Administrative Declaration

And now is the perfect time for me to flex my administrative muscle and tell everyone that this has gone on for far too long. If you think it has or has not, the Image War will end now.

  • 1: Take a good look at the images we have up now. Under no circumstances, will these images be changed for a period pending one (1) month.
An image is old and can be replaced with a "high-quality" image? Tough. It will not change.

Don't like a characters image? Tough. It will not change.

  • 2: Any and all Image Proposals are closed, following the declaration above. No change will be reflected in the articles.
  • 3: Any move to circumvent the above two declarations will result in a week long suspension.
  • 4: New images are allowed to be uploaded and placed into articles as normal, as long as they do not replace any existing picture in the article.
Example; next episode of Naruto airs and screenshots are taken, they can be uploaded as normal.
Example; New episode airs and a screenshot Naruto Uzumaki using Shadow Clone Technique is taken, that image will not replace any picture of the Shadow Clone Technique in Naruto's article or the techniques.

This declaration is effective immediately. Have an issue, take it to my talk page or this page only. Any where else be in violation of Declaration 2 and will result in a week long suspension.

Clarfications by TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 19:30, May 18, 2012 (UTC)

Why is this even happening?

Because for close to two months, the wiki has been in a long Image War stretched out across several articles. Images would be uploaded, replaced, uploaded some more, and endlessly debated with no real end in sight. Attempts to discuss why we are even having these discussions turn into flame wars until they fizzle out on their own, only to ignite again later.

I'm a little confused. If I upload an image I'm gonna get banned?

I would be lying if I said no.

Basically as of May 18, 2012, all images in their articles are not to be changed, nor the files they were uploaded in. This means if you you want to change an image in a article, you are unable to so for any reason and doing so will end in a ban.

HOWEVER, uploading a new image with a new purpose is perfectly fine. That has not changed and will not. However I am not stupid. I will notice if someone where to upload an entirely new picture, then use it to replace something with the excuse of "It shows something different" is not just insulting me, but also my intelligence and I will not hesitate to enforce this declaration.

This is the only warning.

What if we're replacing a manga image with an anime image?

An manga image may be replaced with an image from the anime ONCE. As soon as the image is replaced it all rules apply. That means if someone wants to change the image for whatever reason, they will not be able to do so.

How long will this be in effect?

1 month, from May 18th to June 18th.

This date is pending, and can be extended at any time. But as of now, I will not allow this to last more than a month.

Discussion

Any particular reason why? I do think it is going overboard when every other character's talk page is asking to replace an image with a new one, especially when the current one is far superior and is of great quality (i.e Kakashi's infobox image), but if there is indeed a much better image of the character that is appropriate, shouldn't it be used? Skitts (talk) 19:24, May 18, 2012 (UTC)
You can probably check the Narutopedia talk:Image policy#New policy ? page for that Skitts. I do think switching out some infobox images for example is necessary at times, and there's also the issue of people refusing to use image overwrite functions, but a months suspension won't kill us. It'll hopefully give people time to get their bearings straight and such.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 19:29, May 18, 2012 (UTC)
Wow, this is absolutely overboard. I don't edit here much and after this, I might not at all. I understand you have an "Image War" occurring here, but there are better ways to go about solving this. Divert one of your admins or promote a new one that deals with images only. They'll make sure the images are placed in the proper locations, are sourced properly, and whatnot. A complete freeze on images, save for a few instances, is a bad idea for many reasons. It prevents better images from being put in the place of ones with lower quality or not all of the right features. AND when you do lift this image ban, you're going to get a flood of new images, so much you won't be able to keep track. Because users are still going to save images and just wait for the ban to be lifted to use them. Bad move on your part. That's all I'll say about this. ~ Ten Tailed Fox Yamagakure Symbol 22:27, May 18, 2012 (UTC)
I just want to say it always so good to see you return Ten Tailed. You always seem to reappear after I make one of my more decisive moves. Regardless what's done is done. And I am prepared to meet whatever comes from my decision.--TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 22:41, May 18, 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for that ~_~ I do respect that you are willing to take whatever is coming, so I will relent with that. I will try to stay clear of the image editing side of things for a bit. I have a tenancy of accidentally misreading policies and then going and breaking them without the intention to hehehe Nevertheless, good luck in your endeavors. ~ Ten Tailed Fox Yamagakure Symbol 22:47, May 18, 2012 (UTC)

I think that while restrictive, this was necessary until the community can forge a way forward. Though I'm also worried that i'll accidentally derp. Any way, I'd also like if the manner issues that lead to this were addressed in an official manner so people can know how to proceed from here. Before I start I'd like readers to know that I'm not flaming or writing angrily, in fact, I'm quite relaxed smoking hookah in an undisclosed location in the back of my car which is probably where I got the courage from to type this. The issues I've found are:

  • Some users are under the notion that x1080 resolution images should replace every possible image even when there's no notable difference. Even though this was turned down and personally, I have no issue with people uploading x1080p resolution images on their own or over a poor quality image but the way it's being implemented now has become counter-productive and a nuisance.
  • The infobox image changes have always happened but went rampant recently with discussions turning into cage matches and at times, even when told there's no need for a change, the "attempt #" continue to go on. Granted there are a lot of times when a person's infobox image could do with some touching up because users find really good images of the person etc.
  • Thirdly, there's the uploading and switching out old images for new HD images like in Naruto Shippūden 2: Bonds for example. That's great because usually initial images come from the initial poor quality ones that are available but people have seeming forgotten the "upload a new version of this file"/image overwriting function which could save a lot of time and trouble doing that. Possibly more emphasis on this use of that function would go a long way.
  • Also, my "hogging" of uploading images as the self-proclaimed image queen chief (I always thought I was just the Herald) has been brought up as an issue. Thinking about it, this might actually be the underlying issue and though I didn't see anyone going out of their way to do this for me, nor did I complain- I paid my dues as a noob ( '-'), I'll try to curb that and give some of the younger ones more of a chance to contribute in that manner.

And that's my bit, I've typed too much (as usual) but I think if we sort through these and set some sort of guidelines, we'll be golden again.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 23:26, May 18, 2012 (UTC)

I personally think that's a great idea, at least then we're exploiting this opportunity to confront these issues rather than just temporarily ridding ourselves of them, only for them to return in a month’s time (likely with renewed fervour). A specific and well enforced Forum page set out not to debate these issues, but instead provide suggestions on how to potentially resolve them could, as Cerez365 says, make everything "golden again". However, given how these image discussions have spiralled recently, I do think an admin may likely have to commit themselves to supervising such a page to maintain order and permanently conclude a topic when a good solution has presented itself. Blackstar1 (talk) 00:08, May 19, 2012 (UTC)
So long as I don't see any of this constant image change, I'm happy with this idea. White Flash Samurai Symbol Talk 00:10, May 19, 2012 (UTC)

Just wondering Ultimate, you said you wouldn't accept the excuse of "Showing something different" what does that entail exactly? Cause if the new image does indeed show some vast variation that's relevant shouldn't it be included? Not suggesting it be used to replace existing images, but for example that Omake that showed Kakashi's face. If we ever get actual confirmation on that wouldn't an image of his face be a welcome addition to an article? I'm not much of an image editor, just trying to get an idea here. --Hawkeye2701 (talk) 00:31, May 19, 2012 (UTC)

And what about the images tagged with a poor quality tag? Can they be replaced? —¤S@lil ¤ Uchiha Symbol (T@lk) 01:02, May 19, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, how about if it's really in not-so-good quality? *(ADD)* and if I misunderstood, raws are still allowed right? —IndxcvNovelist (Talk to Me|My Wiki) 02:40, May 19, 2012 (UTC)
Poor Quality? Tough. It remains for another month.
RAWs are still allowed as they should replace all scanned images anyway. However once they replace the scanned images they will also sit unchanged for a month.--TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 11:57, May 19, 2012 (UTC)
Something like this(just an example.)? —¤S@lil ¤ Uchiha Symbol (T@lk) 12:31, May 19, 2012 (UTC)
That's exactly what he means. None of that for a month until we can straighten ourselves out.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 12:34, May 19, 2012 (UTC)
Got it. Thanx —¤S@lil ¤ Uchiha Symbol (T@lk) 12:35, May 19, 2012 (UTC)

Dropped by to leave my support. How could things get so out of hand...? Jacce | Talk | Contributions 19:09, May 20, 2012 (UTC)

When other users started this "change image" fad and would not let it come to an end. -White Flash-(Talk)- 19:24, May 20, 2012 (UTC)
I'll point out that I dropped that specific fad some time ago and that the only "fad" I've been continuing is the use of 1080p images where needed, so it wasn't all my fault that this actually occured. Some people still believe it to be my fault 100% -.-. I'm also not going to get involved here, because the end result is ... arguments. Anything I get involved in results in pointless and needless arguments that bring up stuff that is not even remotely related to the discussion at hand. This is the only message I will make in relation to this declaration and I'm not going to bother giving my opinion as to supporting it or not. --Speysider (Talk Page) 19:37, May 20, 2012 (UTC)
Trying to place the blame on things is irrelevant, I don't blame anyone as both sides feel their side is just. I don't care about that, what I care about is order. The Image War shattered that order this is a (albeit extreme) way to reestablish it. If things calm down to the point where the Declaration is no longer needed and we as a community can function normally again the Declaration can be ended.--TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 09:55, May 21, 2012 (UTC)
I am somewhat against this declaration, probably 50-50. Why don't fix it with a talk? I think this can still be fixed. :) —IndxcvNovelist (Talk to Me|My Wiki) 10:01, May 21, 2012 (UTC)
And I would love for it to be settled with a talk. That's the main reason why I didn't step in and throw my weight when the problem first started up. I figured they can be solved with discussion. Every discussion however devolved into a pissing contest that just dragged on until they spilled over into other articles...--TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 10:15, May 21, 2012 (UTC)

It was peaceful at first then Cerez365 was getting worked up (don't get angry at me dude) and Speysider would also get pissed off. I hope everything would be settled with a peaceful discussion without having a heated argument. —IndxcvNovelist (Talk to Me|My Wiki) 10:32, May 21, 2012 (UTC)

"Peaceful" because no one was doing anything about it and I'd personally had enough. Any way, I think this is something better left up to either mediation from our Admins, or like this declaration, divine judgement. I've already pointed out the issues and I'll work on my bit, that's about all I can do.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 10:36, May 21, 2012 (UTC)
I said blame does not matter. If people have a desire to be angry at someone, blame me. Let the records show that I was personally responsible for every bad thing that happened in the Image War. Is everyone now angry at me instead of each other? Awesome now lets get back to business.
This means there will be no more mud flinging at people.--TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 10:58, May 21, 2012 (UTC)
Hey, I'm not blaming anyone and I don't blame you for image war. Yep there's another discussion. Let's concentrate there. —IndxcvNovelist (Talk to Me|My Wiki) 11:03, May 21, 2012 (UTC)

I no understand why people think i'm angry all the time. I'm not angry, at anyone. At least not right now ( '-') Though I would like to see this discussion moving along soon.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 11:11, May 21, 2012 (UTC)

10 Points for showing me a gif I haven't seen in years and making me feel all old again. (I first found that gif around 2004, when I could still watch G4tv...)--TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 11:23, May 21, 2012 (UTC)
To be honest Cerez, sometimes your words seems you're angry :P but I read on your userpage, things just don't translate well on the internet. xD on the image policy talk page I have mistaken you angry. —IndxcvNovelist (Talk to Me|My Wiki) 11:34, May 21, 2012 (UTC)
I'll try to curb that and give some of the younger ones more of a chance to contribute in that manner.
The only thing is I probably don't know what images you would be looking for. If you are able to provide a list of the images that we need to find to replace the manga images on the episode's talkpage, it would help greatly :) --Speysider (Talk Page) 18:10, May 22, 2012 (UTC)
That would require me to watch the episode beforehand, something I am not able to do.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 19:29, May 22, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, well I'm sure someone will be able to provide a list of images that need changed from manga to anime when the episode is released. I assume it's because of bad internet or wherever you watch the anime that restricts you from being allowed to watch the episode twice ? --Speysider (Talk Page) 19:31, May 22, 2012 (UTC)
No, you misunderstood me. If a list like that was to be provided, then I would have to be able to watch the episode before it is released. Or maybe I was wrong in assuming the list would be desired beforehand.--Cerez365Hyūga Symbol(talk) 19:40, May 22, 2012 (UTC)
Oh lol. Both is true. If it's known what images need to be replaced as they will appear in the episode, then they can be listed almost immediately. But if there's images that are beneficial to the article that appear only in the anime, they'd need to be listed afterwards. --Speysider (Talk Page) 19:44, May 22, 2012 (UTC)
I'm assuming you will either send an email or personal message to each member about not uploading images for the month? Or at least personal message a person who does do this within the time, as a warning, before you just up and ban them. AMTNinja (talk) 23:29, May 22, 2012 (UTC)
Judging from the declaration, it would be a simple case that if you violate it then you get blocked without warning and notice. --Speysider (Talk Page) 07:32, May 23, 2012 (UTC)

This is no longer valid at this time, am I correct ? --Speysider (Talk Page) 19:05, May 28, 2012 (UTC)

For now. /evilgrin --TheUltimate3 Uzumaki Symbol (talk) 19:14, May 28, 2012 (UTC)
