The Curse of Hatred, is an ideal that is said to have been passed down from the Uchiha clan's forefather to his many descendants. The origins of this way of thinking can be traced back to the time of the Sage of the Six Paths, when on his deathbed the forefather of ninja chose to name his younger son his successor over his older son, despite the elder's supposed birthright. The Sage chose the child he thought most suitable to continue his legacy (the younger, who believed love necessary to achieve peace, over the elder, who sought power to bring peace). Consumed by hatred and envy after their father's death, the elder son waged war against his brother, and began a cycle of conflict that transcended time and culminated in mutual hostility between the brother's descendants, the Uchiha and the Senju.

The Curse of Hatred was first displayed by the Uchiha's ancestor, Indra Ōtsutsuki. When Indra's father, the Sage of the Six Paths, was on his deathbed, he was left to choose which of his two sons would carry on his legacy. Indra believed peace could be achieved through power, while his younger brother, Asura Ōtsutsuki, believed peace could be achieved through love. The Sage ultimately selected Asura. Indra was overwhelmed with anger and jealousy for being passed over and, once tempted by Black Zetsu, waged war against Asura to claim what he believed was his birthright. Their battle would pass through the generations, continued by their descendants: Indra's Uchiha clan and Asura's Senju clan.
As was revealed by the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, the Uchiha are a people greatly devoted to love and friendship. Ironically, this same loyalty has caused the downfall of many members of the clan throughout the ages. Because the Uchiha tend to conceal their more affectionate traits, a member's love can be transformed into hatred in the blink of an eye if they somehow lose those closest to them. The despair of the experience causes a manifestation of unique chakra within that Uchiha's brain, impacting the optic nerves and creating the Sharingan, which Tobirama literally referred to as "the eye that reflects feelings". Furthermore, the techniques known to cause more advanced development of the Sharingan require extremely painful experiences that cause the user to delve into darkness that utterly consumes them. This path that follows falling victim of the Curse of Hatred leads the victim to do anything and everything to show the Uchiha clan's superiority and power, regardless of the consequences. One such example was Fugaku Uchiha, who was so angry at the village for isolating the Uchiha clan that he was willing to go as far as plan a coup d'état to gain political power, despite the fact innocent lives would be lost, shinobi and non shinobi villagers alike. As stated by Itachi, this curse causes members of the clan to lose sight of what is important, such as the village as a whole, and focus on singular things like the clan or even simpler things like revenge.

The Uchiha's Curse of Hatred can be considered a counterpart to the Senju's Will of Fire. Whereas the Will of Fire encourages a selfless approach to life, sacrificing oneself for the betterment of the many, specifically one's village, the Curse of Hatred typically sees Uchiha displaying self-interested tendencies, sacrificing the many for the betterment of the few, specifically the clan or an Uchiha's close intimates. The events leading up to the Uchiha Clan Downfall can be considered the ultimate display of the clash between these two ideals: the Uchiha, feeling mistreated by the Senju-influenced government of Konohagakure over suspicion of Uchiha involvement in the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's Attack, which unknown to them was perpetrated by Obito Uchiha, planned to perform a coup d'etat to take control of Konoha, paying no mind to the fact that this in the short term would start another ninja world war that would result in many innocent non-shinobi deaths. Although the Third Hokage attempted to negotiate and spare the Uchiha, Danzō Shimura reasoned that peace was no longer an option and secretly arranged for the clan's massacre.
As an Uchiha delves into the darkness of the Curse of Hatred, even the slightest hint or mention of anything even remotely connected to the person whose death caused them to lose themselves will make them extremely angry and emotional, as was seen in the cases of Madara, Obito and Sasuke Uchiha. Also, after having delved, an Uchiha cannot be reasoned with by anyone except the person who originally caused them to do so. Only that person has any chance of saving the Uchiha from the curse, as was seen in the case of Sasuke Uchiha. Although they may not completely break free from the curse, they can at least regain enough loyalty to return to any previous affiliations they once had such as teammates and/or a village.

There have been cases where the Curse of Hatred can be channelled into something positive, although it may manifest in an extreme manner. Madara Uchiha for example, after founding Konoha acted what he believed benefited the village, but took a more ruthless approach in contrast to Hashirama Senju's more compassionate approach. Sasuke Uchiha, up until he found out the truth about Itachi, decided to go against everything he thought Itachi was, a ruthless killer who killed people for no reason by doing the opposite: he double-crossed Orochimaru after he outlived his usefulness, showing utter disgust on how Orochimaru toys with people's lives for selfish and personal gains and whenever possible avoids killing.
Over the years, there have been several Uchiha who managed to transcend the limitations of acting only for the sake of the clan, and instead valuing Konoha as a whole. Uchiha including Kagami — a subordinate of the Second Hokage, his son Shisui, and Shisui's best friend, Itachi, all inherited the village's will to care and care for its continued well-being.

Although many Uchiha do display the Curse of Hatred at some point in their lives, some are able to transcend their clan's usual narrow-mindedness; Kagami Uchiha, Kagami's descendant Shisui, Shisui's best friend Itachi, and Itachi's niece Sarada all live by the Will of Fire instead. Obito Uchiha initially displayed characteristics of the Will of Fire, but he was corrupted by Madara to live by the Curse of Hatred. Kakashi Hatake theorised that Obito never lost his Will of Fire despite falling to hatred, and the inner conflict between the ideals prevented Obito from fully committing to and acting on the Eye of the Moon Plan when he had the chance. In the anime, Fugaku Uchiha lived by the Will of Fire and tried everything to maintain peace in Konoha. Even when he agreed with his clan's desire for revolution, he expressed his dismay at going about it in a way that involved the bloodshed of civilians, hoping to end it quickly and with as little harm as possible. He also instructed his clansmen to leave Kakashi alone when they expressed their desire to forcefully take back his Sharingan, which Obito had left for Kakashi.
Madara Uchiha is a prime example of a strong inheritor of the Curse of Hatred. Prior to the founding of the Konoha, he waged war against the Senju and its leader Hashirama for many years. Madara refused to relinquish his hatred for the Senju after being forced to take and transplant his beloved brother's eyes in order to obtain the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Unsure how long the Uchiha's standing in the Konoha would last after the Second Hokage replaced the First, Madara sowed seeds of contempt amongst his brethren, swearing that they would surely lose their partnership with the Senju if they did not help him.

Individual Uchiha can also be released from the Curse of Hatred by those who are close to them, though this is incredibly difficult as the Uchiha becomes largely unreasonable and unflinching in their singular desire. After several years of failed negotiations, Hashirama Senju was able to draw his best friend, Madara Uchiha, away from the Curse of Hatred and channel his energies into their newly-formed Konoha. This was only a temporary success as Madara eventually returned to his former ways, but finally acknowledged that Hashirama was right before his death in the Fourth Shinobi World War. On the other hand, Kakashi Hatake was able to pull Obito Uchiha from the Curse of Hatred and convince him to oppose the Eye of the Moon Plan. Unlike Madara, Obito permanently turned his back on the Curse of Hatred, re-embraced the Will of Fire and gave his life for others and for the greater good.

Though Madara was exiled by his clan for attempting to disrupt the peace they had all worked hard to achieve with the Senju, generations later, a few members finally took heed of his warning. It was too late, however, as the Uchiha were no longer in a position of power due to the Second Hokage's attempts to thwart the Curse by designating the Uchiha to the Konoha Military Police Force in order to regulate their emotions. Despite Tobirama's efforts, the Curse was fully rekindled after all when Obito Uchiha witnessed the death of Rin Nohara. Rin's death influenced Obito to orchestrate the Nine-Tails' Attack on Konoha, which resulted in the Uchiha plotting to take over the village after being unjustly accused of setting the demon on Konoha. This led to the annihilation of the entire Uchiha clan at the hands of Itachi Uchiha, which caused Sasuke Uchiha's quest to avenge his family's death by killing Itachi years later. As noted by Obito Uchiha, Sasuke's vengeful pursuit of those even remotely responsible for his clan's demise eventually caused him to become the sole inheritor of the Uchiha clan's hatred, fated to clash against Naruto Uzumaki, the inheritor of the Senju's Will of Fire. Questioning his resolve, Sasuke later has Orochimaru reincarnate the previous Hokage, from whom he comes to learn the full nature of the Curse of Hatred. Having also learned about the origins and history of Konohagakure, Sasuke chooses to honour his brother's sacrifice and protect the village rather than destroy it.

Sasuke Uchiha, the sole survivor of the clan's downfall and Indra's latest reincarnation, initially bore the entire clan's hatred upon himself in his desire to avenge them and eventually became so submerged in its darkness that all he wanted was destruction. However, after meeting a reincarnated Itachi, Sasuke's resolve was shaken due to Itachi professing his undying love for his brother. This was enough to throw Sasuke into confusion and sought answers from the previous Hokage. As a result, Sasuke was partially brought back from the darkness after hearing Hashirama's story and Hiruzen Sarutobi's explanation of the Uchiha Clan Downfall. As a result, Sasuke's ideology become a mixture of the Curse of Hatred and the Will of Fire as he intended to execute the Five Kage in order to make the world focus its hatred on him instead of each other, thereby achieving a revolution in contrast to the pure destruction he previously craved. Despite this, Naruto Uzumaki, Asura's reincarnation, was able to redeem his best friend and purge the Curse of Hatred from him completely. As Sasuke was, at that time, the only surviving Uchiha and his daughter, Sarada, embraces the Will of Fire, the Curse of Hatred is effectively eradicated.

The Founding Uchiha

A number of Uchiha with the Sharingan, a by-product of the Curse of Hatred.

The Curse of Hatred (憎しみの呪い, Nikushimi no Noroi) was an ideal common to members of the Uchiha clan. According to Tobirama Senju, the Uchiha are people greatly devoted to love and friendship, yet they tend to conceal their more affectionate traits. When the object of their affection is lost, an Uchiha's love can instantaneously turn into hatred, leaving them more inclined to do anything and everything in their power to achieve their goals and show their own superiority, regardless of the consequences and repercussions of their actions. The despair of these experiences cause a manifestation of unique chakra within an Uchiha's brain, impacting the optic nerves and creating the Sharingan. The Sharingan's advanced form also requires extremely painful experiences, which cause the user to delve into darkness that utterly consumes them.[1]

Asura vs Indra

The beginning of the Curse of Hatred.

The Sage ultimately selected Asura.[2] Indra was overwhelmed with anger and jealousy for being passed over and, once tempted by Black Zetsu, waged war against Asura to claim what he believed was his birthright.[3] Their battle would pass through the generations, continued by their descendants: Indra's Uchiha clan and Asura's Senju clan.

The events leading up to the Uchiha Clan Downfall can be considered the ultimate display of the clash between these two ideals: the Uchiha, feeling mistreated by the Senju-influenced government of Konohagakure[4][5] over suspicion of Uchiha involvement in the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's Attack, which unknown to them was perpetrated by Obito Uchiha, planned to perform a coup d'etat to take control of Konoha, paying no mind to the fact that this in the short term would start another ninja world war that would result in many innocent non-shinobi deaths.[6] Although the Third Hokage attempted to negotiate and spare the Uchiha, Danzō Shimura reasoned that peace was no longer an option and secretly arranged for the clan's massacre.

Although many Uchiha do display the Curse of Hatred at some point in their lives, some are able to transcend their clan's usual narrow-mindedness; Kagami Uchiha, Kagami's descendant Shisui, Shisui's best friend Itachi, and Itachi's niece Sarada all live by the Will of Fire instead.[7] Obito Uchiha initially displayed characteristics of the Will of Fire, but he was corrupted by Madara to live by the Curse of Hatred. Even when he agreed with his clan's desire for revolution, he expressed his dismay at going about it in a way that involved the bloodshed of civilians, hoping to end it quickly and with as little harm as possible.[8] He also instructed his clansmen to leave Kakashi alone when they expressed their desire to forcefully take back his Sharingan, which Obito had left for Kakashi.

Despite this, Naruto Uzumaki, Asura's reincarnation, was able to redeem his best friend and purge the Curse of Hatred from him completely.[9] As Sasuke was, at that time, the only surviving Uchiha and his daughter, Sarada, embraces the Will of Fire, the Curse of Hatred is effectively eradicated.
