I have always pondered over the process of gaining the Chunin rank. In the present, Genin have to enter the Chunin Exam to gain it. But the Chunin Exam was said to be a substitute for wars between countries. So before the Chunin ´Exam´ started, did the Genin only need to show themselves worthy in some oother way to gain the new rank? —This unsigned comment was made by 94.255.142.46 (talkcontribs) .

Guess

Maybe they just needed to perform an act of unusual strength, loyalty, or something like that. Just my guess... —This unsigned comment was made by 4evainmyhart71296 (talkcontribs) .

It's also safe to say that Chūnin "promotion" was like a regular military promotion. If you'll notice, most of the ninja who lived before the Chūnin Exams have been promoted at least years after they graduated, to which they could have become Chūnin at younger ages due to their talent and skills.

Examples: Anko Mitarashi - Grad Age:10 Promotion: 12 Kurenai Yuhi Grad Age:9 Promotion: 13 Asuma Sarutobi Grad Age: 9 Promotion: 12

I can only point out an exception, which is Kakashi, who was promoted a year after he graduated. Still, he's an extremely talented ninja, so he might have been really good.Darkerratum (talk) 04:08, March 1, 2011 (UTC)

That's most likely the case, due to the fact the test that are now done is to show-off skills in: spying, survival, teamwork, logistices/ strategical thinking, ablity to follow orders and battle skills. And even if you make it ot the finnal and win the tournament, you can still end up at the same rank or get promotive after your frist fight in the finnal tournament. An example would be Shikamaru Nara who showed said ablity or Kakashi Hatake, both who everyone can agree are worthy of that rank at their time of getting said rank. —This unsigned comment was made by 76.219.85.145 (talkcontribs) .

In the naruto fan book it say's you don't have to just do the chunin exams. There are other way's like just say a genin does something remarkable like do a b-rank mission and does really well. The Higher ups of that village will promote that shinobi for exceeding in skills passed a genin. —This unsigned comment was made by Hikaku Uchiha (talkcontribs) .
