This technique, a trademark of the Rinnegan,[1] creates multi-purpose black rods capable of transmitting and receiving chakra.
Overview
The user can generate these receivers from their own body,[2] as well as the bodies of the Six Paths of Pain.[3] When Nagato summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, these rods extended from its midsection and pierced his back, draining his life force and allowing him to control the statue.[4][5] While connected to the Demonic Statue via Hashirama's artificial body, Madara was able to produce these rods without possessing the Rinnegan and claimed that they, like Black Zetsu, were manifestations of his will in physical form.[6] These rods also appeared from Obito's artificial right half when he first awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and Wood Release.[7] Many years later, Madara caused black rods to emerge from Obito's right half in the same manner as it was covered in a black substance, allowing Madara to control him through the use of his chakra.[8][9]
Usage
The shape and size of the created receivers can be altered to fit the situation.[10] These rods act as chakra receivers, to which the user can transmit their chakra across vast distances. According to Shizune, they act as high-frequency chakra demodulators, which become appreciably warm to the touch while receiving chakra.[11] To make best use of the receivers, the user must transmit their chakra from the closest and highest point possible.[12] The user can continuously change the frequency of the transmitted chakra signals to prevent being detected.[13] The rods are highly durabile, damaging every scalpel Shizune used to extract just a small sample of them during her autopsy of the first Animal Path,[14] and even displaying some resistance when struck by Naruto Uzumaki's Rasengan.[15] When employed offensively, they have shown to be capable of piercing through Sage Mode users and tailed beasts.[10][16]
The receivers are able to disrupt the chakra pathway system of anyone who touches them by injecting them with the user's chakra, potentially restricting their movement and preventing them from using techniques.[17] Through this means, Nagato claimed he could easily take control of a living person while within a certain range of them.[18] However, if someone gains the power of the Six Paths, they can gain immunity to these rods.[19] Aside from receiving chakra, the rods can also be used to manifest the Demonic Statue's cursed seal chains, which have a far stronger binding power than that of Nagato's Outer Path.[20] As they are connected to their creator's chakra, the rods will disintegrate in the same manner as the Truth-Seeking Balls if their creator's chakra wanes.[21]

After the Demonic Statue pierced him with black rods, Nagato later incorporated the receivers into his Six Paths of Pain technique by implanting them into a number of corpses at various points along their body as piercings. Doing so allowed him to transmit his chakra to the bodies and control them remotely as if they were his own, while bestowing each with certain powers of the Rinnegan. The many animals Nagato summoned through the Animal Path also had a number of these body piercings, suggesting that he may have controlled them in a similar manner.[22]
During the course of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Obito utilised these receivers to control his own Six Paths of Pain, comprised entirely of reincarnated jinchūriki, using only one receiver per body.[23] The rods also served to temporarily bind the tailed beasts to their former jinchūriki, while allowing him to control the beasts themselves as well as quickly reseal them within the Demonic Statue through the use of its chakra chains.[24]

The receivers can be produced with a bladed tip as well as detached if the use of several is required,[25] or to be thrown as projectiles.[26][27] These bladed receivers disrupt the chakra of anyone they pierce, disorienting them and causing a vision of the Rinnegan to appear in their mind.[17][28]

Though the rods are made from durable material, they can be broken with enough force.[29] When launched from Obito's body by Madara, the receivers were strong enough to deflect arrows made up of black flames launched by Sasuke Uchiha's Susanoo.[30] When the rods are embedded in a reincarnated person, said individual is seemingly unable to regenerate until they are removed.
Nagato, due to being immobile, fired bladed receivers from his mechanical walker, which then allowed him to control the victim like one of the Six Paths of Pain due to the close proximity between them. Naruto was able to resist Nagato's influence through a combination of Sage Mode and Kurama's chakra.[18]
Chakra Receiver Stakes

Obito demonstrated a unique variation of these chakra receivers in the form of giant stakes, which he launched by forcefully ejecting them from another dimension. When applied with enough force, they can pierce the flesh of tailed beasts and, like the simpler chakra receiver, allow the user to manifest chakra chains.[16]

In Naruto Shippūden: Shinobi Rumble, Pain has a technique called "Black Needle Stab" (黒針突, Kokushintō), in which he simply dashes at the opponent and stabs them with the blade variant, causing their controls to become temporarily reversed; an enhanced "Full Throttle" version is also available, called "Black Needle Stab: Destructive Flash" (黒針突・滅閃, Kokushintō: Metsusen). As no specific name was given for these weapons in the manga, this may imply that they are officially known as "Black Needles" (黒針, Kokushin).
Trivia
- It was shown that the receivers inserted in the reincarnated jinchūriki moved in position when they entered Tailed Beast Mode. As seen with Rōshi, when he transformed into Son Gokū, the receiver moved from his chest up to the tailed beast's neck.[31]
