.
