Hi, Recently, as part of improving the viewing experience of both photos and videos, we a developed new lightbox for wikia. It is now live on a handful of wikis, and we would like to start rolling out the new version of the lightbox to more wikis, including Yugioh. You might be wondering, what is new in this version? Improvements include:

  • View all types of media (photos and videos) the same lightbox across your wiki (please note that videos that are embedded at width of 320px or larger will play in place on your article and will not launch the lightbox)
  • Continuous viewing - when viewing an item in the lightbox, you can advance through all other photos and videos from the article page
  • Share - you can now easily share out to multiple social media sites and by email right from the lightbox In the new share, the share URLs will share context by sending your friend to the original article page from which you shared with the lightbox loaded with the shared photo or video and all other photos available on the article page loaded into the carousel.
  • Better viewing experience - the lightbox is now larger and displays the maximum possible size of the photos so you can see your media in its best form.

You can see the lightbox in action on Diablo wiki and the Assassin's creed wiki.

Please let me know if this wiki is ok with being in the next group to receive the new lightbox, as well as any questions or concerns you may have. Thanks, --Sarah (help forum | blog) 21:07, June 12, 2012 (UTC)

umm... i don't know we do need that, no offence Kunoichi101 (talk) 23:29, June 12, 2012 (UTC)Kunoichi101

I dunno. It sounds interesting (with the exception of the video bit since we don't use those). Could you give a more detailed example of what was done on the two mentioned wikis? I don't visit those wiki so I'm ignorant to the changes that were made.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 01:24, June 13, 2012 (UTC)

Uh..You mean this Assassin Creed Wiki? The one you linked to has no "lightbox". -White Flash-(Talk)- 04:27, June 13, 2012 (UTC)

I don't like the new lightbox imo. The current one here is fine as it's simple and not full of stuff that's not needed. --Speysider Talk Page | My Image Uploads | Tabber Code | My Wiki | Channel 11:59, June 13, 2012 (UTC)
Oops bad link, thanks White Flash for the correct one. The lightbox is the box that pops up when you click on an image. It will show allow you to scroll through all images on the page, and if your wiki were to have video, that would get added there as well. You can also see a larger version of the photo, as well as share out from there. Its also live on Lord of the rings, Harry Potter and a couple of other wikis. --Sarah (help forum | blog) 16:24, June 13, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I see it now. I kinda like it. It's functions pretty much the same as the current one but allows you to scroll through all the images at once. I'd have liked though if you clicked "more info" the rationale and license on our images would come up as well. Any way, given that it's really cosmetic in nature, I'm not too sure the rest of the community would go for it but as of now, I'm on the fence with this one.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 16:59, June 13, 2012 (UTC)
I am also on the fence. It's not invasive in any way. Just a more direct way to look at the images on the page. Different, but not to different than what we already have.--TheUltimate3 Allied Shinobi Forces Symbol (talk) 17:23, June 13, 2012 (UTC)
Seems a more easier way to look at images, yeah I like it but might as well let everyone share their opinion of it first. -White Flash-(Talk)- 18:10, June 13, 2012 (UTC)
Looks and functions ok for all I can see. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 22:28, June 13, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. Are we good to go on enabling it here? This will be coming to the rest of the site in the next couple of months (there is currently a code freeze due to the Mediawiki upgrade) but we would love to have it live here now. Please let me know. Thanks! --Sarah (help forum | blog) 16:01, June 14, 2012 (UTC)

I think we need a bit more consensus possibly but I have another question in the meantime. Say it's enabled here and the community overall starts having issues with it, can it be just as easily disabled? --Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 16:24, June 14, 2012 (UTC)
Yes, we can disable if it is causing issues. Part of the reason we are asking select wikis to enable this early is so we can make sure that we get all the kinks worked out before it goes sitewide. --Sarah (help forum | blog) 16:37, June 14, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, ok. Well even though there two admins that posted and seem fine with it, once they give a final "go ahead" I'm all for it. Also, another question (sorry o.o) are they customisable in any way, or is it just one standard cross-wiki format? --Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 16:41, June 14, 2012 (UTC)
No opposition on my part. Maybe give one or two more days for people who don't often come here so they get a chance to see this, but I don't see this particular change having much backlash here. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 20:26, June 14, 2012 (UTC)

LOL this is a Facebook-like feature am I right? I don't like this since this would turn-wiki-into-Facebook but it's up to majority. ~IndxcvNovelist (talk | contribs | PR | RLS) 08:39, June 15, 2012 (UTC)

Even so, it can be turn off. Though once it goes sitewide, I really hope it's something that can be turn on or off in the Wiki Feature page. -White Flash-(Talk)- 08:48, June 15, 2012 (UTC)

Doesn't quite seem a Facebook-like feature to me. It resembles the way tumblr sometimes displays images when you click them, kinda creating a page overlay and showing the images as a list you can go right or left to see them. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 14:32, June 15, 2012 (UTC)

Anybody else got to try of this feature? Because i've encountered it on other wikia's and it's a bit flawed. If you click one image out of 100, say on the main page, you'll have to wait until all the images load before you can see the one. The transitions also a bit faulty and you can't access the photo details. With all that, I'm having second thoughts '~' --Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 13:26, July 21, 2012 (UTC)

I think it's because of the new MediaWiki upgrade they're installing. -White Flash-(Talk)- 13:55, July 21, 2012 (UTC)
Oh. Well then I'll wait until they're done to see whether there's any change or no. Thanks much.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 16:29, July 21, 2012 (UTC)
The lightbox has been rolled out to all English wikis that are on 1.19, so you will see it in many other places now. If you see any bugs, please let me know asap. Thanks! --Sarah (help forum | blog) 18:19, July 23, 2012 (UTC)
We're still with 1.16, so it figures we wouldn't be seeing it. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 19:06, July 23, 2012 (UTC)
Something on the bugs Sarah, but some Wikis that have 1.19 shows a decrease in number of pages and those pages were not deleted. —White Flash 19:28, July 23, 2012 (UTC)

The page count issues is ticketed and the tech team is working on it along with the other bugs that popped up with the upgrade. --Sarah (help forum | blog) 21:23, July 23, 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. —White Flash 06:17, July 24, 2012 (UTC)

Uhm, what's 1.16 and 1.19 o.O? --Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 12:08, July 24, 2012 (UTC)

MediaWiki versions. --http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3.png(Talk to me) 12:16, July 24, 2012 (UTC)

Here it is. --http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3.png(Talk to me) 12:19, July 24, 2012 (UTC)

After seeing this a bit on here, I'm not really liking it a lot. It's cumbersome and slow to load. Is there any way to go back to the older lightbox ? --Speysider Talk Page | My Image Uploads | Tabber Code | My Wiki | Channel 10:44, August 16, 2012 (UTC)

Yes. Offcourse there is. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3.pnghttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3talk.png 10:51, August 16, 2012 (UTC)

Well, what is the workaround ? --Speysider Talk Page | My Image Uploads | Tabber Code | My Wiki | Channel 10:59, August 16, 2012 (UTC)

Would require a javascript code like in my js. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3.pnghttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3talk.png 11:02, August 16, 2012 (UTC)

Hi, This feature is now live across all wikis 1.19, and can not be removed. You are welcome to modify your personal js if you want to change it for your personal view. Where are you seeing it slow to load? I am happy to share this back and have the technical team review, since it should not be slower than the old lightbox. Any links to pages where you are seeing this would be helpful. Thanks, Sarah (help forum | blog) 16:28, August 16, 2012 (UTC)
It's slow because it's loading every other image that exists on the wiki, which can sometimes cause the browser to freeze. Make it so it only loads a small number of latest images, maybe 6 other images and it might load quicker. --Speysider Talk Page | My Image Uploads | Tabber Code | My Wiki | Channel 16:53, August 16, 2012 (UTC)
I'm starting to think this feature is a bit annoying, whenever I click an image this large white line appears in the middle. -White Flash-(Talk)- Aug 16, 2012 @ 17:09 (UTC)
Opposite for me, not having as much an issue with it as before. It's slow sometimes yes, but otherwise than that, I'm not having any real issues with it.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 17:28, August 16, 2012 (UTC)
Also Sarah, if I don't want to use my personal js. to change how the lightbox looks can I use MediaWiki? -White Flash-(Talk)- Aug 16, 2012 @ 17:41 (UTC)
I assume I'm not seeing this lightbox is because I'm still using MonoBook, correct?--TheUltimate3 Allied Shinobi Forces Symbol (talk) 17:46, August 16, 2012 (UTC)
Yes that is correct - it does not appear in monobook. --Sarah (help forum | blog) 20:42, August 16, 2012 (UTC)

@White Flash: If you mean Common.js or Wikia.js, it would be against their TOU. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3.pnghttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s145/urbancowgurl777/UltimateSupreme2212-3talk.png 00:48, August 17, 2012 (UTC)

I had a hunch it would be. -White Flash-(Talk)- Aug 17, 2012 @ 00:54 (UTC)
