This is the spoiler policy I set up, updated with the new information I got from the Updates forum. Things to add, comments, ect. ect. _____________________________________________________________________________________

This is the Spoiler Policy of Narutopedia.

NOTE: This is not done. Do not adopt into main policy lists.

What is a "Spoiler"

See Spoiler on Wikipedia. The first paragraph from the article;

Spoiler is Genex slang for any element of any summary or description of any piece of fiction that reveals any plot element which will give away the outcome of a dramatic episode within the work of fiction, or the conclusion of the entire work. Because enjoyment of fiction sometimes depends upon the dramatic tension and suspense which arising within it, the external revelation of such plot elements can "spoil" the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced.

Manga Spoiler Release Dates

Due to the dubious nature of scanlation and fansubbed works, Narutopedia, despite when the chapter/volume is released in Japan, the wiki recongizes the chapters release date as THURSDAY.

This is done for two reasons.

    1. Various websites have accesses to chapters before they are publicly released and the information they provide is either incomplete or fake.
    2. Following the standard free release dates of various official websites such as Crunchyroll and Viz Media, these websites typically wait a full week before releaseing new episodes or chapters to none premium members. Because Narutopedia is a free edit wiki, waiting a few days from when the chapters are released online is acceptable.

Anime Spoiler Release Dates

Official episodes of Naruto Shippūden are released on Crunchyroll on Thursday morning at 3:00AM Pacific Time. Therefore, information from those episodes can be added as soon as the episode is officially released.

Reasons for the above and the discrepancy with the manga spoilers:

    1. The episodes are released officially as opposed to fansubbing. Once they are officially online, they are free to be posted.

What happens if you see a Spoiler

If any spoilers are added to any article before Friday, those edits can be removed on sight. Adding comments the articles Talk Page based on spoilers can also be removed on sight. Consequences for adding spoilers before Friday will first be a one day blocking and a warning, then a three day blocking with another warning, then finally a week blocking.

Anyone At All

Because if nobody has anything to add, I can put the finishing touches on it and set it up...--TheUltimate3 (talk) 02:28, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

I still think this is a waste of effort. Reverting initial additions, protecting a dozen pages, removing talk page topics, and then answering questions as to why information can't be added every week consumes too much time. ~SnapperTo 04:10, February 18, 2010 (UTC)
See this for an example. Sasuke's article has been protected eleven times in the last month just so that a legal gray area can be just as much of a legal gray area a few days later. ~SnapperTo 04:20, February 18, 2010 (UTC)
Well, that's Jacce being the diligent one he is. If we get a working policy down, there will be no need for such massive protections.--TheUltimate3 (talk) 04:29, February 18, 2010 (UTC)
A policy seems more like something to link to when someone asks; we'd still need to do the same motions. Though, I notice now, the date has been upped from Friday to Thursday, which is an improvement. Also, to comment on my example: Jacce protects the page to prevent spoilers, which is understandable, but afterwards he needs to restore the semi-protection to prevent vandalism. Obviously that's more the fault of the wiki software, but if there wasn't a need to fully protect every week there'd be no need to semi-protect again afterwards. ~SnapperTo 04:38, February 18, 2010 (UTC)
Well...in theory, we wouldn't have to protect the pages from spoilers at all. Potential social experiment (with a high chance of blowing up in my face) is that, given that the wiki will recognize chapter releases on Thursday (I still see Wednesday releases and as anomaly, not a norm. But that's just me.), most users will be more willing to wait (if it's released early) a few hours as opposed to a day.
On the grounds of all those protections...well...I'm not quite sure about the vandal protections. At some point I want to see seme-protections dropped and again test the waters.--TheUltimate3 (talk) 04:47, February 18, 2010 (UTC)
While I agree that it is anomalous for chapter to be available on Wednesday, I think that the spoiler policy should revolve not only around when the chapter is released, but also by whom. I think that provided that the scanlation group is reliable (Binktopia, who unfortunately seems to have stopped scanlating Naruto, Mangastream, those ^.^ guys who did some very good scanlations), or that the translator is reliable (HissouBakorunen, did I spell it right?), there shouldn't be any problem with adding new info. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 14:42, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

Personally, I would also use an available raw as a requirement. No matter who does the translation, it is always unreliable if there isn't a source text that can be used to check it. I have seen every translator and translation group make big errors. --ShounenSuki (talk | contribs) 17:13, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

I take it this is still the place for discussion about the spoiler policy, although it already has gone into effect...
I have just one think to say right now: add a time zone. "Spoilers" of chapter 484 were still being removed when it was already Thursday for hours in practically every part of the world, except for the Americas. This needs to be cleared up. --ShounenSuki (talk | contribs) 03:30, February 25, 2010 (UTC)
Yes yes, it is still up for discussion. I brute forced it into use because 1) I didn't want to wait another week of bull crap and 2) This was the best way to force discussion.) Well, yes I am completely unaware on global dates and I have used the American time. That probably does need to be looked at.--TheUltimate3 (talk) 03:37, February 25, 2010 (UTC)
I figured this issue was overlooked (insert joke about US egocentrism here). Just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention. As I write this, it has been Thursday for almost 5 hours where I live and for almost 13 hours in Japan. --ShounenSuki (talk | contribs) 03:45, February 25, 2010 (UTC)
More like my ignorance that the entire planet at the very least worked within the same day of each other. Hm. THat may explain why the wiki keeps labeling time after 8 or 9 to be the next day...--TheUltimate3 (talk) 04:16, February 25, 2010 (UTC)
That might be a convenient guideline; spoilers cannot be added until the wiki's default X-day. Although, I'd still prefer just going by whenever the chapter is available, be it X-day or D-day. ~SnapperTo 05:28, February 25, 2010 (UTC)

I'm feeling test-y today (ho ho ho. I made a funny) So we're gonna brute force that idea Snapper2 and see how it plays next week.--TheUltimate3 (talk) 11:23, February 25, 2010 (UTC)

What is the wiki's default timezone? I know datestamps in sigs have UTC timestamp, but I don't think that's the default timezone. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 11:39, February 25, 2010 (UTC)
Are you sure it's not UTC? That's the timezone it seems to use when not using the timezone users selected in their preferences. --ShounenSuki (talk | contribs) 12:36, February 25, 2010 (UTC)
The change I saw when I selected my timezone in the preferences was that recent changes had their times listed according to my timezone, same with article history changes, but the timestamp in sigs still is done in UTC. It's 9:40 where I am now, but my sig in this will list it as 12:40. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 12:40, February 25, 2010 (UTC)

What about speculation relating to the upcoming chapter? Is that counted as a Spoiler? And, is there any place where users are allowed to discuss such opinions?
