There's a rumor spread by some Twitter/X accounts that Studio Pierrot that has animated most of the Naruto franchise's stories is considering making the Boruto anime seasonal, and also to release it in 2027 at the soonest.
I hope they decide not to do either because the Boruto anime is a good show, especially for the franchise's target audience: adolescents & teens.
The Boruto anime, if it becomes a seasonal series, would be 12-episode or 24-episode series released weekly which would mean filler episodes will be scrapped. While that may sound like a good idea, filler episodes are original stories that deliver the humor and minor characters' screentime the main story can't deliver. Humor is a great universally sought quality of a good anime and it would definitely keep the teens glued to the franchise. besides, extra screentime for some of the beloved minor characters like Denki or Metal is appreciated.
While the seasonal option allows Studio Pierrot to create OVAs dedicated to a few filler episodes, the decrease in the ovas' quality will result in low viewership, hence a smaller budget for the next round of OVAs and then the Boruto series getting a new reputation for tanking their OVAs' potential for popularity. Filler episodes within the main story ensure animation quality and other factors stay consistent and the budget dedicated the required resources for a great show.
Sure, filler is dull for any anime, but that's for anime that willbe released weekly. however, when binge-watched, filler is surprisingly satisfying.
Finally, if Borto is going to wait for 3 years at least before returning to teens screens, it might get less viewership because the negative influence of bad word-of-mouth on social media will drive teens away from watching sequels to the Bourto NNG anime.
Besides, Studio Pierrot shouldn't be trying to assuage the bad reception of Boruto anime by convention-attending adults who post dissatisfactory reviews online just because those are the loudest complaints. Instead, Studio Pierrot must be paying attention to their target audience for Boruto: the teens and adolescents who enjoy watching anime during their leisure time because their parents actually pay for the streaming and subscription!
Boruto's anime should be a good time for the target audience and not a solution to keeping 'anime fans' satisfied.
I hope Studio Pierrot will make an excellent decision.
