Synopsis

Naruto Uzumaki is a prankster that is constantly causing trouble throughout Konohagakure. Much of the village dislikes him for it, but he enjoys the attention from when he is reprimanded, having no parents or friends.

Despite claiming to be a talented shinobi who will someday become Hokage, Naruto is incapable of performing basic techniques such as the Clone Technique. When this leaves him unable to graduate from the Ninja Academy, one of his instructors, Mizuki, tells him that if he can steal the Scroll of Seals and learn one of its secret techniques, he will be allowed to continue on to the ranks of the ninja anyway.

After successfully stealing the scroll, Naruto is caught by another instructor, Iruka Umino. Surprised that Iruka found him so quickly, Naruto worries that he will now be unable to graduate. Realizing that Naruto has been tricked, Iruka protects him from Mizuki's attack, Mizuki was planning to take the scroll for himself.

Mizuki tells Naruto that his is alone in the world because he had the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed within him on the day of his birth. He goes on to explain that the villagers hate him for the monster he contains and that Iruka, his parents having been killed by the Nine-Tails, must hate him the most. Iruka says this is not the case as he does not blame Naruto for the beast's actions, and in fact he sympathizes with Naruto, having also grown up craving attention. N aruto believes him and uses his newly mastered Multiple Shadow Clone Techniques to defeat Mizuki. Amazed by the complicated technique Naruto has learned, Iruka officially makes Naruto a ninja.

Trivia

For the Japanese DVD release of this episode, a shinobi from the opening scene was redrawn without blood on his face. This edit is present in all subsequent dubbing of the episode.
Shikamaru, Ino and Sakura are behind Naruto in the anime but, in the manga different unnamed Academy students are behind him.

The truth was Mizuki let Naruto steal the Scroll of Seals for himself. Then, Iruka finally found Naruto, unaware that ninjas were pursuing him. Naruto admitted that Mizuki was the responsible of stealing, telling Naruto to steal the scroll so he can graduate. Mizuki arrived and attacked Iruka with several [[kunai]]. Mizuki then told Naruto that he will tell the truth, with Iruka pleading not to tell the truth. Mizuki told Naruto that he was the [[Jinchūriki|container]] of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, and that's why the villagers hated him. Mizuki attacked Naruto with a large [[shuriken]], but Iruka used himself as a human shield, and told of his lonely life. After a short fight, Iruka told Mizuki that he recognises Naruto as a person, not the demon inside him. Before the large shuriken hit Iruka, Naruto saved him and used his [[Multiple Shadow Clone Technique]] to finish Mizuki. The Hokage told the ninjas that they no longer needed to worry, as the scroll was safe.
