So, I recently rediscovered this site I used to use a long time ago to make some light editing to images we use, such as cropping. I noticed that I can open jpg files in it, and save them as png. We all know that we prefer png files over jpg for technical reasons. I think that is possible to use that site to "convert" our jpg files into pngs. The only potential topics of discussion I bring forth are the following:

  • Pngs are heavier than jpgs. If we change completely, I'm not sure how that will impact page weight and load time of the wiki in general. If this is an issue, and someone has a good understanding of how to do it, we can use tools such as PNGOUT to optimise the files, making them smaller by removing metadata.
  • We have several jpg files. As OCD as I can be with doing things thoroughly (for example, game jutsu translation), there's no way I can reupload all jpgs as pngs. I would need help.

Thoughts? Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 17:55, July 13, 2013 (UTC)

No real personal issue with this if people want to proceed using .png from here if we can confirm that it won't adversely affect load time etc for readers. If I'm able to, of course i'll be more than happy to help. Question though, would this be used with .jpg manga files as well? --Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 18:02, July 13, 2013 (UTC)
Batch converter would be faster. I've used IrfanView in the past.
Although this seems like a waste of time. PNG is preferred because JPG has a quality loss. Converting JPG to PNG will not gain that quality back. ~SnapperTo 22:25, July 13, 2013 (UTC)
Maybe not in the actual file, but certainly in the articles. Whenever I see a scaled down file in an article, pngs always look ok, but jpgs always look like they have artifacts on them. Look through volume cover images in their respective volume pages. There are some jpgs there, and you can see the distortion in the articles. Maybe you need a sample. Convert an image, replace it, and then diff both versions of the page. ~SnapperTo 22:35, July 13, 2013 (UTC)
Just did. Compare Guren's image in her infobox with the jpg file (second to last revision) and the converted png file (current revision). Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 22:43, July 13, 2013 (UTC)
For other people's use: PNG vs. JPG.
I notice a difference when my face is three inches away from the screen. If that's enough for other people... ~SnapperTo 22:49, July 13, 2013 (UTC)
Really? I actually measured the distance between my eyes and the screen right now, 1 foot 8 inches and I can see the different, and the glasses I'm wearing right now have my old prescription. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 22:56, July 13, 2013 (UTC)
Hyperbole. The point was that I do not notice while at my usual distance from the screen. ~SnapperTo 23:04, July 13, 2013 (UTC)
  • The load time wouldn't be affected due to Wikia's Lazy Load Technology (or were you thinking of something like this?).
  • Is there a batch convertor there because otherwise you can do the same thing with Paint as well.
  • You might want to use MultipleUpload. But the potential problem is of MIME types. So you might wait until Bugzilla:4421 is solved or run a bot to change .jpg to .png in articles. ~ UltimateSupreme 05:21, July 14, 2013 (UTC)
I'm fine with this, jpg's just don't really look all that great on the internet because they're smaller and therefore quality loss occurs, whereas PNG's preserve all quality making for a good picture. This is especially important when we're uploading mainly HD images here (either 720p or 1080p). Also, in reference to the links Snapper2 posted, the JPG has a slightly lighter tinge to the background and face that the PNG's don't have.
Another thing: if you plan on converting the JPG's to PNG's, you will likely want to consider fixing all the images that are in the wrong aspect ratio, as there a lot of pictures on here that are not in proper ratio's, causing distortion (amplified greatly by the fact that most incorrect aspect images are in JPG format, causing further quality loss and excessive blurriness) --Speysider Talk Page | My Image Uploads | Tabber Code | Channel 14:50, July 15, 2013 (UTC)
There was a time a long time ago I did go around fixing some images in the aspect ratio sense, but I haven't really seen that sort of error lately. At least I haven't looked for it. I think the hardest images to find that would be the cropped images, unless there's metadata that shows the aspect ratio to be incorrect. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 00:15, July 18, 2013 (UTC)
Not sure if they were all fixed and can't check to confirm because my internet is equivalent to dial up. >_> --Speysider Talk Page | My Image Uploads | Tabber Code | Channel 11:06, July 18, 2013 (UTC)
To add onto one point Omnibender mentioned in the opening message, when my internet connection gets fixed back to the proper speeds, I can always lend a hand in fixing the incorrectly ratio'd images into PNG format. :) --Speysider Talk Page | My Image Uploads | Tabber Code | Channel 20:26, July 18, 2013 (UTC)
