Should those be here?
I noticed that there are some pages in this category that might not truly be considered ranks. For example, as it is now, we consider as ranks: sage, missing-nin, medical-nin and hunter-nin. I'm only using canon examples, but this extends to the anime cooking and courier as well. Those aren't truly ranks. I think we should consider those as classifications, much like we do with jinchūriki, sannin, sensor, samurai, daimyō, ninja monk, etc. I don't think Jōnin Commander should be listed as a rank as well, in the article itself, we point out that this isn't a separate tank. On village heads, I understand listing Kage as the general rank and the country variants, even though we don't put "rank=Raikage" in infoboxes, but I don't think we should consider village heads in general as a rank. I won't talk about the letter ranks, because only one of them is relevant to the person level rank. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 19:25, January 16, 2011 (UTC)
- Like Category:Teams, some things are put into this category for convenience, not because they fit the definition without fail. ~SnapperTo 20:24, January 16, 2011 (UTC)
I would consider village heads a rank- they exist as a distinct place in the chain of command of a village's military. Jonin Commander, is a variant of a rank and thus probably fits here more-so than elsewhere. So I say definitely keep those. Some of the others do also represent someone's job in the rank structure, like medic and hunter, in the same way ANBU does, so I'd be hesitant to remove those. Missing-nin definitely strikes me as a 'put here for convenience' things like Snapper2 mention, it fits here better than elsewhere as it defines someone's place in regard to rank even if it is not one itself. Sage, is not a rank and definitely shouldn't be here, it is the possession of a particular set of abilities that people at different rank can do. ZeroSD (talk) 04:03, January 21, 2011 (UTC)
I wouldn't keep Jōnin Commander here on the basis that it is not essentially a separate rank, unlike the similar Kumogakure one. I think medic and hunter can be taken to the other category on the same argument you used for sages. Case in point, Sakura and Shizune. Both are medic-nin, but one is a chūnin and the other is a jōnin, and there are chūnin and jōnin who aren't medic-nin. On the hunder-nin, while they only exist Kirigakure, they're still ANBU, hunting others is just their function inside the ANBU. Missing-nin isn't truly a rank, as we've ANBU missing-nin, chūnin missing-nin and genin missing-nin. My point is that as far as people ranks are concerned, I think we should only keep the strictly military ones. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 04:15, January 21, 2011 (UTC)
Point on the medics. Hunter-nin is a specific organization within the rank structure though that replaces other rank. Missing-nin effectively discard any prior rank when they become so. I'd ditch some, but some of these are either ranks or rank-related. A Jonin Commander is a rank variant, which is still a rank. A ninja village head is a military rank/position. They fit here better than 'categories'.ZeroSD (talk) 19:52, January 21, 2011 (UTC)
Just because one is a hunter-nin, it doesn't really place their ANBU rank, it's like a job, much like Ibiki being responsible for interrogating people, that's not a rank. I wouldn't say missing-nin discard their ranks. When Naruto learns everyone in his generation was promoted, Sasuke is mentioned as still being a genin, despite being a missing-nin. Jōnin Commander is still not a separate rank, it's as much of a rank as is the councilor position Koharu and Homura hold. The place I want to move them isn't just some category, it's the same one other similar positions are already. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 20:21, January 21, 2011 (UTC)
