Narutopedia Discussion Quotes Policy

It's been talked about multiple times on the wiki before, but nothing ever got finalized to a point where we could say we had an actual policy or consensus. So I'm going to give the quotes policy discussion a push and see if we can come up with a consensus on implementing rules around use of quotes sections on the wiki.

For note, old quotes discussions: Forum:Quotes and Forum:Quotes, Romanji, and Naming#Quotes.

We had another discussion on some random character talkpage, but I can't remember which one.

To start, I'll try to list the issues with the quote sections:

  • There are a number of pointless quotes inside quote sections. Not just quotes which aren't really significant to a character, but ones that are downright useless like them shouting the name of a jutsu.
  • A lot of the quotes aren't even verified properly. Quite frankly, I have a strong feeling that there are a large number of quotes on the wiki that aren't literal quotes. They've either been modified by some random person, or are a fangroups interpretation of a character's words which means they aren't even a proper quote, and don't even match up with the official English.

Here is the guidelines under my proposal:

  • All quotes will be put into a Quotes:''Character Name'' namespace just like we have Infobox:''Character Name''.
  • Just like with the new character infobox setup quotes will be included in a page using a Quotes template.
  • Pages in this namespace will be automatically protected so only sysops can modify the quotes.
    • This is done to prevent the huge pile of unverified quotes that slip into pages. There is no real other reliable way to handle this than that.
    • If a staff can't do this, we'll probably try to make use of cascading protection and work around what that would to do articles by using lst/dpl rather than standard transclusion.
  • New quotes can be suggested in sections on the relevant Quotes talk:''Character Name'' page.
  • Obviously pointless quotes like characters shouting jutsu names will be outright rejected.
  • The quote section on the talkpage must contain...
    • ...a proper rationale as to why the quote is relevant to that character.
    • ...a precise citation to where the quote can be found (Chapter and Page, Series, Episode #, and ideally a relative location in the episode)
  • Quotes must come from a proper official source.
    • Quotes from fansubs and scanalations will be rejected as they are not proper quotes from the characters, but are rather translations by a fan group which 99.99% of the time is not the same as the actual quote that is placed into official media.
    • ..thus, quotes must be from:
    • The official English translated manga.
    • The official English anime dub.
    • Or the official English anime subtitles now being broadcast on crunchyroll and directly by viz on sites like hulu.

Suggestions, feedback, and agreements to show we have consensus are welcome. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Apr 6, 2009 @ 06:41 (UTC)

I completely agree with this setup, wish I could help with the implimention when a quote has been verified. If for some reason though that this doesn't work we should just elimante the quote section entirely. ¥ Super Novice Talk 2 Me ¥ 14:52, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Dantman I think I found one of the Talkpages you were talking about here:
It may be one of those. ¥ Super Novice Talk 2 Me ¥ 16:24, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
I think this policy should work, although it will likely be a lot of work for the sysops. However, I must say I find it a shame this policy leaves no room for the original Japanese quotes... I always found it a shame those weren't in any way represented. I guess one can't have everything. --ShounenSuki (talk | contribs) 16:50, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
I see no reason why original Japanese quotes can't be used....they are just a B to find. I mean literally, it's like really hard. I mean I know somewhere in some back alley where Suki gets his raws and the like will be littered with them, but for the rest of the people...they are really hard to find. I myself use Mangahelpers cause they have members who somehow gets the original Japanese manga, post the texts and then have translators translate it. THen every week they delete the post and I'm back to square one....--TheUltimate3 (talk) 18:25, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
I think ShounenSuki's "back alley" is something to the tune of amazon.co.jp. ~SnapperTo 18:57, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Staff created the Quotes: namespace, though they don't want to do any autoprotecting it till they see more consensus or input on it (From the rest of the admins? 90% of our admins have already commented?). ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) May 11, 2009 @ 06:13 (UTC)

Is there a preference with which English source is used? The anime and manga tend to differ on wording, and the manga tends to differ between printings. ~SnapperTo 18:57, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
I suppose that isn't something that matters much. In general someone will find a quote, post a new section on the quote talkpage, and put a reference. The only thing that matters there is that they have a reference to an official source, whichever it came from is dependent on where the person who pointed it out grabbed it. Though if the manga differs between printings the anime might be a better pick. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) May 11, 2009 @ 19:38 (UTC)

Hmm, well I didn't expect many responses. But could people at least make a note on what they think. Even +1 posts on the autoprotection would be helpful. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) May 26, 2009 @ 20:23 (UTC)

I wud think, silence, is a general form of agreement...If anyone disagreed they wud state so, but if u agree, then u can just let it go..Well, that's me anyway..AlienGamer | Talk 20:28, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

I know it's been over a year and a half, but whatever happened to these ideas and suggestions? I personally wouldn't mind if the whole quotes section was removed. Maybe it would look better if there was just one quote describing the character at the top like some other wikis. Any thoughts or suggestions? ~ FmakckTalkContributions 21:50, February 9, 2011 (UTC)
