Use of this technique puts a great deal of strain on the user, usually causing their eyes to bleed. The black flames of Amaterasu are stated to burn through mostly anything in their path, even smothering regular fire techniques with ease. Amaterasu is said to never stop burning; even when whatever is caught by Amaterasu is completely reduced to ash or destroyed, it can still continue burning for seven days and seven nights. It cannot be extinguished with water or any other normal methods. The only thing that the flames have failed to burn into or through is Gaara's chakra-infused sand. However, the flames burn fairly slowly compared to ordinary flames. This allows anyone struck by Amaterasu an opportunity to remove whatever clothing or body parts have been caught ablaze before the flames spread further. Nagato was able to deflect the flames from his body using Shinra Tensei. Jiraiya was also able to seal the flames with the Fire Sealing Method. Also, the Ten-Tails was able to remove the body parts from its body which set ablaze by Sasuke Uchiha. The flames can also be extinguished by the user that summoned them, albeit it puts great strain on their eyes.

Manipulation
Users of this technique have shown the ability to manipulate these flames to some extent. Itachi was able to quell the flames during his battle with Sasuke, something as Zetsu noted was done to protect Sasuke's eyes. Sasuke himself would later quell the flames during his battle with Killer B, after Karin had accidentally been caught in the flames. Furthermore, the Uchiha derived an ability known as Blaze Release: Kagutsuchi through which they could manipulate the flames to serve as not only an offensive ability but a defensive one as well.

This article is about the ninjutsu Amaterasu. For the Naruto: Shippūden episode, see Amaterasu!.

Amaterasu is a Mangekyō Sharingan dōjutsu, the highest level of Fire Release.[2] Said to represent the "Material World and Light" (物質界と光, Busshitsukai to Hikari), Amaterasu is the antipode to Tsukuyomi.[1]

Overview

Amaterasu produces black flames at the focal point of the user's vision.[3] In most situations, this makes Amaterasu impossible to avoid. However, if the target can move fast enough to prevent being focused on, Amaterasu will miss them when it's cast.[4] Once created, it can continue burning for seven days and seven nights. The flames cannot be extinguished with water or any other normal methods;[5] only the user can put the flames out.[6] Said to be "the fires from hell" and to burn as hot as the sun itself,[1] Amaterasu burns basically any material — other flames included — until nothing but ash remains.[7] However, the flames cannot burn through chakra or materials infused with chakra, as they failed to burn into Naruto's Version 1 chakra cloak,[8] or through Gaara's chakra-infused sand.[9]

Amaterasu does not ordinarily require hand seals to be performed, though Sasuke Uchiha once used the Tiger hand seal, which is common for fire techniques.[10] This technique can also be sealed within the Sharingan of another person.[11] Beyond mere offence, Amaterasu's flames can be used as a deterrent, with users surrounding themselves in its flames to discourage physical attacks.[12] For more practiced users, they can shape Amaterasu into more specialized configurations.

Use of this technique puts a great deal of strain on the user, usually causing their eyes to bleed. For all its lethal potential, Amaterasu burns fairly slowly, allowing targets to remove burning clothes before their body is caught ablaze or, if it's too late for that, remove the burning body part(s) before it spreads.[13] Other defensive options are pushing the flames away,[14] absorbing them,[15] certain space–time ninjutsu,[16] or being the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails.[17] While impractical as a defence, Amaterasu can also be sealed.

Influence

Amaterasu, like Tsukuyomi and Susanoo, is a god in ancient Japanese myth and the Shintō religion. Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, was born from the left eye of Izanagi when he washed his face after escaping the underworld.
