Revisiting this Topic

Greetings users of Narutopedia,

A few of you may be familiar with me, as I occasionally contribute on this wiki, and yet others of you may recognize me from the Naruto Fanon Wiki. I have come here in light of the recent decision on Wookieepedia and the Star Wars Fanon Wiki to merge the canon and fanon wikis together to provide on solid, fan-based encyclopedia on the content of that particular universe. In the past, there have been whispers and short discussions around Narutopedia about the debate on whether to allow or not to allow fan-content on this wiki.

I have come here, as one of the few active admins on Naruto Fanon Wiki, to propose a merge between our two wikis. A lot of the canon content you all have produced has made its way over to Naruto Fanon, or is often linked there, due to your excellent work in maintaining the information on this site. I do believe there would be a great benefit on both our parts for a wiki merge. I will detail this below. Keep in mind that I am completely serious about this proposal, and would like it to at least be discussed before being shot down, as I believe it could really aid us both.

Why a merge?

As many of you may have noticed, Naruto Fanon Wiki is declining in it's content quality. Numerous attempts have been made to correct this and set the wiki back up on its feet, but all have ended in failure thus far. However, Naruto Fanon Wiki has a lot of users that visit and edit the site on a daily basis; many of those users also read Narutopedia, but don't contribute.

A merge could be beneficial to our two wikis on two separate accords; it would allow the Naruto Fanon a breath of fresh air, per say. A chance to start over and do things right from the beginning. With Narutopedia's stern, yet fair admins, as well as the direction of new policies that must be followed, canon and fanon content can thrive side-by-side, turning this wiki into the source on all things Naruto; fan made of canon.

On Narutopedia's side of things, it will drastically increase the users that visit and edit your wiki on a daily basis. People who may have felt that they didn't belong, or maybe believed they couldn't positively contribute to Narutopedia will now do so, which will allow for a whole host of new ideas as well as a large workforce, which will help the site grow and develop.

What Would Need to be Done?

Obviously, simply smashing the two sites together would be a horrible idea and defeat the purpose of what we are trying to do. A lot would need to be done to ensure that this merge could be done successfully so that this wiki maintains its policies, and could rightfully adapt to the new content. Obviously, this would take time. Time would be needed to discuss the issue, and then, if we decide in favor of the merge, we would need time to gather ideas and test them before actually implementing the merge. Below are a few topics needing discussion should we decide to move forward.

  1. First of all, new templates would need to be developed to distinguish Fanon from Canon material. Categories could do this, as well as a Fanon equivalent to a "Spoiler Tag". Also, the topic of Fanon content on Cannon articles would need to be discussed. The way Wookieepedia is discussing doing it is with the above mentioned spoiler tags, which would then allow a separation of information. Another alternative would be to have a "Fanon" section on the page, or introduce a tab system that allows for a Canon and Fanon page of canon characters and content. These are only a few suggestions for discussion.
  2. Content policies would need to be updated/created to monitor the do's and don'ts of creating fanon content on the wiki. Obviously, we don't want users running around claiming their character is the child of Madara Uchiha or the father of the Sage of the Six Paths, so policies restricting these things could be implemented to prevent such craziness. If we created a good amount of decent "controller policies", Narutopedia could then retain its reputation as the foremost encyclopedia on the series of Naruto, while also providing a place for the fan-base to express themselves. Star Wars Fanon, which is now merging with Wookieepedia, has excellent content policies that restrict craziness and promote good writing and good faith in all cases, which is what makes the wiki so good. Avatar Wiki also allows for fan content, so ideas from both of these examples could help us with coming up with policies for the merged Naruto Wikis.
  3. The administration would need to adjust for the influx of users that would be coming in, as well as to deal with the massive new content coming into the wiki. New administrators would be needed, and more well-defined jobs for these administrators would need to be given. This will ensure rules are enforced and the merge goes smoothly.

Closing Statement

Like I said above, this is a serious proposal, and one I truly believe can work if done right. However, there has to be a heart for it. Many Narutopedia users may be skeptical about a merge, or may flat out not want it. I am here to tell you, though, that not only can it be done, but, if done correctly, it will drastically improve the site as a whole; increasing its popularity, views, and editors by quite a significant margin.

As one of the only active admins currently on Naruto Fanon Wiki, as well as a user of that wiki since October of 2008, I would be wholeheartedly willing to work side-by-side with the admins on this site to make sure everyone's needs are met, and that everyone is satisfied with the end result. I hope you will all seriously consider this and discuss it in the coming days and weeks. Ten Tailed Fox (Talk with me) 19:56, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

I can already predict an answer for this.. -White Flash-(Talk)- 20:14, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

The answer is almost certainly going to be a "no". --Speysider (Talk Page) 20:15, April 1, 2012 (UTC)
I have a feeling it might be too, but, nonetheless, it should be brought up. It is a good discussion to have, and an important one as well. Ten Tailed Fox (Talk with me) 20:19, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

I loved your proposal first of all. It was well put together and thought out. (This is the bad part now) I don't think we should merge. It's odd to find that a fanon wiki is struggling since I thought everything goes there but this wikia is supposed to deal with cold hard facts, chronicling the naruto story. I know for one it'd be confusion trying to separate factual articles from fanon ones and vandals would have a field day with that. Though I'm not an Admin, but I can't really say I'd see any of them going for this ._.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol 20:20, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

The fanon wiki is stuggling because of content. We have a lot of editors, but the fact is that when the wiki was formed, no policies to monitor the wiki were put in place, and by the time I took over the administration of the site, it was too hard to get a handle on the situation. For one, I don't enough trustworthy admins to help with the situation (the majority of them act the same as the regular users) and there are far too many articles for me alone to go through a manage the junk from the keepers. Nevertheless, I respect your opinion and realize that this maybe harder than I thought. I still think it would be beneficial, but that is up for you all to decide, thus why I presented it to you. Ten Tailed Fox (Talk with me) 20:26, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

Hmm... I'm thinking that it may be possible for you to sort this out with a change in management style. You might have to take a hard line with them in order to bring about the change.

  • Come down more heavily on them with regards to behaviour- remove their rights and promote people who actually uphold policies and such.
  • You could also form taskforces and break the work up into sections have them work alongside you to weed out the junk and stuff.
  • Oh, and possibly stop the creation on new articles for a while (if that's possible) and have the wikia concentrate on cleaning it up.

I'm sure there are people there willing to take on the task, just seems that you either need to explain, be more firm with them and get a good team around yourself.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol 20:35, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

Hmmmm, that is a good point. If this falls through, I will definitely be taking your suggestions back to the wiki and implementing them. Ten Tailed Fox (Talk with me) 20:41, April 1, 2012 (UTC)
I'll send you the bill for my consultation. ;D--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol 20:57, April 1, 2012 (UTC)
xD I hope its not too pricey, what with the economy these days. Ten Tailed Fox (Talk with me) 21:05, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

The answer is no. We have plenty of people viewing the site, we are in the top 10 of wikia's subdomains. — SimAnt 22:05, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

Very well, I will respect your judgement. Ten Tailed Fox (Talk with me) 22:08, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

It is pricey. Fried chicken isn't cheap anymore =\ Anywho, go get Hitler on them on your wikia and good luck (^_~) b --Cerez365Hyūga Symbol 22:18, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

Well, I somehow also disagree on this proposal, but I read here about the Fanon wiki and I thought it's doing well since I also went last summer to create my articles. If you want, I can help you on the Fanon wiki (if you want). Good luck about the site. :))

Star Wars is doing this now? Oh boy another site falls to the way side. Avatar:TLA wiki has been doing this for a while and its dreadful, thus why I never if ever contribute there. Another thing, one of your admins has a bad attitude, something we don't need here. Another problem is the fact that we are busy finding sources for missing info to games such as the un series, and by doing something like this now we have to add fanon content to our watch. I know your also in control of Bleach fanon wiki, have you proposed the idea to Bleach wiki. Honestly if they agree to a merge with your Bleach Fanon wiki, then you have my support here. My vote is no. And yes I know I am not a admin or mod but I have contributed for a while.Umishiru (talk) 22:30, April 2, 2012 (UTC)

Also, skimming the Star Wars page, it looks to be a April Fools Joke.Umishiru (talk) 22:40, April 2, 2012 (UTC)

I had the same hunch, but I have the highest doubt the Bleach Wiki will merge with it's fan fiction site. -White Flash-(Talk)- 00:34, April 3, 2012 (UTC)
I hate the Bleach wiki. They don't know how to create a summary. Their articles are way too long compare to Narutopedia.
--IndxcvNovelist (Talk to Me) 17:49, April 3, 2012 (UTC)
The thing about Bleach wiki is that they are strict to the point of being known as the nazis among the wiki sites. That is why I leave my vote with them. If such a group wouldn't mind such a thing then I wouldn't either. Here is another problem. DB wiki and others wiki's has enabled blogs. The problem is that most of activity at the site is blog actvity and forum/trolling drama associated with such a thing. If we were to bring fanon material here then possibly the fanon actvity could clutter up the recent activity making it harder to look at recent edits and catch vandals. Then there is the issue of images. Fanon sites use picturs from various anime an dmanga of varying quality, it would clog up the recnt images section as well. Someone who uploads a pic that normaly maybe delete could now use teh "it fanon material" excuss to keep on here without any gurantee that it will be used as such. That also means that non-naruto images in terms of origin will clutter it as well. Then there is also how are we going to deal with the 10,000 articles on your sites, are you able to do a mass deletion because the lastthing this wiki wants to do is comb through over 10,000 pages of fanon material to cull and we sure don't want staying here(the bad fanon) out of overwhelmnigness.Umishiru (talk) 20:38, April 3, 2012 (UTC)
↑That. One more thing about the DB Wiki is that they're more opened towards socialize, so they could possibly merge with it's fan fiction site. I wouldn't say the Bleach Wiki is turning into a nazi-like Wiki, they just have a strict image policy. -White Flash-(Talk)- 21:56, April 3, 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, but what do you mean Nazi-like? Lol, by the way, Bleach is only edited by FEW people. I used to edit words there, like 'residing' to 'who resides', and they reverted it. I hate Bleach wiki. Okay, I'm giving my opinion now. For me Narutopedia is the best wiki. For the merge, I think it's not necessary. Probably being a brother/sister site is quite a good idea. We don't know what will happen to the merge; Umishiru said it well. Compare to Narutopedia, we only concentrate of editing articles and improving articles to a great extent. When we merge with the Fanon wiki, the readers MAY confuse fanon articles to canon articles, even with a tag, sometimes people just scroll it down. Plus the problem it will put on admins of Narutopedia as well as others of Naruto Fanon. Admins of Narutopedia aren't very active compare to us users. Users might be a very bad problem. We will need more admins. Plus who will really lead the entire site, is it Narutopedia's admin or Naruto Fanon's admin. Also if Dantman would agree. Then the Articles, I hate that it'll come to the point that the canon was outnumbered by the fanon. Maintaining this site would be a big problem when that happens. But still if a big problem happens to the Fanon site, I'm here to help! :D

Db wiki has more problems anyway. Last I checked there was a civil war caused by the blogs and all those wanting fanfiction formed their own db site. Db wiki has no reason to socialize considering its not even accepted as a resources or respectable encyclopedia among the fanbase in other forums for one reason or another. As for Bleach wiki, your really misunderstanding what I am saying, so lets just drop it, the guy who created this forum topic knows what I am getting at and that is all that is important for that anyway. Other than that I generally agree.Umishiru (talk) 17:47, April 4, 2012 (UTC)

As moderator in Vocaloid Wikia I don't think is a good idea. In fact, we have to do the opposite to your suggestion, banish the fandom of the wikia (something ironic, considering the Vocaloid's phenomenon was build by the fandom). Since then our quality has improved, there still a lot of work to do. However finally our organization and policies are working. Adept-eX (talk) 19:01, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
