Sasuke manipulates the flames of Amaterasu to cover the ribs of Susanoo with the flames, surrounding himself with a shield of black fire. In addition to the damage it can inflict, this has the psychological effect of causing melee enemies to hesitate to attack him.

- While in the manga this technique is only described as Shield of Black Flames (黒炎の盾, Kokuen no Tate), it is explicitly named in Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3.
